In keeping with five decades of Buccaneer football, I am counting down the 50 most notable players in franchise history. The lone criteria is their production in a Buc uniform.

No. 50 – Mark Cotney
No. 49 – Mike Washington
No. 48 – Richard “Batman” Wood
No. 47 – Aqib Talib
No. 46 – Ricky Reynolds
No. 45 – Keyshawn Johnson
No. 44 – Ricky Bell
No. 43 – Vincent Jackson
No. 42 – Mark Carrier
No. 41 – Donnie Abraham
No. 40 – Cadillac Williams
No. 39 – Joey Galloway
No. 38 – Kevin House
No. 37 – Davin Joseph
No. 36 – Shelton Quarles
No. 35 – Michael Pittman
No. 34 – Leonard Fournette
No. 33 – Donovan Smith
No. 32 – Rob Gronkowski
No. 31 – Doug Martin

No. 30. Baker Mayfield
With 69 TD passes in his first two seasons under center in Tampa, Mayfield already ranks seventh on Tampa Bay’s career list, only 11 behind No. 3 Josh Freeman. His 100.7 passer rating as a Buccaneer is No. 1, ahead of Tom Brady, and Mayfield set a franchise mark last season with a 71.4 completion percentage. Mayfield’s 19 wins are halfway to the club record for quarterbacks, accomplished by Trent Dilfer in six years.

29. Ndamukong Suh
Suh never missed a regular season or postseason start during his three years in Tampa. He recovered four fumbles in his first year (2019) with the Bucs after signing as a free agent, returning two for scores..Suh posted six sacks in each of the next two seasons. In the Super Bowl rout of the Chiefs, Suh led all players with 1.5 sacks.

28. Hugh Green
A 3-time All-America at Pitt, Green was the seventh overall pick in the 1981 draft after finishing second in Heisman voting. He started all 16 games in his first pro season, finishing third in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting behind Lawrence Taylor and Ronnie Lott. Green led the Bucs in tackles in each of the next two seasons, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors as an outside linebacker. During the 1982 season, Green’s 60-yard TD return of a fumble briefly put Tampa Bay ahead of Dallas in a playoff matchup.

27. Jason Pierre-Paul
JPP was a first-round pick of the Giants after an outstanding career at the University of South Florida. He played eight years in New York before the Bucs traded for him in 2018. In his four years in Tampa, Pierre-Paul registered 33 sacks, 8 forced fumbles, 35 tackles for loss and 55 QB hits. He wasted no time making his mark as a Buccaneer with 12.5 sacks in 2018. The following season, he posted 8.5 sacks despite playing only 10 games after suffering a neck fracture in a car accident. A year later, in the NFC title game at Green Bay, JPP dropped Aaron Rodgers twice.

26. Shaq Barrett
Barrett ranks No. 5 on Tampa Bay’s career list with 45 sacks. He led the league and set a franchise single-season record with 19.5 sacks in 2019, his initial season with the Bucs after signing as a free agent from Denver. He also forced six fumbles and was credited with 37 QB hits in 2019 while earning Pro Bowl honors. As a result, Barrett was ranked the 32nd-best player in the NFL in voting by his peers. In the 2020 season, he sacked Rodgers three times in the NFC championship game, then dropped Patrick Mahomes once in the Super Bowl. He also intercepted Jalen Hurts the following year during Tampa Bay’s playoff victory against the Eagles.

    That 2020 team was special

Hugh Green was a talent, his early numbers were better than Taylors, faster too. He should have won the Heisman that year no doubt about it. Too bad injuries and other things derailed him as well as a crappy owner that spun the team in circles. We’ve probably wasted more good talent during Culverhouse’s reign than any other team. Cept Cleveland

    Loving this series Ira!

    A couple of surprises here.
First Shelton Quarles was the defensive play caller, had cat like quickness that kept TEs as well as RBs in the pass game a non factor. Thought a bit more of him than 36. I’m also surprised you burned the 39 spot on Baker. Give it another 2 years and you’ll drop him in the teens.
I really suspect that he’s going to be right at the top of the league this year in; Yards, TD and again Percent completion.

    The 30 spot

  6. David Says:

Man, I wish we could’ve seen what a full career of Cadillac Williams would’ve been

  7. Jimothy Says:

Man I am really struggling to agree with Doug Martin ahead of Fournette and Cadillac.

Don’t get me wrong, Martin wasn’t a slouch but he wasn’t Cadillac or Playoff Lenny.
