Did John Wolford Release Trigger Kyle Trask’s?
August 26th, 2025
Former Bucs backup QB John Wolford.
Joe wonders what kind of input Baker Mayfield had in the release of Kyle Trask.
It’s a fair question when you consider Mayfield had a heavy hand in picking the Bucs’ offensive coordinator.
One would think the franchise QB has a degree of influence into the guys he must work closely with every single day.
Enter John Wolford, the Bucs’ third-string QB in 2023, and a longtime Rams backup Mayfield got to know during his limited time in L.A.
“John is extremely vital to our QB room. A guy that when we brought him in, I was very happy about it,” Mayfield said in 2023. “Just his knowledge of the system … he’s wicked smart. He is an extremely important piece for us to have. I know he challenges the guys on the scout team and is always an extra communicator for our QB room.
“Guys like that are invaluable.”
Todd Bowles, who signed Wolford out of college to the Jets in 2018, also praised Wolford’s smarts two years ago.
Wolford was cut by the Jaguars yesterday. The report came hours before Trask’s announcement.
Is it possible Wolford is on his way to Tampa as the practice squad QB, an intellectual asset desired by Mayfield? Joe is very curious.

if it aint a DE, not interested!!!!
GO BUCS!!!!!
August 26th, 2025 at 9:45 am
No, no, no, a thousand times NO!!!!! It’s all because Trask wouldn’t give up the number 2 jersey to Emeka Egbuka. That reason makes as much sense as Joe’s latest musing.
August 26th, 2025 at 9:48 am
Joe, the long off-season and preseason is weighing on you. I know you are just trying to make a living and I admire your passion for all things Buccaneer, but these conspiracy theories run the risk of turning JBF into the FOX NEWS of NFL football.
August 26th, 2025 at 9:49 am
At this point going through so many systems and situation I highly doubt Baker would get into a situation where he wants a backup to be removed just so he can get some occasional advice. He’s more A – I want to stay on the field kinda guy” so the backup is not politics he would get into
You stirring a pot Joe? 🙂 . this us red meat for the trask brigade
August 26th, 2025 at 9:51 am
Better Fox news than lying CNN and the others. Punk
August 26th, 2025 at 9:52 am
I think it has more to do with the NFL in general. There is very little interest in true pocket passers in 2025. If a QB can’t scramble or, at the very least, move the pocket, then there is little value to them.
August 26th, 2025 at 9:59 am
Your theory is possible, but I kind of doubt it. I wouldn’t mind him coming back but a jag is a jag.
August 26th, 2025 at 10:01 am
Just say no, no, no. NO!
August 26th, 2025 at 10:01 am
Right on Henry!
August 26th, 2025 at 10:02 am
KT2 was released because he was dead weight! He was taking up a roster spot that could be used on a player who could actually help the team and would probably be picked up on waivers by another.. The Buc’s are “all in” again this year. Wait till you see who they sign with all the money they are stock piling!!!
August 26th, 2025 at 10:07 am
hmmm… maybe the 2023 competition was closer than we thought if baker did this
August 26th, 2025 at 10:07 am
Joe knows more than he is letting on but one thing is clear. If you watch the sidelines, rarely was Kyle Trask talking to Baker. Baker never went to Kyle Trask for help with a play. Look at some other team backups QB’s. Andy Dalton and Bryce Young are buddies on the sideline and Dalton is always coaching him. I bet Teddy Bridgewater will do the same. Trask just was never one of the brod
August 26th, 2025 at 10:07 am
Meant to say bros*
August 26th, 2025 at 10:10 am
Why are we still talking about the worst back up QB in history according to the stupid Baker fan bois? He’s gone now and there is much bigger things to worry about. Like the moronic HC and his god awful, no good, lousy, terrible, very bad defense. And the choke artist QB. Bye Trask. Hope everything works out for you.
August 26th, 2025 at 10:17 am
Kyle Trask will never be a starter in the NFL. Sure he may start because of an injury but he will never be more than a clipboard toting backup. Matthew a veal. Stop sucking the Gators off.
August 26th, 2025 at 10:19 am
Trask / Wolford
6 of one
Half a dozen of the other
If they coulda
They woulda
August 26th, 2025 at 10:26 am
Kyle Trask is a joke. Think about this, 3 weeks ago Shedeur Sanders was the second coming of Joe Montana. This week , couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat . Tommy Devito for the Giants went 15 of 17 with 3 Touchdown passes and was cut. Point is these guys shine against backups but are horrible against first string NFL players. Hit the road Jack. Career backup. Make your millions by sitting on the bench. Wish I had that gig.
August 26th, 2025 at 10:26 am
I like Wolford. I’d be okay with signing him. I don’t see how Teddy fits at his age. Baker is too old to need mentoring.
August 26th, 2025 at 10:28 am
Trask was drafted during BAs time and was a QB in the style that BA liked. Bowles wants and the NFL is moving to more mobile QBs so Trask is out in favor of a QB that is more mobile. Pratt was also a more mobile QB who didn’t work out. None of us should really be too worried about Trask though. He has made around $7 M dollars being a backup
August 26th, 2025 at 10:34 am
Alternatively, maybe Coen and the Jags released Wolford to make room for Trask since their mole at Bucs HQ told them the latter was on the chopping block.
On another note, Trask must hold the record for the most online comments generated per actual pass thrown in regular season games.
August 26th, 2025 at 10:39 am
I was very impressed with back up QB Shane Buechele of the Bills last game. He will be on the waiver wire according to the Bills rumor mill
August 26th, 2025 at 10:39 am
Sign edge Brennan Jackson who was cut by the Rams immediately.
August 26th, 2025 at 10:54 am
Why is this even a story. More Beavis and Butthead journalism.
August 26th, 2025 at 10:55 am
Man, you guys (Joes) and your word choice…”heavy hand”? I dunno….I don’t think you ever backed that up. I suspect Bowles. Light and the Glazer have the heavy hand. But I certainly have less info than y’all.
Could Mayfield prefer Wolford or didn’t necessarily put his foot down over Trasks impending departure…if they even consult him on it? (although with Teddy coming in the writing was on the wall) Sure, maybe.
Wolford always appeared one hard hit away from being at the end of his career to me. I think he played a couple series and got knocked out of the season a couple yrs ago here if my memory serves?. I dunno if we will see him. I guess if we do they definitely are looking to develop a QB and good bye to Bazelak.
August 26th, 2025 at 11:13 am
Not sure I would value him more than Trask…..Trask is equally productive, knows the offense and is still developing. I starting to think Trask asked to leave and with Bridgewater available the Bucs were willing to let him try his luck elsewhere. I would rather have a young QB developing on the practice squad vs a mediocre veteran.
August 26th, 2025 at 11:32 am
If he’s all that, and Coen knows him well, why not just stay in J Ville on their PS? Besides we now have the experience, and brain power of Teddy. It’s better to keep a young QB on the PS to develop. It seems to me Bazelak fits that bill. Should Baker go down long term, we could always sign Wolford off the Jags PS.
August 26th, 2025 at 11:41 am
Another consideration
If your starter is a mobile quarterback and offensive line, WR et al are used to that blocking and what the Quarterback may be doing when things breakdown it makes sense that the substitute quarterback has the same characteristics.
August 26th, 2025 at 11:42 am
Stick to football, Henry. Your ignorance is less obvious.
August 26th, 2025 at 11:56 am
Weary of the Bucs/Bowles QB Follies.
August 26th, 2025 at 11:58 am
What makes you guys think that Coen wants Trask??? He never really played him even when Mayfield was injured. Traskies are weird.
August 26th, 2025 at 12:11 pm
What’s CNN got to do with the Tampa Bay Bucs? That’s a new one to me.
August 26th, 2025 at 12:16 pm
All intelligent life watches Fox News and not Fake news Budda. 70% of the ratings. Then there’s the LOUD and DUMB 30%ers like you
August 26th, 2025 at 12:20 pm
Robert…..in Sanders’ last game he went 3-6 with a 💯 drop…….couldn’t hit water from a boat? Didn’t have a second of time is the truth, as 4 of the OL blocking for him are now on the street like you and me.
And yet your dumbass had to throw shade at something they know NOTHING about. Just another day on the Ineternet with Idiots
August 26th, 2025 at 12:22 pm
Well Fox News got sued for like $800 million for lying about the election, so there’s that for ur trust worthy news channel
August 26th, 2025 at 12:31 pm
Lies KidFloFlo……….CBS and ABC however DID pay settlement s directly to TRUMP because they, and their sheep followers, are LIARS
August 26th, 2025 at 12:46 pm
Jacksonville needs a mobile back up,,, the QB gets pounded in Coens offense ,,, Trask would be broken in half ,,, Trask needs to Go to Rams or Steelers ,,, somewhere with statue QBs ,,,
August 26th, 2025 at 12:48 pm
John Wilford let go from Jacksonville ? Now where oh where could Jacksonville find a Quarterback who knows Coen’s offense backwards and forwards this late in the preseason ?Hmmm? One who is extremely popular in Jacksonville to fill the seats again? One who is a pocket passer who could take over if the oft injured current occupant of the position goes down and push or replace that occupant if he doesn’t improve? Anybody got an answer? Anybody? Anybody? Beuler? Bueler?Anyone?
August 26th, 2025 at 12:50 pm
trask will dissapear from the nfl like leftwich
August 26th, 2025 at 1:01 pm
“I don’t see how Teddy fits at his age. Baker is too old to need mentoring.“
Nobody is too old to know better
August 26th, 2025 at 1:10 pm
Both Teddy and Mayfield are getting too old to be running around , they’ve both already been passed around the league more than a groupie at a Hell’s Angels party.
August 26th, 2025 at 1:13 pm
The Bucs will Never win a Super Bowl with Baker
He’s a decent Regular season QB
But he’s not Tom Brady
August 26th, 2025 at 1:14 pm
Hard Truth. Trask had been around long enough to have shown his true potential: ok backup but not a starter. Bucs can use a rookie, etc for the #3. Don’t think any of the remaining backups could take the Bucs to the playoffs. It’s Baker or else. If he goes down the Bucs season has poor chances.
August 26th, 2025 at 1:21 pm
Wait, are ppl saying Bridgewater is mobile? Maybe 5 yrs ago. He is to QB what Shaq is to OLB. Time to stop chasing the past
August 26th, 2025 at 1:24 pm
By all accounts in Joe’s very insightful articles, this is a major Licht fail. Sure you can say he was a BA guy, but GMs gotta be GMs
August 26th, 2025 at 1:31 pm
So Josh Williams makes the team…
Am I missing the site that lists the 53?
August 26th, 2025 at 1:51 pm
Truth is Super Bowl quality qbs are hard to come by and very expensive even past their prime. If the bucs are lucky Baker will survive the season. Baker is an exciting playmaker, but takes too many physical risks. Bucs better spend an early pick next year for the best they can get for the future. Baker is exciting to watch, but he is one really hard hit from disaster and he takes too many risks. An old but decent back up is not likely to carry the Bucs to the Super Bowl. Licht better use a first round pick on a highly rated prospect next year.
August 26th, 2025 at 2:00 pm
Well according to childflo logic the entire democratic group will be sued and headed ON TO JAIL for their Russia Russia Russia LIES that you geniuses fell for because your hero sold all of you out for as literally stupid as you actually are.
The brilliant part in that party have already moved on as Republicans! And with that made clear …. Thank you very much for your deep understanding.
Now shut your c, o, c, k s,u,c,k,e,r and get on back to changing into what the rest of the world call “little women”! You can call yourselves whatever you want as you find glorious pleaser in emasculating yourselves, But have No doubt…. the world will refer to you as women!
You are not the majority and your childish, political crap is not appreciated on this FOOTBALL web site.
Do you ladies think we can talk about football now girls? Or do you really need to talk about your lipstick some more?
August 26th, 2025 at 2:16 pm
That won’t/shouldn’t happen until 4 pm.
August 26th, 2025 at 2:18 pm
Don’t care. Waiting to see how Bilgewater works out. Will it be a Bowles Blunder or a smooth move?
August 26th, 2025 at 2:23 pm
It is odd they resigned Trask only to cut him. Was he worse after the new contract?
He seems durable, unlike Teddy. A third we could be needed!
August 26th, 2025 at 2:43 pm
Non silent majority and JK
Lol @ you tough guy cult members.
August 26th, 2025 at 7:34 pm
I love reading what you all have to say about “football” but there is always some dumb f$$k that has to bring politics into it. Shut the …. up
August 26th, 2025 at 7:56 pm
I did notice in pre games Kyle played in,especially in bills game every throw looked shakey at best to me what was u r version of him in that game
