Tristan Wirfs Discusses Getting Back On The Field

September 11th, 2025

Talks return.

So today Bucs coach Todd Bowles made a lot of Bucs fans’ day when he did not rule out the return of both Chris Godwin and Tristan Wirfs.

But Bowles was clear it is not a sure thing both Godwin and Wirfs will play Monday night in Houston.

“They were limited in practice but they flew around and did things we asked them to do,” Bowles said. “We will see how the week progresses.

“They are just back to getting their feet back beneath them. They looked good today. …

“But we will have to see how the week goes. We will see how the recovery goes.”

When Bowles was asked point-blank if the two could be ready to play Monday night, Bowles said it is not out of the question.

“Possibly,” Bowles said. “They have a lot of tests to pass.”

Joe got a chance to speak with Wirfs in the locker room. He appeared in fantastic spirits. But even Wirfs said he couldn’t begin to guess when he can next play.

“I don’t know of a percentage,” Wirfs said of his chances of playing Monday night. “I honestly couldn’t tell you.

“We have another work day this week and we will see how I recover from today. Once I get a feel for [Thursday’s recovery], we’ll go from there.

“A percentage, it would be hard [to guess]. I couldn’t even tell you. I couldn’t guess.”

Once Wirfs is able to play in a game, that’s a big, big step. So Joe asked him how many weeks it would take to get back to being the normal Tristan Wirfs and playing at optimum production, like his normal All-Pro level.

“Hopefully, not too long,” Wirfs said. “The biggest thing, and I was talking with [Bucs offensive line coach Kevin Carberry] about this, is seeing things full-speed.”

So what Wirfs wants to do is have extra work with a defensive player to mimic a pass rush at game speed, which Wirfs termed “live rush, to help him shake the rust off.

  1. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

There’s a video floating around of Wirfs hitting the sled in practice today. With his injury in mind, he looked pretty good as far as his movement.

  2. White Tiger Says:

Oh man, this is great news, even if those two aren’t on the field this week, we know they’re getting close!

  3. jcscycles Says:

Maybe for the Jets game-Eagles for sure. Another question is do they kick Barton back to center or stick him at left guard?

  4. StickinUp4Centers Says:

Well, his ultimate test would have been his practice nemesis Jose Ramirez, but he gone.

  5. heyjude Says:

The possibility of sooner is great.

  6. Stpetematt Says:

Barton will obviously go back to center. Remember they rushed for 1200 yards plus last year with that setup?

    Any other idea is nuts.

  7. Hodad Says:

Why would he move to guard?

  8. Anyhony Says:

Please, just not Hall! (beat ya to it Aquabrain)

  9. orlbucfan Says:

Agree 100% with White Tiger. Getting slowly excited about the eventual WR Trio of Terror hitting the field with Bake.

  10. Just Visiting Says:

So long as the percentage isn’t zero, it’s good news.

The mystery around bkth injuries is just odd. Maybe I can play maybe I can’t maybe cris can play maybe he can’t maybe maybe maybe it’s another month who knows? Dude YOU know. I get it..if we knew and you told US the opponent knows but this is getting stupid.

    D inYB

The Bucs must’ve hired a new disinformation minister. They seem to be really into playing games this year.

  15. Jmarkbuc Says:

Would have liked to have seen some press availability from Chris today, though..🤔

  16. Aqualung Says:

Just limit CJ Stroid to 400 yards passing and 30 points and we have a chance.

  17. garro Says:

LOL…Gotta be frustrating at times Joe.

So same thing dfferent day. Keep working guys!

    Go Bucs!

  18. Vanessa Anne Says:

    One day at a time…

We all want Tristan back on the field as soon as possible. But, I’d much rather go slow and make sure he’s 100%, than take a chance on re-injuring his knee, or another injury because he came back too soon.

    Same with Chris.

  19. jcscycles Says:

Center and Guard are similar postions in terms of technique and player measurements. Barton’s arm length is less than ideal for tackle, which is one reason why he was not considered for tacklenin the NFL

But that being said, neither was Goedecke, which is why he was inserted as a lwft guard his first year. That didn’t work, but when he went back to tackle, he was terrific.
