Water Boy Chris Godwin

Rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka.

Bucs first-round pick rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka has been very impressed by his experience at One Buc Palace.

He shared a few nuggets today with The Rock Riley Show on WDAE radio.

Egbuka can’t wait to get to Monday, when the Bucs will wear pads in training camp for the first time this summer. NFL rules limit contact and there’s a mandated ramp-up period of underwear football.

“It’ll be hotter carrying more weight; it’s real football at that point,” Ebuka said of adding pads. “I’m looking forward to it.”

Joe was impressed when Egbuka brought up his rookie offensive coordinator without being asked. “[Josh] Grizzard has been super helpful in my development,” he said.

Remember, Grizzard is a former receivers coach and has worked with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

Egbuka also said Pro Bowl quarterback Baker Mayfield has wowed him even more than he expected. “One of the most competitive people I know,” Egbuka said of Mayfield.

And injured veteran receiver Chris Godwin, who has not practiced all year, has left a lasting impression on Egbuka for his egoless, team-first mentality. The rookie noted how stunning it is that it’s been Godwin in street clothes making sure he has enough water in practice and a towel.

“Chris has been kind of everything you would need in a role model. Kind of a big brother kind of scenario,” Egbuka said.

Joe gushed for months before the NFL Draft about Egbuka. And he’s looked the part of a No. 1 receiver through Bucs spring practices and three days of training camp, aka flag football. The No. 19 overall pick has looked so damn good it almost doesn’t feel real.

The reality checks of padded practices and preseason games are next for Egbuka, but don’t expect those to slow him down.

Just keep Logan Hall away from Ebuka and we should be ok.

Don’t wanna over think this too much because its a good problem to have, but let’s say Egbuka has 6/90 yards and a td his first game, similar output second game, lining up outside (which Godwin doesn’t do much of anymore) and the offense is pretty much a wagon. I mean, you can’t just sit him right. That’s madness. Is he better than 2019 Godwin, no chance unless proven otherwise. Is he better than 2025 oft injured Godwin who likely won’t play until week 4? Probably. Guessing 3/4 receiver sets will be used exclusively, which as an aside should really spread things out for Bucky. In any case I’m not a big fan of killing momentum, timing, rhythm just to work someone back in. Again good problem to have and will be interesting to monitor.

So far so good! Look forward to what happens with pads on.

I sure hope Chris can return and be himself but I expect it’ll be awhile before that’s possible.
I’d imagine, in the meantime, he would be the consummate pro and big bro type for the new guys. It’s the type of players we have, the culture we have, top to bottom… Team 1st!

We’re fortunate as hell to have a very talented roster with a stellar group of coaches setting the standard.

    Falcons 12-5 ????
… and the Bucs with the same offense and a better defense is only going to win four games??
That’s such an extreme troll comment.

We could end up only winning four games if three lineman, Mayfield, Reddick, David, our 1-4 WRs and Bucky all get put on IR game one.
