Exploding Baker Mayfield, Emeka Egbuka Hype

October 6th, 2025

Joe realizes most fans are employed or engaged in worthy life endeavors and can’t spend all day soaking in all things Bucs like Joe does.

And what a 19 hours it has been.

The hype is everywhere and it’s largely centered on the franchise quarterback and his record-breaking rookie receiver.

Rex Ryan was on ESPN’s Stay in Bed Get Up show this morning saying Mayfield reminds him of Brett Favre. Last night, BSPN had ex-Jets and Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards breaking down Sunday’s games. He passionately explained fourth-quarter moments are never too big for Mayfield and he plays “off schedule” as well as any quarterback in the game.

“And the great thing about it,” Edwards said, “his team believes when he has the ball in the later stage of the football game, they’re going to win. That’s a belief.”

Former NFL running back Damien Harris of CBS says Emeka Egbuka is an obvious instant “superstar.” Harris is in a state of admiration and disbelief.

“You got a guy that’s a rookie that in Week 5 is one of the best receivers in the National Football League and is putting the entire league on notice?” Harris told his CBS audience. “Watching him play, I forgot he was a rookie because the fundamentals that he plays with, the savvy, the strong hands, and just the downright competitor, he is the perfect match for Baker Mayfield.”

Former Titans GM Ran Carthon was all-in, as well.

“Dare I say, the Bucs won’t miss Mike Evans when he’s gone,” Carthon said. (Take it easy, dude!)

Former Bucs QB Chris Simms was on PFT Live this morning gushing about the Bucs offense, noting Mayfield wasn’t dinking and dunking his way to nearly 400 yards passing against Seattle yesterday. Simms said the Bucs’ checkdowns were more like 12-yard passes versus safe stuff to running backs.

“Incredible” is how host Mike Florio described Egbuka.

Joe’s even seen all the networks crafting various Bucs-related graphics. What a day to be a Bucs fan!

    Baker Mayfield is my Quartetback.

  2. Scott Says:

    Baker Mayfield is America’s Quarterback

  3. AMI_Chris Says:

It’s a great day to be a Bucs fan — TODAY. The actual game nearly caused me to have a blood pressure episode.

  4. PSL Bob Says:

It was a thing of beauty! Although Egbuka got most of the attention, Baker didn’t ignore others. I loved that he got both Tez and Otton involved, and he never leaves out Shepard in clutch time.

  5. Citrus County Says:

Pardon me for being ungentlemanly but…I TOLD YOU SO !!!
    Kyle who ?

  6. jimmy Says:

they both better just sign team friendly deals and shut up.

  7. Watch Daddy Sling It Says:

And props to Heck and Haggard (and the whole OL). That was a very stout 4-man rush DL. Baker’s white uni was pretty near pristine.

  8. Beeej Says:

Baker is like a short, prime Tom Brady who can run

  9. BucsFan4Life Says:

God it feels weird getting this much hype not only from the fans lol

  10. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

Baker is like a combination of Favre, Brees, & Brady.

  11. orlbucfan Says:

Hey there, Citrus County. You are right!

  12. BakerFan Says:

Just remember a few of us are the original Baker Fans….. Gipper, Todd, KentonSmith(I believe) and a few others including myself which I put it in my blog name, not ashamed of one bit because I seen what he could do dating back to his OU days. Had several back and fourths with many taking cheap shots at Mayfield and myself, didn’t matter because I knew who he is, how his teammates right down admire the leader he is.

Now there are a many like Munch, oneilbuc to name just a couple that are pure haters but even they can not denigrate what is happening this year. Until he throws his next interception and he becomes a loser in there eyes again.

  13. KABucs Says:

… and you guys remember that Jets game?

This game seemed like they were almost no penalties in comparison. Much more entertaining.
I don’t think the offensive line had a single penalty, correct me if I’m wrong. That’s astounding given the noise on the road, 12th man my arse!
    Game ball O-line & Carberry.

  14. KABucs Says:

… Oh … and always been a Baker fan, well, at least since he signed with Tampa Bay. Always been in his corner and I’ve been happy to have him because I remember all the quarterbacks that preceded TB12. Some people are never happy.

  15. Smarter than Joe Says:

Baker is what Joe thought Jameis would be

    Thanks

Just when I thought I was out they pull me back in !

I still don’t like the gambling promotions or fantasy football.
I still abhor the seemingly incompetent “fixed” nature of the referees.
I’m still disgusted by the NFL and its sickening leadership.
I still refuse to watch sickening television broadcasts.

But I still LOVE the Bucs and have for 50 years.

Deep down inside my gut feeling told me, when Baker was signed, that we had found our “version” of Drew Brees.

    Does anyone disagree ?

I thought that if Baker could be teamed up with his “version” of Sean Payton he would soar.

Baker “don’t need no Sean Payton” !

    Tom who ?

  17. Fred McNeil Says:

We seem to have several good years ahead of us. On offense anyway. The defense??? I dunno.

  18. Arn Platz Says:

I’m seeing a spike in social media posts for Baker and the boys and I am loving every minute of it. We have a great team and they are the most entertaining team to watch every Sunday. Always a nail biter. Reminds me of the 1980’s Cleveland Browns “Cardiac kids”. Go Bucs!!!

  19. GoneGator Says:

Hoping the Todd suks crowds favorite coach gets his butt beat tonight against KC.
Would be the cherry on top of this football weekend 😎

  20. Davyboy Says:

It’s amazing what a good quarterback can do when he is in the same system for 2 years. The question is, if Grizzard stays for 4 or 5 years, how good will Baker be? And where is Munch in all this fun?

  21. Aqualung Says:

Great to see the offense step up. That’s the minimum point total necessary to win with this defenseless uncoordinator.

  22. Citrus County Says:

Say what you will about Canales,Coen or Grizz. Baker is making head coaches of them. Baker is NFL MVP in my opinion.
The old saying that the QB is a coach killer may be so but Baker has given a heart transplant to Todd Bowles.

  23. dls5492 Says:

I remember the when Bucs’ quarterbacks would leave here (Williams, Young) and succeed with other teams. Now the opposite is happening. Hallelujah!

  24. heyjude Says:

    Loving it!

Scott – Yes, Baker is America’s QB! PSL Bob – Yes, Baker shares!

Feeling as though the Bucs are America’s team too! Take that Jerry Jones, lol!

It’s time for some more Baker commercials. How about some at Raymond James with the guys.

Titans GM Ran Carthon comment about Mike. Hold on! Oh, we will definitely still miss Mike when he decides to retire. He is still one of the best.

  25. Beeej Says:

    PFF has Baker as QB-12?

  26. Buddha Says:

And yet I saw one commentator who said that Dak Prescott was odds on favorite now to win the MVP. Based on what?

  27. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Next time you interview Baker, please ask him which color jersey he wants us all to wear? Red, white, creamsicle, or 1976 white?

  28. capnhowdy Says:

Rex Ryan “praising” Bake is laughable considering he did everything he could in previous interviews to dog him and say the exact opposite. Hey Rexy, your old QB grew some tequila filled brass balls and almost got himself killed the other night. He’s sitting handcuffed to a hospital bed right now waiting to be arrested once he’s discharged, but you know QB’s right Rexy??

  29. Saskbucs Says:

    It’s beautiful.

We know what this team is or can be and I want everyone else to know it.

Winning games like yesterday continues the path of this team as one of the best in the league. I want respect put on the Bucs name and that’s what is happening today!

A long season left ahead and it could still go off the rails but this is a special group. Need to win 2 of next 3 (49ers, Lions, Saints) preferably 49ers and Saints as SF has a cupcake schedule.

  30. Sooner4Bucs Says:

Baker Mayfield lives up to his potential like few ever have.. Head strong, confident, very well prepared .. his skill set is still underrated in my opinion but who can deny the fire he plays with week in and week out? No other quarterback in my lifetime has been as all-around entertaining to watch as Baker. Go Bucs!!

  31. Saskbucs Says:

One thing that irks me about the talking heads… yeah Evans and Bucky out isn’t great and makes Bakers play that much more impressive but they aren’t even the important piece outta the equation.

We get Goedeke back and Heck outta the lineup… there’s your real missing piece that makes the offense hum. No disrespect to Mike!

  32. SlyPirate Says:

    Did you know?
Randy Moss owns the rookie record for TD receptions. 17. Through 5 games, EE has 5. It’s early but he’s on pace.

  33. Citrus County Says:

Hopefully Grizz will see the wisdom in hitching his wagon to Baker for the LONG TERM. Three years of seasoning as OC will do him well. Hopefully the Glazers are doing serious due diligence on defensive coaches and DC prospects. Hang in there Bucs fans there is now a solid foundation to be built upon. With players and coaches youth is where it’s at. Please, no more serpents.

  34. Kenton Smith Says:

GoneGator, that’s mean as it can be. And I couldn’t agree with you more. Perfect end to a great weekend! Oh yeah, our weak division was undefeated this weekend also. Go Chiefs!!

Nice left uppercut to Rexxie’s chin resulting in a 10 count.

  36. Dew Says:

    Tez is coming too.
    .

  37. Citrus County Says:

For the younger guys; Popeye used the uppercut on Bluto after he ate his spinach.

  38. MelvinJunior Says:

Should’ve heard Cowherd today, on his show! He said it was THE BEST, most well-played, exciting Game that he had EVER SEEN BEFORE.

  39. Bucfan1988 Says:

The only reason people comparing zmayfield to Brees is his shorter stature…

    I peacefully disagree….

Mayfield is now the 2025 version of Brett Favre but without the pics of his “unit” being texted around 🙂

Mayfield has a gunslinger’s mentality and his uncanny mobility and command of the offense really reminds me of Favre. He goes off script because he trusts his arm strength…..

He throws incredibly well on the run and has insane accuracy…

    Defensive coordinators HATE that.

  40. MelvinJunior Says:

The ONLY Game in the HISTORY of THE NFL, where BOTH ‘Quarterbacks’ threw for at least 325-Yards, AND an 80% Completion %. And, the Bucs became the first team EVER (I think) during the Super Bowl Era, to WIN 4 of their first 5-Games on a ‘game winning’ score (or first since 1970, or something like that… I was still half-asleep this morning, when I saw/heard this LoL).

  41. GoneGator Says:

    @Kenton 👍🏼

    Bakers playing lights out.
    Ebuka dominating.

    And how about Tez?

Grizz finally got the offense humming and it looked like what I hoped it would ! Great job!

  42. Buckit Says:

Interesting graphic they showed on the broadcast yesterday. It was a list of all the fine receivers that have come out of Ohio State. They must have some great receiver coaches in that program that are molding that talent.

  43. Rjscheapseats Says:

SlyPirate: Anyone remember the ’98 Bucs/Vikings game? Randy Moss was a rookie, and the Vikings only regular season loss was to to the Bucs.

I had never heard of Randy Moss – but he ran a go route before the half and just outran everyone for a TD.

Moss was the best receiver I have ever seen. Egbuka isn’t THAT good.
But he is prety damn good.

  44. Hopalong Bucco Says:

Buckit–they have one receiver coaches and he is the BEST in football—Brian Hartline.

  45. Hopalong Bucco Says:

Great to win and witness MVP Baker and ROY Emeka put on spectacular performances. The OL kept Baker clean BUT will Licht get off his ass and hire a Special Teams coach and some headhunters to lead the charge??? They damn near cost us a win—-the last 5 weeks!!

  46. Bakenyourface Says:

You could just tell when he was here at Oklahoma he was this guy. Couldn’t be happier for true Bucs fandom.. Enjoy!

  47. Citrus County Says:

Peering into the future, I’m curious as to what the Glazers and Jason might be thinking. We don’t know how they really felt about the future prospects of Canales and Coen or for that matter the early promise of Grizz. It seems to me they were playing it safe (and loyal) by keeping Bowles and not promoting Coen. The timing was not right and Canales slipped away. Grizz looks good so far. We know how much home grown talent means to them in terms of contracts, salaries, continuity, and team cohesiveness. Bowles on a 3 year contract and given his age (among other factors) seems to be the perfect setup for this team and organization to take the next step. A deep playoff run and perhaps a SB would be icing on the cake and a perfect segue.

  48. Gipper Says:

Munch, Munch, Munch?…………. Everyone wants your apology for endless trashing of Mayfield………….You are getting your comeuppance…………OK, forget the apology just stay away forever.

  49. JohnQCitizen Says:

    Pay the man.

  50. Buc in VA Says:

Baker is the most exciting QB in Bucs history. Didn’t say most talented or most successful. But exciting? I think he’s the top.

  51. ModHairKen Says:

“Dare I say, the Bucs won’t miss Mike Evans when he’s gone,” Carthon said. (Take it easy, dude!)”

No, dude. The Bucs WILL miss Mike Evans when he retires as a Buccaneer.

This fan base loves the players on the Bucs. Especially the ones who are good
Men and leave it all on the field.

I get that Carthon was trying to be cute, but, brother, Mike Evans is and has been a complete joy to cheer for since the moment he was drafted.

  52. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

If we had another Egbuka then we wouldn’t miss Evans so much but we still are. With that many yards Baker should’ve had 4 tds at least. If Evans had been out there he would’ve. No one can say Baker is the check down king anymore, he always looks to throw deeper. It was great watching him play. 85% with 379 yards??? Stupendous!!! Wish our defense knew how to tackle around the goal line maybe Darnold doesn’t end up with 4 tds

  53. Marky mark Says:

Rex ryan can go stuff his fat face with hot dogs. He has been dissing Baker as long as munch has.

  54. lambchop Says:

Rex Ryan, the same foot-lovin’, Big Mac stuffin loser who said Baker was overrated.
