Jalen Ramsey Will Cover Mike Evans

August 14th, 2025

Mike Tomlin speaks.

Fun practice ahead.

Joe is on the ground in Pittsburgh.

The Buccaneers-Steelers joint practice kicks off at 2 p.m. but head coach Mike Tomlin held a press conference long before the start.

Joe learned one of Tomlin’s favorite phrases is “hypotheticals,” which he does not answer, apparently. Joe also liked when Tomlin dropped a “nice try” on a reporter.

One thing Tomlin did talk about was legendary cornerback Jalen Ramsey being annointed to cover Mike Evans in practice. The Steelers traded for Ramsey this offseason. Tomlin had a smile in his eye and noted other Steelers corners probably wanted that assignment.

As for what might happen in Saturday night’s preseason game, well, that’s a hypothetical, so Tomlin wan’t really talking about that.

Tomlin added that the Bucs are one of very few select programs Tomlin would consider scrimmaging against. He’s shunned joint practices for years but had one last year with the Bills. Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott and Tomlin were college teammates, per Tomlin’s comments today.

Stick with Joe into the evening for your need-to-know in Pittsburgh.

Ramsey will *try* to cover Mike Evans. There, fixed it. 🙂

  2. No Mercy Says:

Love Mike Tomlin hope our boys put out a good practice and both teams can get better before the season starts. Hope Rodgers will get some time against our defense

  3. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Yea, Yea, but will he cover Egbuka & JMac? Is what I want to know. They’ve got Porter Jr & Darius Slay over there too.

    Also, a Scotty Miller reunion(?).

  4. JimBobBuc Says:

The Pittsburgh press is very proud of their DB’s, so a good opportunity for the Bucs receivers.

The Steelers OL has been weak the last couple of years, so the DL/Edge guys should be able to mount a pass rush, but Rodgers has that quick release….

  5. Rod Munch Says:

Evans manhandling Ramsey on SNF that one year, literally shoving him down and running over his corpse, is one of Evans career highlights.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Worthless cover by a worthless player in a worthless game….

  7. LakelandBuc Says:

    Jalen Ramsey is washed up
    There’s a reason why he’s this 4th team

I wanna how Charlie hold up against TJ Watt

  8. LakelandBuc Says:

    ”'”He’s on his 4th team”””

  9. LakelandBuc Says:

I wanna see how Charlie Heck hold up against TJ Watt

This will be a measuring stick for Heck
If he can hold his own against TJ Watt, he’s good to go

  10. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“I wanna how Charlie hold up against TJ Watt”

Watt doesn’t line up over the LT, he lines up over the RT and I doubt he’s playing Saturday.

Heck might get a dosage of Highsmith & Herbig, but def not Watt

  11. Idroolpewter&red Says:

I want to know about TJ Watt against Heck as well, but not going to be shocked or disappointed if Watt wins some battles against him. TJ Watt is one of the best in the league.

    Love Mike Tomlin

    ^^^^^^^

TWO YEARS! Tomlin took the Steelers HC job in 2007. Rah was hired in 2009. I really wish Tomlin would have stayed a DC with the Vikings a little longer. You know he’d be (and still be) our HC. He got a SB. We got a SB. It worked out for everyone but I would have loved a coach from the Dungy lineage in Tampa.

  13. David Says:

Mike Tomlin… The one that got away. He is the reason, in my opinion, the Glazers jumped the gun to hire Raheem Morris. They did not want another in-house guy to get away.

Great Coach, been getting a bad rap lately. It just goes to prove that no matter how good of a coach you are, if you don’t have a franchise quarterback, you will not be much better than .500 and you’re only getting beyond
    that with a great defense

  14. David Says:

🙏 May they be blessed with no injuries

  15. LakelandBuc Says:

I’m not talking about the game Saturday
I’m talking about today joint practice

  16. zzbucs Says:

Don’t think ME13 will go no more than 5/6 plays, not sure even if he is gonna be a starter……………

  17. BakerTillIDie Says:

Seriously, every post, is clickbait. Baker and offense, probally #1 this year, worst is #2. Griz, probally hc. again. dfense, on the rise. i would say top 8. top 4, if all healthy.

  18. View from 132 Says:

If this was December, that’s a great headline. In preseason… meh. Base coverages. 80% efforts. Not real football.

  19. 813bucboi Says:

Mike shouldnt play in PS imo

    GO BUCS!!!!

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Honestly, I’d rather Mike not play at all. Certainly no more than 2 series…but the last thing we need is a Mike Evan’s injury.

  21. GoneGator Says:

Most interested in what “structure’s” we’re running and working on. Seemed like a lot of 12 personnel against the Titans (?) on offense. Not sure what our coverage schemes we’re predominantly on defense.

    Jalen Ramsey is washed up
    There’s a reason why he’s this 4th team

Riddick is with his 5th and Mayfield with his 4th. Suppose in these cases there is a logical explanation and it’s someone else’s fault.

  23. Joe Says:

Sorry guys. Steelers practice media protocol is VERY strict. Can’t type about specifics AT ALL unless it is backed up by quotes.

So Joe’s notes today will be … something.

  24. Fan of the South Says:

Tomlin in no way going to throw the Kitchen sink at his Buddy. Pittsburgh will probably have one of the best defenses in 2025 but the Bucs will only see bits and pieces of it. first team that will see it is the Jets in early September and NY will need fields to do a lot with his legs.

As far as Ramsey vs Evans? The last time they matched up was 2021 Divisional Round and Evans had 8 catches on 16 targets. Evans did have a long 55 yard TD but it was the only receiving score by the Bucs that day. 64 yards receiving for Evans other than the scoring play on the other 7 receptions was around 9 yards per catch. Only other WR’s to have yards were Miller @ 38 and Johnson @ 15.

Ramsey kept Evans at his 14.5 yard average but held him to a 50 % completion rate and that allowed the rest of the secondary to smother the remaining wide outs.
Without Gronk and Lenny the Bucs would not have been able to move the ball at all.

Bucs should be thrilled they will only face the Steelers in the Preseason.

  25. Bucsfan Says:

It is only 84 Degrees and 51% humidity in the steel city today, so that prolly feels like AC compared to what our Bucs usually practice in.

  26. CallTheSaltTruck Says:

Joe- Can you quote tweets from other outlets? A lot of noise on twitter about Evans burning Ramsey repeatedly.

  27. Bucsfan Says:

Well Joe at least you can report on injuries and who was available or a non participant after the practice closes.

  28. Baking with Grizz Says:

Jalen Ramsey Will Try To Cover Mike Evans

    C’mon Joe!
