Bucky Irving Talks Patience, Doubters And A Big Workload

July 28th, 2025

The Bucs kick off the regular season in 41 short days.

And there’s a great chance they’ll be handing off 20 times or more that day to their big-dog running back in Atlanta.

Like most Bucs fans, Joe is riveted every time Bucky Irving gets the ball. He’s that electric. Joe used to be captivated by kicker Roberto Aguayo the same way, though that was for all the wrong reasons.

Irving told CBS Sports HQ today that he expects the same kind of success he had during his stunning rookie campaign last year. A big reason, Irving said, is he had the same lunch-pail kind of offseason, “not getting complacent, always working.”

Irving knew he had a load of skeptics last season as a fourth-round draft pick, but nothing on the field he did surprised him.

“I knew all the work that I put in — in the dark. When nobody’s watching, I’m always working,” Irving told Pete Prisco. ” … I loved all the doubters, everything they were saying about me. I’ve been doubted my whole life. So just being able to get to this level and doing what I did, it always comes from hard work.

Todd Bowles told the Ira Kaufman Podcast last week that the Bucs have zero intention of limiting Irving’s carries.

“We’re not going to manage him,” Bowles said of Irving. “We’re going to let him go. He’s got young legs. We’re going to let him run.”

Irving said today that he can handle any workload. He also smiled when asked about the prospect of getting a lot of touches and a great feel for a specific game.

Negative runs are ok, Irving stressed, as long as a running back keeps them in perspective.

“At running back, you just gotta be patient,” he said. “It’s a patient position. Not every run is going to be a touchdown run. You’ve got to take some dirty runs every now and then.”

Individual goals for Bucky? He’s got none, he said, just Ws.

    We got good RBs

They all have their advantages, and disadvantage
But we need to play the three of them in certain situations
It don’t make sense to make a Bell -Cow of. Bucky
When you have other RBs that can move the ball
The key to NFL wins, is the offense ability to move the ball.
And the longer the drive is better for the defense, and the team

    Bottom Line

Great teams utilize all of their weapons

The possibility of great compliments to each other will be the Tag team duo of Bucky and Tucker will be a lot of fun to watch as a fan but a major headache for the teams on our schedule.
Young powerful legs with agility and speed.

    LFG BUCS!!!!!!!!

    Fire them cannons

I see a 200 yard (rushing) game in his near future.

  4. KABucs Says:

Love his attitude, and lucky for us a lot of our players have that attitude. Hard to pick a favorite on that offense OR defense.

Wow, I missed that. If the fantasy football geeks hear that line, he’s going to shoot up the rankings. Hopefully it stays quiet until after I get through my drafts that mean something.

  7. Stpetematt Says:

Yeah- I’m hoping that stays quiet too while I just moved him up about 6 slots in my RB tiers. Maybe more…with no holding him back he will get 1800+ yards rushing and 600+ receiving. Nuts.

  8. Hodad Says:

Jimmy Johnson would say about Emmett Smith’s work load, you ride the horse till it dies, than you get another horse! Ride Bucky, ride.

    Go Bucky go!

  10. SB Says:

Is it gonna be Tucker or Williams?
    Do we keep 4?

  11. BillyBucco Says:

    I bet we keep 4.
Williams is too valuable in short yardage.

  12. mj Says:

he needs 20 carries to break a couple

  13. heyjude Says:

  14. BigBucsFan Says:

I heard of him talking about two goals this year. W’s and reaching 2,000 yards which he thinks is a very attainable goal
