Todd Bowles Likes Where Bucs Are

August 27th, 2025

Praise for adult approach.

So after today, Todd Bowles will give the Bucs a few days off and they’ll be back to work on Labor Day Monday. When the Bucs return, it’s all systems go for Week 1 at Atlanta.

So yesterday, JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman asked Bowles about where the Bucs are after training camp, the worthless preseason and Cutdown Day.

Better than last year, Bowles seemed to indicate.

“Other than injuries, I think it’s been probably better than I expected,” Bowles said. “They came back very professional [from underwear football season]. Even though we had some younger guys come in, they adapted very well. They were more mature from that standpoint with Emeka [Egbuka], [Benjamin] Morrison, [Jacob] Parrish, and [Elijah] Roberts – they were more mature and they came in from day one with a business-like approach.

“That’s how the team has approached it. Maybe with the exception of one practice that we really had to get on these guys, they’ve been professional and intent on what they’re trying to do. I think it’s been good.”

Hopefully, high on that intent list is taking care of business with the Dixie Chicks. It was appalling to lose to that outfit twice last season.

The defense was flat out horrible in Atlanta. It made Kirk Cousins look like Dan Marino. Absolutely pathetic.

Joe expects the Bucs will be dialed in to prevent anything like that from happening a week from Sunday. The Bucs should still have a bitter taste in their mouths from last year’s debacle.

Maybe we can replace bowls with Teddy Bridgewater next year?
    Karma is a b**ch

  2. BucU Says:

Amen Joe! It was that bad! We expect focus, effort and execution at Atlanta on Sept 7th. NOTHING else is acceptable.

  3. D-Mac Says:

Does anyone have faith that Bowles can turn this defense around? I thought good coaches only need a couple of years to fix a unit on the team?

  4. Teacherman Says:

Kirk Cousins is better than Penix.

I’m so happy we will face Penix and not a genius sniper like Cousins.

I think we will shut them out and run for over 200 yards.

Pound the Rock! Like in 2002.

Bucky is ready. White is ready. Let’s run the ball 40 times.

Give Baker the week off. He’s a little rusty.

Let’s run it down their throat!

  5. jimmy Says:

todd just makes sh!t up. all day long. him and the jason.

  6. buc4evr Says:

I just don’t think the Bucs got good enough on defense this year and I don’t see the edge rush vastly improved. I also don’t see mobile QBs having much of a problem getting first downs on this defense. The other thing that is of concern is that Bowles simply won’t change the defensive strategy.

  7. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Bowles wins on opening day. Facts.

  8. Kgh4life Says:

Of course Bowles likes where the team is at currently, he’s not gonna say otherwise. For the Bucs to beat Atlanta, Bowles has to change his defensive strategy, too much zone and not enough tight coverage.

  9. BucsFan81 Says:

Let’s just hope Atlanta really does start Penix and not Cousins who owns the Bucs. You Like That!!!!

  10. JReel Buc Says:

    Fire Bowles !

  11. rrsrq Says:

It will be a close game, opening at ATL, that stadium will be rocking, but I have been there when Bucs fan took over and I expect the same to happen, outnumbered but not outmanned (IYKYK). I think it will take a half to get it going, Bowles second half adjustments on defense and a new play caller jitters will wear off and Bucs win by 7 in the end

  12. Durango 95 Says:

Meet the new defense. Same as the old defense? No, sir! Toxic Todd said he’s got it all figured out.. Woot! Woot! An epiphany, I guess. Fan-freakin’-tastic. I know he wouldn’t lie about that. Time to buckle-up boys.. it is the Bowles defense 2.0. Super Bowl bound, baby!

  13. Baking with Grizz Says:

Healthy Defense – we got this!!!!

  14. Baking with Grizz Says:

    Traskies – B R E A T H E

LETS HOPE A TEAM SEES HIS VALUE.

I wish him the best. And don’t forget either way he is already a millionaire.

  15. First Last Says:

Traskies are on suicide watch. A lot of negativity this week!

  16. orlbucfan Says:

Can it with the-Bucs-are-2-and-15-with-Bowles bloviating. It’s geeing old and stale. This a realistic fan site or not?!? No reason why Tampa Bay can’t beat the Falcons in Hotlanta. It will be a dogfight though. Bet on it!

  17. orlbucfan Says:

    *getting

  18. LakelandBuc Says:

With the Bucs l see a team that’s ( Regressing)
    Not a team that’s (Progressing)

Todd Bowles has to feed the lies to the sheep
The way the Pittsburgh Steelers shutdown the Buck and Tuck show, with their backup defense. The running game looks similar to the run game of 2022. There should be some concern there, but this staff will play it off, as just a worthless preseason game. There’s too many question marks about this team.

There’s no way Bowles and Licht are feeling good about this team
If they are, then, they are as blind as the sheep that believe them

  19. Hodad Says:

Seems first last, and Baking are the only two who’ve mentioned Trask. Everyone else is talking defense. Maybe it’s you that needs to let go.

  20. heyjude Says:

Todd is sounding in-sync, except for the one practice he spoke about. I think there is some discord on the Falcons. Penn-ix will be out there, and nothing but crickets about Kirk. Way too quiet compared to the hype last year.

  21. TanpaBayBucFan Says:

I just want to see our CBs on the line in tight coverage……last year it seemed receivers would be wide open in the middle with 3 defenders never close enough.

  22. KABucs Says:

Was just listening to The Dan Patrick show where he had guest Nick Wright on. Dan talked Nick into giving up his NFC pick when he said he didn’t have the Eagles winning the NFC this year. His pick was the Buccaneers! I didn’t see that coming. He said they couldn’t post it online because he’s releasing it on Friday on his own show. Dan was a little surprised but Nick went on to say it was a mix of the Bake show, the schedule, the depth, the offense and a solid draft.

  23. Saskbucs Says:

A lot riding on Wirfs and Winfield being healthy for the majority of the season. A team isn’t 2 players but I don’t think it can be overstated how important those 2 are to this team winning important games.

  24. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Bucco0i812

    LOL @ “Karma is a b**ch”

So its now considered Karma for cutting a guy who’s not good enough and replacing him with someone better? Traskies really need to learn how the NFL works.

  25. SB~LV Says:

ANXIOUSLY awaiting the practice squad signings!

  26. MelvinJunior Says:

Well, I guess James Pearce Jr. is looking “unblockable” this preseason and is being compared to Jevon Kearse. That is very scary when you add the energy and leadership of Jalon Freakin Walker. I have a feeling those two are going to cause us some big-time TROUBLE, for many years to come. Especially, if Pearce can keep his head on straight. They might’ve hit the damn jackpot with THESE TWO!!!! Gonna be real tough without Wirfs. They will have to account for those two guys, that’s for sure. They both wreck havoc and are super athletic and fast, running guys down making PLAYS all over the field. It’s pretty scary what they could be capable of together, over the next 5-years.

  27. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Some are still have tears in their eyes cuz Trash got cut it seems

  28. Defense Rules Says:

    LakelandBuc … ‘With the Bucs l see a team that’s ( Regressing)
    Not a team that’s (Progressing)’.

    o. 2022: 8-9
    o. 2023: 9-8
    o. 2024: 10-7

For a team that’s undergone a MAJOR renovation since Todd Bowles has been HC, I’d say the Bucs have been progressing better than most of us expected. Only 8 players from the team that finished the 2021 season remain on our current roster, and 2 of them (Wirfs, Godwin) are now injured, 2 more have a significant injury history (Winfield, Dean) with a 5th being 35 years old).

Chin up Lakeland, 11-6 and the NFC South crown is still very feasible. How we fare on injuries this season will be the key.

  29. infomeplease Says:

If this team can get healthy and stay relatively healthy they can do great things!! First things first, go to Atlanta and come back with a W!!!

  30. Couch Fan Says:

Only ones still talking about Trask are the Baker butt Pirates. So insecure over a back up LMAO. As far as the season goes, I am going to have a great time one way or the other. Bucs will be great or I will have a great time calling out the ReTodd. GO BUCS!!

  31. BucsfaninOregon Says:

, Bowles second half adjustments on defense….rrsrq

I’m sorry but, I can’t seem to remember ANY halftime adjustments obviously made by this HC. That is part of the abysmal pass defense. Saw a 49rs game where their DB was standing at line of scrimmage almost touching the WR. Then covered him down the field. The pass did not go to the WR. That is exactly what I would like to see on EVERY short yardage play. Quick pass, WR goes forward for a few yards ~4-5 and FIRST DOWN! Never any adjustments to fix this.

  32. Jmarkbuc Says:

“Good except for injuries “ seriously? Does he not remember last year? Easy to feel good before the games start.

  33. MelvinJunior Says:

“Let’s just hope Atlanta really does start Penix and not Cousins” – BucsFan81.

That’s not even ‘in question’ and has been long settled, since three games left in LAST season. Big Penix is their man.

  34. Couch Fan Says:

Not sure why you would rather have Penix, it’s not like Bowles defenses have been great against young QBs either. LMAO

  35. Defense Rules Says:

Durango 95 … ‘Meet the new defense. Same as the old defense? No, sir! Toxic Todd said he’s got it all figured out.’

Yes I understand sarcasm Durango, but my bet is that you’re more right with your ‘new defense’ comment than you realize right now. Last year we finished mid-pack (#16) on defense, despite the ridiculous number of injuries AND the woeful lack of depth. Plus some guys (like Dean & Winfield) had no business being out there in some games because they were obviously hurting and playing way below their talent level.

Gut feel is that Bowles was shuffling defensive schemes virtually every game just trying to minimize damage. Our defense was quite good in the first part of the season when it was relatively healthy (we went 3-1 with the defense giving up only 19.5 PPG), but it was really sad to watch about mid-season until the Bye (we went 1-5 in those next games with the defense giving up 31.3 PPG). But we finished strong after the BYE (going 6-1 with our defense surrendering only 17.0 PPG average). It’s obvious where injuries & lack of depth killed us.

I’m not very impressed that we only kept 24 on defense yesterday, but I’m convinced that’ll change. We’ll probably add at least 2 bodies and cut 1 before Game 1. Hoping for a beastly NT/DT to rotate in with Vea (Bucs surely won’t stick with only 5 DLinemen), as well as adding another ILB and possibly a Safety. We can hang with any team IF we can stay healthy, but that’s a huge IF in our case.

  36. AK Says:

Defense Rules good points. The Bucs managed to start 3-2 without Kancey last season- hopefully he can stay healthier. Without Dean they were winless, I believe. Obviously his health always will be an issue- as a CB I like him more than most. The depth at CB is certainly better than last year, not sure how people could say otherwise.

  37. Fred McNeil Says:

I’m gonna wait till I see a few games before I get too excited either way. Still, I stand by my prediction of 11-6. As for Atlanta…I don’t have much faith in them. We will be without Wirfs and they will be without their starting right tackle and his backup. Should be some sacks.

  38. alldaway Says:

I think people are overrating Atlanta. If the Bucs show up hungry they win.

  39. Obvious Says:

Imagine getting two monkeys off your back in back to back weeks – Atlanta week one and MNF week 2. All while getting healthy and starting 2-0 on the road.

What a start to the season that would be.

  40. Enkd Says:

All you so called Bucs fans bashing our beloved Bucs team already is pathetic, the season hasn’t even started and Baker hasn’t taken a snap.

All you arm chair bar stool coaches need to calm the F down and give support and positive remarks. You haven’t even seen our starters play an entire game yet and already you guys are already digging a grave. SMH

Ive been a Bucs fan since 76 and this should be a very exciting time like every start of the season is.
no need to bash what you haven’t seen and have no idea how this year’s going to go, so chill, relax and breathe.

    LFG BUCS!!!

    Fire them CANNONS

  41. geno711 Says:

Lakeland Buc with his “sheep” comment reminded me of the old guard—Kobe Faker, El Buco Realisto—those guys always calling people on JBF “sheep.”

They’d look at someone with a slightly more favorable opinion and say, “You’re all sheep!”

Yet, they were less “sheep” than the Todd Bowles trollers. If you’re a guy who takes the time to make the same swipe at Todd Bowles in twenty percent of your comments, you’re not an independent thinker.

You’re a member of a different flock. A flock of angry little rams, all ramming their heads into the same brick wall. And let’s be honest, all that head-butting can’t be good for a man’s general outlook.

  42. MelvinJunior Says:

“Jeffs grandpa” – Kyle Trask has broken your damn brain, Dude… Living inside of there rent free, Buddy LoL. At all times.

  43. MelvinJunior Says:

Yeah, “geno711” – The exact same thing(s) over and over again. Some posters a lot more than 20% too, no matter if it’s even relevant to the current topic at hand. And, this is not only with Bowles… It’s just whatever their own personal ‘trigger’ is. Like, STILL bringing up that Cooper Kupp play from 5-YEARS AGO, & etc. I swear… I wonder if these people must have Tourette’s or something!? Ya know, it’s like this stuff just comes blurting-out!!!! LoL I’m not sure?

  44. Couch Fan Says:

Always a great time when the Pom Pom shakers try to tell others how to be a fan. LMAO

  45. GoneGator Says:

So when someone points out that some commenters post the SAME negative take re: Todd over and over and over and over again, without exhibiting anything more than superficial knowledge of football, they are “pom pom shakers” ?

Couch fan? Like J.D. Vance? 🤣✌🏼

  46. buc4evr Says:

I just want an edge rush at this point and LBs that can tackle. Are Braswell and Reddick for real? or are we going to have to rely on Vea and Kancy for sacks again this season. Any time your DTs have the most sacks your team is in trouble… Hope Todd really has a reason for optimism and it’s not more coach speak.

  47. buc4evr Says:

So Trey Palmer was picked up by the Saints?

  48. Couch Fan Says:

So when someone points out that some commenters post the SAME negative take re: Todd over and over and over and over again, without exhibiting anything more than superficial knowledge of football, they are “pom pom shakers” ?

Yes Pom Pom shakers. Good boy. You catch on fast.

  49. Stpetematt Says:

If penix has a terrible game against the Bucs, how loud do you think the calls for Cousins will be next time we play?
