Teddy Bridgewater Will Start For The Bucs Against Pittsburgh

August 16th, 2025

Starter.

Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht says fans should not read into tonight’s development, but how could they not?

Recently-arrived Bucs quarterback Teddy Bridgewater will start tonight for the Bucs with the first-team offense (minus Mike Evans) against the Steelers in Pittsburgh. It was presumed that No. 2 quarterback Kyle Trask would go in Baker Mayfield’s absence. Mayfield is a healthy scratch after a successful joint practice against the Steelers on Thursday.

Licht told the Buccaneers Radio Network that the team wants to see Bridgewater on the field with the starters and Trask is likely to start next week against Buffalo.

Licht referred to Bridgewater as an additional coach-like figure, and reiterated that the Bucs started talking about signing him in May, so fans shouldn’t think it was a reactionary move in any way.

Joe was never swallowing that whole.

Regardless, Bridgewater has a chance to win the No. 2 job tonight; Joe considers that obvious now.

Like I said, Super Todd has no issue handing jobs out to “his guys”…

  3. Bucs4Ever Says:

    Kyle in trouble

  4. Rod Munch Says:

Trask played pretty great last week, played great in the preseason last year and the year before, and we finally a chance to see some more playing time with Trask with the starting offensive line – and he’s benched for noodle arm Bridgewater? That is unbelievable. I wasn’t on the Bucs hate Trask bandwagon, but now I am. I’m not the biggest Trask fan, but that is ridiculous.

  5. LakelandBuc Says:

If Bucs fans believe what Bowles and Licht say

I can sell them Beachfront property in Idaho

    Lol 😂😂

  6. Irishmist Says:

I’m worried his lollipop throws are going to get our good receivers lit up.

  7. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So, Trask gets no playtime with the starters.

Ah well, time for Teddy to get injured again.

  8. MikeBuc Says:

Bowles want someone he can depend on if Baker goes down. There no question mentally with bridgewater so they want to see if the physical aspects are there

  9. Beefsta Says:

    We shall see.

  10. TBBucFan Says:

Or the take is that Trask has #2 sewn up and they want to see if Teddy has anything left. Have no idea which take is correct.

  11. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Nice, we get the ball first

  12. Mike S Says:

Irishmist – it just happened – that’s why Bowles is an idiot.

  13. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

    McLaughlin sold that well

  14. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Bridgewater to Bucky!!! Holy crap corner fade to Bucky 😂😂

  15. Dom Says:

This coaching staff has absolute contempt for Kyle Trask. They can’t even bother to give him snaps with starters in the pre season. Starting to feel bad for the guy. I’m convinced they’d sign me off the streets if something happened to Baker and Bridgewater

  16. HC Grover Says:

    Trask should demand a trade.

  17. BucVoyager Says:

Trask will be a free agent soon

  18. orlbucfan Says:

What a load of negative hot air. Par for the course. Yeah, I guess this is a Bucs fan site. EE just grabbed a TD from Bridgewater. 14-0 in a “worthless reason game.”

  19. Just Visiting Says:

Everyone is reading bad faith into this, but I think BucVoyager is on the right track. Trask seems to have been playing well and he’s on a one-year contract. The Bucs may expect him to draw serious interest, at a price they won’t match for a backup.

  20. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Problem is Trask isn’t playing well tonight. He’s on the run for his life and making bad throws. Across the field, Skylar Thompson is making lemonade out of lemons most plays.

It doesn’t look good for Kyle. He may be cooked after this game.

  21. LakelandBuc Says:

It looks like TB16 is our QB2

  22. Oneilbuc Says:

Kyle Trask was set up tonight to fail that’s why they Bowles didn’t put him in first. Every player Bowles say he likes always starts if you notice so what happened to Kyle Trask is simply politics. Just like Labron James son getting drafted averaging 6 points a game. And what happened to Teddy with the whole highschool football suspension so they looking out for him.

  23. Erik with Pilot and Driverâ„¢ Says:

Teddy looks like a better QB than Trask.

Trask will be a very good #3 QB behind Bake and Teddy.

  24. Erik with Pilot and Driverâ„¢ Says:

For perspective, the Steelers 3rd-rd pick from last year looks way better than Trask.

  25. Oneilbuc Says:

I hope Kyle Trask just leave or get cut because the bucs destroyed his career . He out played Baker in training camp in 2023 they didn’t take the time out to develop him when Brady was here. And Baker Mayfield got gifted the starting job. I’ve said it before and I will said it again Tampa is where young quarterbacks careers come and die .

  26. BucVoyager Says:

When you get your chance, you make your career. The leagued is littered with guys that got their chance and thrived.

  27. Baking with Grizz Says:

I don’t think Trask thrives tonight. SMH

  28. TDTB Says:

It looks to me that Grizzard isn’t enamored with Trask. Look for him to be traded before the season starts.

  29. Ben the GA Buc Says:

They’ll be lucky to get a 10th round pick for Trask. Someone may need a backup later.

  30. LakelandBuc Says:

I seriously doubt a NFL GM will trade for Trask

Literally none of this is remotely true.

Trask did not outplay Mayfield. And the proof is in the two probowl seasons Mayfield has put up. They made the right choice.

The Bucs don’t have a QB development problem- they have a QB selection problem. All the QBs they draft, suck. Freeman, Jaymiss , Trask- all busts.

The only QB the Bucs let go who went on to become a franchise QB was Steve Young. That’s it. Dilfer, Testaverde and Doug Williams were journeymen.

  32. Oneilbuc Says:

Any players Bowles say he likes they start just look at Dean who as shown he sucks but he keep his staring job.

  33. Greg Says:

If Kyle Trash was our QB the past 2 seasons we wouldn’t have won 8 games total. Bridgewater is obviously a better #2. If you can’t see that, you may just have an issue with….well…I won’t say it

  34. Captahab Says:

I wanted to see what Trask can do with the first string offense, most anyway. The Bucs have treated him like a redheaded stepchild, finally an opportunity to get premo blocking from the first string line and they start Bridgewater. When Trask came in, he was running for his life behind that dreadful back-up offensive line. Poor guy can’t catch a break.

  35. Captahab Says:

Bridgewater is a journey man Qb, he’s bounced around the league for a reason, Started with the Vikings, on to the Saints, Panthers, Broncos, Dolphins and Lions. All those teams let him go, let’s not go overboard with this journeyman, if any good someone would have kept him. I think it was huge slap in the face to Kyle Trask who has showed fairly well with his limited opportunities and while always playing with backups, never, ever an opportunity with the first team offense. Here comes Teddy Bridgewater the ultimate reject project veteran that gets the start with the first team offense.
    Totally ridiculous in my mind.

  36. Brandon Says:

You guys crying about Trask fail to realize that the coaching staff has seen him every day the last four years. They know exactly what he is capable of and that’s exactly why Bridgewater was brought in.

  37. Oneilbuc Says:

Stormy. And all of those quarterbacks you just named won Superbowls and when it comes to the training camp in 2023 even the Joe’s said Baker is starting because of his experience and Bowles wasn’t going to put his job on the line with a quarterback with no experience. Baker Mayfield had 10 picks to Kyle Trask 1 when they made Baker Mayfield the starter and that’s a fact. And the 2 pro bowls he made was because the other quarterbacks opted out. Baker Mayfield has choked in 2 playoff games when the games put in his hands. Just like I said Alex Smith, Tony Romo, Dak all made pro bowls and never played in a conference championship game . Dak 2 years ago was second in the MVP votes and they lost the first round in the playoffs. But I see you are just happy to win barley win a trash division. And the reason why the defense gets blame for the lost against the lions and Washington in the playoffs is because Baker don’t elevate the players around him they elevate him and Trask. That’s why Trask plays good with ones just like Teddy Bridgewater did good yesterday because of the players around them.

  38. Oneilbuc Says:

Brandon. Don’t be fooled by the politics of pro sports bro if Bowles likes you you will be the starter regardless just like Dean who’s never been a good because he’s always hurt and he gets burned every game he plays in. And he will be the starting corner week 1 even though I think Parrish is better than him already. Dean has 7 picks in whole career and he will be out staring corner and he don’t decerved to start but just like Baker in 2023 training camp he will be gifted the starting job because Bowles like them personally.
