Dean Blandino: Officials Shouldn’t Have Overturned Cade Otton Catch
October 23rd, 2025So what the hell happened when Baker Mayfield threw a short ball to Cade Otton at midfield late in the second quarter on Monday night?
Otton made a sweet one-hand grab of the off-target throw and it was ruled a catch as Lions cornerback Arthur Maulet swooped in and got two hands on the ball as he and Otton fell to the turf controlling the ball.
Then the play was overturned and ruled an interception.
Former NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino, the Fox Sports rules analyst, said officials incorrectly overturned the call.
Speaking on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Blandino said if he had to judge the play with no on the field, he would give the catch to Maulet. But as for having enough evidence to overturn the Otton catch ruling on the field, Blandino said it simply was wasn’t there.
“If they ruled interception on the field, it’d be an easy stance,” Blandino said. “You know, that’s kind of the standard; it’s gotta be clear to change it. Since they ruled it a catch, you have not only is it simultaneous going to the receiver. But was it clear that the defensive player had the ball, controlled it, got it before Otton got it? There was too many question marks for me to say that was clear and obvious to overturn. I thought that because they ruled it one way on the field, then it should have stood.
“Either way they ruled it, you couldn’t change it with the video that was available.”
This call really sickened the Joe. If you watch Maulet’s left hand through the “catch,” it’s pulling Otton’s arm as the Bucs tight end is squeezing the football.
It’s easy to say this play didn’t matter, but momentum changes games, especially before halftime.
A tie goes to the offense
The call on the field was a catch
How does this get overturned?!?!
Sincerely,
A Cade Otton Over 3.5 Receptions bettor

And this is charged as an interception against Mayfield…..an absolute crime.
It was clear that Otton had his arm around the ball the entire time.
I would say this is a “home town” ruling however we never get those at home.

SEA had 17 points off suspect second chance penatlies and reversed play calls.
TB’s defense held them to 7 points not offered by officials. Much close game than anyone is realizing, even with the offensive struggles. Even the Gibbs explosive had two clear holds on the replay that broke the run open.
Conversely, TB lost an unknown amount of points to timely drive killing penalties, reversals of INT and spot placement/review.
Not to mention the no called DPI to Mike Evans and calling that a non-catch.
The officials are responsibile for double-digit swing in this game and I’ve watched more film of all these plays to feel comfortable that this game was fully decided by officiating. It should have been a 3 point score by either team to decide it, based on how well both team’s defenses played except for a few series.
October 23rd, 2025 at 10:58 am
As bad as the WNBA officiating. Just awful and zero accountability for these terrible calls. I hate to be one of those guys but sure hard to convince me that the league is controlling who wins.
October 23rd, 2025 at 11:01 am
Same with overturning Otton’s first down catch. It wasn’t clear he didn’t have the line to gain, or was short. The call on the field should’ve stood.
October 23rd, 2025 at 11:05 am
Someone in the Bucs organization has been sleeping with multiple NFL ref’s wives. There’s no other explanation for this BS.
October 23rd, 2025 at 11:09 am
Worst officiated game I have seen in quite awhile and that is saying something.
Maulet didnt even leave the scrum with the ball! Thats no overturn right there on its own in my mind. You picked it you better keep it pal and put it on display like every other CB does.
It’s crazy the NFL doesn’t have this tightened up. I am not a “rigged” guy but I am not naive either. There is way too much money at stake for the NFL not to keep a finger on the scale.
When the narrative before the game is … “Lions got robbed in KC last week so look for calls to go back their way” we aren’t watching a football game anymore, it’s a tv show with bad twists for half the audience.
Hopefully the Bucs submitted a video package of the bull they encountered Monday and told the league to be embarrassed.
October 23rd, 2025 at 11:12 am
It will be fine as long as we put them down during the playoffs
October 23rd, 2025 at 11:16 am
Hodad
Agreed. The Lions got a BOGO on a review. They already ruled a first down and Campbell’s challenge was about making the catch. One has nothing to do with the other.
The NFL really is scripted like the WWE.

The picture Joe posted of ME giving a piggyback ride while the ball is in the air, should be mailed to Goodell’s office in bulk.
October 23rd, 2025 at 11:27 am
That wasn’t officiating we witnessed Monday night, it was NFL headquarters betting lines coming to fruition.
October 23rd, 2025 at 11:29 am
As one of the old guard Buc fans on here, I’ve grown used to the cheating, bought off refs. It’s a lot cheaper to buy a ref than a coach or player. That’s why I always write: Go Bucs!! Beat the other team and the refs. What really gets me is when players deliberately injure other players, and in a lot of cases, end careers. Sure American football is rough, but there is a difference between skilled play and deliberate criminality. That’s going too far, and the gambling world can shove it.
October 23rd, 2025 at 11:33 am
It will be interesting to see what happens in NOLA this Sunday. If we just play a full 60 minutes with a balanced game plan we should win. No matter what kind of officiating we get.
I did notice today that the FBI broke up a NBA gambling scandal that involved at least one player shaving points. Involving organized crime.
The NFL needs to keep it’s nose clean and crack down heavily on officiating nonsense.
October 23rd, 2025 at 11:33 am
We need a Commish who has more goals than just globalization of the NFL.
October 23rd, 2025 at 11:34 am
Horrible officiating! Agree with others too, I am not a conspiracy type of person, but it gets you wondering if there isn’t some type of script for what teams they want to see in the play-offs and Super Bowl.
October 23rd, 2025 at 11:36 am
There’s a very simple reason why the call was overturned. Vegas wasn’t willing to lose the amount of money bet on the spread. The NFL is beholden to bookies now. Football is now WWE Sports Entertainment.
October 23rd, 2025 at 11:38 am
It’s in the can. No use revisiting it – on to NO.
October 23rd, 2025 at 11:41 am
If I didn’t love the Bucs so much I’d give the NFL the middle finger permanently.
October 23rd, 2025 at 11:43 am
The NFL is rigged. Just like the NBA. I harped on this a few months ago. Sports should never have gotten into bed with gambling. If you don’t see it, it’s because you’re looking the other way and don’t want to see it.
October 23rd, 2025 at 11:46 am
Rod Munchy here. The false overturn is Bakers fault. Baker lost the game. Referees did their Job correctly and the defense did a fantastic job especially on that long lions TD run. Note this is a spoof
October 23rd, 2025 at 11:51 am
We must lead the league in getting effed by the refs. From the Egbuka reception vs the jets that the refs didnt want to look at under two minutes to the Otton plays in this game. I dont know what to say anymore.
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:00 pm
The refereeing this season along with New York center that makes the reviews are awful across the league. Its way worse than other years.
If you watch all the games there are glaring mistakes happenning.
Its ridiculous and the big issue is that they not care to fix it.
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:06 pm
“On second look” Never heard that before.
NFL isn’t rigged but it’s not level either.
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:06 pm
Munch gibes baker the loss then he has to give baker 4 of the wins , it’s got to go both ways brother!
Baker played bad,, The refs didn’t help, Detroit was mad from the week before and at home .
Team wins and team loses ,, if I had to site one thing that can never happen again it’s Rushing 11 times and Passing over 50, not many teams have won with abandoning the run that fast ,, so I’m hoping Grizz got a little lesson in why we have to be commited to the run game!
The interception was BS but it didn’t change the outcome of this game
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:08 pm
Just heard the FBI has completed a sting operation centered on gambling fraud and game fixing in the NBA.
I wonder when they’re going to take a look at NFL officiating.

As Evans and David, Vea start to retire… I think I will fade away from NFL. I have thought about not spending so much time invested and every year the NFL makes it easier but the Bucs are good and I wanna see them win, I want to see Evans and David win. Injuries are devastating this dream.
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:15 pm
Between this and what’s happening in the NBA right now with the FBI arrests, no one can tell me the the system isn’t rigged. I’m sure outcomes across all sports, are manipulated far more than fans will ever want to know.
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:17 pm
I had the game muted on another TV and was so confused and shocked when it was overturned and was wondering what the commentators were saying.
I had no doubt it was going to stay a catch based on it being ruled that way initially, for all of the reasons stated by Blandino. I wasn’t even really worried. So when it was overturned I was genuinely just shocked and confused lol.
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:18 pm
There has been too much weird stuff in the NFL lately to not think there is something going on.
That freakshow Titans Cardinals game comes to mind. Players & refs seem in on it lol
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:23 pm
The “wrestled reception” thing isn’t new either.
See the Dallas game last year when the refs stole a TD from JMac. He caught and possessed the ball IN THE ENDZONE before the Dallas defender wrestled the ball away. He didn’t have to try too hard because JMac knew it was already a TD. Refs give it to Dallas, NO REVIEW.
Two games later,(I think against the Panters?) the exact same process except we were on defense and it occurred about midfield. Down by contact, even though he never went to the ground.
I hate to think just how much time it would take to document the bad, missed, blatantly biased calls by IMO dirty refs. I’m talking calls that change the outcome of games. not just penalty yards.
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:27 pm
All water under the bridge for nought. Don’t sleep on the Saints. We must go into the Bye at 6-2. Look at our schedule immediately following. 3 real tough teams in a row. We need that padding.
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:29 pm
When I saw NO TOP LIP Hussy as the lead ref I knew we were doomed, don’t forget the DEFENSIVE trip on Mayfield as well. If these bad calls did get called correctly or called, would have it change the outcome of the game? Seeing how we won our first 3 within the last 3 mins I would say yes it could have. This game was more close that it looked. The ref’s are shady as hell but maybe they’re doing what their told from above. For years I always thought these swamies who set the betting lines were way to good…. Now NFL and gambling are lockstep I’m very convinced it’s RIGGED!!! GO BUCS!
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:32 pm
To me, the NFL needs to really review the officiating in this game! It was piss poor. I am not saying the Bucs would’ve won based on it, but in crucial moments of the game it sure felt like Cambell had the refs in his pocket. Mic drop
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:38 pm
Watch More All22
You hit it on the head. Your comments I agree with 100%. They showed that Gibbs 78 yard replay and I told my wife, there are 2 holding calls on that play that were not called. Joe Buck & Troy Aikman went silent and did not dare to call them out. They were glowing over the Lions from the kickoff. You knew who they betted on that night and it wasn’t the Bucs.
This game reminded me of the Bucs -Ravens last year. They pretty much out physicalled us at the line of scrimmage. Baker never looked comfortable.
Hopefully the refs won’t be against us in New Orleans.
Go Bucs!
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:38 pm
The defender didnt intercept the ball. He intercepted Ottens arm, which held the ball. Made no sense and may have cost us another late game comeback
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:41 pm
I agree. I think it was a boarder-line call… Which means, you have to go with what the initial call was on the field. Other than that one call, I think the ‘officiating’ was very consistent and on-point. They didn’t miss many. And, it wasn’t all just one-way. There were PLENTY of times throughout the game (especially in the first-half), where Detroit Fans went literally, NUTS.
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:41 pm
I also think punching the ball should be a flag when you miss the ball and punch the player,, maybe even a toss out of the game ,, the punch out on SS was legit but the guy that threw 6 haymakers and missed them all , that should be a flag
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:48 pm
Otten NEVER “controlled” that ball, and it was crystal clear. Did anyone actually, WATCH the replay. You can’t give him a “CATCH” there. Period. Because, it wasn’t one. Maulet made a helluva play on it, and you have to give it to him. Correct Call.
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:48 pm
“The NFL is rigged”…stop! Was the officiating horrible, yes it was. Is there a possibility a ref could be paid off, sure. But that would be a one off case, not enough to feed into all the conspiracy theorists on this site.
Also, keep in mind the Lions fans were booing the refs loudly on a couple of perceived miss calls. So they thought they got screwed as well. Objectively, the Bucs did get screwed, but not because the NFL is like “wrestling” and it’s not rigged.
October 23rd, 2025 at 12:56 pm
The one one that was overturned on the Otten first-down, saying he was short. Should NOT have been overturned. It was not crystal clear with a good enough view, to say 💯 that the ball did not reach the very front end of that yard marker. It was close enough, that it should not had been overturned. But, I have no problem with the INT. The guy made a better play and got TWO hands on the ball, while Otten was still trying to fumble around with it like between his shoulder and bicep. The ‘tie’ usually goes to the receiver, but I believe that the Lions’ Defender established full-control himself, FIRST.

October 23rd, 2025 at 1:02 pm
@ Lightningvinny1 – I agree with that 💯. It’s getting totally outta control. They are definitely going to have to address it. There was a play earlier in the season where the running back was literally punched in THE FACE and causing him to fumble on the goal-line. It’s a joke. Hell, it would’ve been an assault out on the street. I’ve been noticing it A LOT more this season.
October 23rd, 2025 at 1:16 pm
I honestly, think it’s pretty weak to be ‘the dude’ who’s always blaming the refs for every game your team loses. It’s a tough job. You win some and you lose some. There are times when you can legitimately question certain games, & etc. But, most of the time, you just need to move on. It’s just the way it goes. It’s a fast game and they’re not going to get EVERY freaking call. That’s why you just need to focus on doing YOUR JOB (as a player, coach, and team) and don’t put YOURSELF in the position to even ‘allow’ the officials to become a part of the outcome. Sometimes, the calls just don’t always go your way. Take them completely out of the equation, by winning so big that they can’t.

Really dude?!
You need help with that multiple personality disorder.
And that wasn’t the only call in question. For instance, bringing a receiver down by the collar(horse collar) before the ball arrives is USUALLY 1005 a PI call not to mention the personal foul. Dancing over the unconscious player afterwards coulda shoulda woulda been a taunting penalty on top of that!
But no flag
Perhaps if the long rushing TD by Gibbs was called back for the MULTIPLE holding penalties that weren’t called we would have been protecting a lead in the 4th instead of playing catch-up.
Any ONE of these calls could have changed the direction of the game. But they were NOT the only bad calls.
October 23rd, 2025 at 1:24 pm
The refs were garbage in this game and everyone knew what was going to happen before the game started. Lions got screwed against the chiefs and the NFL was going to repay them against the Bucs. NFL needs to hire full time refs and start calling these games fair. To much money is now involved in these games for this kinda of crap happening.
October 23rd, 2025 at 1:27 pm
The NFL is somehow worse at officiating games now than they were before instant replay.
Instant replay is fine, so long as they call the plays consistently across the board. It’s simple, coaches challenge, the coach explains what they want challenged, and that is all they look at for that play. It’s not an examination of all 22 players on the field and what they’re doing.
Take the inside of 2 minute automatic booth review away. They called it a catch on the field. Let meathead Campbell challenge it if he wants to, otherwise let the game play on.
At some point the refs on the field have to have some skin in the game
October 23rd, 2025 at 1:27 pm
NFL officiating sucks whether you think they got this call right or not. Where was the tripping call on the Mayfield sack? It was obvious. One thing I give the NFL credit for is that they are consistent, their officiating sucks and it continues to be that way year in and year out….while the commissioner is smiling and talking about who is performing during the Super Bowl halftime show! Waiting for him to announce they will have the useless Pro Bowl games as the halftime show as they continue to force that garbage down your throat too…..
October 23rd, 2025 at 1:28 pm
The NFL had already decided how this game would end. Bucs could have scored 21-0 in the first half and every pass in the second would be P I no. Lions would score every time.
October 23rd, 2025 at 1:28 pm
crazy with all this new technology that somehow the refs seem worse guess them betting lines are more important than honest games 😉
October 23rd, 2025 at 1:31 pm
Honestly for that play, Otton didn’t have two hands on the ball throughout the whole catch. So the dual control argument for that play doesn’t hold water. My gripe is with the NFL being allowed to overrule officials inside of the last two minutes of every half. It’s a crutch for the officials
The bigger gripe is with the overturned 4th down that basically gave the Lions two reviews on one play. I want to hear the leagues explanation of that one.
October 23rd, 2025 at 1:37 pm
Ya Tucker, agreed, new technology if they know how to use it right without interfering with it.
Sometimes we have a very long pause while the refs are all thinking about it after throwing flags. It’s like, is it that hard to decide. You all threw the flags.
October 23rd, 2025 at 1:49 pm
A lot of you people clearly show how much you don’t understand football. Dean Blandino is a joke and it was clear otton didn’t have the ball. When reviewing the play for the “double look” you call it. They clearly explained to you numb nuts that everything is reviewed including spot/line to gain and he was short in the 20 videos they showed of it. You are the problem with sports when you still argue obviously correct calls. Just like the morons who boo when a call is overturned when it was 150% correct to overturn it. You come off stupid
October 23rd, 2025 at 1:53 pm
heyjude, don’t let the conspiracy theorists get to you. The refs aren’t bought off. We got beat. Threw the ball lousy, got beat up on the OLine, and didn’t even try to run it. A fumble and a pick. Sometimes the refs are suckier than usual but overall they do a good job. The football team that earns the win usually gets the win. That’s never changed.
October 23rd, 2025 at 1:55 pm
Surprised we don’t have more people blaming Todd for bad officiating.
October 23rd, 2025 at 2:00 pm
I’d actually pay for a subscription to hear the conversation these refs are having w/NY and when they huddle. Also, are refs required to submit a full financial disclosure and random drug testing? Some one or something seems compromised and it would be nice to filter it out.
October 23rd, 2025 at 2:03 pm
Tbh, their condos should be a required broadcast option for full disclosure, like SAP. Id much rather listen to that then Troy’s mundane blather

October 23rd, 2025 at 2:08 pm
More offensive was the missed call on the ME13 mugging.
October 23rd, 2025 at 2:09 pm
I agree with many that say the Bucs didn’t deserve to win that game. They got outplayed for the most part, however, many teams have won games when they didn’t deserve to so that’s not a good reason to give the refs a pass.
Yeah Lions got jobbed on a couple but a Wirfs false start compared to the game changing plays that went against us isn’t the same thing.
The poor refereeing is one thing and we see it every week, but we don’t see the narrative that it is going to happen to one team cause it happened to another the week before. That happened and then it came to fruition. Thats bull.
A star player chasing a record got seriously injured and we didn’t even get a flag! Go watch those replays and tell me Evans didn’t catch that either cause I think he did. On to NO and I am done here but that game was a joke.
October 23rd, 2025 at 2:12 pm
Our offense has had very, very few turnovers this year, and now two of them are absolute BS
October 23rd, 2025 at 2:12 pm
Kenton, I usually agree with you, however my eyes aren’t deceiving me yet lol. I am thinking back to other seasons too. Just saying. A lot of missed calls on the opposing teams.
October 23rd, 2025 at 2:39 pm
If this garbage is not fixed then these so called ref’s should be fired TODAY.
They should either be in prison or looking for jobs. Absolute bull.
October 23rd, 2025 at 2:47 pm
Yes, the article uses the Otten play to start this conversation, but lets be very clear, that was NOT the only example of officiating bias. Yes, the Otten play can go either way, the point is that it was reviewed and confirmed, then re-reviewed and overturned. I don’t recall ever seeing that done before and don’t know the NFL’s actual rule about the process. I can say that it is a very bad look.
As I have mentioned before, there are numerous examples of bad calls/non calls that point to officiating bias. Several of those calls could have flipped the outcome of the game. It’s easy for smug knowitalls to argue it didn’t make a difference because the rules don’t have room for do-overs. Here’s a clue to those numbnutses. We don’t want a do-over, we just want fair. A little accountability wouldn’t hurt either.
When a receiver gets mauled, I want to see a flag. When I can see a punch thrown, why can’t the refs? If one team gets flagged for taunting, the other team should get the same treatment. All scores are reviewed, right? Then why cant we catch missed holding calls. Cheating is cheating.
This call for fairness applies to both teams. It’s not really a win if you are the one getting away with this crap. Granted, It sounds like I’m always “crying” about it always going against us. There’s a reason for that, In 49+ years of watching Bucs games, I can honestly say that I can count the “fair” games on two hands with fingers left over. Not advantaged, just fair. I’m sure I’ve missed some, and I have to admit my bias for my preferred team, but out of more than 750 games in the books, I feel very confident that over 90% were NOT fairly called. What’s up with that?
October 23rd, 2025 at 2:56 pm
You don’t have to have 2 arms on the ball to catch it. I saw no evidence that shouldn’t have been a catch. Tie goes to the offense and that’s the only rule at play here.
The 4th down call on the Otton catch was also was ridiculous as well as the lack of PI on Evans and personal foul tripping and not calling the obvious holds on the Gibbs run.
One team went into that game realizing they weren’t going to be called for any penalties and took advantage of it big time.
October 23rd, 2025 at 3:00 pm
Evans totally got mugged in that game from the first whistle. If the refs are going to allow it, he’s going to have a heckuva time having any more catches in the NFL.
October 23rd, 2025 at 3:01 pm
@Kenton
The football team that earns the win usually gets the win. That’s never changed.
************************************************************
When you play it clean, but get flagged…
When the other guy doesn’t play it clean, and doesn’t get flagged…
Makes for a pretty steep hill to climb to “earn” it, don’t you think?
I realize that the refs are human and no more perfect than I. Obviously, perfection is unattainable. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for fair though.
October 23rd, 2025 at 3:06 pm
Blandino says he would have called it a catch by the defense on the field. It was clear that Otton was the first with hand on the ball then the defender put his hands on the ball and they wrestled to the ground trying to gain sole control which Otton was able to do. So the call on the field was correct and should not have been overturned.
October 23rd, 2025 at 3:31 pm
The margin of error is so fine in this league, it just takes a couple phantom calls or bad calls to change the outcome of games. This is exactly what the league is doing, I don’t understand the amount of blown or clearly one sided officiating otherwise. NFL officiating is a joke!!!!
October 23rd, 2025 at 3:35 pm
I bet it was the refs being either to scared to call it the right way or they was paid but either way the game was rigged it only happens on our quote on quote big games anything that we consider to be a big gang for us as in most likely Monday night Thursday night for the games when we come out at 5 o’clock usually we get royally screwed by the refs whether it’s Antoine not getting the calls that he should get Mike Evans not getting the calls that he should get players deliberately running into Jamel dean and getting the first down. Mayfield getting hit late most of the time if baker was brittle like burrow he would have been hurt last year bad for sure .It never goes right on any of the games that we have on a big stage.
October 23rd, 2025 at 3:46 pm
2 guys caught the ball and a tie goes to the offense. Simple. No matter how it was ruled on the field, that is the way it should have been called. Neither visibly had more control than the other. If the defense did, at the very least they should have ended up with the ball. They didn’t.
October 23rd, 2025 at 3:47 pm

Im assuming by “not level” that would mean certain teams get calls and other teams get screwed. Sounds an awful lot like rigging to me.

And this is charged as an interception against Mayfield…..an absolute crime.

The fact your first response isn’t about how it screwed the team, could have cost them game, but instead you’re first thought is about it hurting Baker’s stats … that’s why everyone hates the Baker Boi(s).

But how are the refs supposed to know that a tie on a reception goes to the offense? It’s impossible to know that since this has never happened before and wasn’t in the rule book.
