“Another Dimension” For Baker Mayfield

August 28th, 2025

So Baker Mayfield’s in-house training camp grades have bubbled to the surface.

Bucccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht seemed to sum them up by slapping a fire emoji on the table🔥.

Asked for his standout player of 2025 camp, Licht pointed to his quarterback during an appearance today on WDAE radio.

“He was really slingin’ it and he was on fire for all of camp,” Licht said of Mayfield. “And just really it looked like he was taking it to another dimension.”

Another dimension? Where is Mayfield supposed to go after throwing for 4,500 yards on 71.4 percent passing last season, complemented by 41 touchdowns and 16 interceptions? That’s a crazy-high bar.

Yeah, Mayfield can cut his league-leading interception total and his league-leading fumble total. But what more is there? Mayfield set a career high (by a mile) running the ball last year and it’s highly unlikely that total increases.

Joe’s not saying Mayfield is maxed out, but he’s darn close. The Bucs need to get better around him.

    Lol,

The words that comes out of some people mouth
    Smh

  2. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

Obviously, 5,000 yards, 50 TD’s, a 70% completion rate, and single digit INT’s would be another level.

    Broaden your perspective, Joes

  3. JD Still Says:

Not choking in playoff games or is that asking too much?

  4. First Last Says:

If he hit 5,000 yards 35-40 touchdowns, and under 15 INT’s I would be happy

  5. DrunkInYbor Says:

How would you know he’s close to maxed out? He could become whatever he aspires to become. He’s just got to make it a reality. He’s not close to maxed out. He’s a dog and he won’t stop hunting that Lombardi until it’s in his teeth. I see he can become the best q.b. in the league. A faster hungrier Drew Brees.

  6. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

    Hmm, Baker can improve:

-By improving his decision making in his progression when he has progressions.(not staring down Mike)

    – Better, more disciplined feet in the pocket to take better advantage of an OL I wish we had in 2022.

-Spark more explosive plays by playing up to Grizzards’ desire to get better with pushing the ball upfield. Even if it takes that 70% completion pct down to 64-66%. I’ll take more chunk plays over padding the pct with passes of -4 yards before the YAC kicks in.

    – a spell of consistent play, there’s never been a 4-game span in his career he’s gone w/o tossing a pick or losing a fumble.

That’s what I wanna see improved from Mayfield. Not expecting it at all times, or even most of our games, but if we can get improvement from Baker in any of these things I’ll raise the 10-win floor to 12.

We need our offense and defense to show up together for games. One good quarter or half from one side while we all wait for the otherside to get going will lose us just as many 1-score games as we see.

  7. PSL Bob Says:

“Joe’s not saying Mayfield is maxed out, but he’s darn close. The Bucs need to get better around him.” Say what? Where do they get better? When healthy, the O line is top 5. RBs are cooking. WR room is off the charts. The only possible deficit is at TE. Not a lot of room to get better. Again, when healthy!

It’s the defense stupid! That’s what needs to get better. A better defense will give more snaps to the offense and Baker can pad his stats even more.

  8. HC Grover Says:

We have now entered…The Twilite Zone

  9. Lightningvinny Says:

JD facts say you are wrong,,,,there is a perception that Baker can’t win in the playoffs ,, BT I’m pretty sure his playoff record is 2-3 ,, not Mahomes like but not the worst ever,,
Lamar is 3-5, Josh Allen is 7-6,, Dak is 2-5,, Joe Burrow 5-2, Herbert 0-2 , Matt Stafford 5-5,, Goff 5-5,,,

  10. Oxycondomns Says:

parsons traded to packers 2 first rdr

  11. LakelandBuc Says:

I’m just surprised that Licht said what he said
About Baker having the most outstanding camp

I thought ME, Egbuka, Parrish had better Camp

  12. LakelandBuc Says:

The Packers stole . Micah Parsons from the Cowboys
But, it cost them a pretty penny

  13. BA’s Red Pen Says:

How the F did the Bucs let the GD Packers get Parsons? Malpractice Licht!!!

  14. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Packers will do that and still split with every team in their division 😂. 2 firsts and a yacht-load of money just to finish 3rd in the North is going to be funny to watch lol

  15. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Not just 2 picks, but a DL too. Need to ask if you would be good with two firsts and Vita or Kancey.

  16. Kgh4life Says:

This is the same cheap GM that said, Braswell is gonna shock the world, smh.

  17. MikeBuc Says:

“Yeah, Mayfield can cut his league-leading interception total and his league-leading fumble total. But what more is there? ”

The long ball that he used to throw on rollouts when in Cleveland. Have seen very little of that.

  18. Davyboy Says:

Like I have been saying and apparently our GM agrees, the cream is rising!!! 😉

  19. Louinsrq Says:

Giving up 2 #1s was out of the question. We need edge, 2 ilb, and the right db hybrid. Let Jason work his magic. Next year our receiver room will be flush, our ol will have gotten even better, rbs solid still, and we better get grizz strokes to stay for a few years at least. Let him be an OC for a few years before getting more admin duties.

  20. Davyboy Says:

Having the BEST passer rating in the whole postseason by far is a site different than choking JD. Give up on the UF thing. This is the NFL.

  21. LakelandBuc Says:

But, the Packers 1st round picks will be a late first

That’s not much to give for a 26 year old
Three time All-Pro Linebacker, who’s versatile

  22. OR Buc Says:

    F Micah going to GB.

  23. MikeBuc Says:

Jimini 47 Million per for Parsons.
With two first rounders and DL too

    Can’t blame Licht for passing.

  24. Lt. Dan Says:

@ Mike: Agreed. Jimini. And if Parsons gets hurt….that’s the rub. One guy occupying all of those assets.

  25. buc4evr Says:

@Mike Buc, Yeah 4 years $188 M. that is crazy.

  26. LakelandBuc Says:

We’re paying more than 47 million for players that’s always injured
And some are not playing now

  27. orlbucfan Says:

I’m going to just listen to the opening game in Hotlanta, and make my opinion from there. Go Bucs!!

  28. Couch Fan Says:

You can have a high QBR and still choke. You fan boys really arent as smart as you think you are.

  29. Davyboy Says:

Like I have been saying and apparently our GM agrees, the cream is rising!!! 😉 old Baker is gonna Bake in 2025!!! Sit back and enjoy the ride because it is not going to be boring.

  30. Lightningvinny Says:

So what your saying couch is , Lamar chokes , Herbert chokes , Allen Chokes , Goff and Stafford choke ,,, basically the only 3 QBs good enough for you are Mahomes, Hurts and Burrow,, they do well in the playoffs

  31. OR Buc Says:

Yes, 47 mil is a lot for 1 asset if he goes down. The counter to that is if he stays healthy, you’re getting all that benefit vs a group of 47 mil guys here or there that suck or don’t play from injury.

  32. LakelandBuc Says:

    OR Buc,

But we’re already paying over 60 million to players, that’s always hurt, missing games. And they have an injury prone history..

  33. Lightningvinny Says:

Extend Baker while you can still get him for 45-50 mil

  34. OR Buc Says:

    LakelandBuc

Yes that was my point. Was responding to someone else’s point about a lot for 1 asset. We shoulda done it. He was worth it.

  35. Oneilbuc Says:

Please don’t extend Baker Mayfield are less we get to a conference championship.

  36. Bucswin Says:

Baker is just getting started! His Superbowl winning mvp moment. “I would like to thank Tampa bay and the fans for believing in me and surrounding me with great talent, TAMPAAAAAA….. GO BOWLES!

  37. Davyboy Says:

Well Couch at least we know the BASICS of football. As in how a play is “suppose” to be ran vs. how it’s not and so does an NFL coach on PFF but hey, what does an NFL coach know, right?? But that’s all right. Baker will put the poor UF fans permanently in their place this year. After this year, THERE WILL BE NO DOUBT WHO THE STUD QUARTERBACK IS and the real Buc fans will revel in it all 🏴‍☠️

  38. CJBucsFan Says:

Some of yall are ridiculous. Are you forgetting what we had for so long before? Most stable we’ve been at the position in literally forever and complaining like little ungrateful b***hes

  39. Gipper Says:

If Mayfield took the team to a score on every possession, there would be the usual idiots who would say; “Yeah, but he can’t……..” Tom Brady the GOAT said about Baker on TV last year, “He has a great arm and can make every throw.” He didn’t qualify it in any way. Mayfield is a great down field passer who like all QB’s needs time to throw the ball 55yards in the air. Case in point was a long toss last year vs Cowboys that hit McMillan in stride for an apparent TD only to have the ball wrestled away by a Cowboy DB on the ground in the end zone. All Mayfield got out of this great throw was an INT. This allows the goofballs here to say he has to cut down on the INT’s. How about receivers making catches?

  40. KABucs Says:

102 mil towards the cap combined for Love and Parsons.
The Packers are going to have some holes in there team for a while… and if either of those guys get hurt for any length of time, they are so screwed. They better draft like fiends every season.

  41. Denny Gay Says:

The Glazers always wanted a Dan Marino type draw. So 5000 yards would do nice.

  42. LakelandBuc Says:

Brady and Winston threw for 5000

  43. LakelandBuc Says:

    In 16 games

  44. Obvious Says:

Warren Brooks hit it right on the head.

And it all starts with Baker getting better with his pre-snap reads. If he does his feet will slow down and he’ll feel less pressure to have to extend every play by running around. It’s a great skill set to have when you need it, but if he can get more cerebral the turnovers will plummet and the chance at injury will also.

  45. Oneilbuc Says:

Gipper. Baker Mayfield have never lead a team to a conference championship game in his whole career regardless how good the team was . Baker has do better in clutch time in playoffs games when needed. All you Baker fans boys won’t even admit that much about him . I really believe y’all think he’s a hall of famer lol 🤣🤣 because he can do no worng in your eyes. Lol 🤣🤣

  46. Oneilbuc Says:

Davyboy. I rather to be bored and winning games and going to the NFC Championships .

  47. LakelandBuc Says:

It took Brady 17 games to pass for 5000 yards with us
But it took Winston 16 games

  48. sethery Says:

new receiving weapons, o-line has matured and gelled even more. everything looks great… the biggest factor now is scheme. coen was onto something… or was he? was it just a great offense with a lot of talent? I lean toward the latter because it’s happened several years in a row now with multiple OCs.

baker is gonna bake either way. might be a record setting year for the bucs.

  49. Fred Says:

The continuing hype for the Bucs is amazing. If they can be 75% as good as I keep seeing here they will be amazing.

  50. Aqualung Says:

    Right on, Fred.

    Todd.

  51. Lefty Says:

    Lakeland Buc…still a schmuck

  52. Davyboy Says:

Onei, you are seriously confused. We were suppose to win 4 games. You do remember that right? You act like it all just happens overnight. One day we win 4 games, next year the superbowl BOOM!!! But that is how much you deal in reality. It takes a while to gain a level of perfection.
Baker owns the playoffs. You are the one that can’t admit nothing. You are too mad about Baker beating Trask out for the starting job. Get over it, move on. You would be much happier. Baker will get a big fat contract because that’s how good he is. All your begging will do nothing.

  53. Gipper Says:

    Oneilbuc,

I believe you have the right to say whatever you want on these pages even if much of it is incomprehensible. I need one of those pocket, language translation books to figure out what it is you are saying. I gather you are not sold on Baker Mayfield which is your constant theme.

Mayfield just completed his 7th year in the NFL. He is 30 years old and about to enter his prime playing years. Many of us believe there are multiple Super Bowls in his future.

  54. Aqualung Says:

Oneilbuc is pissed about Jameis. Then Trask. Somehow, Jameis’s subsequent failures (and projecting to Trask’s) are all the Bucs fault.

He hated Brady and dismisses that SB2 as a non-event. Didn’t happen because we didn’t have a home grown QB doing it for us.

Now we have Baker, and the way he’s played in two seasons tells me, he is being home grown.

But to Oneilbuc’s credit, he’s a Bucs fan and was giving flowers to Baker before the no punt game against Washington.

Baker does need to not fumble against Wash even if his deer in the headlights rookie is way too wide. He doesn’t need to throw that pass against the Lions even if the receivers botched the route.

He knows he can’t repeat it. We all know, he has a huge mountain to overcome which is the Swiss cheese pass defense. That’s not changing because you can’t be known as a defensive genius if you let your players just play what they’re trained to do. Todd wants every player to be good at everything. Everyone knows it.

Jason Licht’s big blind spot is he’s got a dude who was a decent DC under an excellent HC, who now has both jobs and has no one giving him real performance feedback. And is lousy doing both at the same time.

This is the flaw in the Bucs right now.

  55. Davyboy Says:

Without Tristan playing tackle out there, that first game against Atlanta, I am a little worried about James Pearce Jr. That guy is 6-5 250 lbs and runs a 4.47😳. I can see that being a major problem. I hope they have a very good plan to deal with him. He is TROUBLE on Bakers blind side.

  56. Oneilbuc Says:

I keep saying that Baker plays good in the regular season I have no problem with regular season Baker Mayfield it’s the post season in big moments is my my problem with Baker Mayfield. I’m pulling for Baker Mayfield and hope he can get us to a conference championship game this season and Superbowl next year.

  57. Davyboy Says:

The one thing that you miss Onei is that last sentence in the article.”The Bucs need to get better around him.” The “team” has to be good enough to get there. The mistakes in critical moments have to stop. We will get there, but it’s not ALL on the quarterback. A lot is on the quarterback but not all.

  58. It’s brutal out here Says:

It’s hard to stomach the fact that mistakes with Wirfs treatment protocol could be the difference in a year where so much is set to go the right way. Argh. Especially since if Baker gets hurt we’re toast.

  59. It’s brutal out here Says:

Given that how does Joe feel about Chukwuma? Another site is singing his praises to the moon but I’d love to hear what Joe thinks and whether he can be Wirfs successor down the road or at RT?

  60. Marky mark Says:

Some people say wins are a QB stat and others don’t. What i have found from social media comments is it depends on your predisposition of the QB. If you already m like them then wins are Not a QB stat. Best examples from peeps on thus board are Herbert, Fields, and Watson. All ff whom have win percentage regular and playoff less than Baker. Now if you already hated QB for way ever reason than you demand a super Bowl or cut the droid. That would be half the people on thus board about baker despite his High numbers in both seasons as a Buc and 2 seasons as a Brown.

  61. BatW Says:

Jason Licht saying a player is good to go is a cover job. Remember how he praised Braswell only to watch him play like crap so I don’t want to here it. Which leads to the story I just Heard. From my understanding Tristan has a Cartilage injury a Bone on Bone issue and he underwent an experimental procedure at a Cleveland facility. It could be that he is as good as he gets and it will never completely heal. Bucs fans this could be his last contract and his best is behind him. The Bucs Management has kept this Hush Hush and this is not a good sign
