Todd Bowles: Jamel Dean Is Our Starter; Benjamin Morrison Is Not
September 17th, 2025Fans wanting Jamel Dean kicked to the curb must wait at least another week, and maybe a lot longer.
The Super Bowl-winning Bucs starting cornerback is indeed the team’s starter at outside corner.
Yeah, rookie Benjamin Morrison made his Bucs debut Monday night and took some of Dean’s snaps, but that was a just a coach getting a rookie a few looks and experience. Bowles made that very clear on the Buccaneers Radio Network.
“Dean starts for us and we wanted to get Morrison some reps to get his feet wet because you never know what we, what’s gonna happen during the year,” Bowles said.
“We’re trying to get him caught up and get his feet wet and get him some reps as well, not just special teams. And he went in there, he had some good plays and he had some things he saw for the first time. But the more you get him in there, the more his confidence goes up because we never know when we might need him.”
Smart move getting Morrison reps. Dean playing a full season is as likely as Joe ordering a Kale salad and a fruit cup at Hooters.

Dean will lose his job. Morrison is better.

The last paragraph is exactly the point. Morrison wasn’t gonna roll in here and win a starting job over a solid CB, especially with the injuries he had in preseason. But it’s only a matter of time before an injury occurs.

Actually we DO know what’s gonna happen during the year

Todd knows what he is doing. Both Morrison and Parrish are scary good DB rookies. We’re turning into the walking wounded again. Something ain’t right in the usual cosmic pattern.

Morrison played like a donkey. He hasn’t practiced. He had a penalty. Let him get his feet wet on the practice field.

Parrish does look great, but I haven’t seen anything from Morrison to make me believe he’ll blossom early into a solid starter. Dean is the starter for a reason, and you can’t even say it’s because of his paycheck anymore.

Give Morrison a little time and experience. I have faith in the kid.

I’ve always liked Dean. I feel better when he is in the lineup. But Morrison needs to be ready because he will get hurt at some point.
