Baker Mayfield Magic Strikes Again

September 21st, 2025

Was there really any doubt?

Yeah, of course there was.

The Bucs choked away a 23-6 fourth-quarter lead and trailed 27-23 with 1:49 remaining. Tampa Bay was struggling to run the ball and Mike Evans was in the locker room with a hamstring injury.

No problem. Baker Mayfield plays for Tampa Bay. Mayfield engineered a seven-play, 48-yard drive for the winning 36-yard field goal, his third late game-winning drive in consecutive weeks.

Mayfield missed an open deep shot to start the final drive to a wide open Tez Johnson, but the Bucs’ franchise quarterback buckled down after that. He threw three strikes to Emeka Egbuka (even though one didn’t count) and delivered the crushing blow, 20 yards to Sterling Shepard. After that, it was just setting up for the winning kick.

Mayfield has 6 touchdown passes against zero intereceptions this season and his two fumbles didn’t result in turnovers.

The Bucs would be in the NFL sewer without Mayfield.

Baker cannot perform magic every week. The rest of the offense needs to step up because they’re stinking it up right now, especially the offensive line

  2. BucfaninMi Says:

    Hopefully Wirfs is back soon

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Todd Bowles should be pissed off at all the careless penalties too

  4. Stpetematt Says:

I hope the Bucs learned a lot of things from this game. They have **so much** to fix! They could just as easily be 0-3 as they are 3-0 right now. Please fix special teams massively. Stop playing down to the level of your opponents! Every game shouldn’t fall on Baker. Give the guy a break!

  5. OR Buc Says:

^^ Well it looks like he can

  6. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I myself along with a lot of other longtime bucs fans saw a game like this coming, because that’s what the bucs do

…..they stink it up and blow leads

  7. Chef Baker Says:

That was a catch from EE. The jets TD was not. The refs see what they want to see. Bucs win anyway! Ugly but we won!!

  8. Miller5252 Says:

I hope Grizz learned a big lesson today and why you don’t go into turtle mode. It’s the NFL, these teams can come back and beat your a$$. You get a team down and you keep pounding them

  9. TheBucsAnthem Says:

The Eagles are a good team. If the bucs play as bad as they have the last 3 games, they will get destroyed by the Eagles.

  10. Bojim Says:

Figured Baker would get us into FG range. He wont make till season end if he keeps running like that. But he’s Baker. Sure is sweet to have him as a Buc.

  11. Redzone Says:

Every Bowles game is 50/50 even if you have Tom Brady

  12. NCbucfan Says:

Godwin and Wirfs should be back next week. Hopefully Jordan is healthy as well. Our special teams is a disgrace. Already a blocked Punt, now a blocked fg, and for a td no less.

  13. Tye Says:

Thats inexcusable for the defense of a supposed guru to give up that many points that late in the game… Bowels needs to step aside and get a defensive coordinator that does a much better than this…
Eagles will absolutely consume this defense next week if they are coached like this!

  14. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Say what you will, I for one am happy with a 3-0 start, pretty or not, especially with all the injuries. Room for improvement? Sure, but a win is a win is a win.

  15. PSL Bob Says:

Bowles says the team needs to have that “killer” instinct and put away opponents at the end of the game. He did anything but that! The defense went into turtle mode (prevent defense), and the offensive play calling in the 4th quarter was conservative as hell. I love that we won and are off to a 3-0 start, but this game should have been a blowout the way our defense played through the first half.

  16. geno711 Says:

Great culture from this team. Starts at the top of the organization. They got the right men leading between Licht, Bowles and Baker.

    Wow. Well done.

  17. Nano107 Says:

    Fire special teams coach

  18. Stan says Says:

It’s a fine line between winning and loosing in the NFL i am glad the games are Wins. Take them however we can get them. To many time it seems like to me they go the other way. Looks like this team has learned how to (Win baby). YES

  19. TheBucsAnthem Says:

That is such a true statement Redzone

  20. Dreambig Says:

Grizz and Bowles let up. Why did the Jets all of the sudden move down the field effortlessly in the 4th. Bowles needs to start kicking some coaching butt on special teams. Blocked punt last week, blocked FG this week. 3 weeks in a row special teams has almost lost the game for us.

  21. Jeffrey Becker Says:

yes there was doubt. funny guy joe lol.

  22. heyjude Says:

Buka had that catch. The refs were against the Bucs from the beginning. Baker is one of the best for sure. His calmness under pressure is phenomenal.

  23. SB~LV Says:

    It’s a W
But … can’t keep counting on last minute heroics
I get it with the unimaginable list of starters injured and not playing
On the bright side we are developing great depth
Oh …. The Bucs review was never a completion because of the knee touch before the last toe touched the ground.
Oh… the Jets TD was a bobble by the WR and review crew
    3-0 💪💪💪💪

  24. 941bucsfan Says:

Lol bucs fans… “we could easily be 0-3”… you know how many close games the bucs have lost in the last 15 years… relax, and enjoy us being 3-0 with a makeshift offensive line, and a special teams, that has missed field goals, and gotten kicks blocked

  25. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

I’ve never seen a teams Offense and Defense Coordinators almost give away an entire game. Blame the Coordinators. Gizzard took his foot off the pedal and was trying to run down the clock with 24 minutes left and Todd Bowles decided to stop blitzing and play Tampa Bay last year football and give receivers a 5 yard cushion.Who is the Special Teams Coach and why does he still have a job. The punter almost had another blocked with his lackadasical style. It’s one thing for another teams offense to suddenly rise up against the Bucs but the coaches tried to give it away.

  26. TheShaz Says:

The Refs have their shoulders iced while they need their eyes checked.

Makeshift offensive line was as bad as everyone expected. Three weeks in the season and the Injury List gets longer and longer with key players.

Baker is making a name for himself, 3 weeks, 3 late drives to win the game.

We gotta get healthy, and we have the Eagles next. Nothing is easy in the NFL.

  27. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ WestCoastBucsFan

I don’t think you or any other bucs fans celebrating these wins the last 3 weeks realize how “BAD” the bucs have played as a football team…

We could easily be 0-3 instead of 3-0…………

  28. Winny Testaverde Says:

The last 6 minutes felt like an eternity. Watching The RedZone endings I was sure it was over…until they showed the blocked FG returned for a TD. Typically I say a win is a win but that felt awful until the very end.

  29. Bakerfan Says:

If Coen was calling plays none of these games would have been close.

  30. BucsfaninOregon Says:

    1. This team would have lost this game in the 1st qtr. if it was the Rams, Eagles or a team of that caliber. Worst quarter for Bucs in memory.
    2. This team is going to loose next week- -book it!
    3. I have been watching this team since 1978. Baker Mayfield is the best all around QB the Bucs have EVER had! Yea, even better than the Goat.

  31. SenileSenior Says:

So much for the team having the “killer instinct”. It is on Mayfield and he has done it three times in 2025. The only thing I can say is “Bucs Wln!, Bucs win! Bucs win!”.

  32. Tucker Says:

We need you Tristan hurry back

  33. jimmy Says:

the grit and mental toughness of this team makes them very dangerous.

  34. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I actually watched the jaguars game this week. And you can see the offensive creativity with liam cohen, but you don’t see that with josh grizzard

  35. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Sterling Sheppard had a low key awesome game today for a person who should be WR 5

  36. Aqualung Says:

Here’s the reason we’d be in the sewer without Mayfield.

    “ The Bucs choked away a 23-6 fourth-quarter lead and trailed 27-23 with 1:49 remaining. ”

Guess why? The two half job genius who has the lightest gag reflex in the NFL. When you’re doing something that’s working and have built a three score lead, what you do is change everything up to super soft shell turtle cover no one zone.

It’s sickening to see this masturtard bungle a gimme. A lay down hand.

He should not be working tomorrow.

  37. Half_Sac Says:

Is the person with the top comment just unaware of what’s been happening with the O-LINE? Everyone but one starter is hurt lol

  38. Canabuc Says:

I am grateful thankful for the win. Let’s be perfectly honest. We were with a patchwork offensive line against a Jets defence that has a good defensive line and a pro bowl player in Quinnen Williams.

I think it was a bit of a mistake to run Bucky so much. Rachaad when he touched, the ball looked good and has a bit more power than Bucky and I would have especially in the second half with the lead given him the ball a little bit more.

I am also not really sure why we don’t seem to use the tight end in this offense. I am pretty sure that none of our tight ends got a single target today. I also think that Culp is a good enough player that he should get some playing time, especially with how banged up or receiving core is. He would be a threat against most linebackers and safeties with his side speed combination. So in that regard, I am a bit disappointed in Josh Grizzard because I think there is a certain dynamism that is missing from this offence that we had under Coen last year.

Hopefully, next week we get back Tristan Wirfs and Chris Godwin and more importantly also that whatever happened with Mike Evans at the end of the game was just some cramping because of the heat and that it is nothing that will keep them out for any length of time. If Wirfs is back then at least the left side of our offensive line could go back to last years. I think Klein can be serviceable at right guard or if Michael Jordan is healthy he can go back to right guard. And well Heck would be the only real weaker spot on that line but is serviceable.

  39. orlbucfan Says:

I picked up years ago that the Bucs had to outplay the opposing team and refs. The first half of this one was just sorry. The calls were beyond ridiculous. Are the NY Jets that bad? If so, put them up for sale, and let the fans have a shot at buying them.

  40. jcscycles Says:

If Wirfs and Godwin come back next week things will improve dramatically. They probably shift Klein over to right guard where he played in college.

Not saying it guarantees a win, but it will be an improvement. And Ebuka sure looks like a real #1 receiver. Looked like he caught that last ball.

    Go Bucs 3-0!!!!

  41. Delusional Intelligence Says:

    Baker = MVP

  42. Oneilbuc Says:

Todd Bowles took the foot off the gass in this game but Baker came threw again. This is the Baker I need in the playoffs!!

  43. Obvious One Says:

“MAYFIELD” for the Win. Is there really any doubt? That is Mayfield DESPITE Tobby Bowles and his BS Prevent Defense for the “attempted loss”

Toilets statement coming out for the second half…..
“We’ve got to keep our foot on the pedal and Mame Sure we win”

Turns out that tobby bowl’s Turtled Up soft shell defense looks NOTHING LIKE PUTTING YOUR PEDAL TO THE METAL because for the Most Part , THAT strategy Puts the BRAKE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR and promotes the losing side of ball..

He might have just as well came out of the tunnel and told the truth. You know the one……

He should have said, I’m going with MY USUAL “chicken little” strategy to try and keep the opponent I. The game…. no problem. Now THAT’S tobby’s “usual strategy”

  44. Gipper Says:

Bucs struggled behind a makeshift Oline but Baker found a way without ME13. The defense, as I have been telling all since the draft, has not materially improved. They proved it again today. Not sure how many times Jets had to punt. Defense made Tyrod look like an All Pro. Not going to keep getting away with it.

  45. Dano507 Says:

I don’t care what anyone says. That was a catch by Egbuka!

  46. Timbucs2 Says:

We would have won comfortably if they can cut down on the O-line penalties.

  47. Obvious One Says:

Apologies… I should call him by his Real Name…. It’s not Tobby. His actual name is

GOMER ~ BARF ALL A MULE.. That’s his given name…

  48. Marky mark Says:

I don’t think we will take the eagles lightly. Watch us blow them out.

  49. Jehzsa Says:

“It’s hard to win in this league”. Todd Bowles (9/21/2025 post-game)

And your coaching isn’t making it any easier…

  50. Rod Munch Says:

BTW, why does Baker look like such a goober in that photo? He looks more like the waterboy than the starting QB.

  51. 813bucboi Says:

    Zero INTs….zero losses

    Great work baker

    GO BUCS

  52. Obvious One Says:

Though…. I WILL Say that when he was playing ball like a man, the team Even Without a respectable front line looked Pretty Good, Especially in the first half..

The defense Impressed as for the most part “considering”, SO Did the offense.

I’ll give it that much. It wasn’t the team I had a problem with. Nope. It’s the Gomer running it! He Must drink a few.beers or something at half time because what pops out after the first half and it’s Mr. (drunk) Hyde time every game. I’ve NEVER SEEN a coach try So Hard to keep opponents in a game! NEVER!

  53. Jeffrey Becker Says:

    score’s wrong

  54. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Think about how lucky us Bucs fans have been going from Brady up Baker! We’d be 0-3 without Mayfield. Need to clean up our special teams, Oline and passrush but I’ll take 3-0 anyday.

… Defense made Tyrod look like an All Pro. Not going to keep getting away with it.

Not sure about that Gipper. Taylor dropped back 40 times to throw. Passed for 197 yards in those 40 drop backs — 36 attempts and 4 sacks. The 4 sacks netted another negative 29 yards. So that was 168 in net yards in 40 dropbacks, and that does not include a pick six 55-yard return. You might have a low threshold for an All-Pro or were watching a different game from the rest of us.

  56. geno711 Says:

    Gipper —

In the 2024 NFL season, the league average for “net yards per pass play” was approximately 6.7 yards.

Not the 4.2 NY/A that Taylor had today.

Keep watching the games for better context. Many of us on the site will help you to understand those nuances going forward.

  57. geno711 Says:

    Gipper

Taylor had two turnovers today. One lost fumble and one pick six.
    Not exactly All Pro level.

  58. Gipper Says:

    geno711,

I watched the last 8 minutes. Tyrod and the Jets moved the ball with ease. Have seen this movie many times before in the last couple of years.

  59. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Geno

As usual agree with you. Taylor played GREAT!!! Give the guy his due. He was scrambling for his life and made some excellent plays,

Speaking of excellent plays. Obviously that catch by Ebuka was a highlight reel worthy effort, as was the one the zebras blew. But the first half one handed grab while a thing of beauty and amazing, kinda took our eyes off the fact that Baker threw a freaking PERFECT pass where ONLY EE could get it.

The Bucs need to figure a way to survive the total loss of the OL. We have ONE starter left!!! And he’s playing out of position. I guess two starters I forgot Bredeson got moved to Center from his starting OG.

So I exaggerated. Just THREE starters missing and the other two remaining were out of their normal positions. And it LOOKED like it today.

  60. Davyboy Says:

    Well, well, well😚🏴‍☠️

  61. BucNasty Says:

    That’s a typo. They trailed 27-26 not 27-23.

  62. Itzok Says:

baker is on a heater. clutch despite missing tez

  63. Aqualung Says:

    Tez would’ve dropped it anyway.

  64. Bucs4Ever Says:

    SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Let’s bake!!!!!!

  65. Bartow Buc Says:

There never was a doubt in my mind!! However, I have just about worn the arms off of my chair !!
I’m very glad to see that our kicker is seemingly back on track !!

    Go Bucs !!
