Kameron Johnson Wins NFC Special Teams Player Of The Week

September 10th, 2025

Rewarded.

This hasn’t happened in Tampa since Love Smith patrolled the sidelines and told fans an opposing team’s completion percentage is irrelevant.

Today, Bucs receiver/returner Kameron Johnson was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week. Stunning.

Joe tips a cap to Todd Bowles, who saw something in Johnson that most fans thought was brewing inside rookie Tez Johnson (no relation).

Second-year man Kameron Johnson made the roster somewhat surprisingly and was named the No. 1 punt returner. His 54-yard return in Atlanta on Sunday was by far the best punt return in the NFL in Week 1, and he downed a punt inside the 20 yard line on coverage teams.

The last time a Bucs non-kicker was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week was October of 2015, versatile running back/returner Bobby Rainey.

Last year, the Bucs’ longest punt return was 17 yards, courtesy of Trey Palmer.

  2. St.Pete Salty Buc Says:

Good deal. He had the dropsies in pre season,so I figured he was done. Glad he’s showing out on special teams. Tex is our gadget guy and can do some good things also. GO BUCS.

  3. FlBoy84 Says:

May want to give a hat tip instead to the scouts & FO that saw enough in him to get him in the building in the first place.

  4. Stpetematt Says:

Nice! Egbuka up for a couple awards too. Rookie of the week, etc. let’s hope he gets it!

  5. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Well deserved! We get Kam to stay healthy, every return opportunity he gets will be a solid chance to return one for a score

  6. DrunkInYbor Says:

I wanted him gone but I wasn’t thinking clearly. He had those bad drops but his importance is special teams duh.

  7. orlbucfan Says:

Yeah, mon, you go Big K!!! Well, they kept both Johnsons for a reason. Our new punter is pretty good, too. I’m glad Licht and Bowles emphasized Special Teams in the off-season. Punt returner has got to be one of the most hazardous positions to play in the NFL, hands down.

  8. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Guessing Trey’s 17th yard was him stepping out of bounds.

  9. Buc1987 Says:

Now all they need is a new kicker!

  10. dbbuc711 Says:

I knew it was unlikely for defense for just 1 play but I thought AWJ deserved defensive player pf the week.

  11. Stpetematt Says:

    Let’s hope that was a fluke, ‘87…

  12. First Last Says:

Hopefully we see a 40-0 lead in the Texans game so we can get this guy and Tez some touches on the ball.

He had a great game! More games like that one are coming soon! He’s young and talented a couple more good plays and his confidence will skyrocket!!

  14. firethecannons Says:

wow great, hope he can repeat against Texans happy for him

  15. Larrd Says:

The new punter may have come in second.

  16. Irishmist Says:

Koo would have gotten my vote, but OK.

  17. Aqualung Says:

Aqualung has now seen via performance on the field why Kameron Johnson is doing what he does, and little Tez “drop the pass” Johnson will be doing something else when JMac is reactivated.

  18. Joseph C Simmons Says:

When Godwin and JMac come back they’re going to have a big decision to make with the roster between Shepard, Johnson (Tez) and Johnson (Kam).

  19. garro Says:

Wow! Good for you Kam! Congrats sir!

Gotta admit I thought they screwed up putting him back there and all but benching Tez, but I was dead wrong. Hats off to McGaughey as well! Your teams look way better this year sir.

    Go Bucs!
