“Bite-Your-Kneecap-Type Guys”
August 5th, 2025
Bucs rookie cornerback Jacob Parrish.
Fun time today hearing Lavonte David give a scouting report on the Bucs rookie cornerbacks and assess what he likes in corners overall.
David was a terror at practice today after several days off with a minor undisclosed injury. It seems on one of those days he found time to chat with the Green Light with Chris Long podcast.
Long asked about rookie cornerback Benjamin Morrison, the Bucs’ second-round pick. David lumped him in with third-round pick Jacob Parrish.
“Playing corner you got to be real confident and [Morrison] got it. He got that twitch,” David said. “He got that competitive nature in him. He never wants to lose. He never wants to lose a rep, and that’s what I love about him, man.
“When you look at a DB, right, and they get a pass caught on them or whatever, you want to see them get upset about it. You know what I’m saying? And he’s one of those dudes who’s like that. Nobody wants a DB who don’t compete. He’s one of those guys who definitely compete, and our other rookie [corner] as well, Jacob Parrish. Both those guys are feisty, competitive, bite-your-kneecap-type guys at corner. When you see that out of your DBs, all that does is give you a lot of confidence.”
Joe’s noticed the same thing about Morrison and Parrish. They’re talented as well as very scrappy. The latter may be a function of how hard they’re fighting now for playing time.
This is no Vernon Hargreaves situation in 2016, when the rookie cornerback was gifted a job.
Joe wonders who else David considers a bite-your-kneecap-type guy at corner?

Pretty sure Dean is NOT a bite your kneecap type guy.

One of the current starters is a ‘knee-cap’ kind of guy. The difference is that each year, it’s his knee-cap getting bitten.

I hope the Falcons game don’t be a repeat of last season opener
When we lost three Cornerbacks during the game
I really hope we can stay healthy in the secondary this year

I hope this secondary can stay healthy this season
That’s our greatest concern, players staying healthy

Sounds like something Dan Campbell would say….oh wait, he did in 2021. I’m happy to hear it from Lavonte!

Scrappy sounds right. It’s how he looked in college and made even more sense during the drafted when it was said that Parrish is the youngest of 3 brothers during the draft. Kid probably had to fight even when he didn’t feel like it lol

ok weve got 4 guys to handle 3 spots at corner. nowhere else on the defense do i see someone that could start elsewhere on our bench, maybe anthony nelson.
i like our starters definitely, and the cap doesnt let you spend money on guys that arent taking snaps

LVD saying what we all know – Dean is soft and brittle and likely will be replaced by mid season
McCollum plays with fire, Dean has looked lackadaisical in coverage since well before he got paid

Dean = injure his kneecap kinda player

Joe said, “Joe wonders who else David considers a bite-your-kneecap-type guy at corner?”
And I wonder who he thinks isn’t is a kneecap-biter.

I’m with joe in that I think dean can play . He’s just always injured & in a corner i was picks & tight coverage . Dean can cover pretty good but wouldn’t be able to EVEN catch a STD from a hooker on florida Ave. If these rooks can prove that they can play + picks , it’s the rooks > dean

The phrase “bite your kneecap” is a metaphor, popularized by Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell, meaning to be resilient and fight back when knocked down, even in a brutal and tenacious way. It signifies a refusal to stay down and a determination to inflict damage in return when recovering from adversity. The phrase isn’t meant to be taken literally, but rather as a way to express a strong will to overcome challenges.
I’d say Zion fits that description…

Did not know you were a Dan Campbell interpreter?

“Bite your kneecap” is a Monty Pythons reference- the Black Knight from Holy Grail says it once his limbs are all chopped off, lol.

I probably would have said “bite your ankles” like a terrier would, but that’s just me.
