Will Gholston Still Wants To Play

September 16th, 2025

Still hungry.

Bucs defensive tackle Calijah Kancey is sadly lost for the year with a pectoral injury and 12-year Bucs defensive tackle Will Gholston still wants to play.

Have the Bucs washed their hands completely of Gholston, as it seems they have of Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett?

Gholston made it clear he hasn’t retired during his visit to the No Off Days podcast this month. Gholston’s a busy dad living in Tampa with business interests and coaching football as an assistant at Sickles High School.

Joe knows Gholston does not peddle in nonsense and chest-beating. If he says he still wants to play, that means he’s kept in shape and is serious. At 34 years old, does Gholston have any quality snaps left in his body?

Joe assumes the Bucs thought Gholston’s taken was empty so they didn’t offer him a new contract for this season. The coming days should bring clarity to that unknown.

It’s often said how complex Todd Bowles’ defense is. If that’s so, then one would think the Bucs would be eager to call on Gholston in this kind of emergency situation if his body is up to it.

    We’ll see.

  2. mj Says:

    bring him back!

  3. buc4evr Says:

Bring him in on the practice squad and get him ready to play. Either that or find a way to sign Christian Wilkins. .

  4. Nick2 Says:

Please sign him he was still effective even at his age.

  5. Pewter Power Says:

No thank you will brings nothing to this team besides knowledge of the scheme. I know Licht sees what tripe of team we have go get somebody with a mid round draft pick not somebody old

  6. First Last Says:

Nick2, no please God no Christian Wilkins. He was literally touching people inappropriately. If anything bring back Gholston or add someone from the practice squad to active and then sign Desmond Watson

  7. First Last Says:

    I meant buc4ever, not Nick2

  8. Jeffrey D Says:

I think this year we need to go all in as LVD probably ain’t coming back and we don’t know what’s going to happens with Evans so I say trade for a bonafide DT. Jeffrey Simmons from Tennessee, Quinnen Williams from the Jets or Dexter Lawrence from the NY Giants….Or trade Diaby and a pick for a proven edge rusher (Trey Hendrickson). I like Diaby but all we hear is potential and no stats to back it up. 0 sacks in 2 games.

Let’s hope I can post an inoffensive comment without the tech gremlin catching me. Licht and Bowles will decide, and I trust them. Besides, Big Will has a much-deserved SB ring, relatively healthy body, and is set financially. He knows how violent this sport is better than we do.

  10. ModHairKen Says:

Yes. Please bring him back. Love Gholston.

    _______

So you’re not a fan of Warren Sapp?

  12. Jeremy121182 Says:

kick the tires at the very least

  13. Tim Says:

Christian Wilkins has been touching inappropriately since at least college. I remember seeing him checking some guys oil in a pile during a game. I don’t know where that lines up with Licht’s personnel standards.

  14. Saskbucs Says:

With Burrow down, I like the idea of swinging for Hendrickson now more than ever. Yeah he doesn’t replace Kancey position wise but so far Diaby and Reddick aren’t getting it done. Another body for the DL that can actually get to the QB sounds good to me.

Another week or 2 and I’d spend a 4th on Trey as a rental.

  15. buc4evr Says:

Yeah I stand corrected, didn’t remember that he had some of those types of issues. Wilkins wouldn’t be a very good idea.lol. So bring back Gholston asap!

  16. Durango 95 Says:

Gholston is a first class guy and has always been a high effort quality player. If they are serious about making a legit run at a SB then they have to bring in someone that can impact the defense. Gholston is not that guy anymore. Also, if they are serious about making a run. They also need to bring in a quality swing tackle. At this time of the year that’s not easy .

    Too bad on Kancey.

  17. Marine Buc Says:

Maybe Warren Sapp has a few snaps left as well…

    LOL!

This sucks. Kancey has been snake bit by injuries since day one.

Roberts will need to step up. He looked OK against Houston and in preseason.

The other option is to add the big NT from the practice squad and have Vea play some at DT.

Either way it’s next man up!

  18. UGotRobbed Says:

How much is Desmond Watson down!? 😉

  19. First Last Says:

DoooshLaRue, I was a Brady bandwagoner turned Baker bandwagoner so I don’t know anything about Warren Sapp touching people

  20. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Tim

Wilkins was just checking to see if he was “ that man”🙂

  21. Jmarkbuc Says:

Not sure Cindy would trade Trey now.. that ship has sailed.

  22. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

Gholston looked out of shape with man boobs last year in a postgame video when he had his shirt off.

Looked to me like a guy who was washed up…

Elijah Roberts looked pretty good, move him up to 1st string and let’s go

  23. Rod Munch Says:

Would be a good pickup for a veteran spot on the practice squad – that would let the team give him a little time to get into football shape while they can see if he still has anything left. I’d certainly do it over picking up some random scrub that doesn’t know the defense.

  24. Bucs4Ever Says:

He’s a great lockerroom guy and works hard.

Probably deserves a workout at minimum

  25. BucYou Says:

No issues with giving him a workout. He’s another veteran presence that’s been to the top and knows what it takes to win. If he has any gas left in the tank, I’d certainly prefer to see him on the field than a practice squad call up.

  26. MadMax Says:

why not? If hes willing, give him a few weeks then put him out there….he knows todd’s D.

But go after RT Pipkins….we need that guy Jason.

  27. Capt.Tim Says:

Some of you may remember, When we drafted Kancey- I pointed out that he is too small to play DT in the NFL.
    He is 5’11”, 280 pounds.
I said he would be hurt all the time, and Would unfortunately develop Chronic injuries.

Thats exactly whats happened. Of course it did. Hes too small.
    Kancey.Logan Hall. JTS.
Thats alot of wasted high round picks- without ending up with one serviceable Defensive lineman.

We need to hire a consultant, on building s Defensive line.
Because our Defensive line is weak!

  28. Biggun Says:

    Bring Big Will back!!!!!

  29. EEK Says:

    give them both tryouts
Kancey was poised to break through

  30. MadMax Says:

Hubbard is the only available RT right now…but a trade for Pimpkins could work….get both Jason. We need to fix the O line.

  31. BucsFan81 Says:

You want to bring someone back bring back SUH pretty sure he has snaps left and is always working out and training with other NFL Players

  32. Jacob Says:

    Sign Aaron Donald

  33. Kenton Smith Says:

Capt. Tim. After watching the Bucs defense stuff, and I mean STUFF, 2 solid running games in a row and you call our defensive line “weak”? Maybe you could rethink that one?

  34. Kenton Smith Says:

Now I would agree with DR that we need a couple more beasts in the middle. And I’d agree with Joe that it’s frustrating not to have another freak edge rusher or 2, it’s not quite accurate to call us weak. Gaines didn’t look weak yesterday. An idea I have for shoring up the defensive line is send Tykee on a blitz every drop back. All I could think when he ran through that running back on the way to his sack yesterday was I’d hate to be that dude in the film room with his teammates tomorrow.

  35. Kenton Smith Says:

Those sacks yesterday were giant plays and changed the game more than alot of arm punts(interceptions) would have.

  36. teacherman Says:

I also think JPP can be a DT and DE.

    Not an OLB.

But JPP can play DE and DT
