“I Thought It Was One Of The Great Plays I’ve Ever Seen”
October 11th, 2025
Another Hall of Famer weighs in.
Baker Mayfield has hit superstar status.
It could be fleeting. Joe can evision NFL analysts and ex-players turning on Mayfield quickly, but right now he’s the golden boy.
The best part is that Mayfield deserves it. He is back to rolling defenses, and this year he’s not throwing interceptions after leading the league in picks last year.
Hall of Fame safety John Lynch, the legendary Buccaneer in his ninth year as 49ers general manager, weighed in on Mayfield this week on The Rondé Barber Show.
Like fellow Hall of Famer Kurt Warner, Lynch is very impressed and explained that the people in his circle are, too.
“You know, the guy we played against when he was with Cleveland wasn’t that guy,” Lynch said of Mayfield.
“When football people start saying, ‘This guy’s out of his mind,’ when people start talking in that language, that’s the way the guy’s playing. He’s in that zone. You can tell the game’s moving very slow. His eyes are up at all times. He doesn’t feel like anybody around him can get him down.”
An iconic tough guy on the field, Lynch brought up Mayfield physically holding off 49ers edge rusher Joey Bosa on fourth down last year to throw a drive-extending completion.
“I thought it was one of the great plays I’ve ever seen,” Lynch said.
“You know, aside from that, the way he’s playing, Baker just kind of has this juice. You can see it from afar. His teammates love, the fans must love — he’s got something special about him.”
Great stuff from Lynch, who is a not a guy to gas up players. The Mayfield-Bosa video is below. Mayfield sure was diabolical.
Baker Mayfield casually holding off Nick Bosa while dropping a dime is so tough

So that dime was for Sterling Sheppard. Great play by White though. Baker is a beast!

I like 4th and 10 vs Texans better

… and a couple of those TD passes to EE are just perfect.
And we can’t forget 63 yards in the air at the goal line … no running throw necessary.

If some or most NFL analysts and former players who once were convinced Baker was a bust and now think he is him were to turn on him if things eventually were to go south would only confirm what we already know which is that they haven’t got a clue.

The guy we played against when he was with Cleveland wasn’t that guy. Really? NFL rookie records and playoff win by the third year. When is Lynch talking about- Baker’s injury year? I don’t buy it- look at his stats for first seven years. Up there with the greats. He’s always been good and yes he’s getting better. I’ve NEVER seen a QB with 7 year statistics like his lose it. Just the opposite. People looking for a regression don’t understand the game. Besides injuries there isn’t much gonna derail Mayfield. He’s leading a good, exciting team of players with no divas-credit GM and head coach. Credit them for bringing attention to their city and giving Mayfield the chance to show what good QB play is. We’re a good football team. We’ll lose a few. But not many.

Baker was great for the Browns except 2021 when he played with a serious injury the entire season. Lynch and others who say otherwise don’t know what they are talking about. Mayfield didn’t suddenly get good. The winning TD drive and long game winning TD pass after 36 hours on the Rams in 2022 is no different than what he is doing now.

Kenton,
Perfect and true. Thanks.

We know.

O smile everytime I watch that clip and I’ve watched it a lot.

Lynch is my all time favorite player. I agree that is deff one of the greatest plays I’ve ever seen. BM is a dawg. I said last year if he could limit the ints we could could win a lot more games. Our defense just isn’t consistently good enough to handle his ints.

Baker has done more for this team than Tom Brady did.

The slobber knockers continue. Really Cybersecurity???? Please stop your foolishness! It is because of Brady Baker is able to do the things he does for the team right now. Jaymiss the ATM extraordinaire really cost this team it’s manhood. Brady came in and taught them how to be professional, accountable and world champions in just one season and won us a Championship. What was Baker doing at that time? If Baker had came in right after ATM he’d fell apart soon with this team because of where his head was at the time. After Brady Baker was the perfect match for us because he made football fun again for the players. He doesn’t have a dog house he puts players in, he has a Dawg house where all his teammates live.
You Baker fans really need to stop force feeding this false narrative that he is a coach/team maker because it wasn’t until coach Bowles showed he wanted him did his career turn around. As good as Baker is now he needs a good coaching staff around him. He has that but he also needs this defense to be at least decent to go deeper in the playoffs. Last year he deserved MVP more than Josh Allen and almost as much as Lamar Jackson but our defense cut his best season ever out from under his feet. He is playing lights out now and deserves the praise he gets but you guys come on with your side show

Cybdersecurity when/If Baker helps us win a Super Bowl then yes he has done as MUCH as Brady had but not more. Until then please stop your madness, it’s a bad look

Hate that John Lynch was released from the Bucs in 04.

Really what i see every week is a defensive coach that had years to fix this defense and we still see the same issues over and over and over again. Lets compare Brady and Baker with the same head coach why dont we? Or we might come to the conclusion that maybe maybe it was BA and all of those other players including Brady that came in together and won the superbowl. Brady himself ne er played as good as Baker is playing now for us. I am not talking the team, i am not talking the coach i am talking individual play. If it wasnt for Baker we would be 0-5 or 1-4 at best.

DBBF99; In 2020 Baker was heading into his first year with Stefanski in Cleveland which turned out to be his best year in Cleveland when they beat the Steelers in the playoffs that year. So his head was not in a bad place. BTW Bruce Arians wanted the Browns job in 2019 because he wanted to coach Baker. So if Brady had gone somewhere else in 2020 and Baker was available, Arians would have loved to have him and Bakers success may have come much sooner in his career instead of having to go through the misery in 2021 and 2022.

My last post was not in any way intended to diminish what Brady did in Tampa. Only pointing out that there was a good possibility that Baker would have had success as well at that time especially with Arians as coach. Baker would have thrived ultimately with Arians imo.

DavidBigBucsFan99 .
You really took the time to write all that rubbish just to let everyone know you dont have any clue what you are talking about. When a simple. I dont know anything would of been just fine.
