Logan Hall And “Garbage Time Sacks”

July 6th, 2025

Sealing wins.

Garbage take on Bucs defensive lineman Logan Hall.

This offseason, Bucs coach Todd Bowles raved about how improved the former second-round pick was last year. Hall demonstrated an ability to get to the passer.

Bowles even bragged that Hall has pass-rushing moves that the Bucs haven’t yet unleashed. Naturally, Joe wondered, “What are you waiting for?”

Well, the social media account known as “Pick Em,” is down on Hall, no matter what Bowles had to say.

This “Pick Em” feed is not impressed with Hall’s 5.5 sacks last year, which tied Lavonte David for third-most on the team. Per “Pick Em,” too many of Hall’s sacks came in garbage time, when the game was largely already decided.

As regular readers know, Joe puts a significant amount of stock into sacks. And the way Joe looks at it, if a guy is getting sacks in garbage time, that’s closing the deal.

What, would the faceless “Pick Em” be happy with quarterbacks not getting sacked in garbage time, allowing a team a shot of coming from behind to win?

Heaven forbid a defender doesn’t want to keep the door open for a team to make a comeback.

This is simply an unfair critique of Hall.

Well, by this standard, Von Miller is just as bad, if not worse! I feel terrible now for the poor Bills fans who have to put up with all those garbage time sacks from Von Miller. smh

  2. Weebs10 Says:

    What a dumb stat lol

  3. TB_MikeB Says:

I think it’s a semi useful measure when compared to the totality of a players production. Not the be all end all, by any means. Hall was much improved and I’ll take those 2.5 sacks regardless of when they come. Go Bucs

  4. JimBobBuc Says:

Hall and the rest of the D need to step up at the end of one-score games.

  5. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Heaven forbid a defender doesn’t want to keep the door open for a team to make a comeback. This is simply an unfair critique of Hall.’

Wholeheartedly agree Joe that this is an unfair critique of Logan Hall. At the same time though, IF someone’s gonna even bother to keep stats like this, I can understand why Logan made their list.

Of his 5.5 sacks on the season, they all came in 4 games (Eagles, Chargers, Falcons, Panthers). A total of 3.5 of his sacks came in the 4th qtr of each of those games, and 2 sacks came in the 2nd qtr of 2 games.

Logan started out fairly hot (3 sacks in first 5 games), but went through a looong dry spell (no sacks games 6-13) before finishing with 2.5 more sacks in games 14 & 16.

Of the 2.5 sacks they said were his ‘garbage time sacks’, 1 sack was surely late in the 4th qtr against Philly with us leading 33-16. Another 0.5 sacks was in the Chargers game in the 4th qtr with us leading 37-17. And the other 1 sack was in the Panthers game in the 4th qtr with us leading 48-14. Could easily make the case I suppose that the other team had no chance of winning at that point, thus the ‘garbage time’ hit.

To me though, ‘a sack is a sack’. It’s not like the opposing team just lays down if they’re behind in the 4th qtr. Every sack has to be earned. I’m sure that there’s a lot of pride involved by every OLine in doing their best to protect their QB.

  6. BucfaninMi Says:

No such thing as garbage time. 60 minutes is 60 minutes. We’ve all seen miracle type come backs.

  7. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Nope, not buying it. Don’t care when the production came or what the outcome of the game was likely to be when it happened. Some times the best confidence boost for a player is doing something they’ve been working toward. That boost alone gives said player something to build on and fwiw 5.5 sacks playing only 50% of the defensive snaps all season is a win for Logan Hall. Don’t need the word of a digital sports book to validate that

  8. PowerOfPewter Says:

Getting garbage time sacks is better than not getting garbage time sacks. Hall has shown improvement but by bit each year, but Bucs fans have to accept that he’s not a Sapp or Suh. That’s OK, steady reliable journeymen like Will Gholston are also an asset to the team.

  9. BA’s Red Pen Says:

That is a dumb stat, no question, but who is Logan Hall? Never heard of him. Oh wait….Isn’t he that blocking dummy that is going to reunite with Jill Tyron in Cleveland in 26?

  10. toopanca Says:

The additions to the Bucs offense and defense should combine for more and greater Bucs leads with more garbage time and more “garbage time sacks”.

They seem to be looking through a microscope at one player without considering the game situations he may be playing in and the effects of those situations on the performance of the player.

  11. AJ Says:

Very unfair & biased reporting for sure Joe. The garbage time would be called blowing a lead time if not for them sacks. I don’t remember too many games last year where we were winning or losing by such a margin that it could be considered garbage time??

  12. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Ummm… Trey Hendrickson is on that list. Yeah- garbage. SMH 🤦

  13. Stpetematt Says:

A sack is only slightly relevant if it doesn’t stop a team from getting a first down. Drive killing sacks (typically on third down) are key.

  14. Stanglassman Says:

But the graphic was too cool not to publish.

I put this up there with QBs dropped interceptions. Either you threw a pick or you didn’t, got a sack or not.

  15. matthew a veal Says:

the concept is not too bad but the measurement is flawed.
a sack against an unhelped 2nd teamer or shaky starter may be weaker than one against a top shelf player. and st pete matt’s drive killing stat is also solid

  16. gotbbucs Says:

There’s no such thing as a garbage time sack.

  17. ballwasher61 Says:

Right on Bucsfaninamini, LOL. 60 minutes is 60 minutes.

  18. Nano107 Says:

    1/4 of Hendricksons
    What a garbage stat
Sack is a sack no mater what
    These dumbass analysts

  19. Anyhony Says:

All rejoice, he made a top 10 list!

  20. Rod Munch Says:

When you make plays is important – so I’m not sure if I’d consider this a garbage stat or not, would need more historical context and see if players high on this list continue to produce or just quickly flame out.

  21. ModHairKen Says:

A sack is a sack. In the first 10 seconds of the game or the last.

  22. ModHairKen Says:

At least that’s what Strahan said.

  23. Husted Wide Right Says:

Hall is one the Bucs better players. His All-22 in very impressive

  24. Usfbucs Says:

I hate when people call stats garbage time stats. Every player has “garbage time” stats. Stats are stats.

    YES %100

  26. Pickgrin Says:

JTS certainly didn’t get any garbage time sacks… LOL

  27. Saskbucs Says:

What do we call Hutchinson 4 sacks vs thrown in the fire Skule? A sack is a sack. They don’t put 2nd string tackle or game clock notes on your post game stat sheet.

  28. Aqualung Says:

    Stupid is as stupid does.

Love it that Joe keeps receipts too! Ask Conor Orr LOL!

    ——-

Now that is the definition of a garbage player sack … aka, the lawn chair stat, where a player’s effectiveness is compared to just putting a lawn chair on the field. Ryan Smith was another guy often compared to a lawn chair.

  30. Aqualung Says:

Hall has improved. He was an oaf his first two seasons, his most notable accomplishment was ruining the career of Ryan Jensen. But he’s learned how to fall down near the football and has become a poor man’s Will Gholston for us.

There’s room for a late bloomer. At least he isn’t regressing.

  31. freeballin34 Says:

Just wanted to correct whoever called Will Gholston a journeyman. Dude’s been with us from the very start.

  32. Aqualung Says:

No one called Gholston a journeyman. We’d be lucky for Hall to reach Gholston’s level.

  33. David Says:

If you’re getting sacks in “garbage time“ then you are getting them towards the end of the game which is showing that you still have something left in the tank to get after it

  34. FrontFour Says:

Garbage time. Hmmm. So, why not just call the games and let everyone go home early. On the flip side, how many times during a season do you hear coaches say, “You gotta play for 60 minutes.” Yup, Garbage time. Idiots.

Just wanted to correct Aqualung on his erroneous statement.

  36. garro Says:

Garbage time or not the guys blocking them were giving it there best shot. That is money out of their pocket and a pride thing Both!

What a lame thing for any fan to say!

    Go Bucs!

  37. Colonel Angus Says:

Stupid stat. I remember leading the Colts by 17 with 5 minutes left, only to lose in OT. 1 “garbage time” sack probably wins that game. Never stop playing.

  38. Krewe Since Birth Says:

You know what they call a doctor that graduated last in his class?

    “Doctor.”

You know what the stat lines call a “garbage time sack?”

    A sack.
