Brock Purdy Is Out; Mac Jones Will Start Against Bucs

October 10th, 2025

Vita Vea

It’s official, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, who has carved up the Bucs multiple times, will not play Sunday against Tampa Bay.

His bad toe isn’t ready. That means backup and former Patriots first-round pick Mac Jones will get the start. He’s been to a Pro Bowl and had a tough-guy performace to beat the Rams eight days ago, so Jones isn’t a reason to relax.

Jones is 3-0 as a starter this season and has thrown for 905 yards (301.7 per game) with six touchdowns and one interception. He’s no real threat to scramble, and he’s nursing a bad knee.

Also ruled out for San Francisco is defensive linemen Kevin Givens (pectoral) and Yetur Gross-Matos (knee, hamstring), along with wide receivers Ricky Pearsall (knee) and Jordan Watkins (calf).

    Let’s get after him, please!!!

  2. #99 the big fella Says:

Come on aqualung you haven’t turned this post, about how much you don’t like Bowles yet? You are slacking, you must be tired from all the male hugs you have been given

  3. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Any doubt that the “questionable” Mac Jones will Licht us up for 350+ yards?

  4. Bojim Says:

Gonna test the secondary and I am not confident.

  5. RaShad Says:

Mac Jones is a wounded duck. We must hit this guy early and often

  6. GoneGator Says:

Mac has more talent than Purdy.
No difference in preparation – we’ll prepare for the scheme.

    Lets go Bucs !!!

  7. Woodman Says:

Ironlung probably still drinking cause he can’t sleep because Bowels still living in his head rent free. I bet Todd sleeps well cause he don’t know who the he’ll Ironlung is would not care if he did know.

  8. Woodman Says:

Ironlung still living rent free in your head.

  9. Vanessa Anne Says:

We’ll still need to bring our “A” game this week.

The last time we played Mac Jones was the Brady-Belichick reunion game in New England when Jones was a rookie.

We eeked out a victory, but I thought Jones played really well for a guy who had less than a half dozen games to his career.

Oh, btw Joe, interesting choice of a picture for this post. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were trying to send a not so subtle message about what needs to happen to Mr. Jones and who needs to do it, lol.

    Sacks are drive killers…

  10. Aqualung Says:

Baker 40 Burgers or Bust. Dumb Fat Guy needs some cholesterol meds, stat.

  11. #99 the big fella Says:

    Lol I agree woodman

  12. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I assume the back-up QB will be the immortal Adrian Martinez from Nebraska/Kansas State.

  13. Esteban85 Says:

Gotta bust Mac in the mouth early and rattle his cage. Let’s go big #50

  14. buc4evr Says:

The key is to stop McCafferty. I the guy needs to be double teamed with tight over-under coverage. Stop him on the run and in the passing game. The guy needs to be accounted for on every single play.

  15. Gipper Says:

Doesn’t matter whether Mac Jones is immobile. The world has seen the frozen man, Kirk Cousins, pick apart the Bucs zero cover pass defense. Darnold did it as well last week. Baker will bail out Bowles on Sunday.

  16. orlbucfan Says:

McCafferty is getting long in the tooth. I remember when the Panthers drafted him. The 49ers are the ones with worries. Especially with Grizz opening up the offensive playbook. I would love to see the Bucs stomp them but I’m a realist. 5-1, Bucs!!

  17. BillyBucco Says:

They are saying Jones is questionable too.
Bout to see some Adrian Martinez against Bowels blitzes.
If the 49ers win, Shanahan can coach with anybody playing.

  18. John lynch Says:

Aqualung loves hugs from men.. stay away from that guy..
He also thinks aquaman was real .

  19. Weebs10 Says:

Back to back games against teams coming off a mini bye is tough

  20. #99 the big fella Says:

Aqualung don’t let the big fella name fool you.
Just ask your mom she will let you know

  21. FortMyersDave Says:

I am hoping that having Dean back in the lineup will help a bit and that Bowles will refrain from putting his edge rushers into coverage again and again. With Dean back, I think the D’s weak link will be SirVocea Dennis and that the 49ers will target him frequently. Hopefully Baker and his crew simply outscore the Niner O and that special teams do not grab its ankles again.

  22. Bucs4Ever Says:

Take Tonges over 34.5 yds receiving and over on receptions

SVD is gonna get eaten alive

Baker will have to outscore SF

  23. Aqualung Says:

The pretty ponies have found a 6th grade AI Bot. No original material though. What you’d expect from Threetards in a Vegwtative State.

    We love crappy defense! Yay!!!

  24. David Says:

Does not matter, they are the same QB. What will matter is if Reddick and Yaya suddenly have a light come on and figure out how to finish.

The other thing that will matter is if Todd Bowles realizes the second half of the Philly game was mostly dominant in shutting down their passing attack because they were playing a lot more tight man coverage and a lot less zone.
The more I watch I realize our top four cornerbacks and top three safeties are all better at man than they are zone.

  25. David Says:

They need to win this game because next week is at Detroit who are playing lights out. Then they can pick up a win against the Saints and go into the bye. After the bye they have 9 games and should easily be able to go 7-2, hopefully while getting healthier and healthier, and we should see them dominating some of those teams

  26. Aqualung Says:

David – Dan Campbell is the best coach in the nfl right now, he has three full time coordinators reporting to him, two are brand new , and he’s got the team firing on all cylinders. Now that’s a real head coach.

The only way we win that one is if we pull a 2019 Bucs Rams, where it’s 55-48 with Baker out scoring Goff at the end.

DannyC isn’t prone to look ahead, but he’s got to be licking his chops to atone for single handedly losing the Lions that game against the Bucs last season. The sad thing is, Our Geniusness has nothing to battle with. Not because he has no players, but he’s going into a gun fight and giving his guys nerf balls.

Blink and Bucs are 4-3 because the defense sucks and we’ll see where the Tdod Bleows Crusaders are, and what color their Pom Poms are in two weeks.

  27. MadMax Says:

Mac Jones is no joke! He will pick us apart if we dont get after him…..

  28. Christos Says:

Does not matter much since our beloved soft and passive Defense is 5th worst in opponents QB rating with 105.
Just sit back in soft zone and let him complete like 85 percent of his passes.

  29. heyjude Says:

Since Mac is rehabbing a bad knee, you never know what can happen. He is questionable too.

MadMax is right about Mac. Unfortunately, he is doing pretty good on the 49ers. The Bucs have been watching him and also Christian McCaffrey. The Bucs know what to do on Sunday. Go Bucs!

  30. Beeej Says:

David and Dennis will be covering CMC out of the backfield as per our scheme, not feeling good about this

  31. QBKilla Says:

Most every QB in the NFL carves up Bowles crappy pass defense

  32. BucU Says:

Sam Darnold had all day in the pocket. Clean uniform till the very end. I never seen such an anemic pass rush in my life. Reddick is done. Diaby is JTS lite. Braswell is invisible. Mac Jones is going to have a field day. You know it and I know it.

  33. Todd Says:

His name is McCaffrey NOT McCafferty , and you will see Tykee covering him like glue. 49ers don’t stand a chance. Baker will carve them up like Swiss cheese and the D will play much better , although forcing a turnover in the final minute to win a road game 3000 miles away is not bad.

  34. #99 the big fella Says:

Very nice aqua turd you have a few supporters

  35. Capt.Tim Says:

No Evan, no Godwin, no Zyon will be a tough group to replace, even with our talented rookie WR and CB.
Mac Jones is a smart QB. Only the stupidity of Beal I hear prevented him from becoming a very good NFL QB.

By the way, love seeing Bealicheag suck in the NFL, and now college.
Guy was ALWAYS a fraud. Brady made him look like a coach.
    He wasn’t.
