Edgeless Sacks Party For Tampa Bay

September 15th, 2025

First-career sack!

Joe loves sacks.

They’re drive killers. They get in quarterbacks heads. They jack up a defense and change games.

Sacks get Joe so fired up because they matter so much.

Edge rush? The Bucs have a weak edge rush. It’s just how it is. Overall, the 2025 outside linebackers unit isn’t special. Joe still has high hopes for Haason Reddick, but he has much to prove after two games.

Getting sacks without an edge rush, however, Todd Bowles is good at that. Every year the Bucs are among the sacks leaders, always in the top-10.

Tonight against the Texans, the Bucs got a sack from safety Tykee Smith, the first of his career. Smith bull rushed former Bucs running back Dare Ogunbowale.

Lavonte David disguised a blitz beautifully and shared a sack with Bucs rookie defensive tackle Elijah Roberts. A thing of beauty.

Defensive tackle Greg Gaines? He got a sack the old fashioned way. He beat his man and took down Texans QB C.J. Stroud for a critical eight-yard sacks late in the first half that pushed the Texans’ back to the Tampa Bay 48 yard line.

Those were the Bucs’ three sacks, things of beauty after just one last week.

  3. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Glad we won so we can laugh about LVD’s dropped INT

  4. SlyPirate Says:

    Two Thoughts:
Yaya, Braz, Reddick … DROP THRM ALL INTO COVERAGE
Rush Smith and LVD. They’re the best on the team.

The DL played better without Kancey. He’s likely done the year.

  5. NashvilleBuc Says:

    And McLaughlin’s missed field goal.

  6. Stuck Says:

Micah parsons would’ve been great in a Bucs uniform.

  7. Inwoodjeremy Says:

I get to experience a victory Tuesday in a couple hours!

  8. Sal Says:

Bucs don’t have any pass rushers period #!!

  9. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Both the O and the D will be fine when and if they get healthy. But what has happened to o e of the best piece in the biz A LOT of close games in the NFL kickers are CRITICAL!

  10. geno711 Says:

No complaints from me about a defense that only allowed 12 first downs and had a goal line stand tonight.

That was a very stout effort.

Really, I would complain about no one on defense other than SirVocea Dennis and his 180 yards of YAC given up in just two games this year.

  11. It’s Exciting!!!! Says:

    Just win Baby!!!!!

    2-0 with backups.

    LFG!!!!!

  12. JA Says:

At least Chase is hitting the crossbar. When kickers go really bad they don’t come close. He’s been big for us in the past. Still too early to give up on him.

  13. Hodad Says:

Bucs will need to draft a DT early, and often next draft. Get a MLB too, Dennis stinks.

  14. Mveal2006 Says:

Roberts and gaines really looked good.

Special teams affect defense, and the bucs defense looked great to me.

I didnt see much with reddick

  15. JReel Buc Says:

Dennis has to go! Kancey project is over frame too small Yaya isn’t the answer or the future. Bowles blits packages was the difference

  16. Red Skeleton Says:

Ya ya was held all night.

  17. Rastaferian Jenkins Says:

Pressure can come from a lot of places, you just need to be unpredictable. Or defense played amazing tonight, very proud of the collective effort. Losing Kancey is huge. He’s a unique guy that you can’t scheme for. Terrible that he’s so injury prone because he’s special when he’s in. Not sure how you replace that for a full season. We really should look at trading for a DT with pass rush skills

  18. Canabuc Says:

And teams with good defenses get better. Sadarius Smith was available out there but of course the Eagles just signed him last week

  19. D-Mac Says:

Now that the game has concluded, the Bucs need to trade for Rankins from the Texans. Maybe they’ll take a 4th or 5th for him at his age

  20. unbelievable Says:

1 game is a fluke. 2 games is a pattern. We have a kicker problem.

  21. Hearty Dikerson Says:

The defense looked better without Kancey. This fairytale they envisioned of a yin-yang ‘big strong guy and little quick guy’ DT duo isn’t working.

Kancey is too one-dimensional and his weaknesses are too easy to scheme around. Keep playing Elijah in that spot. Try KC ask an edge rusher in the mold of Dwight Freeney

  22. BuccinBaker6, Says:

Reddick Forced CJ To step up into the sack of David an Roberts Reddick is getting pressure he has 1 sack we need Yaya to get his

  23. Saskbucs Says:

Ugh. Terrible 4 man rush again so far this year.

Maybe I was wrong about Kancey as well. I saw him in the backfield so fast at times I thought he was on the cusp of super stardom. Another injury, potentially season ending, after not doing much for 6 quarters… not good.

  24. Smarter than Joe Says:

How good will this team be if they are healthy?

We will never know because, they are either cursed or have the worst trainers in the league
