Bad News For Safety J.J. Roberts

August 14th, 2025

Injured rookies.

A bright spot in training camp had a dark afternoon in Pittsburgh.

Undrafted free agent rookie safety J.J. Roberts was impressing Bucs officials through the spring and summer. He’s got good instincts and speed, and looked better than fellow UDFA safety Shilo Sanders.

Today at Bucs practice against the Steelers, Roberts was carted off the field after a gunner drill during which he was running down the field in coverage. Todd Bowles said the rookie will go for tests, but Joe heard around the post-practice scene that things aren’t looking up for Roberts, as in it’s probably a significant injury.

Rough break. That means fans likely will see a lot more of veteran Kayvon Merriweater and Sanders on Saturday.

Could’ve been Winfield and Nucs fans would be having rally’s at One Buc to fire the entire staff

  2. BuccinBaker6, Says:

    No Seriously damn it

  3. VOT Says:

    Ouch

  4. LakelandBuc Says:

It’s not a Bucs story, if it’s not about injuries

Life as a Bucs fan ain’t easy

  5. Koala Says:

Season hasn’t even started and we’re getting killed with injuries. Roberts was 100% going to be part of the 53.

  6. Scott Says:

Dang it! He was set to be a good piece of the puzzle

  7. No Mercy Says:

Sad case of someone lighting it up in camp and not making it to the actual season. Seems pretty common

  8. firethecannons Says:

yeah lets get Winfield healed and keep him in bubblewrap

  9. Fred McNeil Says:

Sorry to hear about JJ. Hopefully he will be back for camp next year.

  10. buc4evr Says:

Geez, the hits just keep on coming. I wouldn’t play any starters for the rest of the preseason. This team is just so frustrating……..lol.

  11. BucEmUp Says:

This is unreal. Are we leading the league with injuries?

  12. Simeon4HOF Says:

    Go get it Shilo

  13. Hunter Says:

That’s awful news for sure. On the positive side, if he does go on IR, he was probably/hopefully not going to play much if he made the roster, so we get to keep him on our team and allow another guy who may have been stolen to make it.

  14. BuccinBaker6, Says:

We don’t even know what his injury is for sure he limped off the field on his own i read so let’s wait an see

  15. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Again, everybody on the field is prone to injury. So next time you plan on using that to negatively label a player, think of JJ.

Hope the kid can heal up, but this probably means we’ll be able to find a way to hold onto he and Shilo, so we win either way.

  16. Tony Says:

Seriously how many players are we gonna lose. I really believe the strength & conditioning coaches need to be looked at because a bunch of the players have been getting hurt overall.

  17. BridleOaksBuc Says:

    Three words…Where’s Todd Torescelli?!
Get him off the golf course!!!

  18. Kenton Smith Says:

Bryce Hall not practicing. Winfield not practicing. Morrison not practicing. Now JJ not practicing. Parrish can play either safety spot and Izien can man the slot. That’s why Bowles likes defensive backs who can play anywhere in the secondary. And here we thought our DB room was loaded with depth. Dadgummit!

  19. ATLBuc Says:

    Let’s go ‘Lo!!

  20. Dom Says:

Have to feel for the rookies like David Walker and J.J Roberts getting their seasons cut short. Hope these guys get back healthy. They showed some promise

  21. LakelandBuc Says:

I feel for the kid, he was having a great Camp

But I’m gonna wait until his MRI results come back tomorrow

  22. Pewter Power Says:

Lost an edge rusher and a safety. Defense was the major concern. Licht is going to go with what he has for better or for worse regardless of it being a year this team could make a deep run without Brady

  23. Hodad Says:

Goodbye to all that depth in the secondary. We’re already signing players back from tryouts in March, and the season hasn’t even started. Even Winfield is hurting again. Morrison practiced for five minutes, and he’s in street clothes. Licht looks for character guys when drafting. Maybe he should look for guys who didn’t miss their last college season due to injury.

  24. buc4evr Says:

Guess Shilo now has a chance to make the roster?

  25. Ben Says:

That sucls, hope he dodges a bullet and it isnt that serious. Lets hope its a pup at worst. Thatll give some extra time to look at other players, take the positives where we can get them.

  26. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Theirs names together in the picture reads like a law firm with a really catchy jingle.

  27. buc4evr Says:

I guess Winfield is also injured now?

  28. BaddBaddBuccs13 Says:

And enter Shilo Sanders!!!!! Let that man play

  29. unbelievable Says:

    So… Winfield, Hall, Roberts, Morrison…

    There goes that secondary depth.

  30. Aqualung Says:

Bucs training and medical expertise at it again. Superior injury causation and allowance is not a winning attribute.

  31. Power Of Pewter Says:

Roberts had a knee injury, described as serious I heard. I’m guessing he’ll be out a long time, perhaps all season.
Winfields injury was said by Bowles to be hamstring tightness. I guess he’ll be back week 1 at earliest but you never know with hamstring… they can linger.

  32. MelvinJunior Says:

So many people completely ‘losing it’ like the world is coming to an end, over losing an UDFA that nobody had even heard of before, and that I’d never ‘noticed’ even playing a single DOWN of College Football (and I watch A LOT of college football). SHEW. I mean, what were ‘the odds’ he was even making the team. Lord,
