Davante Adams Says Baker Mayfield Reminds Him Of Tom Brady

September 16th, 2025

Rams receiver Davante Adams will be alongside his 2014 draft classmate Mike Evans in the Pro Football Hall of Fame one day.

Don’t bother questioning it. Adams is a three-time All-Pro who recently passed Michael Irvin, Don Maynard, Calvin Johnson and Antonio Gates on the career receiving yards list. Those guys are all Hall of Famers. And Adams is healthy and happy in his new football home that places him with another stud quarterback and a coach that will get him the rock.

Adams is a regular with Kay Adams (no relation) on her Up & Adams on FanDuel TV. There today, Davante Adams was asked about Baker Mayfield’s performance last night and what he’s delivering to the Bucs.

He likes what he sees and actualy evoked The Goat, Tom Brady.

“I’m a big Baker fan, man, and he earned a lot respect,” Adams said. “And I don’t want to get carried away as far as the whole picture, but just the attitude popping up talking some mess to [defensive players]. That kind of looked like Tom [Brady] a little bit right there [last night to Texans safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson,] which obviously I love.

“I love to see a quarterback fired up like that, not afraid to go meet the defense and talk a little mess right in their face like that.”

Davante Adams went on to say Mayfield “won me over” in 2022.

In that season, Adams was with the Raiders on the wrong end of Mayfield getting picked up by the Rams and starting against Las Vegas three days later. Mayfield led a game-winning drive to beat Vegas and, interestingly, Adams said he’s heard a lot about Mayfield’s work ethic leading up to that game from inside the Rams’ organization.

“I think Baker’s a dawg,” Adams said, adding Mayfield is a guy you want on your team.

Joe sure hopes Mayfield takes pity on the Bucs when it comes time to sign a new conract.

I don’t think so — Brady would have been sacked 12 times in that Houston game.

  2. Knothead71 Says:

I don’t see any Brady in Mayfield. But Baker does remind me of Brett Favre quit a bit.

Why do people have to take good vibes, then push them so far there can only be a negative response? Baker played great considering the very bad offensive line play – and he has stepped up big the last two weeks. It bodes really well for when the offensive line is finally healthy – not to mention getting back Godwin and McMillan. Very happy with Baker so far this year, keep it up, and go earn that huge new extension.

  4. MelvinJunior Says:

I think Baker is a definite TOP-5 QB in the league, right now! The list of course, is fluid, but factoring in durability and availability, & etc. HE IS THERE, 💯. No doubt about it. Amazing.

  5. First Last Says:

Rod Munch, that is the most positive thing I have ever read from you regarding Baker Mayfield. Boy have times changed since 2023.

As for Joe comments on Baker’s contract. I sure hope he takes a deal, and I bet Licht could get him to do it too assuming he keeps the team competitive. I don’t blame Dak, Burrow, Tua, Lawrence for taking those large contracts. I mean think about it, your team sucks and you just want to secure the bag cause there is nothing else really to do.

I think Baker wants to win so he may take a discount. But I could still see it being in the 40-50m range. I would say I’ll take a discount but you have to sign Evans one more time, assuming he wants to play. But that is just me.

  6. Truth be Told Says:

It’s called being a Leader and a Great one at that. WE are lucky to have ‘Born Again’ Baker. Go Bucs!!

  7. Durango 95 Says:

Baker Mayfield is a lot more entertaining football player than Tom Brady. Rod Munch is now a Baker Boi fan club member. He took the long way around the mountain but he finally made it. Kind of like Baker Mayfield’s career.

  8. Davyboy Says:

Look out!!! Here come the comparisons!!!😂😂😂

  9. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Baker is willing the team to victory; he reminds me more of Steve Young during the ’93-94 seasons when he was trying to get the monkey off his back of being in Montana’s shadow. The GOAT had set the bar so high, but Young was determined to prove himself. Sure, he wasn’t as gifted naturally, but whether it was his mobility or his arm strength, he willed that team to a Lombardi in ’94. That’s the same energy I see in Baker right now.

    Lets not confuse our animals.

With all due respect Brady is the GOAT!

Baker is the DAWG! Brady could sometimes talk smack but he never backed it up with physical play. In fact by the time he got to Tampa he was Tommy Turtle to draw another animal metaphor.

This is not to disrespect Tommy Boy. He IS THE GOAT! But there plenty of QB’s playing right now who are far more physical. Brady just had that arm, the brain and quick decision making skills and the same obsessive will to win that Baker has. He just got it done differently.

Brady 6-4″ 225 Baker 6-1″ 215 Which one would you rather try and bring down in the open field? Does size matter? LOL

You weren’t paying close attention to Brady on the field with the Bucs. He’d talk to, stare, yell or get in the face of anyone he’s competing with. He even tried to high-five the ref after a TD in the playoffs.

Not a lot of QB’s function like that, but Brady and Mayfield do.

  13. KABucs Says:

Brady = intelligent, prepared, accurate, fiery, tough enough to play forever, talks crap, sometimes whiney

Mayfield = intelligent, prepared, usually accurate, fiery, tough enough to take some hits, talks crap + he’ll stiff arm defensive ends + he’ll block for his running backs + scampers like a squirrel (or is Tez the squirrel?… Or a Tasmanian Devil? Or a Tasmanian squirrel? Very confusing)

  14. Rod Munch Says:

If you want some fun angry radio out of Houston, check out the Payne & Pandergast podcast. A lot is whining about the Texans, but they also give the Bucs a lot of props for winning the game. I still have to find the post-game broadcast there, nothing is more fun to me than listening to opposing teams fans cry after a loss.

  15. GoneGator Says:

He was simply talking about talking smack to the defense…. Brady would do it. Baker does it.

The difference is Baker will fight a MF 🤣

Play style wise he’s definitely closer to Farve imo

  16. Rod Munch Says:

Brady = 7 Super Bowls wins
Baker = 0 Super Bowls wins

I swear people that make these comparisons just want to trigger negative reactions.

Baker has played great this year when it mattered, and he’s doing so with some very bad offensive line play. But don’t even for a second talk about comparisons with Brady until he’s got maybe 5 Super Bowl wins – then get back to me. And believe me, if he does, and it’s with the Bucs, I’ll be more than willing to listen and back you up.

  17. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Rod

I take your point but I think he was talking “style” not success. Again nobody disrepects Tommy’s GOAT status.

I’ll confess I was never a Brady or Belichik fan due mainly to their personalities.
Belichik was a great DC but IMHO an overrated HC as he NEVER won despite many opportunities as an HC without Brady as his QB. Add his seasons without Brady at Cleveland and NE and he’s a LOSING HC. Perhaps an HOF DC.

  18. Colonel Angus Says:

Hopefully he pulls a Brady and takes less money, so as to keep the team stocked with weapons.

  19. Davyboy Says:

The comparisons will continue because some people can see, admit and know that what team you go to out of college and what quality of coaching you get has EVERYTHING to do with how good you become. Some can’t see anything that actually requires you to use your critical thinking skills because some people have no critical thinking skills and those are easily spotted. They only have jealousy skills. Especially when you have had to endure 10 OC’s in 8 years. All things considered at this point it is getting very close to any comparison isn’t too far out of the realm of reality with one exception. After this year those that do have those skills will know where Baker falls and 2 games into 2025 it is looking really good. Personally, comparing him to Brady seems too much but that goes for anybody. Brady is in another orbit all by himself. I don’t think that person is born yet that can seriously be considered a Tom
    Brady comparison.

    ===========

You’d like to think that, but reading comments over the last couple of years here, that’s not always true.

As for style, they really don’t play a similar style at all. Brady was a master at quickly dissecting the defense, and making incredibly accurate throws all over the field. You always thought you had a chance to win the game if the ball was in his hands (unless you’d Todd Bowles and you take the ball out of his hands).

Baker, meanwhile, is fantastic at keeping plays alive, and with some really bad offensive line play right now – Baker’s ability to move, extend plays and run if needed is incredibly important.

But no one should be comparing anyone to Brady. It wasn’t just winning Super Bowls, it was also being the best, and at his worst one of the best, QBs in the NFL for literally decades. Really the only conversation of current players would be Mahomes, but he’s not even in the ballpark of Brady and lost head-to-head to Brady in the Super Bowl.

Brady is in his own tier and really shouldn’t be brought up as a comparison point for anyone as it’s an impossibly high bar and is only going to generate negative responses.

  21. Buddha Says:

Oh yes, Baker has that look in his eyes! Even Tom Brady couldn’t do it when he wasn’t surrounded by sufficient talent. Only thing that can defeat the Buccaneers this year is injuries to key players. The Buccaneers have one more tiny test before the murderers row of the Eagles, the Seahawks, the 49ers, and the Lions in a row.

  22. Kenton Smith Says:

It’s good to see Mayfield getting seen the way I’ve always seen him. But Tom Brady. Maybe I’ve always liked his game better than Brady’s but there is really only one comparison. They both could sling that rock and weren’t afraid to do just that! Brady set a standard and Rod is right. Give Baker 5 championships and maybe we’ll talk more about that idiocy. I’m just wondering if we can score 24 points against the Jets (would be our best performance of the season) and somehow hold them to 23. And I’ll bet Baker is wondering the same thing. It’s a really hard game without your starting tackles and center and I’ll breathe a little easier when our offensive line gets back to being our offensive line. Credit their fight yesterday but it’s like with our defensive backfield last year. 1st stringers are better than 2nd stringers.

  23. Kenton Smith Says:

Rod, I watched some Houston defenders being interviewed yesterday in the locker room after the game and it was hilarious. They were all worn out and frustrated as they could be. It was a real crack-up!!

  24. stvcl Says:

I’m glad the Bucs got Brady for the time they had him but dang, Baker Mayfield coming to Tampa and showing out after being absolutely dissed by the Browns, makes a man proud to be a Bucs fan. Thanks Jason for bringing him in on a prove it contract. Hope he retires as a Buc.

    ==================================
Brady would never put himself in a position with an inferior line. The reason Brady was so successful is he insisted on a competent Oline. He had all day to throw. The parallels today are Patrick Mahomes who was All World until he wasn’t. The difference—Mahomes today isn’t getting good protection. Baker never has had good protection on any team in NFL, he just makes it work.

  26. Davyboy Says:

Baker is EXACTLY what a few of us have been saying he was all along. He HASNT magically gotten better, not really. He is who he has always been. He is just finally at a place that believes in him and knows how to use his skills and talents for the benefit of the team. He has always been “that guy” or “HIM” as the boys on CBS SPORTS called him today. They can see what he has and how it could be used to help this team. Those that can’t see it are falling to the wayside and will soon be forgotten in the dust bins of history and the Baking Show will keep on Bakin and breaking records and getting OC’s HC jobs. Once we are healthy we will win a glorious superbowl with Baker as our franchise quarterback and when it’s all said and done there will be no question about Baker Mayfields ability as an ELITE NFL quarterback just as there was no question about him as the #1 college quarterback in the 21st century but man is it going to be hard on these old hearts.
