Day 1 In Pads For Haason Reddick

July 28th, 2025

New Bucs edge rusher Haason Reddick.

Edge rusher Haason Reddick’s savior role got enhanced when rookie fourth-round pick David Walker was lost for the season with a blown knee.

So what was Reddick up to today when the pads came on for the first time at Bucs training camp?

First, Joe was pleased to see Reddick line up on both edges.

Reddick looked quick to Joe in the early run periods. On one run, he got chipped just enough by rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka to slow him down. But Egbuka almost missed Reddick, which Joe took as an encouraging sign given how jacked up athletic Egbuka must have been for his first day as a pro in pads.

Reddick had no answer for Luke Goedeke in a couple of matchups in pass rush. However, Reddick beat backup right tackle Tyler McLellan outside with ease.

It’s interesting. Reddick clearly has been trained to pull up in training camp faster than most players do — the moment he cleanly beats his man. Hitting the QB is off-limits, but most players like to get closer to the QB than Reddick did once he got a clean shot.

With the extreme heat, there weren’t a ton of reps in 11-on-11, but Joe thought Reddick had a good-looking first day. He looked hungry, including against the run.

Joe will keep more of an eye on Reddick at tomorrow night’s indoor session in pads.

Joe Says, “Reddick had no answer for Luke Goedeke in a couple of matchups in pass rush. ”

Not sure if that sounds promising…..Reddick wouldn’t have an answer to Tristan Wirfs either.

  2. Pewter Power Says:

I hope he’s going to let these edge guys play one ONE side of the line this year.

  3. Bucsfan Says:

Licht needs to make a move to add edge before first game and this is absolutely necessary.

  4. Defense Rules Says:

Reddick is small for an OLB (only 6’1″ & 240 lbs) but that’s a great size for an ILB. Back in his first couple years with Arizona (in a 3-4 defense) he played ILB (weakside it looked like). Kinda gets me wondering if Todd Bowles might use some 4-3 alignments this year, with Vea, Kancey, Logan Hall & Diaby pass rushing, and LVD, SVD & Reddick providing pass protection on certain plays, with maybe a CB or Safety blitzing to help.

If we could get a decent pass rush with those 4 (plus maybe 1 blitzer), that could make the short passing game much more difficult for our opponents. And that’s precisely where they killed us last year.

  5. Allen Lofton Says:

Both Goedeke and Wirfs are outstanding at their positions especially Wirfs.

It’s only day one with pads

  6. Fan of the South Says:

For a Defense that was 29th against the pass they were still 16th in points allowed @ 22 per game. With an offense that scored a touchdown more per game teams should be playing from behind and passing more. If everything holds true to 2024.

With that Bucs defense that was 29th against the pass teams will probably be testing the secondary early and often. Except maybe the Panthers that will run the ball in the A Gap on first and second downs regularly.

Riddick will get plenty of opportunities to show whether he was a good signing or not.

Week 1 with TB vs ATL, CAR vs JAX and PHX vs NO will be quite informative and the NFC South could be 3-1 by the time all the games are played.

I think it is far too soon to worry…but also…Luke Goedeke is getting better and better, so there is that.

After yesterday’s temps, I’m surprised they were not indoors today.

Good to hear. Thank you for the intel!

Reddick has found his right fit team, the Bucs!

  10. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

In all fairness, Goedeke is a Top-5 RT in the NFL.

So, most of the top edge rushers in the league don’t have an answer for him either.

Goedeke better keep wearing that helmet shell, though!

Don’t be stupid, Luke. Wear that goofy looking shell and stay safe

  11. First Last Says:

No chance against Goedeke is encouraging but also kind of concerning. Though, that says a lot about our right tackle

  12. Hodad Says:

First two games indoors in domes. Yet the Bucs insist on beating themselfs up outside in dangerous heat conditions. If practicing outside gives us such an advantage in the heat, than why did a team from Denver with a rookie QB whip us at home in the heat the third game of the season last year? They certainly looked like the fresher team that day. Could it be we were worn down from practicing outside all training camp? Me thinks the answer is YES!!

  13. Coconut Doughnut Says:

    Luke is a stud

  14. Bucswin Says:

^Agreed. been watching them wear out our players in the heat since the start. How many northern teams come down to the heat and walk away with the W early in the season. Might be part of our mid season slump. Go Bowles

  15. Vanessa Anne Says:

So, we know we can line him up on either edge. Good.

We saw that he was quick. Good.

It appears he had a couple of clean shots at the QB. Good.

Paying attention to, but not concerned, that Luke was able to hold him up. It’s only the first day of padded practice, and Luke is a top tier RT, after all.

Only time will tell, but more and more I’m thinking Hassan is a team player who realizes he has an opportunity to play his way into a nice contract next year.

    Good for him. And us.

DR they started him at IL in Arizona and wasn’t until they moved him outside that he took off, which I’m sure you’ve heard. Now that’s not to say he hasn’t learned a lot of technique through the years, and it’s always smart to move your guys around to try to confuse the offense but I can see them putting him down in a 3 and standing a DL or some such trickery. To me, as soon as the offense see’s that they are gonna be in a hot read and release so our DB’s better be on top of that or we can get a blow by by a wideout for a big play or an open seam for a big play
