Baker Mayfield Talks Emeka Egbuka Greatness

August 19th, 2025

Emeka Egbuka’s QB goes national.

Todd Bowles has said rookie Emeka Egbuka is a true No. 1 receiver.

Baker Mayfield seems to think Egbuka could become anyone’s No. 1 receiver.

Despite Egbuka not playing yet in a real game, Mayfield was gushing profusely about him in a Yahoo Sports interview this week.

Host Caroline Fenton asked the Bucs’ quarterback if Egbuka has the ability to be one of the top receivers in the league.

“He does. He does,” Mayfield replied.

“Obviously, being a guy drafted in the first round, you have to have physical talent. But that’s not what separates him. I mean, he’s got all the talent in the world but upstairs, the mental aspect of it, he is a smart cookie. He knows the offense, and this is not an easy one to learn, but he can plug-and-play any receiver spot for us right now.”

Mayfield went on to say Egbuka is driving young players on offense because anyone can point to Egbuka and say, ‘He just got here, he knows his stuff. So there’s no reason you shouldn’t as well.'”

Fenton told Mayfield he was “glowing” talking about Egbuka. And he sure was.

Joe knows it sounds taboo, but Joe sure hopes Chris Godwin is good with being a No. 3 receiver when he returns. It sure looks like the Bucs are trending in that direction.

Keep him off the field with Teddy, the last thing we need is for him to also end up on IR.

  2. SlyPirate Says:

Too much hype. Dial it down.

I’d like to hear the Bucs are working in Culp and White at WR. They are getting thin so why not approach it as an opportunity to get your most explosive players on the field together.

4xWR: Mike, Egbuka, Culp, and White
    1xRB: Bucky

A Yale OC could create missmatch hell for any secondary and the downfield run blocking would be crazy.

  3. Stpetematt Says:

All three of them are #1’s really….

  4. KABucs Says:

… all #1s that should only play Atlanta next.

  5. Hodad Says:

I got EE for 32 dollars in my auction draft. My investment is looking good now. I picked up Tez with my last pick for a dollar. That penny stock might pay off earlier than I’d hoped. Baker cost me 25. My kicker is McLaughlin, and lastly took the Bucs defense.

Egbuka has gone from a rookie who most wondered how involved he could be in the offense – to a #1 WR before the first game is played. Either the hype is at legendary level – or this kid is going to be a great one. We’ll start to find out in less than 3 weeks. It can’t get here soon enough.

lets just get egbuka his gold jacket and be done with it. he doesnt have to actually play a regular season game. he’ll probably get a broken arm or collarbone first game and never play the rest of the season. then it will be non stop “well egbuka was the best of all players with broken arms who never completed their first season” coming from the call center hype machine.

  8. Beeej Says:

    Bad hammy in 4….3….2….

  9. Hodad Says:

Keep practicing outside for our first two indoor games and yeah the hammys could be a problem. Culprit had to leave practice early, heat related. Bowles is going to make sure these guys are wiped out before the season even starts!

  10. Jeff Says:

    But is he Atlanta ready?

  11. NDog is an idiot Says:

Ebuka has got his eyes closed in Pic! Imagine how good he will be when he opens them

  12. Dom Says:

I agree that i think Godwin should be eased back into the offense when he gets back. Give him WR3 snaps until he plays himself back in shape and gets comfortable out there

  13. Davyboy Says:

Yeah I’m not so sure I would go so far as to say Godwin will have to be good with being #3. Chris is one of the very best in the league. You just don’t replace that athlete that easy. He was leading the league in YAC when he got hurt. Replacing that isn’t easily done, especially with something better.
If it proves out that it is true, look out, we are in for a ride this year. There isn’t that much that separates the 1st, 2nd and 3rd ranked offenses. It’s about as much as it would take as for a receiver to be a step up from Chris Godwin.🤔

  14. Teacherman Says:

Ryan Miller and Rakim Jarrett are gangsters!

They play hard, they can take a hit. They are never scared. They block.

I’m a big fan of Ryan Miller and Rakim Jarrett.

Go re-watch last season. They made some big catches at big moments.

    Go Bucs!

  15. David Says:

At first it was great to hear, but it is now to the point of being ridiculous hype. Let’s chill out and see how the season goes with this kid. We’re acting like he’s the second coming of Jerry Rice. Let’s pump the brakes.

  16. JeffreyLane77 Says:

The team is quiet because they don’t even know of Godwin is able to come back. Is it me or does this team seem to handle injuries terribly. From Ryan Jensen to Tristan Wirfs. They seem to make the same decisions over and over. Then act surprised when it doesn’t work out.
