Todd Bowles Says Adding A Quarterback Could Still Be On The Table

August 27th, 2025

Wants to move past Cutdown Day.

Joe mentioned this briefly yesterday, but it’s time to flesh it out a bit.

This week has been rough for Gators Kyle Trask fans after the team decided four seasons and five training camps was ample time for Trask to develop into a capable backup for a team with high goals.

Trask was released and in his place, veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was knighted as the Bucs’ No. 2 quarterback behind Baker Mayfield.

On Tuesday, Joe asked head coach Todd Bowles if the Bucs are interested in adding a quarterback from outside One Buc Palace to the roster. Many players were officially released yesterday as NFL teams had to whittle down rosters to the league-mandated 53.

Bowles seemed like he had bigger fish to fry than to sift through dozens of potential quarterbacks to sign for a No. 3 gig or a practice squad player.

“Yeah, it’s a long day,” Bowles said. “You know, we’ve got to see what’s available. We know what we have. We’ve got to see what they go up against and what we go up against as well. So, it’s going to be a long day as far as who we keep and who we don’t keep and that won’t be determined till tomorrow.

“There’s still a long way to go in this process.”

Joe’s willing to lay cash the Bucs will bring in someone from outside the building, quarterback, offensive lineman, inside linebacker, safety. There’s no telling who Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht may sign before preparations for Week 1 at Atlanta begin in earnest.

“This Joe” believes if the Bucs do sign any quarterback, it would be wide receiver Garrett Greene, who the Bucs sent packing yesterday.

Greene smells like the perfect practice squad guy. He can play receiver — he showed some promise — but he can also be a scout team quarterback because he was a QB at West Virginia.

Greene could fill two practice squad positions, both receiver and quarterback. And as receiver Ryan Miller has proven, just because one is on the practice squad doesn’t mean he will never get a promotion.

Wolford? He has been here before.

  2. OR Buc Says:

    How about Cutlets?

  3. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I hate it when someone is a fan of a player, it is because of the school they attended. Not all of us care about college football.

  4. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    When people assume, I meam.

  5. Rod Munch Says:

Oh wow… I get it now, Brady is about to unretire!

  6. MadMax Says:

    Dorian Thompson-Robinson? I mean, he’s another Brown’s reject….put him on the practice squad….

  7. dmatt Says:

I thought Garrett Green should’ve made the team. He was consistent throughout training camp. I was all in on Kam Johnson last year n earlier this year but he’s been inconsistent with questionable hands. Objectively, I thought Kam should’ve been released n Garrett retained. Garrett plays as if he has a chip on his shoulder. He plays hard, tough, n determined, sort of like a Danny Amendola n Julian Eldeman. Bring him back on the practice squad.

  8. Mhystc Says:

I don’t know how Kam Johnson, made the team over Greene. Kam has heen super inconsistent and is always injured. That was a head scratcher. I guess since he had one good return ?

  9. HC Grover Says:

The QB Follies continue. Good Grief. This is going to bite Bowles in his backside.

  10. geno711 Says:

I get the Garrett Green love — but the Bucs have been very specific this year that some of those last spots are going to special team’s players, so Cam Johnson makes sense.

I don’t get the folks acting like Trask was clearly better than Bridgewater — really all evidence is to the contrary. The only thing Trask has over Bridgewater is that he is younger — nothing else.

  11. First Last Says:

Everyone is sleeping on Garret Greene but he could be a trick play type of guy

  12. heyjude Says:

If it happens, thinking the Bucs will go for someone younger as another backup QB and that can be guided by Baker and Teddy. Two awesome QBs to mentor under. No to Wolford. He will be turning 30 in October and has been here before.

  13. Durango 95 Says:

People still unable to grasp that this is not so much about the player or the school. But more about the way this HC has handled a player, a QB that cost this team valuable draft capital and the head coach’s responsibility, and ultimate failing in developing a valuable position that he hasn’t ever been able to ever do before. Add in the deceitful manner used to cover his own failings. No matter how many times it gets written the standard response is “Trask sucks”. Devastatingly insightful. Eye roll

  14. JD Still Says:

Maybe we could bring a new head coach, that’s by far the weakest position we have and the position of greatest need.

  15. heyjude Says:

JD – Respectfully disagree about Bowles. He has done well. We could bet that there are other teams that would take him in a NY minute if he was let go.

  16. Curse of Gruden Says:

Time to bring back Jameis. He can be in charge of the pregame speeches.

  17. Bill in Seminole Says:

If he clears waivers, bring back Kyle Trask. He knows the playbook and can step in if needed.

  18. D-Rome Says:

People still unable to grasp that this is not so much about the player or the school.

Except in this instance it’s definitely about the school. If Trask graduated from Eastern Illinois then no one would care he was cut. He had plenty of opportunities to show he was ready to take the next step. He didn’t.

  19. orlbucfan Says:

I hear ya, heyjude. The usual Bowles’ bashing makes it sound like the Bucs were 2-15 the last 4 years. It’s bor–ing.

  20. Robert Says:

Tyler Huntley, you heard it here first.

  21. Robert Says:

Everyone bi**hing about the Bucs. How would you like to be a Saints fan with Spencer Rattler as your starting QB? That’s the best they could do? SMH

  22. heyjude Says:

    True that, orlbucfan!

Robert, that is interesting. To be honest, I don’t know much about him. But the Browns got rid of Baker so their decision making isn’t too good. Luckily we got Baker and they got stuck with what’s his name… And he isn’t on their team now.

  23. Mveal2006 Says:

I get the logic but this trask thing is emotionally painful on par with the decision to fire Tony dungeons for me. Sometimes you just like someone, this guy was about all tge gators had since tebow left other than lagway. Fir him to nor do well really bites

I also am weary of anyone saying Clyde Christiansen is a qb guru. Tom Brady made him look good, but he cost dungy badly.

In the end dungy outsmarted everybody by pulling off the Colts deal.

Looking forward to trask doing g tge same. Just not to us.

  24. SlyPirate Says:

Trask is still the only drafted QB to earn a second contract. $1.2M of his $1.7M was guaranteed.

  25. Oneilbuc Says:

Bowles will try to get Ryan Fitzpatrick back or Blaine Gabbert that’s the kind of coach he is 😂 . Baker Mayfield aka Alex Smith will have a good regular season and choke in the playoffs.
