Cody Mauch Needs Surgery, 2025 Season Likely Done

September 17th, 2025

2025 season likely done.

The Bucs may have won the battle in Houston, but they lost the war.

Per Greg Auman of FOX Sports, right guard Cody Mauch’s knee injury will require surgery. That is expected to sideline Mauch for the rest of the 2025 season.

The Steers truly beat up the Bucs on Monday night. Gone is one of the better guards in the game. Also gone is one of the most promising up-and-coming defensive tackles in the game, Calijah Kancey.

Right tackle Luke Goedeke will be lost for a couple of weeks. And quarterback Baker Mayfield also got beat up Monday night.

The Bucs are a M*A*S*H unit right now. Injuries all over the place. Even receiver Emeka Egbuka has a groin injury and inside linebacker SirVocea Dennis has a bum foot.

This has rapidly turned serious.

  1. OR Buc Says:

    Damn

  2. BUC4L Says:

Season over. Was my biggest fear for this season. Injury bug has just about decapitated us. Hopefully the bleeding stops for the rest of the season.

  3. Diesel Says:

Yea we hurting right now. That’s why it’s so important to get the right 53 and PS together. Oline might be a bit out of whack until 78 & 67 can get back. Good thing is that hopefully we start getting healthier and are firing on as many cylinders as possible come weeks 6-9. Go Bucs

  4. TB_MikeB Says:

Going 3-0 means you only have to go .500 the rest of the way to hit 10 wins. Many of our injured guys ARE coming back. Only 2 guys are out for the year with a strong cavalry of Wirfs, Godwin, and Goedeke coming back soon. Weather the storm. Weather the storm and make it to the cushy back end of the schedule. Go Bucs. Big game coming up

  5. Canabuc Says:

We signed Dan Feeney so we got more guard depth. Veteran with 55 games. Where is Opeta?
Feel we can handleising a guard more than Goedeke. Hope he is only out a game or 2.

  6. Kstoges Says:

    Kill me please:(

  7. Saskbucs Says:

    That’s right TB_Mike.

Might have to be an ugly one this week. This obviously hurts but if we can be 3-1 heading to Seattle with Wirfs and Goedeke back healthy… the OL will be fine.

Any more major injuries and we have serious problems. Not a great start to the season despite 2-0.

  8. Chuckys Bucs Says:

I’d rather be 0-2 and healthy. If the goal was Super Bowl it’s a lost season already.

  9. BucsFan81 Says:

Yep I agree season is done. Was fun while it lasted. Not surviving with 3 backup linemen. Maybe with Wirfs back and Luke back it won’t be so bad if they can stay healthy but we might not see those guys for a couple more weeks.

  10. Joe Says:

    Where is Opeta?

What is it people have with this guy? People act like he’s John Hannah or something.

For two years people have been heavy panting for this guy. “Opeta… Opeta… Opeta… Opeta.” If the guy is available in the middle of September, that just tells Joe he’s crap.

  11. firethecannons Says:

ughhh kinda did not see this coming, he played every snap–what is wrong with the knee?

  12. Hearty Dikerson Says:

Best case scenario, we throw Chukwuma out there at T and he’s a natural. I’d try Heck at G. He’s an awful T but he’s pretty good at run blocking and they can possibly mitigate his weakness as a pass blocker playing in a phone booth.

Why is Klein on the 53 roster if we’re trusting guys off the street over him?

  13. Will Says:

We’re wearing the Creamsicle this weekend as well. I hate those things. I believe we haven’t won in them since 2009. The injuries started early this year hopefully we’ll get healthy later and make a run.

  14. BucsNbeer Says:

The sky is falling, the sky is falling. The season is not over. Eventually they will find five guys that will mesh and even though not perfect it will be doable with Baker as our QB. Now, if Baker can stay healthy is a different story.

  15. Colin in Canada Says:

Shocked to see this considering he had the key block on Whites game winner.

  16. Rastaferian Jenkins Says:

Klein is the next man up. He’s a natural RG who can fill in decently for Mauch. Gonna have to rely on the run game and play some old school Buc ball defense. This might be a 20-14 kinda game, Bucs win it by the thinnest

  17. JA Says:

They’ll be decent guys available via trade when teams are eliminated from the playoffs, or see the writing on the wall.
Problem is … that is several weeks away.
For now, it’s either signing streetwalkers or snatching up someone from a practice squad. Problem is … if those guys were any good they’d be on a 53 somewhere and unavailable.
It’s hard to find a team so deep in O-linemen they’re willing to let one go. Watch the Dolphins tomorrow night. If Buffalo crushes them, there’s talk ownership might fire the coach and blow up the team.
With luck … maybe a chance to grab a starter or decent backup?

  18. Falconrap Says:

Turf monster in action. I still think artificial turf needs to be eliminated. But I also wonder about the ability of our training staff to get our guys in the right shape, which means making their limbs very limber through lots of stretching so that they can be bent and twisted during games without tearing stuff. We just keep getting bit by injuries which tells you something.

  19. ek Says:

Put a call in to Cleveland for Wyatt Teller.

He’s in the last year of his deal, would only be paid around $2m (Browns have carried loads of money in void years) – and he’s a really good RG. They can probably afford to lose him and need to get cheaper, having signed Teven Jenkins this year and drafted Zak Zinter last year.

  20. Danfan Says:

I don’t like to be fatalistic but we’re done as contenders with these serious injuries. Getting Rams 2022 vibes, seen as a good contender, but devasted by injuries

  21. Josh Says:

You’re all being too negative — the season isn’t over, even if we lose a few games in the coming weeks. Once Goedeke and Wirfs are back, we could be sitting at 2-2 or 2-3, which is still manageable. I think 3-1 though with the Jets and Philly.

Honestly, I think Klein can hold up against the Jets just fine. Maybe I’m being optimistic, but I just have a feeling he’s going to step up and prove he belongs in this league.

So we’re 3-1 after Philly without Wirfs, Goedeke, Godwin, or McMillan. Move Barton back to center and Bredeson back at guard, and the two tackles back where they belong, I think we could be pleasantly surprised by Klein’s performance — especially at that point.

I’m more worried about the pass rush (or lack thereof) through two games. Houston has ZERO offensive lineman. Im positive Klien would already start there lol. Seriously though pretty sure he would.

  22. Aqualung Says:

    Creamsicle?

Bet all the farms on the Jets to cover, to win outright. Their defense is legit. They can rush the passer and cover.

The only Creamsicle win was in 2009, Josh Failman’s debut against the Packers. Those atrocities are an insult to Bucs fans because they stand for losing and that’s all the team ever does in them. Every game since their debut has been a loss. Anyone thinking we’re going to win this game now is taking some meds that I’d love to be on.

  23. BuccinBaker6, Says:

I think Bowles should have played guys in the preseason a little they were beat up week 1 an 2 badly but the bucs will weather the storm until Wirfs an Luke are back an we will only be down 1 starter on fhe Oline an they will have several guys who could fill in at RG Jordan Freeney There bringing in Opeta for a tryout N physical tomorrow along with other guys maybe they bring in a RT makes me Wish they Bucs signed George Fant when they had the chance

  24. IrishTony Says:

Really? Season over Jesus people! We’ve lost a decent guard and a good interior defensive lineman. We still have four starters on the line due to return. I’m way more concerned about the loss of skill position players.

  25. IrishTony Says:

Plus the defense is generally healthy. I’m telling we still win 11-12 games. If Baker goes down then I’ll capitulate

  26. unbelievable Says:

    JFC.

I called in back in training camps. The injury virus is taking down our team.

  27. IrishTony Says:

Everybody doubting this team please leave now. Suddenly Maych is the second coming. He’s serviceable but not irreplaceable in this scheme

  28. Les Says:

I say ,don’t freak out .let’s see how the jets game go’s if there is a drop off or not .if there is then we might have problems need to be fixed .

  29. JReel Buc Says:

This team looked so good on paper with the exception of Dennis he was always trash

  30. Buc1987 Says:

Things will shake out just fine…settle down everyone.

  31. Woodman Says:

The season is over WTF. Who are these nuts on this blog. Why don’t we just tell the NFL SORRY we can’t play the rest of the season so we will see next year. Glad the team does not have the mentality of the people on this site. We are 2 games into the season nobody knows how this will play out. Geeeez so many idiots here why do I come here ?

  32. Obvious Says:

You can’t legitimately compete for a superbowl with this many injuries. Sorry.

I’m as high on this roster and staff as anyone not stoned.

Wirfs ain’t coming back this week and Luke was on crutches on Monday night.

Q up the middle next week is going to be tough and I cannot stomach even thinking about the eagles front.

  33. Rod Munch Says:

Are you kidding me… wow, that sucks. Cody had improved to the point of being considered one of the better guards in football. Wow.

  34. Oxycondomns Says:

as a gm licht should look into injury prevention

  35. Daryl Green Says:

Jesus we’ll we have the best Offense line coach in the business.

  36. Bucky Says:

It sucks, but it is football. Yall act like no other team has bad injuries too. I am glad he is getting surgery since Jenson never bothered and that ended his career.

  37. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Crazy amount of injuries this early in the season. Bucs will find a way.

  38. Bucs Fan in Ohio Says:

I can’t wait for all the smooth brain “Next Man Up” takes.

The Next Man Up always sucks in the NFL. If he was any good, he’d be playing.

  39. Hammerhead Says:

Wirfs can’t get back fast enuf.

Possibility playing zone defense and defense makes turnovers?

Dennis looks fast. Hopefully, he can play.

Looking like we need extra Tight Ends for extra help.

  40. ManU fan Says:

Looking at the film vs Texans, Mauch was the key lineman for most of.the key running plays. Mauch led the way for Rashad Whites last second touchdown as well as most of Whites and Irvings runs up the middle. This loss is the biggest so far this season and makes you wonder if this can be the Bucs year or not. Maybe Bucs can setup a workable pass protection line but the loss of a solid running game changes everything.

  41. MelvinJunior Says:

The Bucs are looking to be a little ‘light’ on the picks for the 2026 Draft. Gonna HAVE TO make some moves before the deadline.

  42. MelvinJunior Says:

GOTTA get it outta Baker’s hands ASAP with some short quick intermediate routes, and IT’S TIME for “Mr. Otton” to STEP TF UP.

  43. Greg-therealone Says:

I don’t know what some of you are talking about. They’ll be fine? In case you hadn’t noticed that’s the whole line. There is no one in the position they were intended to play in. No one.

That’s game over. You can’t have it both ways. Coming into the season – “continuity on the line is the most important thing…” vs THIS. Sorry, but that’s laughable.

i don’t think I can remember any team losing the entire offensive line and having a successful season. That’s just not realistic. Sorry.

  44. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

Barely making the playoffs seems like our ceiling now and I thought this was potentially a Superbowlv season for us… Sad, dang it man

  45. BUC4L Says:

Look do I realistically think the season is over when we just lost two stud trench guys well it depends on how you define a season. I define a season as winning the Super Bowl because that’s all I care about, and in fact I think the Kancey injury killed our chances more. Do I think we will still have a great season absolutely! I’m just super worried about our chances now for the ultimate prize. We have to go find another defensive trench guy to fix our odds, and again curb stomp this injury bug out of here. Go Bucs! Licht will figure it out. He’s the man!

  46. Danfan Says:

As a few folks have also pointed out, my comment on season being over is as Superbowl contenders. Sure, without the guys who’ve gone down, we can grit out some wins in the regular season against average teams. Without Kancey, Mauch, a rusty Godwin and McMillan, being able to compete at the pointy end of the season with the likes of the Packers, Eagles, Rams, Lions, seems a step too far. Obviously, we aren’t the only team with injuries, but this many to key starters? I don’t think any of the other contenders have had as many starters injured yet, but I admit I haven’t looked at their injury lists.

  47. FortMyersDave Says:

I am with Aqualung on the Creamsicles. The Bucs are 1-5 or so in them. If they lose to the Jets the Glazers need to retire them and let Bucco Bruce enjoy his retirement in Key West with his significant other.

  48. adam from ny Says:

yeah by halftime i was saying this is one tough game…

it didn’t look like week 2 action…it looked more like december football…

we lost dudes in this game…

mauch and kancey are key pieces on their respective lines…

by the end of the game when bake too off his helmet, on camera, he looked to have literally been thru a war…

houston is a tough team and they came to play monday night…

hopefully we can win sunday vs the jets, without the exertion that was necessary to get by the texans

  49. Todd Says:

    Licht’s got this.

  50. Lightningvinny Says:

I mean Jordan is playing well at LG,,, when we get our guys back Tristan, Jordan , Barton, Ben , Luke ,,, That’s still a good 5 ,, we just need a 6,7,8 to back them up

  51. Zoocomics Says:

Whelp, we will see what this coaching staff and/or scouting department is made of. We’re already filling the holes as these guys fall-out.

It just goes to show you how special that 2020 Super Bowl year was. Very hard to make deep run, let alone a Super Bowl without being healthy.

  52. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Mauch’s knee injury will require surgery. That is expected to sideline Mauch for the rest of the 2025 season.’

Bummer. Same goes with Calijah Kancey’s pec injury. Bummer, BIG TIME. But we haven’t (yet) lost the war. We’ve got a LOT of guys hurt as we work towards Sunday’s game against the Jets, but that’s the next battle, and that’s all these players & coaches are focused on right now. How to WIN the next battle.

And we can still win that game, although surely that’s gonna be another dogfight. Jets know full-well that we’re really hurting physically in multiple starting positions. Their Job #1 will be to play a PHYSICAL game against us (of which they’re more than capable BTW).

I anticipate a low-scoring game because we’ll be using a VERY makeshift OLine. Only Bredeson & Barton are left from our regular starting OLine (Wirfs, Goedeke & now Mauch are toast for the Jets game). I don’t know if projected signee Dan Feeney (center/guard experience) can be ready, but he’s a possibility. Michael Jordan is also a possibility; Bucs put him on the Practice Squad after he played 100% of the snaps in Games 1 & 2 for us (not a clue why), but if he’s healthy he’s in the mix IMO.

After those 4 OLinemen though, Bucs are REALLY into unknowns. Charlie Heck played 85% of the snaps at Tackle in the Houston game. Elijah Klein (G) & Benjamin Chukwuma (T) are both on our active roster, but neither has seen any action this season (OK, or ever). We’ve still got Luke Haggard (T), Tyler McLellan (T), Lorenz Metz (OL) & Ben Scott (T) on our Practice Squad, all with good size but zero experience.

Our OLine coach & Running Game coordinator, Kevin Carberry, is probably shaking his head right about now, but he’s the key to winning the Jets game IMO. If he can mold a REALLY makeshift OLine into a decent run-blocking unit, we’ll have a deent chance to win. The Bills beat them 30-10 in their last game by running the ball 43 times against them, for 224 yards & 3 TDs. Josh Allen only passed it 27 times with only 15 complete (0 TDs). Bills controlled the TOP however 38:21 to 21:39. Their running game was the key. But so was the Bills defense; Jets were 0-for-11 on 3rd down conversions (but 3-for-3 on 4th down conversions).

  55. TomMoore4President2028 Says:

Saw this headline and started yelling the fword. I feel like our star players are only getting older, and we can’t win a Super Bowl with them if the supporting cast around them is falling apart. Is now the time to mortgage the future and start trading picks for players on the 0-2 teams?

  56. Stpetematt Says:

Is this an ACL? Or what kind of knee injury?

  57. Davyboy Says:

It ain’t over till it’s over!! Let’s see what our new OC can come up with, he might surprise us. The boys will be coming back soon.

  58. Colonel Angus Says:

Coaching staff is gonna have to earn their pay this season.

  59. ReeeBarrr Says:

  60. Larrd Says:

The season isn’t over. If Wirfs and Goedeke can be back in the next month the OL will be excellent once again. I am looking forward to seeing Klein at guard, though Michael Jordan has been fine and can probably play RG, too.

  61. Aqualung Says:

FtMyersDave – LOL, you’re the artchitect of that Bucco Bruce bit! Your plan for Bucco Bruce is priceless. And I think he has a partner and a side piece, and they all get together in Key West to “game plan roles.” Well done.

  62. eoschwartz Says:

Sorry optimists, if you can’t protect Baker the ability to put up points is very damaging. The right side of the line is backups and the left side is missing Wirfs. The Bucs have to do some passing because good NFL teams will load up and kill Mayfield and stop the run if these backups can’t play. If Licht is all in for Super Bowl contention he will have to give up some precious draft picks for some starters from bad teams with bad quarterbacks.

GTFOH with your extreme lack of knowledge, Dr Dumbarse. Always some idiot with zero experience or education that thinks they know better than the pros that are paid handsomely for a reason. Seriously, STFU.

  64. Bobby Says:

Why is the season over?? Ridiculous! We’re getting Godwin and Wirfs back and Luke will only be out a few weeks. We can get along without Cody for the rest of the year. I’m more upset about Kancy getting injured. Other NFL teams are going through the same thing. It would be different if we were the only team with injuries but we’re not. Jason Licht will get it figured out and other players will step up. It’s just like the game day threads. The other team scores first and suddenly we’re toast. It’s early in the season.

  65. BigZ Says:

Ek is right, Wyatt Teller is a nice player.

Maybe if the Bengals fail Hendrickson becomes available at the deadline.

  66. sunny Says:

wyatt teller and baker were besties in cleveland and are still really good friends. he and his wife were in tampa in april to celebrate baker’s bday. he’s got a kid around the same age as baker’s too i think.

that would be a great fit but doubtful cleveland would go for it.

  67. Outrigger Says:

We just need to find a way to beat the Jets and get to 3-0. I expect losses against Philly and Seattle before wins against 49ers and Saints take us to 5-2. By then Wirfs, Godwin and Goedeke should be back and ready for those tough games against the Rams and Bills.
