Will Shaq Barrett Get A Call?

July 28th, 2025

So nearly four months ago at the NFL Owners Meetings, Joe talked to superagent oily Drew Rosenhaus about Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett.

Would the Bucs icon continue his career this season?

Rosenhaus was adamant that Shaq would be back on the field in 2025. And Shaq was vocal last season, during his retirement stretch, that the Bucs were the team for which he wanted to play.

In late December, desperate for edge rush help, the Bucs turned to Shaq, pulled him of the couch and he was active in the playoffs. But Shaq did not get a new contract.

Now with rookie edge rusher David Walker blowing his knee out this week, might the Bucs turn to Shaq again?

It’s certainly possible, but Joe doesn’t think it would happen anytime soon. How could Shaq be among the top-5 edge rushers on the Bucs’ list to replace Walker? Surely the Bucs have other guys targeted, even if they’re on the bottom of someone else’s roster currently.

Joe’s not writing off Shaq, but Joe is confident that a phone call to Shaq, if it ever comes, would be several weeks away.

If he comes at the right price? Do it.

He doesn’t have to be a starter.

  2. El hefe Says:

Get him now let him actually workout for more than a week I bet he gets us at least 7 sacks coming off the bench

  3. Mike Says:

Can we let bygones be bygones? Not trying to sound harsh or rude I absolutely love shaq he means so much to this organization his on the field play was spectacular for about 3-4 years and off the field a even better person and what he went through with his daughter was heartbreaking but at this point shaq is done guy has a Achilles injury at 32 he’s now what? 34?

  4. BucsfaninOregon Says:

And so it goes for Walker. Our guy that was going to get us to the SB.

  5. Mike Johnson Says:

Barrett is done. He should let it go and go get a Physical Education teacher job. I don’t understand why many cannot give it up when they know its past time. Better to walk Shaq than be in a wheel chair.

  6. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

The only reason Shaq’s production fell off is because he lost his counterpart JPP on the other side.

Look it up, Shaq never produced without JPP in the game on the other edge to take some heat off Shaq.

Nobody else we had was as strong of a threat to the opposing offense as JPP.

Edge rushers need a strong guy on the opposite side to be really effective, otherwise the offense can focus on the one threat and neutralize him.

  7. First Last Says:

2 million dollars, one last ring for Shaq

  8. Biggun Says:

1 year prove it deal…. Alternant rotational guy. He still has the knowledge.

  9. ElioT Says:

Let’s go- grabs some pads and a helmet.

  10. LakelandBuc Says:

I rather call Matt Judon than Shaq Barrett

Judon has more in the tank
Shaq retired because he wasn’t feeling the game anymore

  11. mj Says:

they played better when he came in and he was an important part of their success in recent years i vote yes

  12. Obvious One Says:

    Typical… typical Buc Luck.
Not only that but Walker is already 25. By the time he learns how to be a pro player he’ll be 26 / 27 years old… Oh boy.

Now, we Really need Reddick to make “the difference”. It’s a sinking feeling when this type of thing happens. You can almost set your watch by the “training camp injury factor” and it’s usually a Bg One that we had put a great amount of faith in being a “difference maker”

Shak? Who knows… The truth is you don’t know until you try..

raid someone elses practice roster before signing Barrett who is toast

  14. Robert Azrak Says:

I second the idea of Judon at least for consideration. He was very good while at NE.

  15. Pmike Says:

    Ehhhhhhh

  16. @S00ner1981 Says:

Call Jpp I hear he wants to play again.

  17. Rod Munch Says:

I can’t imagine it would be more than a vet min with some performance bonuses, and if that’s the case, why not bring him in and see what shape he’s in.

Also, sure, bring in JPP and Simeon Rice as well – it’s training camp, really can’t have too many Super Bowl winners around, doesn’t mean they’ll make the team if they’re washed up, but having them in camp is more useful than the no-name future Burger King cook who has zero chance to even make the practice squad.

  18. PiratesLife Says:

    Arrrrrrg!!

  19. Brandon Says:

Moronic fans want us to sign a guy that doesnt play special teams to be our 4th or 5th edge rusher. Please just focus on hockey or whatever is being played now. Football ain’t for you

  20. garro Says:

Unless there is a dude who Jason trades for?

I looked at the list FAs today and aside from Shaq? Alot of older guys, with no names that I recognize as being sack artists. Maybe some after cuts.

    Go Bucs!

  21. Big Red Says:

Please bring ’em back. Pass rush packages only. I don’t wanna see him out there trying to cover Travis Kelce.
