Bucs Training Camp 2025, Day 11 Practice Notes
August 6th, 2025
Mike Evans has a sitdown with Kay Adams of FanDuel TV after Bucs practice Wednesday.
Underwear football rears its ugly head again today at Bucs training camp. One reason was the Bucs host the Titans tomorrow in a joint practice.
So, here are some observations and highlights, which featured several picks and almost-picks.
* Receiver/returner Trey Palmer sat out again. And receiver/returner Tez Johnson had a handful of snaps in a weird way but for the most part, he too sat out. As did tight end Cade Otton, who has missed most of training camp with what is believed to be a hamstring injury. Bucs media relations folks are barring the pen and mic club from talking to him. As the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio would say, “Silence invites speculation.” Oh, and rookie cornerback Benjamin Morrison was out, too.
* New backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was here. And he was in (practice) uniform. He wears No. 16. However, Bridgewater only threw (some) passes in individual drills early in practice. He did not participate in any 11-on-11 snaps.
* In walk-throughs, Johnson was on the field. For a couple of snaps. In a weird way. Johnson, not in a helmet or any pads but rocking a cap over a towel, looked like he lined up at cornerback. Joe typed “looked like” because Johnson was just a step or two from the line of scrimmage. Not sure what this was all about. That was the only time Joe noticed him on the field.
* Both Palmer and Johnson — who Joe believes are both fighting for one roster spot — have been sidelined for days. Meanwhile, receiver Ryan Miller is making play after play today. Miller is putting plays on tape while Palmer and Johnson are watching from the sidelines. Both Palmer and Johnson are missing a lot of chances to make an impression. Meanwhile, Miller is impressing.
* Baker Mayfield throws to the left for Sterling Shepard and it is off his hands. Rookie cornerback Jacob Parrish had good coverage.
* Mayfield pitches to Bucky Irving to the right.
* Mayfield throws a short screen pass to the left for Shepard. That Sooners connection will be big later.
* Rachaad White with a big run off right tackle.
* Receiver Dennis Houston goes in motion from right to left and perhaps he took too much time. He started off barely jogging and when he got right about behind center he suddenly began sprinting.
* The Bucs’ pass rush was hounding Kyle Trask and Mayfield a lot today. On this play, Christian Izien flew in from the offense’s left side and had a “sack” of Trask. Izien blew past Sean Tucker who whiffed on a block worse than Rob Deer.
* Tucker runs to the left side.
* Noted weekday warrior Markees Watts gets a “sack” on Connor Bazelak.
* If you are wondering why Joe has the word “sack” in quotation marks, it’s because it is underwear football. No hitting. No sacking of the quarterback. So the “sacks” are, well, virtual.
* Mayfield completes two passes in a row to Bucky Irving. The first was down the right sideline and the second was in the left flat.
* Mayfield rolls left and gets rid of the ball down the left sideline as Haason Reddick was in hot pursuit.
* Jacob Parrish makes the first of many splashes today by tipping a Trask pass on a blitz.
* The way Parrish has been balling out in training camp, maybe Todd Bowles should think about starting him at full-time outside corner for Zyon McCollum. Joe has nothing against McCullom but Parrish is making more plays on the ball in practices. This Parrish needs to be on the field. The more the better.
* Mayfield throws deep down the right sideline but Jalen McMillan couldn’t get to the ball.
* Mayfield throws low for Ryan Miller to the left and Miller goes low to dig it up. The offensive sideline was right in front of the bleachers and Joe could hear someone holler when Miller came up with the ball, “Oh, hell yeah!”
* Technically, Joe is not supposed to document chatter from the sideline. But man, Joe heard quite a bit of angry, very foul language from three different people on the offensive sideline on a play that went haywire. Apparently, one Bucs player is not very popular in the locker room and his level of intelligence was strongly questioned. Use your imagination.
* Shepard catches a Mayfield pass to the right.
* Trask throws to the left sideline and no one is home.
* Whoa! Good thing it is underwear football. Antoine Winfield flew in on a blitz so fast that had this been real football, Winfield would have erased Mayfield.
* Logan Hall fires in and would have had Mayfield for a “sack.” Mayfield threw the ball away to the left to avoid Hall.
* Kyle Trask has been hounded by a pass rush all training camp. Joe was calling out the second team offensive line. Today, seeing the pass rush getting after Mayfield (and Trask) in a big way, Joe is beginning to think maybe the Bucs’ pass rush is better than we anticipated.
* Mayfield to Houston to the right.
* Mayfield goes deep to the left and overthrows everyone.
* Rachaad White runs right.
* Trask to Tanner Taula over the middle.
* Trask to Tucker to the short right.
* Mayfield throws down the right seam too short for Garrett Greene. That didn’t stop the West Virginia product from going low and catching the ball before it hit grass.
* Trask goes way deep over the middle for Devin Culp who makes the catch.
* Trask throws to veteran signee Owen Wright in the left flat.
Red Zone
* Mayfield to Emeka Egbuka in the near left corner of the end zone.
* Mayfield to Bucky on a screen pass to the right.
* Beautiful pass: Mayfield from 20 yards out has a pass drop in the bucket right into the hands of McMillan in stride down the left sideline for six. Perfect throw and catch.
* Mayfield fakes to Rachaad White and rolls left throwing down the left sideline for Shepard. #BoomerSooner
* Trask rolls right and attempts to throw a screen pass left but the ball hits grass.
* Ouch! Dennis Houston had a ball hit him right in the hands on an inside screen from Trask and he dropped the ball. Can’t ask for better placement of a pass. Gotta catch those if you want to make the team, son.
* Wright runs wrong: Tried a run up the middle and got nowhere.
* Mayfield tosses to Bucky to the right. But this should have been a “sack.” Nick Jackson (Iowa) was all over Mayfield.
* Bucky gets a few yards on a screen to the left.
* Mayfield tries for Egbuka at the goal line close to the near pylon on the right side and the ball bounces off Egbuka’s outstretched left hand. Kindle Vildor has excellent coverage and Joe thinks he may have gotten a finger on the ball, which was just enough to throw off Egbuka. Rare drop for Egubuka.
* #BoomerSooner connection again: Mayfield down the left sideline for Shepard.
* Uh-guh-lee start to a play but Trask succeeded. Trask was in shotgun and had to field a brutal snap that barely went two yards past the line. Trask scooped the ball out, heavily stumbled and damn near fell down due to the pass rush but was able to right himself in the nick of time to get a pass off to Jacob Harris (UCF), who somehow got two feet down along the right sideline in the end zone for six. Joe heard someone on the offensive sideline holler, “F’ING-A!” Sydney Thomas-pretty catch. Rosie O’Donnell-ugly throw. But Trask found a way to get the job done and that’s all that matters.
* Ryan Miller catches a Mayfield pass along the left sideline in the end zone and he too did a toe-tapping dance to get both feet in.
* Wright up the middle for a touchdown.
* Trask lofts a ball to the left for Miller and the pass is off his hands.
11-on-11
* Mayfield goes deep down the left sideline for Miller, who is fighting Jamel Dean for position. The ball is tipped into the air. As Miller lands on the ground, the ball falls right in his breadbasket.
* Mayfield throws down the left sideline and connects in stride with Shepard on a smooth play.
* Mayfield hits Jacob Parrish right in the numbers and the rookie from Kansas State couldn’t hang on. He’s not happy about it. Should have been a pick-six.
* White up the middle.
* Mayfield throws a bomb down the right seam and Miller hauls it in for an explosion of six points.
* If Trey Palmer and Tez Johnson aren’t careful, Miller is going to pass these guys up on the depth chart.
* #BoomerSooner is at it again. Mayfield goes deep down the right sideline for Shepard.
* Josh Hayes (!) had Trask for a “sack.”
* Tucker runs to the left.
* Trask runs left and hits Taula right in the gut over the middle for a big gain.
* PICK! Jamel Dean grabs a Mayfield pass to the left and houses it.
* Bucky up the middle.
* Tucker runs off right guard.
* Tucker up the middle.
Red Zone
* PICK! Mayfield pumps and pumps again and throws over the middle slightly left. Dean skies for the ball, grabs it and brings it down for his second pick of the day.
* Mayfield floats a pass down the right sideline in the end zone and Egbuka reaches out with his left hand and couldn’t pull it in. Antoine Winfield had solid coverage on the play.
* Mayfield’s pass to the left side is too low. Parrish, too, went low for the ball and Joe thought he had a pick but at the last moment, the ball rolled away. Parrish was peeved. Todd Bowles has to find a way to get this rookie on the field. He’s balling.
* Owen Wright up the middle.
* Mayfield tries for the far left corner of the end zone but no. Parrish again got his mitts on the ball. That’s three almost-picks for him this morning. Parrish lays on the ground in agony because he didn’t pull the ball in.
* And practice winds up with Trask aiming for Houston (the player) in the back of the end zone but a connection was not made.
Bucs host the Titans tomorrow in a joint practice. Friday the Bucs are off and Saturday the Bucs host the Titans in the first worthless preseason game of the summer for both teams.

Thanks Joe!

Great work, Joe. I’m curious who the unpopular unintelligent player is. My guess it might be a QB who won’t be here much longer.
August 6th, 2025 at 2:08 pm
Thank you!
August 6th, 2025 at 2:10 pm
😂 You make it sound like the poor kid couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn, Joe!
August 6th, 2025 at 2:13 pm
Appreciate the notes
August 6th, 2025 at 2:14 pm
Gonna keep an eye on Miller Saturday night. How big is he? Deep threat or slot?
August 6th, 2025 at 2:15 pm
Worthless games are better than no games. IMHO. We at least get to see the rookies and newer players take game snaps.
August 6th, 2025 at 2:18 pm
My imagination isn’t coming up with good answers for who this unliked meat head is!
I’m very curious but with that description, I guess I will just take a pick from the first batch of cuts.

Ryan Miller and Cody Thompson was good in preseason last year
There’s more to it , than these preseason games
I think the coaches already have their 53 players
The preseason games are guys competing for the PS

Barring injuries, Shephard is making the roaster vying for 3rd or 4th receiver until Godwin’s return. Palmer and Tez have to learn that first and most important is their availability. Both sound like the Practice Squad will be their home especially if Miller keeps balling out.
August 6th, 2025 at 2:23 pm
I got 2 sacks today
August 6th, 2025 at 2:26 pm
“Winfield would have erased Mayfield.”
-Solid prose, Joe. Got me fired up! Can’t wait for Pennix to meet AWJ up close.
“Apparently, one Bucs player is not very popular in the locker room and his level of intelligence was strongly questioned. Use your imagination.”
-I have no idea. Need a hint.

So no link to the Kay “I’m not related to Gomez” Adams and Evans video? Too soon maybe.
August 6th, 2025 at 2:29 pm
Sounds like McCullom is having a quiet camp. He needs to step it up.
August 6th, 2025 at 2:33 pm
Oh boy, Joe, you got me curious AF now
Who’s the player in question?
August 6th, 2025 at 2:43 pm
Zero idea.
August 6th, 2025 at 2:44 pm
Gotta have the video before one can publish it.
August 6th, 2025 at 2:51 pm
“Todd Bowles has to find a way to get this rookie on the field. He’s balling.”
He’s not going to have any problems seeing the field, just like Tykee didn’t last season outside of being injured a few games.
August 6th, 2025 at 3:03 pm
Yeah, I’m wondering who that guy may be too. Thought everyone was in love with everyone else in the locker room. Guess one guy is being difficult.
August 6th, 2025 at 3:12 pm
What is with this Bridgewater experiment?
August 6th, 2025 at 3:17 pm
Thanks Joe. I know it is only practice but Mayfield has to reduce his picks if the team is going anywhere.
August 6th, 2025 at 4:03 pm
“worthless preseason game” D@mn it!
August 6th, 2025 at 5:23 pm
That’s what I thought
August 6th, 2025 at 6:34 pm
Lt. Dan, you’ve let him get under your skin. Brush it off.
August 6th, 2025 at 6:41 pm
Joe, thank you for the notes today!
August 6th, 2025 at 6:45 pm
Is it possible that those epithets came from our “salty” OC?
August 6th, 2025 at 7:06 pm
This kid Parrish is a baller. McCollum better step up or else!
August 6th, 2025 at 7:18 pm
Man training camp don’t mean nothing anymore most of these guys don’t have to compete for nothing. Dean and McCollum will be the starters just like Mike Evans and Godwin when he comes back. They don’t compete anymore in practice now days. When you give people staring jobs before the season even stars most don’t practice hard in training camp and that’s why most of these players in today’s sports don’t reach their full potential because they don’t have to compete for nothing. And watch how they play in big games that’s why we are 1-7 in prime time games.

Izien blew past Sean Tucker who whiffed on a block worse than Rob Deer.

I was reading that going, who in the hell is Rob Deer, what all-time missed block did I miss. Then I google it, and he’s a baseball player. Ah, OK, now I know why I never heard of him. I think outside of Fred McGriff and John Rocker, I don’t know many baseball players.

———
Yeah, and then when called on in the regular season they did nothing. Just typical preseason warriors who don’t have the ability to contribute in the regular season. I’m not a big Palmer fan, but I’d take him 100 out of 100 times over either one of those two – and Tez would be above them all just based on potential.

Super notes, Joe. Thank you! So much there, a lot of action with no pads. I think the heat gets to everyone after awhile and it gets spirited.
