Report: Chris Godwin Expected To Start Practicing In Week 2 Of Regular Season
August 21st, 2025
More unofficial chatter.
Perhaps the Jalen McMillan neck injury prompted the Bucs to be more open about receiver Chris Godwin’s ankle situation.
Since Saturday night, receiver has become a major concern for Bucs fans, and presumably the organization.
Godwin has been out 10 months followinng a dislocated ankle. For some players, that’s a 5- or 6-month injury.
Godwin had a second surgery for the injury that may or may not have been planned. Regardless, he told SiriusXM NFL Radio months ago that he planned to be seen practicing in training camp. He hasn’t. McMillan will be out at least through Week 9 of the regular season, Joe can report with confidence.
Today, BSPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported Godwin will be on the Buccaneers’ 53-man roster to start the season and is expected to resume practicing in Week 2 of the regular season. Schefter writes Godwin is unlikely to play until October but the Bucs are pleased with his progress.
Great news, but not the greatest news. Godwin not being able to practice for another 3 1/2 weeks is a good indicator of how far he has to go to be at his peak.
Joe’s major quesiton remains. Will the Bucs go sign a receiver in the next two weeks?

Big tests ahead for CG and JL

Now let’s get the news that Wirfs won’t be on the PUP list.

This has always been my gripe with Godwin….which is no different than Dean. For what they are being paid vs the actual number of games you get from them, they are grossly overpaid. Dean gets hammered for his inability to stay on the field each season yet Godwin gets a pass. They both end up missing when we need them the most which is in the playoffs. If you got 15-16 games from them each season plus they’re available in the playoffs, well worth their contracts but we rarely get that. Should have traded Godwin for picks, he’s got tremendous wear on his body, he’s getting older and yet costing more.

CG got injured on a questionably dirty play and it was ridiculous Coach Bowles had him in the game at that point. I like Coach Bowles, but he seems to have a difficult time making logical coaching decisions.
August 21st, 2025 at 9:55 am
Id still put him on pup
August 21st, 2025 at 9:56 am
HAHA comparing Godwin to Dean please. Godwin shows up every game and is critical to the success we have had. Yea he has had some bad luck with knee injuries but some of that is dirty hits by the Saints and the Ravens. Dean doesn’t do a damn thing and is toast most games and falls down and is injured for weeks on in. You can’t even compare the two. Dean needs to go why they have held on to him for so long yet traded away the other broken glass DB in Davis is beyond me.

Grizzard kind of slipped this up during the Pewter Report Podcast that was recorded yesterday around 7pm I believe. Grizzard was asked something along the lines of how excited he was to get Godwin and McMillan back around the same time, and it was referenced like “the calvary is coming” or something along those lines. Grizzard kind of agreed to the comments which indicate that Godwin/McMillan will be back somewhere along mid-season. Which is good in my opinion because if we get those two back with fresh legs ready around the Bye week, they could be good to go by Week 10. We may be unstoppable at that point and just bulldoze right into the playoffs.

I think my badgering for updates has helped. You’re welcome.
August 21st, 2025 at 10:03 am
Disappointed, not sure why this is happening but he takes many months longer than the average player to heal–ACL injury was the same. He has to be perfect to perform.
August 21st, 2025 at 10:14 am
@Bobby M there is no comparison between dean and Godwin dean fakes 1/2 his injuries when he’s getting beat just to get off the field Godwin is a beast of a DAWG who loves the game and never wants to come off so STTOOOPPPPP already hahaha……….
August 21st, 2025 at 10:16 am
Bobby M
You can’t be serious.
Dean gets a hangnail and he’s out….
August 21st, 2025 at 10:18 am
@Bobby M
are you slow lmao. you cant be serious?
August 21st, 2025 at 10:19 am
Can we all be real here? Why rush Godwin back? Last time he was injured it took 2 years to see the normal Godwin again. Do we all really expect a different outcome here after a SECOND surgery ? We’re bringing a placeholder back early for what? To be reinjured?
We are deep at receiver, split the work load up. Bring Godwin back mid November to help us close out the season and hit the playoffs running
August 21st, 2025 at 10:29 am
Great to hear the mystery is solved. Still concerned and hopefully no setbacks. Maybe Chris first game back in October will be with the Lions or the Saints. Can’t wait for the updates.
August 21st, 2025 at 10:33 am
Whenever we do Chris back at 100%, he’ll be right on time. What’d be awesome for us would be getting Chris & JMac back before the end of October which will be here before you know it. Once the regular season starts time tends to fly by.
Great new for 2 reasons, one we’ll get our best chain moving receiving back and one less thing for JBFers to whine about lol

Pmike who are you to determine when CG is ready to come back? I think I will defer to CG and the medical staff to determine when he will play.
August 21st, 2025 at 11:15 am
He might…MIGHT…be back by week 2. But that doesn’t mean he’ll ever be the same.
August 21st, 2025 at 11:17 am
Woodman Says
“Pmike who are you to determine when CG is ready to come back? I think I will defer to CG and the medical staff to determine when he will play.”
Being ready to play and being the same players are two different things. Pmike made sense when he pointed out:
“Last time he was injured it took 2 years to see the normal Godwin again.”
August 21st, 2025 at 11:18 am
These guys will come back when they come back. The issue is how badly does it affect the outcomes of these first 4 Sept games. I say it’s going to cost us at least 2 wins. And we’re not even thru the preseason yet. Losing Wirfs is the biggest blow. You know and I know that Heck is going to be abused consistently.
August 21st, 2025 at 11:19 am
Ugh, Godwin out at least 3 if not 4 weeks. J-Mac out for half the season at least… everyone better start saying a prayer for Mike’s hamstrings…
August 21st, 2025 at 11:22 am
Godwin will come back and be the same player he was before the i jury never doubt godwin he’s a warrior like jpp
August 21st, 2025 at 11:23 am
Bobby.
Can’t even compare the two 2 players Godwin is a stud when he plays Dean is a bum. McMillan being out for 10 weeks is absolutely ass
August 21st, 2025 at 11:24 am
What an f-ing investment Licht made with Godwin’s contract. I really thought for sure there’d be no way we sign Godwin for $20M per year and he doesn’t start week 1. And now he wont start practicing until week 2!? Wtf. If the Patriots would have beaten us out for acquiring Godwin during the offseason, the media would have been laughing at them.
I love Chris, but no one reading this or any other article on JBF will be surprised if he gets injured again, even as early as this year, call it bad luck, injury prone, or just playing the slot is going to lead to some tough tackles. I just don’t know how that’s money well spent on players that might not be available to help us win a championship. Was there a splash to be made at DE for a $20M per contract? Even a trade and sign? I still say that’s going to be a soft spot for us this season.
August 21st, 2025 at 11:25 am
PFT said October. That’s Week 5 or later.

Zoocomics Says:
“I really thought for sure there’d be no way we sign Godwin for $20M per year and he doesn’t start week 1.”
Sucks to be wrong, aye?
I wish I had been. But if he comes back as good as ever, I’ll be happy. I just have my doubts.
August 21st, 2025 at 11:27 am
Really…Bucs should trade Godwin. They have his replacement.
August 21st, 2025 at 11:38 am
God bless Chris Godwin! Come back when you’re ready! Coming for Pats game. First game after the bye.
August 21st, 2025 at 11:39 am
Bonzai
That’s ridiculous on multiple levels.
August 21st, 2025 at 11:43 am
What wr is out there that is a better deal and or bigger upside than the wrs we currently have? Yeah sucks to not have Mac but we would suck if Evans or Egbuka goes down regardless. If we didn’t sign another wr, what would we do with him when everyone is healthy??
August 21st, 2025 at 11:47 am
jmac is coming back early, six weeks my call
August 21st, 2025 at 12:03 pm
Wirfs and Godwin being on the opening day rosters means it will be difficult to sign anybody, roster spots are tight and there are bubble players the Bucs like. Oh well.
August 21st, 2025 at 12:03 pm
Is Russell Gage available??
August 21st, 2025 at 12:13 pm
Where’s Jeff?
August 21st, 2025 at 12:36 pm
I saw CG got taken off the PUP list today. So that theoretically means they don’t want to keep him on ice for longer than 4 weeks. Kind of close to the October prediction, but regardless, this is somewhat calming news as we wondered about all the secrecy.
Calming? He can’t practice until mid-September? Maybe. One week at a time.–Joe
August 21st, 2025 at 12:41 pm
I can’t see the Bucs signing a receiver when they still have receiver talent on the 90 man team. These young receivers are motivated and willing to go all out.
Go Bucs
August 21st, 2025 at 12:49 pm
Odd that the Bucs signed CG. There were so many solid vet WR in FA last season who didn’t have injuries. I know I’m on an island, but I think they should have let him go to NE.
August 21st, 2025 at 12:52 pm
Week 9 for McMillan to return?
That looks like a typo.
That must have been a really severe neck strain to take three months to recover from.
If it is that bad, he came too close to a permanent career ending and life changing injury.
Helmets should be mounted on a semi-flexible carbon fiber strut supported by the shoulder pads to better protect players from neck injuries and concussions.
And, the crown of the helmet should come with a crumple zone to limit the force transmitted when players strike with the crown of their helmet and to make it crystal clear who to eject from the game and fine in such cases.

I hate being lied to.
August 21st, 2025 at 2:21 pm
It will be good ,,, Godwin and JMac will have fresh legs for the playoff run ,,, at the moment , ME, EE, SS and (Palmer, Greene, Tez) is a perfectly fine group ,,, the problem is once CG and JMac come back , one will lose time as EE will have played so you can’t taken him off the field ,, a nice problem to have
August 21st, 2025 at 2:30 pm
We need him back, but also don’t rush him back – and don’t put him on the field with Hospital Ball Bridgewater.
August 21st, 2025 at 2:57 pm
It is true, some athletes just seem to always get hurt. I don’t know if they were bad in another life and now they have to pay pinence, who knows but it kind of looks like CG was a bad boy. Kidding of course. But seriously, I hope he comes back strong, he is such a big part of our success and a good man on top of that. We have been lucky to watch him when he has been on top of his game.
When they all do get back, it is going to be interesting to see what Grizzard comes up with, how creative he can be with all these talented receivers at his disposal. Hopefully, we will witness the destruction of every defense we come in contact with!!! Especially Washington😡
August 21st, 2025 at 4:46 pm
Joe’s biggest question is how to spell question
August 21st, 2025 at 8:45 pm
I think we’re all in a bit of denial with all of these significant injuries piling up. By midway through the season it will be too late. Personally I think we can’t hold up enough in the first half of the season with all these injuries and by the time these guys just start rounding into form we will be fighting an uphill battle. Just my feelings- hope I’m wrong but we’ll see.
Right now I can see us finishing strong and maybe getting to 8-9
