Todd Bowles On Edge Rushers: Let’s Get The Pads On
July 24th, 2025
Harrassed Bucs QBs today.
Though Joe didn’t have it in his notes but apparently Chris Braswell was credited with multiple sacks today in no-contact, underwear football.
Guessing the way quarterback Kyle Trask ran for his life a few times today, in underwear football that could be considered a “sack” —
Yes, Joe made a mental note that it’s July 24.
YaYa Diaby had a couple of sacks (and a strip!), too. So Bowles was asked after practice if he’s liking the newfound edge rush.
Bowles said in so many words, hold up. The pads aren’t on yet. This sudden edge rush may vanish quicker than Kenny Bell when the pads come on.
“It’s hard to do out of pads,” Bowles said of rushing the quarterback. “The offensive linemen can’t hit shoulder pads and grab and the defensive linemen, if they get an edge, you try not to hold the guy.
“That’s hard to judge at this point. It’s great they’re getting off the ball, but all of that comes into play when the pads come on.”
Underwear football is fun because it beats no football. And that’s why Joe always qualifies if a practice is underwear football. It’s not real football.
Underwear football is basically flag football. The only difference is that players in underwear football are wearing helmets.
The pads are scheduled to come on Monday. Then we’ll see what the Bucs have coming off the edge.

Penix can’t love seeing the Bucs week 1.
Big game, Bucs are going to be fired up and he’s got a lot of new bodies to account for on the Bucs D.
I’m less confident in the offense with Wirfs potentially but I think the D is gonna get after it. Plays are gonna be made.

I really hope they can give us sacks this season
Instead of a boat load of pressures

I’ll take a boat load of Superbowl champions!!! Perhaps Ya Ya has shared what Rice taught him. It seems like such a common sense way to rush the QB.

Nice to see Chris Braswell getting his name mentioned a few times. With his size & speed, if he develops just a couple of good moves he’ll have a solid year.

You who else could teach Yaya a thing or two, especially with a similar build and strength? JPP, he’d be in good hands taking a few pointers from him, wait

whenever i hear injury at edge or dl, i dont feel good even if the newspaper tells me not to worry
Bucs veterans report for training camp today, first practice Wednesday. In checking on players who were limited this summer, looks like DL Greg Gaines (undisclosed) and rookie OLB David Walker (hamstring) should both be good to go.

Matthew
What are you talking about?

Defense Rules, if Braswell has a solid year it would prove my initial inclinations totally wrong. But I would sure like to see my initial inclination totally wrong! Go Chris Braswell! Go Defense! Go Bucs!

^^^^^
I GOT A GUY WITH A SIMILAR BUILD …
Joe Greene (as in Mean Joe Greene – arguably the greatest DL in history). He’s a young 77.
Joe Greene – 6’3 270lbs
Yaya Diaby – 6’4 270lbs
July 24th, 2025 at 5:56 pm
Intriguing Sly,
Bruce Smith was also 6’4 265-270ish

wouldn’t this also be bad news for the oline?

Kenton … Braswell had to wait his turn at Bama, but he did reasonably well once in the starting lineup. As a Junior in 2023 Chris played in 14 games, logging 42 tackles, 8.0 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and 1 INT (returned for a TD). That’s not that shabby.
He didn’t do much last season, but not too many rookie edges do it seems. Still, he’s shown excellent speed (4.60 in the 40 at the Combine), and vertical (33.5″). He’s got decent size (6’3″ & 255 lbs), although I wouldn’t be surprised if he bulked up some this off-season. I think he’s gonna be fine.

Defense Rules,
If I see your name, I always stop to read your input. I agree with Braswell has a strong chance to break out this year. He got stronger, knows the system and absorbed the knowledge from his teammates and coaches. I have high hopes for the edge rush with Riddick, Diaby, Braswell and Walker.

DR is pretty good with a lot of things on here. I enjoy reading his posts too.

I am glad to hear something good about Braswell. After Hall’s first year I had zero hope for the guy, but he seems to have developed well. Maybe Braswell will develop too.

I’m with Todd on that one Joe.
Can’t tell jack about most of these parctices without some hitting. QBa, WRs and DBs Yeah. Everyone else? not much.
Punters?
Go Bucs!

Somewhere Kenny Bell takes exception to that comment.

Teaching the pass rushers to drop into empty zones and flail desperately at the guy who just caught the pass is a staple of this defense. The flailing part must be the new wrinkle.
