Todd Bowles Thinks Bucs Have Better Chemistry

June 11th, 2025

Bucs coach Todd Bowles watches practice inside the Glazer Shed Tuesday.

Joe thought this a bit odd coming from Bucs coach Todd Bowles yesterday.

After underwear football practice, the first of three for minicamp week, Bowles remarked that he believes the Bucs have better chemistry than last year.

“I think there’s more chemistry coming in, because the guys have been together for a year and it’s been a lot of the same guys and they welcome the new guys, as well,” Bowles said. “Going forward, we’ll continue to develop the chemistry and the confidence will come as they make each other better.”

So for Bowles, confidence sprouts from chemistry. So what is chemistry?

That’s a weird question to answer. Only teams know if they have good chemistry once the season starts. It’s like it grows naturally. You can’t plant guys on a roster and say, “This is a good dude. He will bring chemistry.”

Doesn’t work like that.

Why didn’t the Bucs have good chemistry last year when they won the NFC South (again) and had one of the best offenses in the game? Bowles said injuries screwed up the chemistry.

“A lot of new guys had to play here and there,” Bowles said. “Hopefully we can stay healthy and it continues to build even more.”

That’s the goal. The offense brings back 11 starters and added a guy Baker Mayfield suggests has fit perfectly in the Bucs’ ecosystem, receiver Emeka Egbuka.

But that pass defense, better pass coverage, getting to the quarterback from the edge — it has to improve. Will that happen because there is chemistry or dudes balling?

Joe will settle for dudes balling. They can all hug each other after a win for chemistry.

Maybe Joe’s Chemistry is singing kumbaya or having beers together at Hooters?

It sounds like Bowles’ Chemistry = Communication+Trust

Especially in the secondary, the DB’s need to communicate the coverages and trust that the other guy has the receiver covered. No blown coverages. CB’s can undercut routes knowing the safeties have their back. How are bunch receiver sets defended?

How will our receivers read the defense on choice routes? Will Bake and a receiver read it the same way and does Bake trust the receiver enough to throw on timing before the break?

    …they make each other better.”

    “You complete me.”

Add a little biology to that chemistry and they can more than just friends, or pre-med majors

Joe … ‘Better pass coverage. Getting to the quarterback from the edge. It has to improve’.

We’re certainly starting with what seems like better ‘pieces’ to work with Joe. As it stands right now, I’d put my money on Dean, McCollum, Morrison, Bryce Hall, Parrish & Izien to be our 6 CBs, plus Winfield, Tykee Smith, Merriweather plus 1 other to be the Safeties in our 2025 Secondary (10 guys). There’s a LOT of talent in that group. They just need to stay healthy. Easier said than done apparently based on last year’s situation.

    i think he means versatility

Every year there are a group of guys 1 year older.
I think that statement must be talking about the offensive scheme not changing.
If Bowles is happy, Im happy!!!

Sorry I gotta disregard most of what Todd says to the media. Particularly this kind of stuff at this time of year. He won’t let Tampa media close enough to the fileld to find out much of anything. Sorry but I do not trust this guy anymore.

    Go Bucs!

  7. geno711 Says:

It sure seems that Bowles is trying to get away from cliches a little bit — although like all football players they are always mixed in.

    Last year might have been:

Our veterans in here, they know what it takes. The new guys are learning.

    This year:

I think there’s more chemistry coming in, because the guys have been together for a year and it’s been a lot of the same guys and they welcome the new guys, as well. Going forward, we’ll continue to develop the chemistry and the confidence will come as they make each other better.

    Next year:

You know, it’s fascinating, really. What we’re witnessing is the organic crystallization of shared experiences and collective purpose. A year ago, we were planting the seeds of understanding, of foundational trust. Now, you see the roots run deep. The veterans, many of whom have endured numerous campaigns together, exhibit an almost telepathic understanding on the field, anticipating movements, covering nuances without a spoken word. The integration of new talent is no longer a challenge but an amplification. This continuous, almost symbiotic process, is truly the bedrock of our sustained competitiveness. It’s truly something to behold.

OR LIKE JOE SAID: Joe will settle for dudes balling. They can all hug each other after a win for chemistry.

Gotta love Bowles!! Several players have stated that this locker room is a close knit bunch. That’s important when you put a championship drive together. Love what Todd is telling the media. Go Bucs!!!

    Boilerplate pre season coach narrative.

I just found out something hilarious. There’s a site that tracks all things Browns called “factory of sadness” lololol

  11. Teacherman Says:

Do you know what will help the pass coverage?

    The Tampa 7!

    Swarm! Swarm! Swarm!

    Rush 4.

    Drop 7 DBs.

    4 corners. 3 safeties.

    LFG!

    Haha!! 😆

  13. Aqualung Says:

Stop a bloody slant pass. Cover someone tight on 3rd and 5. Heck, cover anyone, on any down. Todd talks about chemistry, I’d really like him to talk about the disaster that was the redskins playoff game and never ever once forcing a punt from a team with a rookie QB who everyone else in the world but the Bucs knew were happy with 4 yard plays and going for it on 4th and short all game long. Let’s hear him talk about how he will adjust the defense to prevent small ball atrocities.

  14. AnotherJoeBucsFan Says:

Third and long Defense: Rush 5 (Reddick, Kancey, Vea, Hall, Diabi). Drop 6 DBs (McCollum, Parrish, Winfield, Smith, Morrison, Dean. Call it Sack & Stack!

  15. AMI_Chris Says:

Holy cow! That picture of Bowles…it looks like someone stuck an air hose in his mouth.

@geno711, you make these fine players sound so altruistic. Your waxing poetic helps negate my cynicism of the millionaire entitled college athlete only looking for his next big payday. The Davids and Godwins of the game reminisce of time when players played for the love of the game…but then again, their pulling some handsome bank as well

Detroit showed us what a well coached team with a dedicated DC could do in spite of injuries…..just like you predicted, right @aqualung? 🙄

Expect the Lions to treat Jayden Daniels the same way they treated Sam Darnold. The Lions are more injury decimated than the Bucs. Dan Campbell’s solution is to play press man because it’s the simplest scheme to execute and play fast. No mental gymnastics to speak of. Undoubtedly he will also have a double spy on Jayden at times while covering the fargin tight end over the middle. Lions win by at least two scores and provide yet another lesson on what a good coach looks like versus what an academia looks like.

    Nailed it 🤣

  19. Aqualung Says:

What was the Lions record last year, gone gord? It’s obvious goon doesn’t watch the games. The Lions lost to the Redskins with the injury decimation that they’d previously won with. The difference was Goff picked the worst time to soil the bedsheets on national tv, his worst game as a Lion.

    Campbell > Bowles

And Campbell takes accountability and makes no excuses. Maroon is as maroon does. Nice try, though. The village might have a role for the goonor , soon.

  20. Aqualung Says:

And btw – obsess much, quoting a 5 month old post?! Seek medication.

  21. GoneGator Says:

One of MANY stupid posts you’ve made – not my fault you’re quotable due to you’re own idiocy. Pick out your new name yet?
