Todd Bowles Talks Teddy Bridgewater Role

August 16th, 2025

So the first-team offense minus Mike Evans and Baker Mayfield were on the field tonight with a surprise starter throwing the ball.

Joe asked Todd Bowles about his decision to start veteran Teddy Bridgewater at quarterback over Kyle Trask, the guy the Bucs said two weeks ago is their No. 2 quarterback.

“Yeah, we wanted to see him in action. That’s by no means a demotion for Kyle [Trask]. But we wanted to see him play; we didn’t want to see him play in mop-up time,” Bowles replied. “So we wanted to put him out there and see him and see where he was. And he did a good job.”

And the Bridgewater performance after being signed in early August?

“That’s pretty good. I mean, that’s pretty good,” Bowles said. “For only being in there 12 days is another reason we wanted to put him out there early — with guys that knew what they were doing. So, he did a great job. He threw two great passes.”

Joe followed up to ask Bowles if he would keep three quarterbacks on the roster. “Don’t know yet,” Bowles replied.

Joe’s starting to wonder whether Trask will clear waivers.

    Welcome to the Bay TB16!!

  2. Mac Says:

I think Trask me but cut or send to practice squad if willing myself. They can’t keep 3 qbs. Trask look horrid tonight even though it wasn’t all his fault as the 2nd team O line as Joe has mentioned in his practice notes many times hasn’t looked good.

Licht better find some guys to add depth to that Oline. We are an injury away in that area from being in some big trouble.

  3. Mac Says:

Also Teddy had 2 good throws on the TDs but otherwise looked very meh to me. Team needs to keep Baker healthy.

  4. Ex Browns Fan Says:

    Coach TB
    Quarterback TB
    City TB
    Greatest Bucs quarterback TB
    I sense a pattern here

  5. Stylez05 Says:

Is Trask just not allowed to play with starters or what?

  6. KABucs Says:

    Well, starting QB is BM.
    Not a great abbreviation IMO.
    LOL

  7. KABucs Says:

    Love Baker either way

  8. Bakerfan Says:

2nd team oline and Trask was not playing against Pittsburgh starters, so I think Trask plays down to his competition Not a good look

  9. LetsBucinGo Says:

If we keep three QB’s, Trask should not be one of them. He’s a waste of space on an NFL roster.

  10. Aqualung Says:

I saw some really great tackling by that defense in the 4th quarter. Looks like that focus on the fundamentals Todd preaches about is really paying off.

    Oh, wait.

  11. View from 132 Says:

Watched football a long time. Never saw a 3rd string QB with starters. Almost killed a WR. This decision was highly, highly questionable.

  12. Mac Says:

Agree View. No reason to risk your starters with a guy who has 1w days of practice. Like what was he thinking? I’d just rather the starters never play in the preseason period! Nothing to gain from it.

  13. Aqualung Says:

Gents – Bucs don’t have a real head coach. It’s that simple. We don’t have a real defensive coordinator either. So, there is that.

  14. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

If Bake ever comes out of the gsme for any reason, TB will be the guy who goes in for him.

Teddy is a #1b QB and Trask is a backup/ emergency QB.

  15. Scott Says:

That was a good game for Teddy. He is fun to watch. It looks like he still has it. His stats may not historically show it but he is a solid QB. And pretty consistent.

  16. Bucfan1988 Says:

I wonder if Trask is EVERRRRRR going to get to have snaps behind the FIRST TEAM O-LINE????

Last week was 2nd team O-line…
    Tonite was 2nd & 3rd team O-line…..

For some idiotic reason, Bowles decides to give Bridgewater ALL of the 1st team O-line snaps…Teddy played OK with a couple of good throws..

Trask then comes in, and he’s running for his life. Pass blocking was absolutely PUTRID….

Now everyone saying Trask had a bad nite 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️…
How can you do anything when you’re running for your life every play??
Dudes were getting beat left & right tonite..

This coaching staff 5 YEARS LATER still has minimal tape to see if Trask is a gamer when the lights come on behind a good 1st team O-line..

    It’s crazzzzzzy !!

  17. Trask To The Future Says:

You should have asked Todd Bowles…

“Isn’t just a little strange that you won’t let Kyle Trask play behind the starting O-Line? Rarely practice, never in mopup time in real games, and never in preseason once in his entire career. Not ONCE. Why???”

  18. Bucfan1988 Says:

    Trask To The Future…….

    FREAKEN EXACTLYYYYYYYYYY!!!

I just wanna know if the dude can play meaningful snaps when it matters…

What the hell won’t Bowles give Trask some legit playing time….

So help me, if they decide to cut him without getting answers going on YEAR 5, I hope he gets a chance somewhere, becomes a starter and becomes a star…
Bowles would deserve that embarassment 🤷🏻‍♂️..

For gods sakes, just see if Trask is a gamer or not!!
If not, move on, and make your appropriate QB adjustments to solidify an appropriate backup for Mayfield.

  19. HC Grover Says:

    Bowles set Trask up.

  20. HC Grover Says:

The TD passes were classic Bridgewater Bloopers.

  21. Trask To The Future Says:

People are talking about it on X how it’s a joke that Bowles has never given Trask a chance to play with the starting O-Line.

  22. Teacherman Says:

Teddy was a first round pick.

Teddy has started a ton of games.

    Trask is awful.

We need to keep 2 QB’s. We are too deep at WR and CB to waste a roster spot on a 3rd QB.

The post Super Bowl was the worst draft ever.

    I wanted a JPP backup. A Suh backup. A LG/C.

We got Trask, Hainsey and Darden.

    Worst draft ever.

  23. LakelandSteve Says:

After just a few practices I thought he did an excellent job.

  24. Baking with Grizz Says:

A lot of Trask passes looked late. The receiver would get the ball with the defender ready to pop them. He has a slow release. Is either that or he is having difficulty with knowing where his read will be. I wish him the best but this is his 5th year. SMH

  25. Ringer Says:

Here the team has great momentum and Mojo so far this training camp and preseason. Trask coming off of a very good week one performance. Then Todd decides to kick Trask in the groin and everybody knows it. Finally he has a chance to play with the ones with really good receivers and a good offensive line but no, let’s give it to the guy who is out of football for a f’ing year and has bounced from team to team for years. You don’t think that affected him as well as having to play behind that o line? Right when I was warming up to Bowles he pulls this.

  26. Beeej Says:

I kept seeing the middle of the line get blown up, hard to deal with that

  27. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Clearly this coaching staff has no trust whatsoever in Trask

  28. Lynchmob47 Says:

I was feeling good about the bucs for this season. Down CD and now JM all because of Toliet Bowles. Some people are just not great thinkers and worse decision makers…it’s time to flush the bowl. It was time 3 years ago…and just cause you sqeak into playoffs consistently why aren’t we just outright winning it…cause of bowel…we can blame the players but that is not correct. A great leader would be accountable for everything under him. Toliet Bowles is a nice guy but her is not a great leader and definitely not a great head coach.

  29. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Trask starts last weeks game with some of the starting, OL and looks good.

Bridgewater starts this weeks game with starters from the OL, looks good.

Teddy just got here last week. Trask has been here for some time.

You’re not going to be able to evaluate Teddy playing behind 2nd & 3rd stringers nor do you want to risk his health.

Not rocket science, we know what we have with both should either have to play behind our starting OL now.

  30. HC Grover Says:

Put Bridgewater in with the scrubs next week and Trask with the starters.

  31. Oxycondomns Says:

trask was given a chance to play with starters when baker went down in practice the other week thats why teddy is here. gator fans are delusional

  32. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

They’ll both be playing with the reserves if Baker plays, because as soon as Mayfield leaves the field the starting OL goes right with him.

Kudos to Grizzard too, called some plays out of empty sets to see how Heck holds up 1 on 1

  33. Hodad Says:

Bucs backup QB situation is puzzling to say the least. I thought it was a mistake not bringing in legit competition for Trask this offseason, Pratt was never it. If the Bucs wanted someone with an actual track record, there were several ways to go. Young guys like Trey Lance, Mac Jones, or older guys like Teddy, or Minchew. Instead they had two Players who never started an NFL game in Trask, and Pratt. Not the way to go. Last night showed who the backup is, Teddy. Oh Kyle, we thought we knew thee well.

  34. Beeej Says:

I expect they will keep 2 on the 53 man roster like last year, 1 on the practice squad. Only question is which one goes practice squad. At any rate, Baker, Trask and Teddy are the 3

  35. BigBucsFan Says:

For everybody trying to excuse Trask for having to play with the second team Bazelek look damn good playing with the third fourth and whoever else might be trying out for the team. Trash looks real good playing with the number ones but that consistency did not show up last night

  36. BigBucsFan Says:

It definitely looked like he was trying too hard, forcing it, trying to make the play happen. Most likely the jitters of having Teddy Bridgewater just sign to the team I’m sure

  37. Marky mark Says:

There should be at least one QB slot for a young project on the practice squad. Some good prospects will be cut around labor day. If the Browns cut Dylan Gabriel i would pick him up. Shadeur is too much of a distraction and should head to Canada where he can be a star in Montreal, Toronto, or Vancouver. Excellent TV commercial actor.

  38. orlbucfan Says:

That’s my one beef with Bowles. I would like to see Trask play some serious plays with the first string Offense. He could have done so last night. So, why not?

  39. Jeffrey Becker Says:

next week you’d think trask gets the first shot, but God knows who’s playing. so convoluted, impossible decision. trask backup, TB an assistant to QB coach who gets converted to player if a QB gets injured? 🙂

  40. Aqualung Says:

You Trask lovers don’t get it. There is a reason “you” haven’t seen what “we” have in Trask. The coaches and managers and player and owners all have!

    He sucks.

They’ve seen what they have in him for 5 years now.

He sucks. His ceiling is Mike Glennon, if Glennon tore a rotator cuff.

  41. Beeej Says:

It’s possible he wanted to see how Trask would fare with pressure in his face. (NOT well)

  42. JD Still Says:

Bucfan1988 writes ,”For some idiotic reason Bowles decides to give Bridgewater all the first team snaps” so, Why would Bowles give all the first team snaps to a retired journeyman quarterback who got fired from seven other teams before becoming a high school coach from which he was also recently fired , to be a the “gifted “backup to Bowles “gifted “starting quarterback, himself a journeyman quarterback, fired from three other teams, before being given the starting position by Bowles two years ago while absolutely refusing to give Kyle Trask any opportunity to develop , even though it is common knowledge Kyle outplayed him during the fake competition. Well, You have to understand the meaning of the term, idiotic. The Mariam- Webster dictionary defines “idiotic” as showing complete lack of thought or common sense along with their derivatives such as ; idiot, imbecile, or moron , now You know.

  43. Durango 95 Says:

“Kyle Trask sucks” he’s been on the team 5 years.. Let that logic sink in.

  44. Bojim Says:

    He just dont like Trask.

  45. Oxycondomns Says:

trask looked like his last bowl game he played, a deer in headlights, in which he got benched in the first quarter, cant handle pressure of a preseason game lol.

  46. buc4evr Says:

Think Trask just doesn’t identify the defensive changes fast enough and still struggles with his progressions. I don’t care what O line is playing, Trask is slow. Let’s see how he plays next week, but right now Teddy looks better.

  47. Tbbucs3 Says:

Funny how the “ playing with backups” excuses only seem to apply to Trask when the offense looks perfect perfectly fine with Bazelok playing with the same guys.

    Trask 3/10 19 yards
    Bazelak 14/18 106 yards

Time to give up on Trask already, its not like this is his first season in the NFL….we’ve seen enough evidence that he’s not good enough and its time to part ways and roll with Teddy as QB2

  48. BucsBucsBucs Says:

Keep 3 QBs!! It’s Super Bowl run time.

  49. Bucfan1988 Says:

    You guys are ridiculous!!

Sitting here saying Trask sucks when you don’t know crap for sure…
    NOBODY does!!!!!

Saying Trask had a chance to play with the 1’s IN PRACTICE!!
Like Allen Iverson said…..”We talking about practice”!!

LET TRASK WORK WITH THE STARTING O-LINE IN A GAME!!!!
Then all these football professors on here can get their answers.

The Joe’s have already been commenting how porous our backups are playing this year. It’s a SIEVE in the middle of the O-line when Trask is in there. You have ZERO time to go thru reads when dudes are immediately in your face. That happened multiple times to him last nite…

Bridgewater had much more time to throw….He didn’t look great. He had 1 beautiful throw in the endzone to Egbuka. He hung McMillan out to dry with the one catch…..

  50. Bucfan1988 Says:

Teacherman on here saying Trask is awful…

Bro, you have no clue what you’re talking about 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️….
Nobody even has an answer to that question, even the coaching staff, until he is put in a meaningful game with the starting o-line and offensive weapons…

This is a total failure on Bowles to not give him this opportunity to see what they have…

TRASK IS THE FIRST QUARTERBACK TO BE SIGNED TO A SECOND CONTRACT IN BUCS HISTORY!!!

Evidently he isn’t awful as Bucs didn’t want him to leave to seek playing time elsewhere…

Is Trask just not allowed to play with starters or what?

    ———————/

They know that the moment Kyle plays with the starters team Glazer will demand that he be promoted to starter.

  52. Kenton Smith Says:

I can explain Teddy Bridgewater role. Backup QB for the Tampa Bay football team.

  53. Aqualung Says:

LOL! You know how we know Trask sucks? Because it’s obvious he has earned his reputation in practice, with and in front of his coaches and teammates, for five years. FIVE YEARS. He couldn’t beat out “Watch Daddy Sling It” and don’t give this crap about Brady wanted a veteran in his ear. He could have had that if Dadsy was inactive, as long as he’s on the sideline.

Reality is, college performance does not equate to NFL performance. Especially with former Gator QBs.

    Trask sucks. This is fact.

  54. Durango 95 Says:

Trask just signed his second contract apparently the team saw enough in him to give him another go around. He played well enough last week to earn another start in pre-season. For the “Trask sucks” crowd is it asking too much to find out with our own eyes why the team has spent so much time, draft capital and money on the guy? Has he ever had two starts in his “FIVE YEARS”? Even in pre-season. Has Bowles and his staff ever developed a QB of their own? Is this another short coming of Bowles and his staff? Not giving him two consecutive starts was a slap in the guys face by Bowles. I’m not even a Trask fan but I want to see why they put so much into the guy then run away when they had the chance to give him a genuine shot. It’s almost like they want to hide away from their own decisons.

  55. TBbolts Says:

Aqualung you’re clearly still touched from Trask cooking whatever college team you root for. Pretty sad. Let it go. Trask has collected millions and hasn’t suffered any injuries while doing it. He’s doing well. Bucs resigned Trask so your comment makes zero sense. You’re just an angry sad Gator hater.

  56. Durango 95 Says:

This really bugs me. Has there ever been a QB drafted in the 2nd round that outside of injury that has not been given two consecutive starts with the starters in the pre-season? There may have been one. But the point is clear. Why is it that yet another pre-season comes and goes and Trask still has not been given a clean look with the first team starters. The Trask fans are right. In that regard he has not been treated fairly. In the mean time Teddy walks in the door and gets handed the keys to the castle. What sort of Mickey Mouse, baloney bull s(p)it is that! Doesn’t Trask at least get that much? Even starting last week he didn’t have the same amount of starters that Teddy did. WTF is going on down there. We’re supposed to listen to JBF for evaluation? Are you kidding me. The same media outlet that has been giving Trask short-shrift since he walked in the door. No. Fans and Trask deserve better than that.
