Chris Godwin Is Sore

October 6th, 2025

Chris Godwin

Yeah, iconic big-money Bucs receiver Chris Godwin didn’t look good yesterday in Seattle, a week after his debut against the Eagles following 11-plus months of recovery from a disclocated ankle.

Should that be expected?

Joe can’t say. The Bucs have not been transparent about Godwin’s surgeries and recovery timetables and processes. It’s possible Godwin is way ahead of schedule, virtually healthy and just rounding into football shape. It’s also possible he won’t be himself until 2026.

Joe has no clue (and neither do you).

What Joe does know is Godwin had a rough non-catch yesterday after a bad bobble, and he also appeared almost gimpy on the CBS broadcast.

Is he injured? Todd Bowles didn’t say ‘No’ when asked about Godwin this afternoon. Bowles said he knows Godwin is sore.

The head coach offered no details. Sore ankle, sore shoulder, sore knee, sore eyes from watching the Bucs’ defense? Bowles didn’t say.

  1. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Sadly,

I think this the end year for CG in Tampa…..love dude…but he’s just too beatup to play now…..

  2. Outrigger Says:

Hopefully he’s just rounding into football shape. Any word on when Mike will be back, hopefully no later than the Detroit game.

  3. James Willie Says:

It took him time to come back from his last injury to have a great beginning to 2024. Let’s give him some time. No need to fill a blank page with “What is wrong with Chris Godwin” stories for several weeks.

  4. JA Says:

Why the lack of transparency? Either he’s injured or he is not.
I don’t think he’s recovered enough to be a major part of an opponent’s game plan as he’s obviously not in full football shape after the long layoff.
Moreover, his injury from last year has also been cloaked in secrecy.
    Why?
Is Godwin a CIA operative, or a football player?

  5. Thomas Edrington Says:

With the rise of EE and the upward (hopefully) track of Jayden McMillan — Godwin and his fat contract could get jettisoned after 2025

  6. pewter941 Says:

Why the lack of transparency? Because we dont want other teams to know how beat up we are duh. Or give them a competitive advantage.

  7. Fred McNeil Says:

He isn’t my biggest worry. He will be ok.

  8. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

Godwin would look way better out there if he would stop dropping balls and hang onto them instead.

  9. Smarter than Joe Says:

Not a smart move to pay him and not add another edge rusher, LB or DL

Godwin is a great story and I know Licht values paying his guys over Wins but he looks washed

  10. Durango 95 Says:

No question that the greatness that is Chris Godwin is not here for all to see. No telling when the greatness returns. If the greatness returns next season or if it doesn’t return at all. Sobering thoughts..As it is often pointed out..Father Time remains undefeated.

  11. JA Says:

    Pewter——

Do you think you’re fooling anybody by keeping Godwin’s injury a secret?
    Haha. Sure we are …

  12. Allen Lofton Says:

Other teams don’t gives health concerns on their players so JOEBUCSFAN
why is it a crime for Todd Bowles 😐 to do what every teams does. It could worst if Bill Billechet was the coach in Tampa.

  13. Hodad Says:

Damaged goods. Between his ankle, and his knee he’s on his last legs. If he has another injury, or setback with his ankle it’ll be time to hang em up.

  14. KC Buc Says:

Lol sore from watching the defense, me too, me too Joe. But it all washes down smooth when the offense is straight gasoline!!

I think Godwin will be fine after the bye. A lot of rust for sure and we know his fire pushed him to be on the field asap. Just needs more reps to find those hands of glue again.

  15. Walt Says:

He converted multiple first downs so it’s not like he was terrible.

  16. DBS Says:

It’s none of your business. The Bucs don’t answer to you even though you think you’re entitled to know everything about everyone.

  17. Gipper Says:

Relax. Coming back from injuries takes time. By midseason( game 8) CG14 will be rounding into form. By playoff time his speed will be 95%. He will look like the same great player we all remember. This guy is money.

  18. pewter941 Says:

JA obviously we are, because you’re over here asking if hes injured or not on your posts.

  19. Fred Says:

He will be ok being sore is part of the game and he’s been off the field for a while.
So i expected to hear this. Keep working your back Chris.

  20. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘What Joe does know is Godwin had a rough non-catch yesterday after a bad bobble’.

I don’t get it Joe. Pro-Football-Reference shows Godwin with 4 targets, catches for 26 yards and 47 offensive snaps (77%).

I didn’t think I saw him in there very much after the 1st qtr (I thought he was outta the game actually), but those were the stats they were reporting. Any insight?

  21. NJBucsfan23 Says:

It took me 2 years to get over my displaced talus in my right foot. I had major surgery and recovery was tough. It will take him time, get your rest CG Jr.

  22. CyberDilemma Says:

Slamming on the Buc’s defense, Joe? How good did Seattle’s defense look yesterday giving up 426 yards to the Bucs? Seattle supposedly has one of the top ranked defenses in the league so far this season. BOTH teams had numerous DB’s out yesterday. That is what you get when you are stuck playing a Kinder Vildor and a Josh Hayes. The Bucs D provided two timely turnovers in what was gonna be a shootout from the get go. I’ll give them a pass on this one, especially after they pitched a shutout in the second half against Philly last week.

  23. 813BUCBOI Says:

    i thought CG14 had 2 catches

and as joe mentioned, he didnt look himself after his first injury until the 24season…

i think bowles should put him on a pitch count…Tez, Shep and even k.johnson are starting to flash

    GO BUCS!!!!

  24. Buckybucs Says:

Damn some of this fanbas can be insufferable. It is his 2nd game back from a major injury, they would have eased him back if Evans didn’t pull hammy. He converted some good plays.

  25. heyjude Says:

Chris will be fine. Not worried at all. We will probably never know how bad the injury really was. He’s looking good. Has some drops and so do others in the league. Of course he is sore today, along with other players too. Go Bucs!

  26. Greg-therealone Says:

“He looks washed”? That’s idiotic. This was his second game back from a major injury. What? You thought he was just going to drop back in and have a 150 yard game? And what exactly was Bowles supposed to say?

Maybe he makes it back from this injury and maybe he doesn’t. The only thing we KNOW is that we don’t know anything yet. Its the second game!

  27. 813BUCBOI Says:

    CYBER

SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE FOLKS IN THE BACK!!!!

    4-1!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  28. Usfbucs Says:

He is going to get back into shape and recover. Late this season we are going to have crazy mismatches with our WR group. Nobody better than our 6 WR once healthy.

  29. Bucsalltheway Says:

Getting aj green and Jeremy Mackin vibes from dude we know how they ended up..I have faith I just believe he is just not there yet

  30. Let em bake Says:

Geesh … give him time. Next week, these same babies will watch baker throw a pick and cry “damaged goods!”

  31. BigPoppaBuc Says:

I have complete faith CG14 will continue to grind and heal and get back to making big plays. This dude is built different and Egbuka’s early success got some of y’all forgetting that. Godwin is a cornerstone of this organization. He’s not going anywhere.

  32. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

We owe Godwin time to get into game shape. I would be glad to bet he will have a key moment, game, etc this year that propelled us to victory. I can only imagine what he’s been through physically and now mentally to get in game shape. He’s not even an issue right now if we can get Evans back. The front 7 is the primary concern and the reason we won’t progress past the first and second rd out the playoffs. You want a good secondary, get a good pass rush. A legit 4 man rush, with the fundamentals of tackling and angles will go along way to our success. We have a window again so be thankful for that, we just have to take advantage of it.

    I don’t get it Joe.

    I’m not surprised.

    Try reading the quote again.

Only this time pretend you are not a full-on dork.

    Might help.

  34. TampaBayBucFan Says:

Hard for me to believe anyone could lose faith with Chris Godwin…….

This is Chris Godwin we are talking about….he’ll be fine…..

  35. BakerFan Says:

Least of anyone’s worries should be Godwin, now Special Teams and their coach should be what everyone should be worried about. You can’t have ST and Defense sucking soooo bad, that is 2 of the 3 phases of the game which will lead to important losses in crucial games.

  36. Saskbucs Says:

Not concerned about CG. At the moment he is a complimentary piece like Shepard and Otton. We are paying a lot for that but with the rise of EE2 and Evans surely close to return, we don’t need anymore.

Full speed for playoffs, just need our 3 headed WR monster ready for January. Pressure will be mounting on Grizzard to put up 50 when everyone is back healthy. Hype machine for this offense gonna be outta control.

  37. BucsFan81 Says:

Love Chris but hate to say with the emergence of Ebuka and Tez Johnson plus eventually getting JMAC back it might be time to move on from some of the older guys and start cooking with the young talent on the roster. If Evans doesn’t get back soon Ebuka is going to take his place.

  38. Saskbucs Says:

When Godwin is healthy, Egbuka is currently opening so much space for Evans when he returns. I hope Mike is back this week and Baker is ready to start getting him the 150 yard games!

  39. HC Grover Says:

He may be done for. Or may be OK with some more time off. I doubt playing is doing him any good.

  40. SlyPirate Says:

Love CG but I don’t think they should have signed him. Injuries are piling up. An ankle injury for +1 year. He’s washed. Not hating. The NFL is rough.

  41. Nano107 Says:

    Out of playing shape simple
All this geniuses giving medical verdicts

  42. David Says:

It is all speculation, but my guess is he may have been rushed back a couple weeks early because of Mike going down. Regardless, I think he will get back into football shape and be just fine over the next couple weeks.

  43. Lord Cornelius Says:

Thought he looked OK actually outside of not catching that one pass. I’ve been surprised he’s even playing after what that injury looked like last year lol. Love that guy and hope he can get healthy

  44. Watch Daddy Sling It Says:

Understanding this is not really appropriate thread for this post: NFL fines Eagles LB Jalyx Hunt $6834 for illegal hip drop tackle on Bucky (fumble) that “should have been penalized”.

  45. @Hands2theFace Says:

“sore eyes from watching the Bucs’ defense?” Now that’s funny. Love you guys! I know one of you likes well-done prime rib, and that’s disgusting, but I love you all.

  46. Kenton Smith Says:

I’m probably wrong but I think he’s got a little hamstring pull. I saw him pull up a little. He was progressing fast. Just watch. It may be the back half of this season but he’ll right back to being one of our best receivers.

  47. TexasBuc 1776 Says:

Love Chris, outside of Antonio Brown (and so far EE), best hands of any Buc receiver I’ve seen. Got to give him some time before tearing our hair out.

  48. Buc1987 Says:

    Hopefully it’s just rust.

    Go Bucs!

    4-1 baby!

  49. Don’t make a scene 35 Says:

Joe that was well written and fair!

And for all of you arm chair football and injury experts
Stop acting like you have a clue on what trauma hits the body in years of football at the highest level

Who is soft and who is tough, give me a break!

    Go back to your recliner

    Go Bucs

  50. Buc1987 Says:

Still no sign of Jeff or Neal Cooter.

Two fans that hate their own team.

  51. Defense Rules Says:

Durango 95 … The question related to the statement ‘What Joe does know is Godwin had a rough non-catch yesterday’ versus what Pro-Football-Reference was reporting (3 catches) after the game. PFR also showed that Chris played a high number (47) of snaps.

Joe sounded very concerned that Chris might’ve re-injured himself (‘he also appeared almost gimpy on the CBS broadcast’). That SHOULD concern all true Buc fans, because all of us want to see him back to 100% as quickly as possible. Apparently doesn’t concern you Durango, but I’m sure it does the true Buc fans.

  52. Fanofdabucs Says:

CG was noticeably limping in the 2nd half. Hopefully nothing more than typical muscle fatgue and soreness after such a long lay off. As for his “bad bobble” on the dropped pass, he was looking right back into the sun, so not a hufe deal.

CG will be just fine once hes back in football shape. This is basically preseason game #2 for him.

  53. SB~LV Says:

    Well yeah!
His ankle was 90 degrees to his leg!
He is playing football on that ankle a year later.
That ankle is going to remind him for the rest of his life!
Hell yeah it hurts like F!

  54. buc4evr Says:

He’s not in football shape yet and his timing is off. Give him a few games to get back in the groove.

  55. Donald G Says:

Wow Unbelievable how fast some of you turn on Godwin.Give the dude a chance.

  56. BigZ Says:

This is why you don’t pay (22 mil per) an almost 30 year old receiver with TWO serious injuries out of three years. Think what that and Reddick’s salary could of bought. Oh, a pass rusher. I like Chris, but I like my team much more.

Think, will anyone pay Tyreek Hill that next year? Nope.

  57. Smarter than Joe Says:

Would be nice to use Godwin’s $22 Million towards a position of need. Bucs front office needs to be better about overpaying the Licht Draftees and improve this team

  58. Bucs15 Says:

So he comes back early with absolutely zero football activity for 10 months and some of you expect him to be in mid-season form in game 2? GTFO. Give the man some time to work back into football shape FFS.

  59. Smarter than Joe Says:

I’m a Buccaneer fan, I really like Godwin and glad he’s done well here but I was never a fan of the re signing due to the injury history. I want the Bucs to succeed way more than any one player

I believe Todd is an inferior coach, but once kickoff happens I am rooting for him and the Bucs like crazy

  60. BuccinBaker6, Says:

I don’t think they will get rid of Chris I believe they will let him get back to where he was an I for one would t count Chris out he will be fine he is just getting into football shape an getting his legs under him an getting up to game speed

  61. View from 132 Says:

Anyone upset we don’t know details should call the gambling hotline. Chris will be there late season, and the Bucs may need to him to be when Egbuka hits the rookie wall and has a few games that aren’t highlight reels.

  62. Oxycondomns Says:

its a catch 22 the players like playing for the bucs and the organization makes sentimental decisions like keeping bowles and godwin. they want to build a team with character instead of making intelligent ruthless type of decisions . they want to bulld a culture here . its hard to fault .

  63. GenocideD Says:

Ease up and let the good dude continue to heal. We’re lucky we’ve got him back on the field this soon. Good receivers don’t forget how to catch well.
    Just have some patience.
Where’s the article about what a turd SirSloucheeyeah Dennis was a bunch of times yesterday. Out of position, poor tackling, loafing. That’s a story.

  64. Rob Says:

If I recall correctly, his injury was to his ankle, not his hands. I can understand taking time to get his speed, explosiveness and fitness back. What I can’t understand is why his hands are now an issue.

  65. Rod Munch Says:

Called it two weeks ago, Godwin would get off to a slow start, and then in the 49ers game, he should get 100 yards or so. As teams focus on e2, Godwin should get some better match-ups, and even if he’s only 80%, going against 2nd and 3rd string corners (or worse, not sure how banged up the 49ers are), he should still win those match-ups and has had a couple of games to shake off the rust. He’ll be fine.

    ———–

He hasn’t played or practiced in a year until about 2 weeks ago. There’s a reason teams have offseason programs, training camp and why they practice multiple times a week.

  67. Deuceswild78 Says:

If he’s playing every snap after just coming back I’m sure that isn’t good. I would have eased him back even with Evans out

  68. #1bucsfan Says:

He played a lot last game and again this week. It’s a big load for a guy who almost missed a full year of football. He’s deff sore and just getting back into the swing of things will take a little time. He’s not done or to beat up or going anywhere. It took some time after his acl then he lit the nfl on fire and this time will be no diff. He loves Tampa and Tampa loves him.

  69. Destinjohnny Says:

    He isn’t ready
    Shep should get his reps

  70. Destinjohnny Says:

    Best man plays

  71. orlbucfan Says:

813: YOU’RE A CHARACTER! 🙂 Give Chris a break! There are finesse moves that go down in actual game situations. The only way he can get back to full form is to play ball. Give the man time! Sheesh, he’s just starting to play after coming back from a SEASON ENDING injury. Heck, after his injury, I was scared he would retire with his hands thrown up in disgust. Both his injuries were illegal hits, too, BTW.

  72. Jeffrey Becker Says:

we’d prolly be 5 and 0 if we hadn’t rushed him back.

  73. ‘74 Bucs Fan Says:

Godwin had a key 3rd down conversion late in the game.

Durango – calling DR a dork is a bit much. His posts are much better than yours imo.

  74. ModHairKen Says:

Anyone doubting Chris Godwin fails to appreciate the heart and desire of this young man.

We’ve seen it. Why doubt him?

Keep doing what you need to do to get healthy, CG.

    Okay I will help you.

Lol..Apparently you still don’t understand. Here’s the quote.

“What Joe does know is Godwin had a rough non-catch yesterday after a bad bobble,”

    Sigh.

Joe is not saying Godwin had no catches.

What he is saying is that on a specific play Godwin attempted to catch a ball that he badly bobbled ball which ended up as a non-catch.

Can you grasp that. It has NOTHING to do with the amount of catches he had yesterday. NOTHING. Zero.

Lol. Hello McFly..Is there anything in there? Lol. As far as Godwin’s injury I commented on that earlier in thread. Dude seriously. Maybe step outside and get some fresh air. This is not a good look for you.
