Chase McLaughlin Requested The Shot For Historic Field Goal

October 1st, 2025

So what’s the story behind the longest outdoor field goal in NFL history, 65 yards, converted Sunday by Bucs kicker Chase McLaughlin?

It seems McLaughlin raised his hand and yelled, “put me in, Coach!”

McLaughlin has had a wild ride of a season after missing kicks in Weeks 1 and 2.

Todd Bowles said on his Buccaneers Radio Network show that he’s enjoyed McLaughlin’s revival and it was McLaughlin who pressed to make the historic attempt to close the first half.

“We were almost just ready to just punt it and go for it or just throw a Hail Mary pass, and he wanted to try it,” Bowles said. “And the fact that he wanted to try it gave me confidence in letting him try it. And he kicked it through there.”

Wild about that field goal is McLaughlin came back and drilled a 58-yarder against the Eagles. That attempt felt like a gimme after the 65-yarder, and it turned out to be.

McLaughlin has now made multiple kicks of 50-plus yards in back-to-back weeks. That’s a first in franchise history.

Great to see him get back to it after a poor couple of weeks

  2. Tucker Says:

Now we just need the blockers to show up on special teams

  3. HopetheBucswin!! Says:

What’s the longest outdoor field goal with a W instead of an L? We are celebrating field goals while losing now? When do we get our participation trophies? The winning team could have been a little bit nicer to us in that game. Big meanies. Now if we could just learn to punt. Go Bowles!

  4. D-Rok Says:

Glad the FG team held their blocks just long enough on this historic attempt.

    Now about that punt team…

  5. TDS Says:

    @HopetheBucsWin!!

They still count stats in the NFL in losses, so why try to minimize the major achievement from a player on the team you supposedly support? An NFL and Team record is a big f-ing deal.

  6. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

That’s how you put your best foot forward.

  7. Baker Bowl Says:

I don’t get the big deal, obviously a cool achievement, but he’s tied for #2 for longest OUTDOOR field goal, not a real record. For me, this is the same as ‘Highest paid non-QB’, just a set of words to make the player and agent feel good about themselves.

I’m glad Chase is back making kicks, and long ones at that. Let’s not get carried away though. Keep kicking it through the yellow poles Chase.

  8. DungyDance Says:

Did we ever find out what the “I told you so” rhetoric from the Eagles was all about on the blocked punt? What was it they were keying on?

  9. Kidfloflo Says:

I don’t think people realize how close this guy was from being cut and making game winning fgs for another team! After his crappy start he was on the precipice of losing his job….and Bowles trots him out there in Jets game to try and make a 57yarder for his first kick of game! Which is a low % kick, and would otherwise be forgiven…but he HAD to make it to shake off the hounds, and did! Then backs it up with another 55 yarder in same game to save his Buccaneers career…then just goes off against the Eagles! What a stud, and impressed me with his mental fortitude, if he falters on that first jets kick our season is in peril, looking for his replacement, for possibly years…well done sir…well done

  10. Frank Pillow Says:

Anyone diminishing the significance of the kick is kidding themselves. I’m not just talking about records- I’m talking about how it sparked a team that play the entire 1st half of the game FLAT FLAT FLAT. Yes, a loss is a loss, but as much as we all like to criticize, let’s give the player his props here.

  11. Aqualung Says:

It’s an outdoor record. That’s a fact. Not tied with anything.

  12. 813bucboi Says:

i still cant believe that after chase missed a couple kicks bowles kept him on the team….i thought bowles said he was going to “fix” this….this is yet another example of why this team wont win with bowles…

rather than cut bait and sign an unknown kicker, bowles shows trust in this kid…

he keeps this trash kicker on the team who turns around and kicks a 65yard FG….

this is why we wont win…bowles doesnt “fix” anything….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  13. RASH Says:

Hey ” Hope the bucs win” Go Bowles……yeah go outta town. Defense stinks since Tom Brady days when he had { mis-communication} in playoffs letting Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp go 70 plus yards less than a minute to go beat us in play-offs blew chance at going to 2nd Super Bowl in a row. He has used the {mis-communication} excuse 4,217 times.. Change your pitiful soft zone mind set Saints last year 3rd and 13 lines lb’s 10 yds deep corners 13-15 and they immediately backpedal at snap like always and everybody always is open always back pedaling give up catch and run one missed tackle….Huge Plays.

  14. heyjude Says:

“Put me in coach, I am ready to play” – Chase was outstanding. After the 65 yards, it was like ya okay, he can do 58 yards.

  15. Woodman Says:

Rash right now the defense is the least of our problems. Why are you talking about last year this is a new year and the defense is playing well we gave up 200 yrds total. Right now the special teams is not playing well not to mention all the injures and 813 is a complete idiot talking about cutting our kick another team would have signed him in a heart beat. I can’t even tell if you are serious .

  16. 813bucboi Says:

    RASH

    you are absolutely correct!!!!!!

bowles still hasnt “fix” the mis communication issues that led us to a SB win….

bowles is the defensive guru….he’s the only coach in the nfl getting paid millions to coach football and he’s the only coach who has players getting paid millions of dollars…..bowles is going up against players and coaches who arent getting paid at all by the NFL…

it is completely unacceptable for bowles and his defense to give up any points thru out the season!!!!!….no one should score on us….EVER!!!!!…and if the offense or Special teams give up points, its bowles fault and he has to “fix” it!!!!

after wirfs, luke and cody all went down, i expected bowles to “fix” the oline and guide us to an undefeated season….not 3-1…the season is over at 3-1…we have 1 loss and lead the division but this team is trash…season is over because bowles cant “fix” being 3-1…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  17. Pickgrin Says:

Wow – tough crowd up in here today…

Great job Chase – and congrats on making the history books.

I remember that the 63 yard kick by club footed Tom Dempsey seemed impossible to break for the longest time – like 40+ years that stood as the longest FG in NFL history.

That mark has now been tied or bested by 11 players within the last 15 years…..

  18. 813bucboi Says:

    woodman

    thats the problem!!!!

the defense gave up 200yards….thats 200yards too many!!!!!!

its not like philly won the SB last year….its not like they have great players…

this team should be 17-0 by now not 3-1!!!!!!…

the season is over due to bowles!!!!!…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  20. Joe Sea Says:

Everyday I wonder if most these commentors like watching the Bucs and football in general.

Long field goal = cool. That’s really all there is to see here. Anyone putting more into it than that is a fun times thief.

  21. ChiBuc Says:

I love this story. Chase is a tub-thumper

  23. ChiBuc Says:

I can’t tell if half these post a tongue in cheek or if y’all just walking around with your d!k in your mouths. Sarcasm is more easily conveyed verbally than in writing and even then, few ppl appreciate it

  24. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

    @ChiBuc

It’s the former, I picked up on it when it got extremely repetitive and equally hialrious. Idk what 813 is on, but it’s probably Todd Bowles part. I just wish he used the space key a little more to give these lines more soft zone coverage between laughs. He’s been on a roll, with extra mustard and all the fixings

  25. Steven007 Says:

813, keep it up. Half the buffoons posting here don’t get it. But the rest of us enjoy. Just stuffed your tip jar with internet cash.

  26. 813bucboi Says:

    STEVE007

and they said you were an A-hole lol….

    losers!!!!!

my brothers @steve007 and @WBL, HAVE A GREAT EVENING!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  27. KABucs Says:

813, too much sarcasm in such a small space. LOL

The thing I find funny (not in a haha way) is we can’t block a guy who’s going to run in to block our punt (actually allows him to hurdle our center and guard) yet we can kick a 65 yard field goal with a super low trajectory and no one touches it. WT… ???
It seems I don’t understand special teams blocking at all. 😵‍💫
Maybe that’s what you get when you hire a special teams coach from the NYGs? Just sayin’.

  28. GoneGator Says:

    Chase is our MVP 😳

  29. orlbucfan Says:

813 has been the area code for Tampa as long as I’ve lived here. You sure sound like an idiot for a supposed long time Bucs fan. Chase is back to his usual making record kicks to help his team win. It also means he kinda-sorta trusts his ST. The ST disaster are partly injury-related. Add in a few bad calls by the ‘refs.’ Now, eliminate those 2 factors. See what I mean?

  30. Teacherman Says:

    He’s a resilient Scottish Celt!

    Well done McLaughlin!

You have made your clan proud!

    From a Maguire.

    Go Bucs!

Not blocked at all. Just that Joe has work to do that often takes him away from the site. So comments aren’t always approved or dug out of the pending queue as quickly as some want.

  33. BucVoyager Says:

63 yards stood for a very long time. Longest. outdoor kick is supposed to be celebrated no matter what.
