Todd Bowles On Kyle Trask: “It Was A Good Four-Year Run”
August 26th, 2025
“Hang in there, Kyle.”
Backup Bucs quarterback Kyle Trask is gone but not forgotten.
The Bucs launched Trask yesterday after expressing their strong belief in him with a new contract in March and by not signing another quarterback with experience before training camp.
At some point, that confidence eroded and veteran Teddy Bridgewater was signed three weeks ago. At the time, the Bucs brass insisted Trask was the No. 2 QB and the move was no reflection on Trask. Joe’s not sure anyone believed it, but that was the company line.
Today, head Todd Bowles sounded like a guy sure Trask’s Bucs’ future is over.
“It was a good four-year run. You know, we just feel like we got a better chance with Teddy,” Bowles said of Trask.
Asked about Trask being a practice squad candidate, Bowles wasn’t upbeat. “Things we’re still discussing. I mean, [summer No. 4 QB] Connor [Bazelak] did very well as well. We also like him, too,” Bowles said.
Joe asked Bowles if the Bucs would possibly sign an additional QB, and Bowles said that’s on the table.
Rough day for Trask and his fans.

“Things we’re still discussing. I mean, [summer No. 4 QB] Connor [Bazelak] did very well as well. We also like him, too,” Bowles said.”
That has to be the deepest cut (and I am not talking about player cuts).

Well, they see stuff we dont. I thought he did alright as a #3 backup from what I saw in preseason games. But if its a shoulder injury that has something to do with this decision, then I understand a little more.
Looks like atlanta is keeping Cousins.
August 26th, 2025 at 2:32 pm
Greene to the practice squad.
August 26th, 2025 at 2:39 pm
Teddy don’t even want to play lol. Teddy will be hurt in no time but hopefully baker don’t miss a game this year. Glad Trask got cut tbh, hope he goes to another team and does well and gets a chance one day
August 26th, 2025 at 2:40 pm
I don’t feel bad for KT2. He did have a good run. He made more money in those 4+ years than almost every one on this blog and he wasn’t hit repeatedly,17 weeks straight, by 280 lb DL men or speedy linebackers either. His future is in his own hands now. Show a team your worth signing or call it a day.
August 26th, 2025 at 3:05 pm
Idk,
Joe(s) previous article got over 240 comments and counting on cutting Trask.
In one sense I feel bad for the guy…. No one that gets drafted in the 2nd round thinks they’ll never see the field. Hope runs high for these guys and they’ve been told, by their coaches, family and draft selection that they have what it takes to play in the NFL. Sounds silly and a bit sappy. But I feel for the guy.
That said, he made more money in those 4 years than some of us will ever see in a lifetime both knees still are still working.
I wish him the best.
August 26th, 2025 at 3:19 pm
I have a feeling that if the Bucs fail to go further into the playoffs this year, and/or if they miss out on a spot altogether, the Glazers will be saying “it was a good 4 year run.”
August 26th, 2025 at 3:28 pm
Trask, good teammate, good man. Just not a NFL caliber QB. Not right. Ow, at least.
August 26th, 2025 at 3:32 pm
I like Trask.
I like Licht.
Licht deserves a lot of credit for his management of the draft to continuously restock the team with affordable talent.
But, Trask was the wrong pick at the wrong spot in the wrong year, and it really cost the Bucs during their limited Brady window.
Licht just blew that pick all around. No second round pick was going to carry the Bucs in the playoffs – it was Brady or Bust.
There were a lot of busts and mediocrity in the dozen or so picks that followed Trask. But, the Bucs could have at least taken a shot at someone who could bolster the team quickly as the Brady clock wound down.
August 26th, 2025 at 3:33 pm
as a second round pick… It was NOT a good 4 year run.
August 26th, 2025 at 3:39 pm
I wish the organization was as critical of Bowles and his pass defense, clock management and player utilization as they are of players performance.
So odd to hold the Head Coach to such a low standard and the players to such a high standard
August 26th, 2025 at 3:54 pm
Well, no GM picks in a vacuum. He talks it over with the Head Coach and trys to get him what he wants/needs for the team. In 2021 it was still Bruce Arians, with the “sling it deep-no risk it no biscuit” offense. So this pick made sense in view of what Kyle Trask did in college.
However, in 2025 – not so much. The league and the coaching staff has moved away from this to the Sean Mcvey short to intermediate passes with lots of pre-snap motion that gets the ball in the hands of playmakers. And RPO plays. This is not KT2’s strength.
To be fair, our new OC likes to sling it deep more often – but most of the time stick to having the QB be a point guard. This is perfect for the starting personnel – Baker to Tez or Evans or Egbuka or Godwin. Kyle just does not fit this type of scheme. And frankly I do not know any teams that do any more.
August 26th, 2025 at 4:02 pm
Blah blah blah. Bridgewater was QB2 soon as he signed.
August 26th, 2025 at 4:03 pm
ROFL….Another 1st magnitude Bowels Blunder. Routine Bucs Par.
August 26th, 2025 at 4:05 pm
First there was the Hula Hoop….Then now The Bilgewater Blooper……
August 26th, 2025 at 4:07 pm
Someone had to replace Plan 9 from Outer Space. HAHAHA
August 26th, 2025 at 4:10 pm
When they fire Bowles you won’t hear that well it’s been a good 4 years, true fans will celebrate. He is a joke and a imposter as a head coach. Something must have happened between him and trask because it doesn’t matter how well trask played during preseason he would not give trask credit. Always when he was asked about trask making great throws and smart decisions he had something down to say. Bowles has let his personal feelings make a decision on trask
August 26th, 2025 at 4:14 pm
Hope he lands with a team and a coach that will help him develop his game. Many players have benefited from a change of scenery. He was surrounded by some great players and great people.
August 26th, 2025 at 4:18 pm
IF BOWLES LOST TRUST IN TRASK AFTER THAT “ONE PRACTICE” WHEN BRADY WAS ON A BREAK… THEN WHY DID THEY RESIGN TRASK THIS YEAR?
Something doesn’t add up.
You don’t resign a guy and bring him back as your #2 QB if you lose trust in him or think he’s not a good QB. There were plenty of decent backup QBs on the market this offseason and plenty of draft prospects this year.
Bowles did Trask dirty, plain and simple. He was setup to fail. I stand by that.
August 26th, 2025 at 4:22 pm
It’s probably just no significant improvement in 4 years!
August 26th, 2025 at 4:24 pm
A liar and a hypocrite, the only good thing to be said when this incompetent pretender is fired will be goodbye.
August 26th, 2025 at 4:27 pm
I will never understand how anyone is ok with drafting a QB and never giving him a real chance to succeed. The hate for Trask though just shows how scared Baker fan boys were of him. They love Teddy because he challenges absolutely nothing. It’s like a sigh of relief for them.
August 26th, 2025 at 4:33 pm
Trask to the Future — i thought you indicated you were done with the Bucs —
If not maybe in the next couple of days offer something besides your disappointment that Trask is no longer with the Bucs and some conspiracy theory that Bowles did Trask dirty.
For all that Bowles may or may not be — the guy has always been appreciated by the men who play for him.
If you have something real to offer other than unfounded speculation on the subject — now would be a time to start.
August 26th, 2025 at 4:33 pm
I believe Trask’s Contract had $ 1.3 Million Guaranteed at Signing. OTA’s started in late April and August he was let go. $81250 a week for 16 weeks. Not Bad at All.
August 26th, 2025 at 4:37 pm
Many good points made in this thread. Fans are fed up with Toxic Todd and his lying ways.
August 26th, 2025 at 5:06 pm
Was 2021 the worst draft that Jason Licht ever had? Possibly somehow even worse than 2016?
Look how awful it was:
Rd1 – #32 – OLB Joe Tryon-Shoyinka
Rd2 – #64 – QB Kyle Trash
Rd3 – #95 – OL Robert Hainsey
Rd4 – #129 – WR Jaelon Darden
Rd5 – #176 – LB KJ Britt
Rd7 – #251 – DB Chris Wilcox
Rd7 – #259 – LB Grant Stuard

Gators fans having a tough morning it seems.
August 26th, 2025 at 5:17 pm
Trask had a tough time, I’m not sure they ever thought his development was important. Feel for him, although, as many have said, he did pretty well financially these last 4 years.
I thought Trask would be a smooth transition plan post Brady. Mayfield was a way better plan. Biggest difference between Trask and Mayfield? Heart and between the ears.
August 26th, 2025 at 5:31 pm
Geno711,
I never said I was done with the Bucs. I’m one of the biggest Bucs fans on this site. Been a fan since the team started, I was at our first Super Bowl win in San Diego in 2003, and have been and will remain a diehard Bucs fan for life.
So you must have me confused with someone else.
Bowles isn’t above criticism and he’s certainly been a weak coach in many areas including the Trask situation. I call it like I see it.
August 26th, 2025 at 6:07 pm
Trask will now be the answer to a Bucs trivia question for years to come: ……Who was the only QB the Bucs drafted to receive a second contract.
August 26th, 2025 at 6:18 pm
Only problem I have with Bridgewater is he was sitting on his couch at home when Bucs called. He’s no youngster, and he didn’t sound all that impressive in the preseason game he played. Baker is feisty and gutsy and will put it on the line. He gets hurt, then what?
August 26th, 2025 at 6:23 pm
trask will most likely retire with his last start being a game he threw 3 ints in the first qtr vs the sooners. licht conducted that years draft from a local wing house
August 26th, 2025 at 6:59 pm
Damn, I forgot how bad 2021 the draft was. They missed on everyone except Hainsey.
August 26th, 2025 at 7:27 pm
Thinking Baze looked better than Trask.
Also think Shane Beushele looked awesome..
Fresh from Buffalo, he played like a pro..
August 26th, 2025 at 7:40 pm
Orlbucfan, TB is the perfect backup for this offense. He is mentally sharp, he has a lot of NFL experience. He can help in the QB room meetings and on the bench during games. He can go into a game and run the offense effectively. He might not have the strongest arm but this offense did really well with short to medium range passes last year. He is an upgrade over an unknown, that’s why he is here.
August 26th, 2025 at 9:15 pm
Another Licht special. Wasted 2nd rd pick.
August 26th, 2025 at 9:30 pm
The Bucs management, including Bowles and JL, have no ability to draft or develop QBs. Trask, like Doug Williams and Steve Young, now leaves the Bucs looking like an underachiever. Like those 2, Trask, could end up winning a SB while Bridgewater will be coaching highschool football in a few months. Bad decision by the Bucs but good for Kyle Trask.
August 26th, 2025 at 10:24 pm
It was I guess someone that utilized a part of your name. My mistake

I’ve been a Bucs fan since 1987.
That ended today.
Screw you Todd Bowles.
August 26th, 2025 at 10:29 pm
When trask gets a chance somewhere due to injury etc, we can judge him better.
Spurrier precursor used to come off tge bench and win but never hor a chance. It happens like that sometimes
August 26th, 2025 at 10:40 pm
Imagine if Licht treated Bowles like Bowles treated Trask:
JL: we are bringing in Tony Dungy as an assistant HC to use his experience on how to better coach our team.
Q: Does this mean Bowles will be demoted?
JL: Not at all. Just trying to bring in more experience.
JL: For just the next game we are letting tony have a go at HC, just to see what he can do.
Q: What did you learn from Tonys stint at HC and the win?
JL: He looked very good but thats no reflection on Todd, he is still the HC.
Q: Now that Bowles returned as HC and got the win, what can you say about him?
JL: Well the win wasnt really due to Todd, it was the amazing play of Tez and our punter. Also the other coaches did a great job.
JL: We have decided to promte Tony Dungy to be the new HC since Todd got injured on the sidelines in the last game.
Q: What about Bowles future?
JL: Its been a good 4 year run. We might let him stay as a coaching assistant but we also have Teddy Bridgewater who has recent coaching experience at highschool, so lets see.
August 26th, 2025 at 11:02 pm
Unbeleiveable: I think the 2016 draft was worse for the following reasons. In 2021 the Bucs had busts with JTS and Trask in the frist 2 rounds while in 2016 there were 3 busts in the first 2 rounds: VH3, Spence and the FSU kicker Aguayo. Plus in 2021 the Bucs had one decent pick; 3rd rounder Hainsey who was not what I would call a bust; he certainly could not fill Jensen’s shoes at center but he did okay when Barton was out. Mediocre starter, solid bench player and good enough for Liam Coen. In 2016, the Bucs did not have one single decent pick. 2021 was a horrible draft but 2016 was worse.
August 26th, 2025 at 11:14 pm
I have nothing against Trask and I hope he has a great QB career, if that’s in the cards, and a great life, regardless. What I don’t get is the conspiracy theories. Do you people honestly believe that an NFl coach is going to deliberately hurt his chances of winning games and SBs? If Bowles thought Trask was the Bucs’ best shot at a Lombardi, Trask would be starting. If he thought giving Trask reps with the first team would win more games, Trask we could have gotten the reps. He got four years of chances to make his case in practice and, right or wrong, Bowles didn’t see what he was looking for. So it goes.
August 26th, 2025 at 11:29 pm
Good luck to Kyle! I followed baker here from Cleveland, Maybe the Task fans Can follow him to the Canadian football league. He’ll do well there.
August 27th, 2025 at 8:35 am
The reality is and it’s a hard reality for the Trask boys, there are hundreds of quarterbacks every year that dream of playing in the NFL. There are only 32 quarterbacks that start and play regularly. Out of those 32, 20-25 maybe are the real deal. There is a real drop off from those 20 to the other 12 and there is a HUGE drop off when you look at the second string. Playing quarterback in the NFL is one of those talents only very few in the world can do at a high level and Kyle Trask just isn’t one of those persons. For all the bad mouthing of Todd Bowles that has been done and now we all find out the truth, it wasn’t Todd’s fault at all, Kyle just isn’t one of those persons. He doesn’t possess the necessary skills, period. Move on to the next issue.
August 27th, 2025 at 9:05 am
It is rare that a poorly ranked head coach ever wins a superbowl. Most coaches who win are ranked within the top 10. Todd is currently ranked 27th. I’m not saying it won’t happen. I’m just saying it’s rare.
