Aqib Talib Says Bucs Defense Isn’t Legit
September 16th, 2025When ex-Bucs Aqib Talib and Gerald McCoy are arguing, Joe pays rapt attention. With 11 Pro Bowl trips between them, these dudes are passionate and knowledgeable about all things NFL.
Today’s topic was the Bucs.
In-studio for The Arena with Skip Bayless and world famous soccer streaker and international TikTok influencer Kinsey Wolanski (what a country we live in), Talib and McCoy got into it on the state of the Buccaneers.
McCoy, of course, is the lead Bucs cheerleader in the national media. He’s always got solid analysis and can argue his takes well, but he’s all Bucs homer and can’t hide it. McCoy predicts the Bucs will be in this season’s Super Bowl.
Talib is more of a realist. He likes Baker Mayfield. He feels good about the Bucs, but don’t dare tell Talib they’re top quality.
“That team don’t drip championship at all,” Talib said.
The 2008 Bucs first-round draft pick who played with Tom Brady in New England and won a Super Bowl with Peyton Manning in Denver, Talib says the Bucs are the fifth-best team in the NFC. He’s adamant that the Rams, Packers, Eagles and Lions are better than Tampa Bay.
For Talib, it’s all about the Bucs not having a good enough defense.
“I don’t know if [Baker] can win the chip unless he get a Ravens defense or a Broncos defense,” Talib said. “He’s not a game manager, but you fu**’n need legit defense to win chips. And I don’t know if he got that right now. … Now if you’re like a Tom Brady type of guy, then your defense can be a little lower level and you can really drive the bus. I don’t put Baker in that [category].”
That got McCoy’s voice to rise signficantly. He sees the Bucs as already overcoming massive adversity to be 2-0 and says that’s a sign of how strong the team is.
Joe sort of agrees with McCoy and Talib. Joe doesn’t see a Bucs defense that’s ready to win playoff games, but it’s very early and the Bucs might just have the offense (when fully healthy) to overcome a middling defense. Special teams? No comment.

ZERO pass rush unless Bowles dials up blitzes. Same ole story. And don’t even get me started with Reddick dropping in coverage rather than pass rushing.
September 16th, 2025 at 4:31 pm
He’s not wrong, one injuries.. 2 lack of depth..
0 pass rush. Need MLB help, LVD is old, SVD sucks in coverage.. yaya gets pressure but never finishes sacks.. Reddick, is okay but was non existent last game. Vita, plays 60% of snaps. We need help on defense.. though Zyon and Dean, AW31 and Tyee played great.
September 16th, 2025 at 4:31 pm
Its hard to argue with Talib at this point.
September 16th, 2025 at 4:32 pm
50/50 half and half The Bowles Way. Our perfect season is 8-8-1
September 16th, 2025 at 4:32 pm
I see the defense as being able to improve over the course of the season… Too soon to write them off as “middling”.
Offense too – we have plenty of room for improvement in all 3 areas.
September 16th, 2025 at 4:32 pm
They are playing decent. Still no pass rush from the edges.. Diaby is definitely our best edge by a bit I think and he’s not known for huge sack numbers.
September 16th, 2025 at 4:36 pm
Nor was his taxi driver!.. You talkin’ to me?
September 16th, 2025 at 4:36 pm
Our pass rush is anemic and will get worse with Kancey out. Our DBs are suspect and LBs outside of LVD is too. We may be top 20 D and that’s not gonna cut it!
September 16th, 2025 at 4:40 pm
First of all, we know the offense is going to be putting up 30 points a game when the O line and receivers are healthy. Plus just Baker and Grizz working through the play calling and getting better as the year goes.
As for the defense, I think they are very good, but if they get a four man pass rush and they can be great.
With their offense, they’re definitely good enough though
September 16th, 2025 at 4:40 pm
It’s Mayfield’s fault!!!!!!!…….Bucs defense is a joke with the exception of run defense which is very solid. NFL is a passing league and Bucs pass defense remains pathetic. With just an average defense, Bucs will have 12-5 season and make it to NFC Championship. Unfortunately, for those who can plainly see, Bucs defense is below average.
September 16th, 2025 at 4:42 pm
Disappointed JoeBucsFan is platforming the opinion of this wackjob. He stood idly by while his brother murdered someone during a youth football game. Not to mention when he tried to kill a guy with a firearm while he was playing for the Bucs.
September 16th, 2025 at 4:51 pm
I think Talib is a total turd after what he did to the Bucs, but I can’t disagree with him. Other than Vea, Lvd, and maybe Winfield this defense just doesn’t have any elite level players. Reddick isn’t getting it done nobody in the secondary is a shutdown corner. YaYa, SVD, and Braswell are a waste of space.
This defense is going to get killed by the top tier offenses in the schedule.
September 16th, 2025 at 4:54 pm
I don’t think Talib’s take is inaccurate or an insult. Let’s keep winning, avoid the annual mid-season swoon, and see how we are playing in December, when it matters.
September 16th, 2025 at 4:59 pm
I’d still be interested in trading for Trey Hendrickson now that the Bengals are done without Burrow. Pass rush needs to get better
September 16th, 2025 at 5:00 pm
Gipper … ‘Bucs defense is a joke with the exception of run defense which is very solid. NFL is a passing league and Bucs pass defense remains pathetic.’
Starting in 2020 our defense finished #8, #5, #13, #7 & #16 in Points Allowed for an average of #10. We’ve given up a yearly average of 355 points over those 5 years, an average of 20.9 PPG. We’ve had a huge changeover of personnel & talent during that period, and oh ya, made the playoffs every single year & even managed to win a Super Bowl in the process.
I’d say that’s not bad for a team with a defense that’s a ‘joke’ Gipper. And BTW, the run defense has averaged between #5 & #6 in Rushing Yards Allowed during those years. I’m guessing the reason why is because that’s what our DC stresses & prioritizes. Our Pass Defense hasn’t fared nearly as well as we all know, but the combination of the two has nonetheless led to a defense that’s averaged a Top-10 ranking over that 5-year period.

I know they need something to talk about but we all know it’s only 2 games
September 16th, 2025 at 5:02 pm
Surprised at how badly Dennis has played so far. Maybe if his head stops spinning he’ll come around. It’s not like he was a first round pick.
If we could just catch int’s we’d look a lot better.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:06 pm
Our defense stood up time after time yesterday. A first and goal from the 2. A solid stand after a blocked field goal. Just because we don’t have a great pass rush from the edges doesn’t mean its not a great defense. We held Atlanta to 20 points and the Texans to 19 points. Both, on the road! Thats great D!! Its the offense that’s sputtering. Talib and Joe and most of you don’t know what you’re talking about. We would win a lot of games holding our opponents to 20 points per game.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:06 pm
I hate to say it but it looks like opponents have figured out the weaknesses in pass coverage. T9 the point of actually creating s9ft spots in the zone coverage. Offenses are splitting the zones so well it’s causing confusion on who’s supposed to cover which WR as they enter and leave each zone. It looks like the Offensive coordinators are timing WR routes to clear out a zone. Creating a wide open WR. Not a novel concept but they are being extremely successful in causing confusion. That shouldn’t be happening at this level. There were multiple plays last night with several WR’s wide open at the same time. With defenders looking confused on who to cover.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:13 pm
Defense Rules,
Ok, I get it. SirVocea is a force in the middle except he can’t cover or tackle. The pass coverage the last couple of years and two games into the 2025 season has been a joke. This defense the last couple of years is comedic. Good football teams have great defenses. Great defenses shut opposing teams down when it is critical. The Bucs rarely do. Your stats don’t make me or many other Bucs fans feel reassured.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:13 pm
The best hope for the Bucs D was Kancey turning into a 15 sack guy. It will not happen this year and I strongly suspect it will never happen now.
The pass rush was ferocious on one Texans drive last night and that was about it. I do think people underestimate the offense, however. They might have best OL, best backfield, best group of receivers and MVP at qb by the end of the year, if everyone comes back as expected.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:13 pm
I’m not getting why so many people can’t fall in line behind Baker. What differences were there from Brady’s ’21 season with us, and Baker’s ’24 season with us?
September 16th, 2025 at 5:21 pm
There is a big gap between a team that wins a division and even wins a playoff game and one that wins it all.
Talib is more right than McCoy I think. Not enough pass rush. This team is still damn good and man the O could be really special. But can you beat Philly in the cold?
I have my doubts.
The Bucs are way more than a .500 team though.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:21 pm
ATLBuc
Special teams has cost us points in both games too. Important points.
And the offense hasn’t taken full advantage of the good things the D has done.
Like Baker said, we haven’t plaid even close to our best ball…
We all better buckle up for this weekend… gonna get bumpy.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:24 pm
I don’t remember Brady ever winning a super bowl with a middling defense with the Pats or Bucs.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:26 pm
It’s hard to draw any conclusions right now due to injuries. Once we get Wirfs and Goedeke back (assuming Goedeke’s injury is not too serious), and we get Godwin and McMillan back by around midseason, we can have a very potent offense. I tend to agree with Talib about the defense…for now.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:26 pm
What is surprising is how Aqib and Antonio Brown are not sharing a jail cell by now.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:32 pm
The team has always / still needs a DC. Bowles has been unable to put together a solid defense.
This years version remains the same as prior years: no pass rush, leaky secondary and an ILB (8) that is a huge liability in coverage.
Its been this way for far too long.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:33 pm
“Joe sort of agrees with McCoy and Talib. Joe doesn’t see a Bucs defense that’s ready to win playoff games, but it’s very early and the Bucs might just have the offense (when fully healthy) to overcome a middling defense. Special teams?“
I think you can say after 2 games neither side of the ball is winning a playoff game. I will say, anybody with eyes can see that it took a long ssa time to add to 14 points, while our defense kept forcing PUNTS and not scores. As had they not this offense wouldn’t have had the time to pull its’ head out of its own arse.
We watched a 2 plays sequence that our QB caused his own fumble while scrambling(HUGE recovery by Racahaad), we don’t convert and next play the punt is getting blocked anyway.
Defense won that game while our offense was trying to figure it out, there’s nothing to underestimate. Yes they scored at the end to win, but we saw that same scenario last season plenty. Some of you guys just can’t give the defense credit, because then you’ll be crediting Bowles and that’s nasty work.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:41 pm
Eat the Bucs he always has ever since they got rid of him.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:42 pm
Let’s punch a cab driver while we’re at it.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:42 pm
We should have gone after micha
September 16th, 2025 at 5:42 pm
That was supposed to say he hates the Bucs sorry!
September 16th, 2025 at 5:43 pm
I think the Bucs are still a year or two away from having a legit defense. So far, most of us can see, the Bucs DBs will be a huge improvement over last year but our pass rush is worse than toilet water. Furthermore, Lavonte David is not getting any younger and SirVocea Dennis has yet to prove himself as a descent starter.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:50 pm
If Talib says the defense makes too many mistakes I have to agree. He’s the expert on shooting yourself in the foot.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:51 pm
Duh. Not gonna win a chip (maybe next year) but they sure are fun to watch!!!!
September 16th, 2025 at 5:51 pm
19.5 points allowed through 2 games. That’s a winning formula. Now only if our offense could put up more points, which should come as Grizz gets more comfortable.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:55 pm
I Think the defense has looked a lot better than the offense so far.
September 16th, 2025 at 5:55 pm
Logan Hall‘s rookie season I saw a few flashes where I thought he definitely had some potential . I definitely did not see a young veteran, defensive lineman, ready to dominate or even play at a high level when he came into that game…..
I have to say this dropping Reddick into coverage when he’s your best pass rusher just seems somewhat ridiculous……….. I think Light did a real good job in the off-season but sometimes he gets a little too cute and things. Oh what I have is good enough……… he definitely should’ve picked up another good D lineman/edge rusher and some linebacker depth…….. Dennis looks good one play and looks like he doesn’t belong on the field the next……… which if you do that three games in the NFL, it means you don’t belong on the field !! Dion Jones looks like he’s playing at a bigger matured weight and Just prob isn’t going to be the same player he once was. ………….. once again some very poor coaching popped up…….. The punter needs to be coached in that short field situation. He clearly was not !!that is terrible on the NFL level absolutely terrible!! We need to quit giving these jack wagons ( coaches) passes……… again ! The clock management at the end of the game was horrible. They left themselves to where they would’ve only had two plays, it worked out, but that was horrible clock management.. the special teams coverage also was horrible………. Running backs ,makeshift offensive line , D backs all get an A . Baker B plus , Rec B ,,,,, D line D- ,,, TE F ,,,,, kickers D , coaches C , Grizz A ………. D backs missed a few players, but they were for the most part in some of the best position I’ve seen in a long time and hold them to the yardage and total completions that they did overall is pretty impressive……. And yes, Baker had quite a bit of pressure…… the Texans have a study line in Baker had second and third read open a few times he just didn’t throw the ball and other times the routes were just pathetic and they were all covered….. Huge Win Go Bucs
September 16th, 2025 at 5:58 pm
The headline would carry actual weight if it were to read…..
“…The Bucs Defense Is Legit!”
September 16th, 2025 at 5:59 pm
He’s right our pass rush still sucks
September 16th, 2025 at 6:03 pm
Gipper … They’re not ‘my stats’; they’re the result of what this defense has accomplished over the past 5 years. Never said what we’re seeing now is ‘great defense’. But it is getting the job done, because last I looked we’re 2-0 despite having multiple injuries once again.
For the most part, I think you ‘get what you pay for’. Bucs have put our money primarily into offense since 2020, and it’s paid off. I’ve stated before that I’m not a huge fan of SVD, mostly because I consider the center of the defense to be critical & starting a 5th Rnd pick who has very limited experience AND a significant injury background doesn’t seem like a wise move. Same goes for a number of other positions, especially when it comes to pass rush. I see Todd Bowles as making compromises all over the place (in terms of scheme?) mostly because the horses aren’t there.
All-in-all though, giving up only 2 rushing TDs & 2 passing TDs, plus 4 FGs, in the first 2 games of the season is actually better than I expected. I think it’ll be super-hard to be competitive in the next couple of games because of all our injuries, but hey, I’m not gonna count us out yet. We found a way to win in the first 2 games; maybe we can continue that in the next 2.
September 16th, 2025 at 6:03 pm
Talib is an idiot- bucs got three sacks without Kancey, svd is a liability but tell me the defense is not better than last year, our dbs are better, reddick will get there and todd will blitz when he needs to
September 16th, 2025 at 6:04 pm
What defense without a legit pass rusher is elite?
September 16th, 2025 at 6:10 pm
Kinsey is a smokeshow, damn.
September 16th, 2025 at 6:12 pm
I like the look of Elijah Robert’s. Plus he’s bigger and stronger than Calijah Kancey. Im curious to see how he plays for a whole game. I think he may be an asset we didn’t realize we had.
Our D has been pretty awesome both games. They’ve been stopping the run and the pass at critical moments. Keeping opponents to 20 and under we should win almost every game. Soon by a lot more- once Godwin Jr. returns. Then there’s too many good receivers to possibly cover and double covering will no longer be an option. This will make someone open on almost every down!
People on this site are definitely underestimating both our defense, and our offense. And our coach. He’s proven his strength of character by hiring people to help in things he’s not good at (clock a management guy was a genius last night!). He also didn’t get in the way of the Bucs running hurry-up. That’s a GREAT coach.
September 16th, 2025 at 6:16 pm
Good health throughout the season is a key ingredient to a championship season…thats not going good at all right now!
September 16th, 2025 at 6:16 pm
Well it is a Bowles defense. NFL defense. That makes it legit. Might not work but it is Legit. It will work about half the time. 50/50
September 16th, 2025 at 6:21 pm
Talib you do understand the Bucs have 7 starters out? Just wait till teams gotta prepare for a top 5 offensive line with McMillan Godwin Ebuka otton and Evans on the field at the same time then you have a top 5 running back coming out of the backfield. Defenses better hope they don’t get all those guys healthy at the same time. Your talking about 4 pro bowl caliber receivers with a top 15 tight end. and a pro bowl caliber running back Who you gonna cover one on one?!! Ebuka? McMillan? Godwin? Evans? Good luck with that. If the Bucs get all those players on the field at the same time my goodness your talking about a team that will be like the old St Louis Rams greatest show on turf. However I do agree the defense needs help. Would love to have Trey Hendricks and the Bengals may be receptive of trading him now with their QB now gone for the season. A couple 1st round picks would go really far in improving their O-line. Bucs defense is close to being top 10. They need a pass rusher and a young inside linebacker. Sir Vocea is playing well though. Give Bucs a 15 sack per year guy and your talking about a serious contender.
As always Go Bucs
September 16th, 2025 at 6:23 pm
This Bucs D is doing pretty good in the most important stat, points.
Holding opponents to 19.5 points so far.
That’s Championship-caliber if that holds up for the entire season…
September 16th, 2025 at 6:24 pm
Hilarious that Talib calls the Ravens defense a chip.
what were they good at on defense last year or this year?
September 16th, 2025 at 6:25 pm
Love the Bucs offense. The concern all offseason was the defense. While they added two corners, it wont matter if teams have all day to throw bc of a terrible pass rush. No QB is afraid to play the Bucs. Zero pass rush, and zero chance of an interception. Not to sound negative, but it has been an issue since Suh, Barrett and JPP left. While JL has tried to address, some things he isnt great at is drafting pass rushers. Time to make a move if Bucs want to be legit contenders and that is the hard truth.
September 16th, 2025 at 6:29 pm
When this offense is totally healthy, the Bucs are as good as anyone in the NFC. It would be criminal for Licht and Bowles not to make some type of move to shore up the defense, in order to make a championship run.
I personally believe they should trade for Hendrickson if he is really available. The guy is from the area. It would be like a home coming for him. You just know he’d play his ass off!!
September 16th, 2025 at 6:36 pm
We play 3 of 4 of those teams that Talib said is better than us in the NFC so I guess we shall see?
September 16th, 2025 at 6:41 pm
Mhystc Says:
0 pass rush.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Bucs actually got after the QB in the 2nd half. The issue is the OLB SUCK. Bowles is back to drawing up blitzes from ILB and S and they are getting home. Unfortunately, the guys that are paid to rush the QB don’t have the talent. That’s Talib’s point.
September 16th, 2025 at 6:43 pm
I’m not going to call this a championship level team, that would be ridiculous after very close wins against middling teams, but a W is a W, and the king of teams that won vs a soft schedule, was the 1999 Rams, and they didn’t have a championship level defense, instead they won on offense, and by paying off the refs in the playoffs. Speaking of which , the Bucs haven’t at all played a soft schedule, two road games to start a season vs two middling teams isn’t soft, just using that Rams team as an example – and in any case the Glazers need to break open the checkbook so things like the week 1 ref BS doesn’t end up costing the team W’s.
September 16th, 2025 at 6:44 pm
The Tampa Bay defense is Licht’s folly.
September 16th, 2025 at 6:50 pm
Our defense can pull a game like for example if we go to superbowl, our def is able to stop anybody. But consistent? No way. The only reason we looked good last night was because we were playing Houston.
September 16th, 2025 at 7:17 pm
With injuries and missing players we are 15th in total yards given up, 2nd in RZ defense, 7th in 3rd Down Defense, and 13th in scoring defense. Our defense right now is actually better than our offense based purely on the rankings.
Finding out that Kancey is out for the season though means we need to look at acquiring somebody for the d line.
September 16th, 2025 at 7:21 pm
BS….This defense for two weeks in a row had first & goal stops…with Falcons 7 plays stopped before a score by inches.
Blocked punt & punt return short field scoring.
We do need to fix the softness early.
September 16th, 2025 at 7:25 pm
Well, hit him in the head with a helmet! Knock some sense into this biotch!
September 16th, 2025 at 7:31 pm
I do not pay attention to anyone named…Talib
September 16th, 2025 at 7:37 pm
Sure, wish David Walker hadn’t gotten hurt.
September 16th, 2025 at 7:43 pm
I’m wondering just how effective Desmond Watson is with a simple bull rush. Even if he hasn’t quite lost the weight yet, 400 lbs will require two offensive lineman to hold him back which will free up space for someone else to get through to the QB. And if he does get through to the QB, they’ll have to peel him (the QB) off the turf WB cartoon style before they can send out the back up, and he won’t want to go!
September 16th, 2025 at 7:47 pm
Would love to see him do the ‘feed me ‘ celebration after a sack!
September 16th, 2025 at 8:04 pm
Talib was over rated not listening to anything he has to say. Speaking of special teams any word on them trying out a new Kicker. We have to have someone reliable and Chase is missing to many kicks.
September 16th, 2025 at 8:11 pm
Who is the most disliked former Bauc player on D, or on Offense? Nominations for Talib, he is a bit offensive but was a D – player.
September 16th, 2025 at 8:27 pm
Rod —
The Falcons unfortunately are a very good team. IMO the Bucs are (were) better, but the gap is small. And their QB is improving, along with a strong run game and a Morris defense.
Next two, against one bottom feeder and one elite team, will tell us a lot.
September 16th, 2025 at 8:32 pm
Adequate depth to offset injuries to starters is the sole responsibility of the GM whether it is by acquisition or what is in your roster. CB position group is far improved and the pass rush when we blitz delivers. Safety play is a huge improve with the combo of Smith and Winfield.
Our Achilles heel has been our special teams whether it be returning, field goal kicking or punting or covering kicks. If you think you can keep missing chippies for 3 and continuing to win-then you are mistaken. Have to see immediate improvement on special teams.

——–
I think right now they’re sort of middling, which to me means they’d be a 8 or 9 win team, but you’re correct, they got a young QB who looks to be really good – and they have all those young guys on defense that are going to be a lot better the second time around. There’s a ton of people in the comments here completely dismissing them, which of course is moronic.
But the Bucs right now are winning despite a lot of injuries, and if they can keep things together until the calvary arrives (at least on offense), they should be in really good shape down the stretch.
September 16th, 2025 at 9:08 pm
Bucs D looks better than last year. They didn’t allow Atlanta to torch them like they did both games last year and were more than solid against the Texans after allowing early success to both teams (something the Bucs D does year after year before figuring things out).
The offense is what looks worse. The injuries to the O-line may be a major part of that. Missing two of your top four receivers doesn’t help, either.
Don’t even get me started on the special teams!
September 16th, 2025 at 9:21 pm
Bucs = D. Time to start busting some Trolls!
September 16th, 2025 at 9:36 pm
Agree. Something is missing for Nucs defense.

The Bucs are a DC guru away…
Eagles, Lions, Packers and Rams likely light up the Bucs defense …
Bowels is the Bucs greatest weakness….
September 17th, 2025 at 12:01 am
I’ve just rewatched the two victories of 2025.
In the Falcons victory, we got lucky that Koo and Chase go to the same bar or bath house or whatever. Their incompetence canceled each other out and we got the win for playing better overall over the course of the game.
In the Texans victory, same old let them score a TD on the first drive so “we can see what we have in Trask” except on their offense, then tighten it down. Well, the defense really did clamp down pretty well, Special Bus teams and coach (who should be unemployed right now) tried to gift wrap it for the Steers (nice name Joe).
Perhaps the most true genius thing Todd’s ever done was after the long PR against the worst special teams unit in the league, Todd realized he had saved his timeouts and said “We let them score here, we need a TD so I won’t be tempted to put in the Yipping Kicker. Let’s do it.”
Truly genius. That had to be a Todd ordered thing. My fave decision he’s ever made.
I mean that sincerely. That was brilliant.
