A Howie Roseman Move In Tampa
August 5th, 2025
Bucs GM Jason Licht.
So Eagles general manager Howie Roseman is a slam dunk for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Joe believes.
He built a Super Bowl winner, then overhauled the Philadelphia roster and lost and won another Super Bowl with a different head coach. That puts Roseman in very rare company.
And what’s a core belief of Roseman? Drafting and collecting quarterbacks.
Roseman was on SiriusXM NFL Radio recently explaining how the quarterback position is so important, he believes it’s imperative to value them in the draft and to keep a deep stable — even when a team loves its other QBs.
“Maybe the most important position in all of sports,” Roseman said. “So we go through the draft process and we evaluate; we evaluate like we’re an expansion team. We don’t let bias get involved. I mean, we gotta fight that, but we can’t let that go.”
Roseman talked about the controversy in Philadelphia when the Eagles drafted Jalen Hurts in Round 2 of the 2020 draft soon after they re-signed QB Carson Wentz to a big contract. He said the Eagles stuck to their draft board and took Hurts at No. 53 overall.
“No team has benefitted from the backup quarterback position more than the Philadelphia Eagles in my 25 years in Philadelphia. And that’s time after time,” Roseman said, while possibly thinking of Jeff Garcia, Michael Vick and Nick Foles. “Sometimes that’s the difference between home field advantage in the playoffs. Sometimes it’s the difference between making the playoffs. Sometimes that’s the difference of winning a world championship. That’s the experiences.”
That hasn’t exactly matched the philosophy of Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht.
Obviously, Licht cares about quarterbacks, but he’s only selected two in 12 drafts. And Licht hasn’t been overly interested in accomplished backups since Ryan Fitzpatrick left the building following the 2018 season.
But that tide may have turned today when the Bucs signed Teddy Bridgewater. The former Pro Bowler and first-round pick (2014) has a winning record as a regular-season starter, 33-32, and has been successful coming off the bench.
Licht noted today the value in having a veteran in the QB room for Baker Mayfield, which had Joe wondering why that didn’t seem to be important last year.
Regardless, Joe loves the addition of Bridgewater. Smart move for a Bucs team with Super Bowl aspirations. And yeah, some of Joe’s appreciation is rooted in watching Kyle Trask struggle the past two weeks, often behind what looks like a sad second-team Bucs offensive line.

So Bridgewater is the next Hurts? Pfff, common Joe

Bridgewater still has it. I recall he was backup for the Lions to close out their season.

Kyle Trask will get his opportunity to shine against the Titans
We won both of our Super Bowls with key free agent signings
It’s possible that we have to go that route again

Listen , we all damn well know trask is NOT the answer . If he was , we would not have signed baker after Brady left . 2 glove teddy can win a game or 2 if needed . Also , Joe’s i am stuck in ohio , can you tell me who the second string lineman are that seem to be getting their struggle on please ?

The Bucs love to pick up guys they had their eye on. Like Baker, now Teddy and I’m sure there’s a few I’m forgetting. The question is who will be the inactive one on game day?

Teddy Bridgewater was one of the names on my list when Tom Brady retired, even if just to serve as a bridge for a year or two. No pun intended.
This seems like a solid FA signing at a position of need.
Don’t get me wrong. Baker has turned out to be a gem of a catch for us.
I certainly don’t want to see Baker get injured, but a part of me wants to see Kyle get a legitimate chance to show us what he can do on the field during the season.
Signing Teddy sends a pretty clear message about how the coaching staff and front office feel about that.

Joe’s going gaga over a 32 year old journeyman QB with a .500 career record.
August 5th, 2025 at 8:30 pm
I’d predict a pretty good battle for the #2 QB spot but Bridgewater probably wins. Not a sure thing. But I take exception Joe that this is a “ Howie Roseman move in Tampa”. I don’t think Licht or Bowles gave the Philly Formula one iota of thought when it came to signing Bridgewater. I believe this is one smart move made by Licht.

The staff continues to say they need a vet in the QB room….
Sounds to be me like this move is to help baker more so compete with trask
How many playoff wins does teddy have
GO BUCS

Hodad, I didn’t come away from Joe’s comments as anything more than the Bucs need an experienced backup QB. Teddy isn’t a starter for any team, but he is a better option to keep the team in the playoff hunt if Baker misses 2-5 games.

Power Play, get him off the market if Staffords Back falls apart in LA.
August 5th, 2025 at 9:13 pm
I believe Trask could come in and win some games if necessary and wish he had more opportunity during the time he was here.
But when a team has legitimate Super Bowl aspirations, if they could bring in a proven vet with 65 games of experience, it’s almost a no-brainer.
Had Baker smashed his hand on a helmet rather than on shoulder pads, it could have been a much worse outcome.
Maybe that incident helped convince the team to pull the trigger on this deal.

Sure- why not?
Trask isn’t the answer. At all.
Michael Pratt is a great prospect, but back problems always worry me.
Teddy adds experience, and a capable backup.
But if Baker goes down, no QB on the roster can carry this team.
Like so many teams- our future depends entirely on how far Baker Mayfield can carry the team.
Fortunately- he’s up to the task!
Just gotta keep him healthy!

Nick Foles took over when Wentz went down, and the Eagle won LII.
And, if Bridgewater is going to be a veteran asset in the QB room, it seems like Trask would get more from that than Mayfield.
Hopefully, Mayfield is healthy fandom good to go from wire to wire.
But, if the rest of the team is healthy and clicking, and Mayfield and Trask miss some big games, could Bridgewater go in and do as well as Foles did?
At least he would have a shot.

“Struggle”
August 5th, 2025 at 10:36 pm
A backup QB’s job by definition is to keep the team from sinking while the starter is out. If they pull a Jeff Hostetler or Nick Foles and win a championship while filling in that’s just gravy. But no one – including Howie Roseman – ever expects it to go down that way.
August 5th, 2025 at 10:46 pm
The way Baker plays…..it’s only a matter of time before he’s injured…..at least now they have a choice between Trask & Bridgewater if that happens.
Maybe Trask goes in on a game to game basis…..let’s hope Baker stays healthy.

best move ever

I think you’d gain more credibility if not every article was a puff piece. Every Bucs player is underrated, every move Licht makes is genius, Bowles is always being disrespected, etc.
I know this is a Bucs fan site, but think it would be much more fair, balanced and objective if there were more critical articles, for example one detailing Trask’s struggles or the poor 2nd team o-line, instead of burying those topics into yet another slobber fest.

Pretty much every local Bucs blog is a homer site – until the team starts losing. Then people shift and start complaining every post is too negative. If you’re looking for objective reporting stick to print and some national media. Homer sites are for fans to congregate to, for better or worse.

At this point Baker is a veteran QB. But yes I still like the Teddy signing.
August 6th, 2025 at 7:15 am
good move by the bucs, now they need to cut the other qb’s down the roster
August 6th, 2025 at 7:44 am
Put Teddy behind the same garbage second string OL that Trask has been dealing with and his knees won’t last very long. When Mayfield was out and Trask was working with the ones, reporters were saying that he had his “best day”. I have no problem with bringing in another arm, but if another offensive lineman goes down I wouldn’t expect Teddy to last very long either.

Lol you need to read one of the game-day threads. inVARiably, we’re like 5 plays in….”Baker SUCKS, CUT THAT TACKLE, EVANS IS WASHED, WHY DID WE WASTE A #2 ON THAT CORNER ..”
August 6th, 2025 at 10:07 am
Trask is QB2. Teddy is insurance. I Iike Teddy.
August 6th, 2025 at 1:19 pm
Solid move picking up Bridgewater, dude can ball.
If it wasn’t for his horrible knee injury he would’ve been a top 10 QB.
Solid backup with lots of experience with a high football IQ.
LFG BUCS!!!!!
Fire them cannons
