Bucs Training Camp Practice Day 1 Notes

July 24th, 2025

Mike Evans looks #AtlantaReady.

Need a bedtime story? How about training camp notes at midnight from Joe? Get your football fix in to stoke those Bucs’ Super Bowl-chasing dreams.

Caution: We are still in underwear football season. The pads are scheduled to come on Monday, subject to change, of course.

* Second play of practice against the “ones” (first-team), YaYa Diaby comes racing in from the left side. Promising start. Joe isn’t sure YaYa would have had a sack — no sacks in practice. But at the least YaYa came ready to ball Wednesday.

* Kyle Trask showed nimble feet (!) and dodged traffic to complete a short pass to Sean Tucker to the right side for maybe four yards.

* Former Florida State running back D.J. Williams, nephew of Edgerrin James and a Sebring native, rumbles through the line thanks to a nice hole inside right. (Again, real blocking is not permitted.)

* Same play, same result for former LSU running back Josh Williams. Bucs types have their eyes on this guy. Joe’s not saying he’s making the team, but Williams has the attention of the right people in the building and on the sidelines.

* Good morning, rookie: Benjamin Morrison, welcome to the NFL. Now you know what guarding a future Hall of Fame receiver is like. Mike Evans just smoked the Bucs’ second-round cornerback pick out of Notre Dame. Joe isn’t trying to make fun of Morrison. He’s a rookie and he will take his lumps and he will get better, no doubt. But what a move Evans put on the kid. It was a simple inside slant pass but not only did Evans have Morrison on his heels, the speed and quickness Evans used to dart to the inside to create separation and pluck the ball out of the air with his bare hands, holy smokes. Morrison had *no* chance. It was as if Evans stepped back into a time machine five years ago. No way Evans looked like a 32-year old receiver (next month). No way. But he will be next month.

* Now it’s Zyon McCollum’s turn to be abused by Evans. The best receiver in Bucs history got behind McCollum headed toward the far right corner of the end zone and used his big body to block out McCollum. Evans stretched those long arms to haul in the pass. Sweet.

* After those two plays, Joe almost wanted to put Evans in bubblewrap until September. You know he’s going to tweek a hammy once the calendar turns to August. It’s not training camp until Evans has a hammy issue.

* Rachaad White runs in a touchdown to the right from 10 yards out.

* Sean Tucker muscles his way up the middle for a touchdown.

* Bucs are taking it easy on the starters today. The scrubs are getting a lot of snaps Wednesday morning.

* Markees Watts makes his summer debut. The long-time outside linebacker of weekday warrior fame, Watts grabbed a running back (Joe didn’t catch the number), pulled the guy back toward the line and then Watts swallowed him up like an octopus in a cheap 1950s science fiction movie. You know it’s summer when Watts makes a play on the field because that’s the only time he can get on the field.

7-on-7

* Baker Mayfield hits Cade Otton on the right side with a short pass. So Otton’s broken a sweat.

* Mayfield misses Evans on a wide throw to the right sideline. McCollum on defense.

* Mayfield short right to Emeka Egbuka. Joe’s telling you, this kid is smooth.

* Tykee Smith gets a pass breakup. The way the offense was having its way in the passing game (specifically Evans), Smith’s breakup brought some hoots and hollers from his defensive teammates trying to have a better showing.

* Trask tries to hit Payne Durham but they couldn’t hook up.

* Juggling with Sterling Shepard: This was fun. Trask hits Shepard with a really good pass down the right seam. But Shepard had trouble getting a handle on the ball. Shepard kept juggling the ball but Shepard also continued running his route. The ball was headed in the same direction as Shepard. Finally, Shepard got a hold of the ball after juggling it for maybe four or five steps. Good concentration there by the veteran receiver.

* Devin Culp with a monster catch-and-run down the left sideline from camp meat quarterback Connor Bazelak. Joe still thinks Culp has the biggest upside of any of the Bucs’ tight ends, and that’s not a knock on the other tight ends.

11-on-11

* Nimble Kyle Trask II: The Bucs’ backup signal-caller is showing some nimbleness. He gets pushed back into the pocket and Trask sort of fades back, off balance and throws off his back foot and hits a wide ass open Evans over the middle just about perfectly.

* White fights for some tough yards on the ground.

* And here is when the Bucs’ defense starts to rise up: Bryce Hall, who played a whole half of football against Washington in the season-opener before he too blew out an ankle just like Chris Godwin did, got the ball rolling Wednesday for the defense with a pick-six.

* Cornerback Josh Hayes (!) breaks up a pass intended for the immortal Kameron Johnson down the right sideline. Joe thought it should have been a catch.

* Here is when Antonio Winfield got sick and tired of his secondary getting lit up by Evans all morning. Mayfield throws to Evans along the right sideline. It was not a bad pass. It was actually good defense (for a change) from the Bucs, in this case, McCollum. The Sam Houston State product didn’t give up on the ball and fought Evans for it as the ball popped up in the air. Just a razor’s edge before the ball hit grass, Winfield dove in and got the ball and somehow kept two feet inbounds. Then, Winfield smartly got up and housed it. The offense thought it was incomplete and gave up. Pick-six!

* Winfield wasn’t finished yet laying down his law. On the very next play, Mayfield really overthrew Evans and Winfield was there for the pick and the pick-six.

* With Hall of Fame corner and Colorado coach Deion Sanders on the sidelines watching his son Shilo Sanders, who is a Bucs’ undrafted free agent safety, it was as if on those last two plays, Winfield pointed to the turf of the practice fields behind One Buc Palace and hollered at Deion, “My house!”

Night, night, Bucs fans.

    Awesome job Joe. Thank you.

Expect exotic deeper shell passive and even more soft zones in 2025. Can’t have anyone ever getting beat deep. That Evans abuse must have Todd worried about his lab fix already.

  3. Brandon Says:

Sanders isn’t a Hall of Fame safety, Joe.

Joe, thanks so much for doing this.

It sounds like our offense had a good day.

The D? Maybe not so much, although it’s encouraging to hear that Antoine was apparently looking like his old self.

As the mortal Rick Flair woud say….Wooo!

I think maybe all the what happened to AWJ talk will stop now. Anybody besides Watts get close to Baker or Trask? Asking for a friend…

    YaYa.

  14. BucaneroJim Says:

Always struck me Trask is more mobile, than given credit by many here. Is he crazy mobile like Baker, no. But he is no statue, either. Seems pretty accurate passing when rolling out or fading back.

  15. RiddlemyPeter Says:

my peter is standing at attention on this

  16. My Momma Says:

  19. Enkd Says:

Uhh Brendon , Deion Sanders was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2011 so you’re today’s year old just finding this out.

    Do better next time

  20. My Momma Says:

I thought about that, Fred, but Joes got skunky beer now.
