Jamel Dean Has Two Picks; Todd Bowles Unrelenting In Response

August 6th, 2025

“How you like me now, coach?”

For the interceptions-are-better-than-good-defense crowd, today’s Bucs practice was for you.

Joe has typed several times Jamel Dean has had a solid, if not strong, training camp. Well, today, Dean may have reached his zenith for the summer. The much-maligned corner had a pair of picks against Baker Mayfield during today’s underwear football practice (no pads).

Yes, that’s right. Not one but two.

Both came near the end of practice. In 11-on-11, Dean snagged a Mayfield pass thrown to the left side. Had Dean finished the play, he likely would have had a pick-six.

Later in red zone drills, Mayfield pumped and pumped again before throwing over the middle slightly to the left. Dean skied in the air to grab the ball and pulled it down in the end zone for his second pick.

Last year, when Dean had an interception in training camp, Bucs coach Todd Bowles was so surprised he couldn’t help himself with a fastball right down the middle, vowing to have Dean drug tested.

With two in the bag, Bowles was asked in his after-practice presser if Dean was now allowed to run smack at his coach since he threatened last year to have Dean take a whiz quiz.

“Absolutely not,” Bowles said. “Absolutely not.”

Joe has a hunch Dean will still get in a one-liner or two.

So Tez and Bemo are down with injuries. I was looking forward to seeing them play against the Titians. Coach said Morrison had a hamstring tweek. What’s the deal with Tez?

    Interceptions are good defense!

I agree with Anyhony. Turnovers are a rung below a defensive score and one above recording a sack.

Only the shadow knows. (Bucs don’t release what play was called and who the primary target was for that particular play).

Of course a CB is always going to say he made a great play.

    Mayfield really struggled today.

Unless those first 2 pumps were to different routes then it sounds like the int is on Baker.
