Jacob Parrish Continues To Impress

August 10th, 2025

Joe knows a lot of attention has been heaped on rookie cornerback Benjamin Morrison. Joe guesses part of that is because he played for arguably the biggest brand name in college football: Notre Dame.

But the Bucs have a rookie corner drafted in the third round that has been more impressive since the first time Joe saw him in rookie minicamp. That’s Jacob Parrish.

No knock on Morrison who was coming off hip surgery last year. Parrish got a slight jump on him. Now, with Morrison sidelined with a bad hamstring and expected out the rest of preseason, Parrish is easily ahead of Morrison.

Parrish just seems around the ball all the time. Joe would not jump off a ledge if he beat out Zyon McCollum. Joe understands Parrish will likely be the starting nickel corner but the way he constantly makes plays, Joe would love to see the guy on the field full-time.

Last night Parrish had two passes defensed in roughly a quarter and a half of football.

Let’s just say Parrish met Bucs coach Todd Bowles’ standards.

“I thought he did a very good job, especially out at the [cornerback] spot,” Bowles said. “The nickel spot, we had help going inside that he got a leverage out once or twice.

“I thought [Parrish] did a very good job from that standpoint. The preseason is going to be great for him. I look forward to him having a heck of a season this year.”

High praise coming from Bowles.

The only thing Joe didn’t like about Parrish last night was Joe would have pulled him after the first Titans possession. The Bucs don’t need both rookie corners hurt.

Just before the game, it rained heavily. Joe doesn’t know if the wet field led to Rachaad White’s apparent groin injury but given the conditions, it was reckless to have any starter on the field.

Watching Parrish in practice, not only does he always seem to be around the ball, but he gradually just gets better and better.

Joe doesn’t think anyone needs to worry if Parrish can do the job.

Joe, you’re getting a little ahead of yourself here. Parrish is no where near Zyon’s talent level. He might be good but Zyon is our #1 corner. He would beat out Dean before Zyon and he’s not close to doing that. If Dean and Zyon are healthy they are the unquestioned starters.

  2. AI Bot Says:

Atl Buc -_Talent wise he’s way ahead of where McCollum was when he was drafted. McCollum is just the better athlete.

  3. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

Parrish looked like the best CB the Bucs have had since Barber last night.

I haven’t seen that tight of coverage by any CB in the past 5-10 years here.

  4. dmatt Says:

What stood out to me about Parrish is he play aggressive, has good instincts n field awareness, likes to hit, n is fast contrary to JDean’s lack of aggressiveness, passive tackler, lack of field awareness, n only has speed. On the other hand, McCullough is fast, aggressive, n likes to hit. I say save the cash we’re paying
Dean then trade him for a vet DE. Let’s quit holding on to these hiccup players i.e., Dean, TPalmer, Josh Hayes, Jose Ramirez, Mike Green with nothing but potential n play players who shows consistency. This Nick Jackson and JJ Roberts guy are natural born ballers. Another smart move would be to trade Rachaad White for future draft pick/s n let Owen Wright or rookie Josh Williams take that spot. If we have hopes of making it to the SB this year, now is the time to think n play like a SB team n good riddance of those who don’t.

  5. Tbbucs3 Says:

Hard to imagine he wouldnt be better than Josh Hayes

  6. Bucs4Ever Says:

he looks great out there…ball hawk

  7. Mort Says:

White isn’t a starter. Your backups have to play in the games because you don’t just forfeit the game because it’s wet. You wear longer cleats instead.

  8. lambchop Says:

    @dmatt,

Hold you horse on showing Rachaad White the boot. He is still a threat in the passing game even if he is overhyped in the running game. One preseason game doesn’t make a hero or a villain. You don’t cut starters for unproven guys based on one preseason game. Calm down.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

These rookies need to play regardless of their draft status.

  10. toopanca Says:

As to playing Parrish, practice and even a scrimmage against another team are not the test that a real game is. Preseason isn’t either, but it is a smidgen closer. So, seeing what Parrish can do in preseason is informative.

More importantly, it is continuing education for Parrish. Even with teams running base offenses, he will find himself in new situations. And, many of the opposing players are fighting for their jobs. The plays called may be plain and simple, but players trying to make a team will show every trick in their tool kit trying to make the team. Again, continuing education for Parrish.

Finally, no one is more motivated to find a weak spot in his game than those opposing players trying to make the team. It is the best acid test that you can get until the season starts.

Those may not be reasons for playing Parrish four quarters, but they probably are reasons for playing him for more than one series of downs.

  11. dmatt Says:

    @lambchop
This has nothing to do with one preseason game. This would be a business move. Bucky Sean are also a threat in the passing game. My take is to use Rachaad
to stock up on draft capital now. Being that he’s good in the passing game, we can get at least a 3rd pick or maybe a 4th n 5th pick for him. We can’t use three good rb at the same time. We need another lb n de as starter n depth.

  12. orlbucfan Says:

Todd Bowles: “The preseason is going to be great for him.” Worthless preseason games, huh? Parrish sounded good last night on Bucs Radio. Wonder if he’s gonna be playing with the D starters next weekend?

  13. David Says:

He was great. He gave up some outs and crossing patterns to Calvin Ridley… One of the quickest, fastest guys in the NFL and it was his first game as a rookie. Totally understandable.

  14. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Mort

In todays NFL, your RB2 is basically a starter.

True workhorse backs like Minnesota AP are rare nowadays and the Bucs risked playing a damn good RB2

  15. Tbbucs3 Says:

Some fans act like we can just make Bucky Irving a workhorse back which is complete nonsense….

RB2s and RB3s are extremely valuable to this team to protect Bucky’s long term health. Cant just go dumping those guys on the trade block.

  16. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Dean will be injured in the second quarter of game two and Parrish takes his job.
    Dean is soft.

  17. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Baptized by Ridley & Lockett. Sometimes life comes at you fast, no sweat for Parrish, he ran a 4.3.

I think he looked fine, and for you guys that don’t like Hayes other than the fact he was forced into action due to injury last year. HE didn’t look all that bad either for a #4/5 CB(at best).

  18. Buddha Says:

Tennessee had the first pick in the draft. They have a weak roster. Buccaneers dominated them as expected. These games are meaningless except for the bottom of the roster.

  19. infomeplease Says:

Credit JL and the scouts! They have taken a team who’s talent depth was thin as ice on a NY car in January and added standout depth at almost every position! LFG!

  20. 1sparkybuc Says:

Pass protection is going to be critical until the OL is healthy. White is clearly the best RB we have at keeping Mayfield clean. Trading him now would be incredibly stupid. He’s also dependable and productive catching the ball. We need to extend his contract, not trade him away.

  21. adam from ny Says:

all i know is i saw vet receivers working the kidd…

    maybe i was watching a different game…lol…

but i honed in and watched him in the first half, and ward and receivers went right at him with relative ease…

he’s no where near zyon rn

  22. Joe Says:

Being that he’s good in the passing game, we can get at least a 3rd pick or maybe a 4th n 5th pick for him.

    ***MAY-be*** a fifth round pick.

Why would any team trade for him short of an emergency when they can just buy him in eight months? A borderline starting running back who in his first two years led the league’s worst rushing attack is not one-year rental worthy unless a team is desperate.

  23. Joe Says:

Tennessee had the first pick in the draft. They have a weak roster. Buccaneers dominated them as expected. These games are meaningless except for the bottom of the roster.

The nerve you have to type with reason and logic. 🙂 When coaches flat out say they get more out of joint practices, that’s all you need to know.

But yeah, winning a worthless preseason game in early August is a sure sign from the heavens of a Super Bowl appearance.

  24. Rod Munch Says:

Humm… I thought Parrish had a tough outing as the starters kept throwing at him over and over, and Ridley and Lockett were eating him up. To be clear, I have zero issues with that, Ridley is an extremely good WR who has been sabotaged by playing with trash QBs, and Lockett at this point is old buy a very savvy veteran, but I have no idea how you watch Parrish get beat a number of times and think he had a good night. I love the idea of letting the kid play in a game situation vs good players, those reps are invaluable. He made some plays later in the half vs the backups, and I’m glad he got some good plays in at the end, but again, I would not say he had a good night. Instead I’d say he learned some valuable lessons.

  25. adam from ny Says:

    ^^^

    exactly rod…….

what game were these people watching…?

    the yung parishioner got werked

  26. adam from ny Says:

thank God it was preseason…or this same group of knuckleheads would actually be very upset…

say advanced stats were getting prorated for an entire season, mimicking his performance of last night, they would probably have him as one of the lowest rated corners in the league…

and fair-weathered fans would be manning the guillotine right about now, and calling for his head

  27. Rod Munch Says:

adam from ny – yeah, and again, I’m not bashing Parrish in any way, I actually think it’s good for him to go out there and get beat-up on a little. After reading all the headlines about having an exceptional camp, this is the type of thing that, based on everything I read about him so far, this is the type of thing that will cause him to double down and go even harder in practice.

And he did have some good plays before the half, so I’m glad he had some confidence builders in there at the end, but getting beat early should hopefully make him p/o’d, and want to get even better.

  28. dumboldguy Says:

To those saying Parrish was torched, he was beat twice on shallow crossings from almost the numbers on one side to the far hash marks in single coverage. Only elite CBs can hold that coverage against anybody much less Ridley. I assume when it counts there will either be pressure from the blitz or under zones mixed with man. What I do know is he ball hawks which is more than I can say for any of our other corners.

  29. BuccinBaker6, Says:

Parrish an Jackson on defense an Greene an Wright on offense impressed me a lot I think this kid Nic Jackson might make this Squad a Pick an a Sack nice game

  30. adam from ny Says:

i just think people are pumping him up a little too much…dude got broken in a bit out there last night…

ridley and lockett are both pro’s pros tho…they are seriously good receivers – so it was bound to happen to him…

does he look like he’s gonna be alright?…yeah…but he played like a rookie at times and people are anointing him as something he’s not…at least not yet…

he looks like a nice draft pick tho…

by no means am i down on him or anything…people just seem to be tooting his horn a little too much, too early…

i’m excited to have 2 new corners who people are high on…it’s a good thing…i don’t wanna turn into the heel on here because of parish…i’ll let rod keep the heel status moving forward lol 🙂

just was giving an honest review…he didn’t do so great…he was mediocre at best imho…but if people think that was amazing play because it was his first nfl action, then so be it…everyone has an opinion

  31. adam from ny Says:

jackson and bullock look good…and they come from serious schools if i’m correct…they look hungry…at least one could be a keeper, if not both…

i keep saying sign kyzir white – but it hasn’t happened…if it’s not gonna happen and these 2 keep on rolling – then keep ’em !

we need some hungry, youthful, frothy backers to add into the mix if some of the older dudes begin to look like they’re just going thru the motions (not mentioning names)

  32. BucU Says:

Morrison out for the rest of preseason? Great. Just what we needed a Jamaal Dean clone.
