The Baker Mayfield Cannon

October 8th, 2025

The NFL published a fun video after last season. It showcased the top-9 longest throws since 2016 measured by yards in the air.

Guess who had two of those.

That’s right. It was Baker Mayfield.

The throws showcased were completions only.

Bo Nix of the Broncos had the longest throw since 2016. Mayfield ranked second with a 66.4-yard toss for a touchdown to Donovan Peoples-Jones with the Browns in 2021.

Mayfield also made the cut with a throw of 63.8 yards in his rookie season of 2018.

Joe brings this up because Mayfield’s bomb to Emeka Egbuka on Sunday went 63 yards in the air. Joe doesn’t have the precise NextGen Stats data, but rest assured this was a special throw.

The wild thing is Mayfield didn’t take a big run-up to unload the pass like he did to Peoples-Jones. Sunday’s was a very natural pocket throw.

What a beast!

I’m sure others have said this, but I only comment, I don’t read anything – but in the white jerseys, he looks a lot like Steve Young when he was here.

    Rocket!

  3. Durango 95 Says:

It could be seen in real time that, that bad boy was going for a ride. I watched as it hit its arc and knew that it was traveling. Shown live on an angle perpendicular to the field. It was sweet stuff. To quote Mike Holmgren..Rocket Ball!

  4. Durango 95 Says:

On the subject of Mayfield. Looking at the guy he looks like a regular dude. Not a chiseled athlete. Maybe like a guy that lives down the street or someone you saw at the corner store this afternoon. Another example of a measurable of height and weight that can be meaningless..6’1 220. Heck everybody in this forum knows someone that size, if not themselves.

😅 I can think of someone that said he had a weak arm…

    Dick Eater?

  7. GoneGator Says:

Top 3 in arm strength. That’s not new news to those who have followed Bakers career. We’ve been trying to tell yall since he got here.

Josh Allen knows the deal – he pointed to Baker when asked who the top arms in the league was. Distance, velocity, accuracy…. Baker is at least top 5 in arm talent.

  8. DBS Says:

I guess he never read the comments here. To short. Midget can’t see over the line. Weak arm that can’t throw the deep ball. All he can do is dink and dunk.

  9. Tucker Says:

Regular dude? Baker has got some crazy tree trunk legs he can squat the house as he would say.

  10. Sadaharu O. Says:

It was said that Doug Williams could throw the ball “from end zone to end zone” when he was drafted by the Bucs — no idea if that was true, but it sounds far-fetched given the 2016-2025 data.

Look, I get it, you ate lead paint chips as a kid, and your brain has turned to mush – but just to be clear, I’ve literally never said Baker has a weak arm – that is 100% fake news.

Now apologize for being a lying piece of trash and we can all move on.

  13. UKBuccaneer Says:

True Rod, you didn’t say Baker has a weak arm.

You did say “ Baker is what he is. He’s good at keeping plays alive in the pocket, and making throws less than 10 yards. If he’s asked to do more than that, he consistently fails” though.

baker’s power is lower body like spencer strider with the huge ass

i assume bo nix threw that in the thin air

    UK with the Win!

  17. Oscar Says:

Just saw an interview with Kurt Warner and Rich Eisen and Warner was commenting on how Baker is probably the best right now at the 15 to 35 yard chunk throws and how that is an indication of a qb playing at a very high level. I guess he’s not a dink and dunk quarterback after all. And I guess he can hit those bombs as well now that he has someone he can trust who can get deep. Mike Evans, as great as he still is, can’t get that deep fast enough for the long bomb. He’s still great on those go routes and everything else though.

  18. Drdneast Says:

Evans. because of his long legs, has a long stride so it is difficult to determine how fast he is going.

Inaccurate is not the same as not having a strong arm.

Also, yes, Baker has historically been inaccurate when passing beyond about 15 yards. Just look at the Joe’s weekly pass chart he posts. Also look at how the Bucs changed the offense last year to shorten up the passes, not just because of Sucke, but because Baker is great at the short passing game, and any coach worth anything will use a player in a way that makes the most of their ability. Also, even in a short passing game, you still take deep shots.

But with that said, Baker has been fantastic so far this year. If he can keep up this pace and avoid a slump, the Bucs will be one of the top teams in the league and Baker will stay in the MVP race.

  20. Buc1987 Says:

    We love u Baker!

  21. GoneGator Says:

Rod…. Just stop man. You were wrong and you talked a lot of smack about Baker and continue to bicker with Baker fans who’ve not forgotten all the krap you spewed and names you’ve called people when they disagreed. It’s only right that you should be reminded of your really bad take on our QB…..You’ve been relentless and now you just want everybody to forget what you’ve said or split hairs about exactly what you’ve said. Probably not going to happen.

You have made progress tho 🤣✌🏼

  22. Love-spiral Says:

    Cool description, Durango

  23. 1sparkybuc Says:

Doug Williams had a strong arm, but he also had the worst completion percentage of any QB the Bucs have ever had. He threw the ball like he dared any receiver to catch it. He had no touch. I believe his best year was right at 50 %. He improved greatly with the Redskins, but he sucked with the Bucs. Oh, and he put a curse on the franchise when they refused to meet his contract demands.

  24. Steven007 Says:

Gone Gator, Munch has grown up in one respect. Early on in his tenure trolling the comment section, whenever someone would disagree with him, he would encourage them to commit $uicide by one or more Ridiculous scenarios. I haven’t seen that as much lately, so, progress? Although it’s funny how he’s trying to backpedal given the baker stuff since he has demonstrably said far far more negative things and is only now gently eating Crow.

  25. Daniel Dream Says:

When Baker is on his game, there’s nothing he can’t do. In the past he sometimes had inconsistencies and inaccuracies due to inconsistent footwork and mistaken reads but that pretty much seems all in the past now. If Baker is QB the number one priority for the offense needs to be to keep Baker on his A-game. Like any player, if a defense gets him off his game he can struggle- but when he’s on his game, it’s always a W. Always if he has the chance we will win the game. So it’s kinda irrelevant his ‘weaknesses’- we execute correctly on offense, any inconsistencies he has dissappear when he’s on his game. Execute, keep him on his game. He has MVP ability. Just keep him healthy, keep him on his game, you can see the results.

  26. Davyboy Says:

Oh Munch you love to deny reality. You have said so much BS about our quarterback you either can’t remember what you said or you are just lying.
And by the way I thought you didn’t read the comments?? Man you are so predictable. 😂😂

  27. Davyboy Says:

Munch, do you really think calling me names hurts my little feelers? Do you really?? How old are you?

  28. Davyboy Says:

It is hilarious that you think I was talking about you when I never mentioned your name. I just said I can think of someone that did. Sounds like someone has a guilty conscience…🤔

  29. Davyboy Says:

It’s funny that Tom Brady said Baker can make any throw on the field.

  30. heyjude Says:

Wham, what an arm! Love seeing that Baker throw and Buka’s catch again.

  31. #99 the big fella Says:

If I’m not mistaken we were given the nickname Baker bois by you Rod?
    I could be wrong

  32. Bucsfan Says:

On an old ABC QB challenge show in the late 70s or early 80s I saw Dan Pastorini throw a ball 87 yards in the air, but could Doug Williams top that, I believe he could have in his heyday.

  33. Jeff and Jack's grandpa Says:

Rod Muncher is never wrong and knows everything

  34. Noseguard Says:

And Bart Scott always said Baker had a weak arm and couldn’t make all the throws. Id10t

  35. SlyPirate Says:

    That OL play was awesome!

Watch Barton. At the end he had no one to block so he zeroed in on a DL, ran up, hit him, and then chased him downfield.

  36. Mike Says:

That Gus Swayze has a cannon for an arm!
