Ryan Miller May Stick

August 21st, 2025

WR Ryan Miller might be safe.

Joe wouldn’t be shocked if Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht went out in the next two weeks and found another receiver.

On Aug. 30, a week from Saturday, NFL teams must shave their rosters down to the mandated 53. A day or so later, more shuffling of rosters will take place with a glut of players looking for work. Perhaps a receiver shakes through the cracks?

One Bucs bubble guy Joe thinks will stick is Ryan Miller. A former college tight end, he made the switch to receiver in 2023. He’s got fairly decent hands and caught a dozen balls for the Bucs last season.

At least in training camp, Miller has had a bunch of targets. And as of yesterday, those targets are continuing.

Guys who the Bucs don’t plan to keep don’t get many targets.

In addition, Miller has become a decent special teams player. For non-starters, that’s pretty much a requisite; you’d better be able to play special teams.

And the way Bucs coach Todd Bowles speaks of Miller, Joe has a strong hunch Miller survives the annual arrival of The Turk.

“Ryan is smart, he’s reliable, he’s tough, he has great hands, he’s going to block when you need him to block, he’s going to get open when you need him to get open, he’s a very good special teams player,” Bowles said yesterday. “His confidence has grown from year one until now.

“Coming out of college as a free agent tight end and playing wide receiver, you see the toughness, but his work ethic has changed.”

How did Bowles know Miller has become more serious at his craft?

“I kind of knew he arrived when he cut his hair because he had been walking around a little crazy before, but now he’s kind of settled in and become a little mini vet right now. So that’s a good thing,” Bowles said.

Miller got into 11 games last season. Those 12 catches came on 20 targets and he averaged over 10 yards a catch.

Miller won’t blow up defenses, but Baker Mayfield trusts him. And he can play special teams.

With the Bucs banged up at receiver, Miller seems to be safe.

Just seen from ESPN that Bucs to activate Chris Godwin from PUP list.

Miller is a good possession receiver and will help on third downs? Think Bucs might want to start working Culp out at WR just in case.

  4. Famu_Rattler Says:

I like Ryan Miller. He has shown up in the pre-season. It may be a little tougher in reason Defenses. But I think with the other weapons on the field, he could go unnoticed in his routes. If so, that could be all Baker needs to get down field. Good for you Ryan, hang in there and Good Luck. Go Bucs, Go Bucs.

I agree. Hope the Bucs Coaches are listen to us. We (Bucs Fans) have been saying this all pre-season long. Now it is up to them and Culp to make this work. Okay Delvin, we believe in you. We need you to believe in YOU ALSO !!!!!
    Go Bucs, Go Bucs

    > Tez

  7. BigBoiBuc Says:

Dude is a gritty gamer. Possession guy and special teamer. Has done nothing in this camp but perform at a high level. Hope he makes the 53.

  8. BucVoyager Says:

Probably better for Culp’s career to bulk up more and concentrate on his blocking. He’s not a WR. He’s a very light TE who is fast and can catch.

  9. zzbucs Says:

I like this dude a lot!!!

I would be very happy if he stays on the 53!!!

  10. BucforLife Says:

Ryan Miller > Tez , Palmer, Kam

  11. El hefe Says:

Keep him away from teddy and Logan Hall

Saw that too… wondering if it’s just an administrative thing. I think being on the 53 guarantees a paid contract for vets.

But it doesn’t sound like bad news🙂

    Agreed

  14. LakelandBuc Says:

I think Licht should be focus more on Edge Rushers and ILBS
And people wonder why the offense is always producing.
While the defense stink the field (So they say)

Jason Licht is setting this defense up to fail

There’s way too many question marks on this defense
We’re going into the season relying on a guy that had less than two sacks last season. And the rest of the rotation didn’t do much better

We’re relying on an unproven injury prone ILB as our MIKE
The projected starting ILB has not even participated in Camp

    This is ridiculous

  15. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Undersized college TE at Furman converted to WR as a pro.

Means he’s bigger, stronger, and has more experience blocking than somebody like Tez.

You can tell Trask trusted him in that first preseason game, because he found him a good amount of times.

  16. SB~LV Says:

Ryan has a interview on the official Bucs YouTube channel, it’s on the back half of the interview with Bucky

  17. firethecannons Says:

Guy has great hands preseason game 1 in point

  18. miken Says:

Id like to see green make the practice squad.

  19. First Last Says:

I think he is like the Cade Otton of WR’s. He basically just does everything he is asked and isn’t like an over the top athletic prospect. Now, one thing that others have commented. He basically doesn’t get covered sometimes. Which is why he had I believe two easy touchdowns last year. The unfortunate part is you cannot expect him to beat some players, for instance the Falcons game he gave up an INT which should have been a TD, if I remember correctly. Other than that, I think he makes the roster because he may not be as fast as Trey Palmer, he is more reliable.

Speaking of Trey Palmer, he is making the roster too. Then may become trade bait later in the year.

  20. heyjude Says:

Ryan has been doing pretty good. Rooting for him.

  21. TampaTed Says:

    Miller > Tez

Miller is a tough, gritty player with utility and maturity. Not a showboaty, one-trick-pony like Tez. Oh wait, he showed us in Pittsburgh, he doesn’t even have one trick unless you count going deer in headlights when the ball is coming at him.

    Greene > Tez

  22. garro Says:

I will be shocked if Miller is not on the 53 and in uniform on opening day. I played TE and just the idea of switching to WR is something that blows my mind. Lots more to playing WR in the NFL than just going out for a pass.

    Go Bucs!

  23. BuckyBuc Says:

He is gritty that is for sure.

  24. buc4evr Says:

If I am not mistaken Culp is the about the same size as Evans and is just as fast. He has good hands and would make a good option as a WR if needed in an emergency. Think it would be dumb for the Bucs not to cross train him at WR… just in case.

  25. adam from ny Says:

gotta have a couple guys like this on your team every year…

and a jackson or bullock on defense as well…

it’s good for people to see the “work hard and good things will happen” mentality

  26. David Says:

I assumed Tez and Miller would be WR 6-7 based on what we have seen and heard. Greene & Jarret probably practice squad. Palmer probably cut (3 years and still can’t grasp the offense that well)
I am wondering about Kam. They were very high on him last but he was derailed with injuries.

  27. Gbobucsfan Says:

First, Bowles saying he is more serious because of a haircut….I hope he was joking around.
Secondly, I wonder the learning curve to go from te to wr. Everyone calling for Culp to be a wr. Looks like it took Miller a full year to adjust to that change.

  28. Buckit Says:

Greene just seems to me like someone who can help the team in multiple ways, punt returns, kick coverage, passing game, blocking. He seems fearless on the field, with pretty good speed and athleticism. As a former QB, he could be used for a trick play or two. Unfortunately, the Bucs will likely look first to Tez to make the 53 simply because he was a draft pick. Greene on the PS though at least makes him available when he is needed, and he will be needed at some point.

  29. Bartow Buc Says:

Three words sum it up for #81 Ryan Miller. “Baker Trusts Him” ….. can’t wait to watch him in the regular season!!

    Go Bucs 2025 !!!

  30. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

The new Miller is better than the old Miller.

  31. Boomer Says:

No reason why Miller can’t be our Rod Smith or Drew Pearson…
Besides being undrafted and selected to the hall of fame, both guys had quarterbacks that could throw the ball.

    Go Bucs.

  32. infomeplease Says:

Next man up! Repeating… It’s Miller Time!

  33. Rod Munch Says:

After week 1, he seemed sure to make the team, but then was quiet in week 2. Not sure this 3rd game matters, but I hope he as a nice game to guarantee his spot on the team.

Here’s the depth chart as I see it, they’ll likely keep 7 WRs since Godwin isn’t on the PUP list and will count as a roster spot.

    1. Evans
    2. Godwin
    3. E2
    4. Shepard
    5. Palmer?
    6. Miller
    7. Tez

I still keep wondering if Greene sneaks his way onto the roster. He’s probably way too ‘green’ and will almost certainly end up on the PS, but man, he’s explosive looking every time he gets the ball – and if you only keep 2 QBs, he could be your emergency 3rd QB. But they’ll probably stick with Palmer for now I’d guess.

  34. Jeffrey Becker Says:

we’ll be fine. Otton and White the wideout can fill in even if none of these guys can. embarrassment of riches in the target department.
