Another QB Breakdown Of Baker Mayfield Greatness

October 13th, 2025

Last week, Joe shared how Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner spent several minutes explaining the greatness of Baker Mayfield.

Yesterday, after calling the Bucs-49ers game for CBS and after studying Mayfield for days leading up Sunday, retired Pro Bowl cornerback Tony Romo hopped on CBS Sports HQ to dissect what has made Mayfield play like a league MVP.

Joe think Romo summed it up beautifully.

“He’s in that sweet spot of his career where his footwork, his arm talent and his knowledge of the game all come together,” Romo said. “And his athleticism was shown again [against the 49ers]. He’s slippery, always gets out. But his instincts, he’s looking off [defenders] as well as anyone in the National Football League. And his arm talent, it’s way up there right now. He’s throwing balls that not many quarterbacks are throwing right, and he’s putting them right in that exact spot. I mean I couldn’t be more impressed with the way that Baker Mayfield is playing.”

Joe can’t add to that, other than Mayfield clearly inspires his teammates.

Any truth to the rumor that he injured his elbow or shoulder throwing that ball into the stands after the game was over? /s

Mayfield has literally been the worst quarterback in the NFL over the last two season according to QBR, which is the new gold standard of stat tracking. If you don’t believe the numbers, go watch his highlights from the last two years –

Munch and his continual over weighting of QBR as a measure. Baker like 9th or 10th in QBR this year. Guys like Caleb Williams may beat him out because over weighting running.

Munch feels like if he calls QBR enough as a gold standard people will believe him.

I remember three years ago hearing how Trask and Mayfieid were pretty much neck and neck in QB competition in camp and I thought “Mayfieid is what he is, start Trask!”. Year one under Mayfieid as the starter and I was quite pleased and thought “we may have found out Titans years Ryan Tannehill?” (meant in a good way). Fast forward to end of last year and this year and I’m thinking “we may have found our version of Saints years Drew Brees?!” (meant in a franchise linchpin, possible Super Bowl winning QB and future HoF’er?!?!). I was wrong at first but hopefully correct this time.

Romo played cornerback lmfao….need that morning cup of joe…Joe lol

  6. LVMYBUCS Says:

All those people who hated on our GM can go suck a fat one. He has done a good job getting good players on this team. I still don’t like Bowles style of coaching though

  7. LVMYBUCS Says:

Funny how Dean plays better when he knows he is about to be replace or let go

  8. heyjude Says:

I always liked Tony and he was a good QB for Dallas. Listening to him yesterday; he was so excited about the Bucs, Todd, and our entire team. He couldn’t say enough about Todd too.

  9. 813BUCBOI Says:

whats not to like about todds coaching style?…lol…

we’re 5-1 with injuries on both sides of the ball….

    we’ve kept 3 opponents at 20pts or less…..

    we’ve beat 2 1 loss teams….

his defense is producing sacks and turnovers without a sack monster or lockdown CB…

we’re physical & well coached on both sides of the ball…..

we arent being out coached or out schemed….

All those people who hated on our HC can go suck a fat one!!!!!!!

    5-1!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  10. Kenton Smith Says:

ToesOnTheLine. I’d like you to try something. Watch Baker’s best 5 career games- then watch Drew ( my coach is a cheater) Brees best 5 career games. Then tell me they should be mentioned in the same league as far as QB play. Brees had 20 years and one Super Bowl. 20 years to pad stats. Yes he is a hall of famer. But if you’ll trust your eyes you should see that Baker is a better player. In every sense of the word.

  11. Fred McNeil Says:

I’m not sure why Baker isn’t considered a good running quarterback. I might not be famous, but I’m not blind. It looks like he runs pretty darn well to me. Maybe I need new glasses? As far as pure arm talent…you should have seen him doing a passing competition in the pro bowl passing challenge game they had. Very accurate and a very strong arm were my takeaways. I wouldn’t ordinarily watch that droll, but I was in the hospital. It was that or the Hallmark channel

  12. Senor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

Baker is making some incredible throws. The thing to me that is most impressive is many are over the middle, where shorter QBs struggle to see the field. Hurts for example – that is his weakness

  13. Gipper Says:

    Geno711,

That is just one of hundreds of Munch attacks on Mayfield. People are allowed to be wrong and stupid. Don’t ever expect Munch to admit it. I have decided to call off the war on the Muncher. It isn’t even fun anymore. For whatever reasons, he has a following on these pages. No point in doing to him what he was trying to do to Baker. Muncher will lay in wait until a major Mayfield mistake and with glee tell us; “ I told you so.” That’s just the way it is.

  14. Rjscheapseats Says:

    Mayfield QBR: 2024 61.4, 25 70.6
    Brady 2020 66 2021 73

Brady in 2021 was second in QBR and put together what is almost certainly the greatest season in Bucs history. Mayfield’s numbers are better than Brady’s 2020 numbers, but not as good as 2021. But Mayfield is doing this with injuries all over the place.

  15. Durango 95 Says:

whats not to like about todds coaching style?
    ______

Couldn’t care less about his “style”. Style is something that appeals to Gruden fans. His lack of consistency and over reliance on the offense is an embarrassment since becoming HC. If he can overcome those things which I figure is a 50/50 proposition
then the team might have something going on. He claims to have had a eureka moment with his defense. I don’t know about that but at least the D appears to be headed in the right direction.

  16. Smarter than Joe Says:

    Baker is a WINNER

Baker is playing the best of his career

Todd, Jason and all the coaches need to thank him for saving their jobs

This secondary gets scorched week after week, pathetic!!! What does this defensive head coach/playcaller even do?

  17. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Gipper

I totally respect your post about Rod. I also love Geno’s “scorekeeping”.

Many of the trolls, not all, are just not informed and spew ignorant opinions.

Rod OTOH is knowledgeable. I respect that. I even laugh at his jokes about my posts from “The Old Folks” home and the accompanying insults.

What I do NOT respect is his inability to simply say I screwed the pooch on that one.

I like many here made a huge mistake in support JW as the top pick.. Hindsight is 20-20. I could use the excuse that all the FSU guys were ASSURING me that JW’s lack of character was just immaturity and not revelatory of genuine character flaws. So I went along with the “popular” opinion.

I along with most of the posters here were simply wrong. We were swayed by JW’s obvious talent and HOPEFUL he’d grow up. After that first season we realized it wasn’t immaturity it was a self centered..ME..ME..ME.

That’s only ONE of the areas I’ve been mistaken. There is nothing wrong with being WRONG. Nothing ventured nothing gained. If you’re going to put your opinion out there sometimes you’re simply going to be wrong.

Rod is right so frequently I’m just a bit puzzled why he had difficulty with those few times when he’s wrong. I always read and respect his stuff even when I disagree.

But thanks GENO for keeping us all honest.

    95

    go eat crow with aqua!!!!!!!

His lack of consistency?!!!!!….what are you talking about….

since becoming the HC of the BUCS Todd has consistently made the playoffs and won the division!!!!

we’ve played 6 games and we’ve held opponents to 20pts or under in 3 of those games and you talking about consistency!!!!!

    go count feathers!!!!

    5-1!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  19. Durango 95 Says:

Normally I would not be convinced by your arguments but since you used all the exclamation points.

    I’m on board!!!!!!!

  20. Becky Says:

I am not surprised at all what baker is capable of because I have been watching him do it since he walked on at Texas Tech. Anyone who has ever watched him play should have seen how talented he was. He has that “thing” that all great players have. I also remember a whole lot of people besides rod munch who said baker wasn’t even good enough to be in the NFL. And allot of those people still have jobs unfortunately. It is laughable to hear these people now talk about how he is finally coming into his own. No he was always this player he just didn’t have a team that believed in him or built around him. And as we see, rod had been pretty quiet.

  21. Marky mark Says:

We need to call out the Kyle bots and the vicious Midget posts by Rod Munch. These people, are not just consistent wrong but use derogatory and, defamatory language to be wrong with. I would ban them from this board Joe..

  22. Beeej Says:

Joe, you need to look up Skip Bayless on Twitter and post the incredible 15-minute testimony that he gave to Baker yesterday, absolutely incredible!

  23. orlbucfan Says:

@813: you and I were both posting 5-1 before it happened. How long have you been a (genuine) Bucs fan?

  24. simsini Says:

Baker is better than Brady, he’s that good.

c’mon now, im as big of a baker homer as anyone but that’s a bit much. brady is the goat.

i will agree that baker is better than 2022 brady but that’s about as far as i’d go until baker has some rings on his fingers.

    Munch is a moron ……!! May 5th, 2023 at 1:48 am

  28. Davyboy Says:

QBR is the gold standard about as much as Baker is a middling quarterback.
If it’s the gold standard then why doesn’t the NFL use it? I’ll tell you why, because no one but BSPN knows the formula. Who knows what all is in it? The NFL sure doesn’t. The passer rating is what the NFL uses now and most likely what they’ll use long into the future. They trust it. And they do not trust the QBR.

  29. Richierich Says:

Josh Allen is 8th in qbr Baker is 9th but qbr is for nerds. It doesn’t account for 14 yard runs on 3rd down or plays made in the clutch. Btw PFF was also considered the gold standard…… And Josh Allen and Baker are leaders for the MVP not because of the qbr rankings because they make their teams better and without them their teams would be horrible.

  30. JK Says:

Does the Throbbing Rod Muncher still embarrass himself for a living on this forum??

  31. BradyGronkFan Says:

Always believed in Mayfied as a top 15 to top 10 QB. But even that was wrong. This year he is playing at top 3. Guess what. Almost every SB winner at least since Tom Brady came to the league had a QB playing as top 5. Of course as you know there is the rare exception, such as a team winning with defense first such as Bucs 1st SB.

  32. BradyGronkFan Says:

As Brady and Mahomes would attest, when your QB is playing at their best, it’s a guarantee to at least conference finals. And no I don’t include Lamar Jackson in top 3 QB. His MVP seasons were marginally deserved, maybe one but 3! Ridiculous. He turtles going against tough defense or in shootouts with top Mahomes. Mayfield’s comebacks shows he’s got that it factor to win no matter what.

  33. Aqualung Says:

Durango, I had one for you but apparently it got thrown out of the game.
