Bucs Training Camp 2025 Day 4 Practice Notes

July 27th, 2025

The Bucs finally got a real-feel, Florida-like training camp practice.

Today at One Buc Palace, for the first time through four days of camp, it felt like Florida in late July. The previous days either had some cloud cover or it was windy to the point the heat wasn’t really noticeable.

Today, you noticed the heat. Welcome to Florida.

Also today, Bucs defensive backs outsmarted a Bucs quarterback for some of Todd Bowles’ favorite gifts: picks. And a guy Joe has been typing has a big upside, may be starting to realize it.

* Still underwear football. That is scheduled to change Monday as the pads finally come on.

* Jalen McMillan hauls in a pass from Baker Mayfield along the right sideline for a short gain.

* Big hole for Bucky Irving on the left side. The pads come on tomorrow so we will see if there are still holes like that to run through.

* Rachaad White up the middle.

* Mayfield throws a cock-high fastball to Evans over the left seam and it’s a can on corn for Evans who just reached over, looking like he lifted the ball off his hip. Easy money.

* Sean Tucker catches a pass from Kyle Trask near the right sideline.

*  Misdirection on a handoff to undrafted rookie free agent Josh Williams up the middle. Next play, Williams runs it up the middle again. They are watching.

* Third-string (for now) quarterback Connor Bazelak leads Sean Tucker a bit too far up the left sideline but Tucker stretches out and makes a helluva catch.

* Bucky around right end.

* Mayfield to Evans over the middle. Evans was wide ass open.

* Sterling Shepard hauls in a Mayfield pass over the middle.

* Ah, so McMillan can fight in traffic, too. Mayfield threw such an ugly wounded duck Joe has to believe it was tipped. The ball came straight for McMillan, who was in a crowd, but he skied and pulled the short pass to the right in.

* Bucky with a big gain to the left side.

* Mayfield with a quick-hitter to Payne Durham over the middle.

* Tucker stutter steps, then throws into overdrive, with a nice run up the middle.

* Trask throws really low to the right, but Shepard is able to dig it up for a catch.

* FUMBLE! Josh Williams runs right and looks to be running through the defense. But no! He doesn’t like the ball in his hands. It almost looked like Williams just flat out dropped the ball. Josh Hayes (!) looked like he found a $10 bill just lying on the sidewalk walking by. Reached down and picked up the ball.

* Arrow pointing up: Mayfield flips the ball to the left sideline sort of medium range, where Devin Culp got past a defender. Culp caught the ball and housed it down the left sideline for about 70-80 yards. Devin Culp. Upside. First team reps. Big touchdown. Do the math.

* Bucky catches a short pass from Mayfield to the left.

* Today, Bucky is getting a lot of touches. Friday it was Rachaad White. Last week, each had another practice where he got the majority of touches. Is that planned? Maybe. White told Joe after practice the amount of touches really doesn’t matter. Lot depends on how offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard calls the plays that day. Coaches want to keep him and Bucky fresh and eventually, the practice touches will all even out.

* Mayfield throws too short for Mike Evans to the right.

* Strong play by rookie corner Jacob Parrish. Trask was trying to float a ball over his head to Tez Johnson, who did get behind Parrish and was open near the right sideline. But Parrish made a helluva recovery, put his back to Trask, dove out and caught the ball for a pick. Very, very nice. Joe almost thought Parrish had baited Trask but he told Joe after practice that was not the case.

* On a crossing pattern from right to left, Trask throws behind Johnson but the little Duck still was able to make the catch.

* Trask hits the immortal Tanner Taula in the bread basket over the middle.

Red zone

* Mayfield tries for Evans over the middle and it’s just a bit too tall, even for Evans.

* Bucky runs right and houses the ball.

* Josh Hayes (!) nearly had a pick (!) of Mayfield. Looked like Mayfield was aiming for Johnson in the middle of the end zone.

* Trask hits Devin Culp in the middle of the end zone and Culp spreads his arms wide in celebration.

* PICK! Trask again tried to float a pass over a defensive back, aiming for Ryan Miller in the far right corner of the end zone. But Tykee Smith had other ideas. From Joe’s angle, it appeared that Smith reached over with his right hand and snagged the ball. Good sticky glove.

11-on-11

* Mayfield tries for Evans down the left seam and the ball is just off Evans’ fingertips.

* Mayfield hits Evans on a short pass to the left.

* Mayfield pumps, waits and finds Emeka Egbuka open for a short pass to the right.

* Shepard hauls in a short pass to the right.

* Shepard again, this time from Trask, down the left sideline.

* Johnson with a catch from Trask to the right flat. Lot of traffic there and Johnson doesn’t go far at all. Maybe got back to the line.

* Anthony Nelson had Trask sacked but there’s no hitting in underwear football so Trask got to scramble away.

* And here comes the pass rush.

* C.J. Brewer flushes Trask.

* Egbuka catches a pass from Mayfield along the right sideline with Lavonte David in coverage.

Red zone

* Mayfield aims for McMillan but it was broken up. Joe couldn’t catch the number of the defender. May have been Tykee Smith.

* Mayfield dumps the ball off to Bucky who runs left.

* White takes a handoff from Mayfield and begins to run right but then quickly darts up the middle for a nice gain.

* Trask to the corner of the end zone… no.

* Tucker up the middle.

* Trask connects with Johnson in the end zone over the middle and Johnson holds the ball out for all to see who scored.

* Trask throws right and it is way, way short. Kindle Vildor dove for the ball and he may have had a pick. Too close to call if he trapped it or not.

Tomorrow morning, the Bucs finally put the pads on. As Todd Bowles said Sunday, real football.

A cock-high fastball turns into a can on corn?

I am not sure what that means but it sounds like something from the Epstein files.

    LOL

  4. PSL Bob Says:

Larrd, glad you called Joe out on that one! LOL

  5. Vanessa Anne Says:

Joe, thank you for the notes.

Our TE room is solid! As I’ve said before, Devin made the most of his limited playing time last year. Payne is also showing promise.

I haven’t seen any tape, but from all accounts, rookie RB Josh Williams is coming on strong. I don’t see us trading Rachaad befor or during the season. He’s too valuable as a backfield receiver. But he may find himself as a free agent at the end of the year.

Sounds like Jacob did exactly what we drafted him to do.

JMac had a couple of catches late last year where he had to fight in traffic. I think he’s a solid depth piece, with some upside a year or two down the road.

    That’s enough for now.

  6. First Last Says:

    Joe, in reference to this:

    * Josh Hayes (!) nearly had a pick (!) of Mayfield. Looked like Mayfield was aiming for Johnson in the middle of the end zone.

    Which Johnson? Kam or Tez?

  7. Lt. Dan Says:

    Josh Williams…I’m watching too.

  8. Lt. Dan Says:

Devin Culp: Been banging the drum all summer for Culp.

  9. Joe Says:

    Which Johnson? Kam or Tez?

That was the second reference to Johnson. The first reference includes his first name.

  10. Donald G Says:

    Donald gets it. 🙂

  12. Calogero Says:

I predict that Kameron Johnson will become receiver #3 before the end of the season. Keep an eye out for him. He is electric.

  13. ballwasher61 Says:

🤣🤣🤣 Apparently you’re unfamiliar with the Bucs depth chart at WR. The only way he gets to #3 is by a series of injuries. Right now, he’s 6th at best if there was a depth chart.

But I think the guy has skills and could be a good player, but the numbers are not in his favor to even make the roster. I’d like him over Shep, but over Tez? Have you seen Tez’s highlights? Talk about electric.

Great to get the low down on the eve of PADS Joe!

    LFG!

    Go Bucs!

    Great notes!

“White and Tucker up the middle” – I think it all planned on the touches too. Oh no, a fumble/dropping the ball by Williams. Giving him a pass on that. He has been doing very well.

Cannot wait for the “pads on” notes!

  20. JimBob Says:

Not much from Egbuka. How does he look

  21. Jerseybuc Says:

Filthy animal 😂😂total agree. No way In hell kam takes the 3 spot.
Come on man receive room is absolutely loaded if Johnson is Bucs 3rd receiver we’re in trouble means alot of injuries

  22. Marky mark Says:

Be prepared to pick.up one of the Browns cast offs at QB after Labor day.

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    “They are watching.”

Williams better be the best thing since Warrick Dunn with the way you are hyping him, Joe, lol.

I saw on another source a quote from Josh Williams: “I always feel like….somebody’s watching ME…”
