Disappointing
June 17th, 2025If this is the standard for disappointing, then folks have the wrong target.
The crowd at The 33rd Team decided to rank the most disappointing player on each team. Strangely, the publication believes Jamel Dean is the most disappointing in Tampa.
Now this is where Joe’s disconnect with a lot of fans come into play. Joe doesn’t think Dean is that bad of a corner. Joe guesses if you value accidents by quarterbacks (picks) more than solid defensive play, then yeah, Joe can see where folks cannot stand Dean.
But what is the biggest hangup for Dean? Dean is off the field too much, too many injuries. Joe thinks he plays fine… when he’s on the field. And that’s the catch.
For example, the Bucs were 1-4 last year when Dean missed a start. Coincidence? Joe doesn’t think so.
So if Dean is the team’s biggest disappointment because he misses games, how does SirVocea Dennis get a pass? Since he was drafted in 2023, Dennis has missed 17 games with injuries (and not just his shoulder).
We saw what the Bucs’ pass defense in the interior was like without Dennis.
Joe hopes Dennis (and Dean) stays on the field this fall. The Bucs are really rolling the dice, banking on Dennis to play, say, 15 games.
(And since The 33rd Team listed players departed from teams (see: Seattle), then how could they list Dean over Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, a former first-round pick?)
June 17th, 2025 at 7:11 am
Shoulda been JTS, he never produced. Dean is a good CB when he plays.
June 17th, 2025 at 7:12 am
Can’t forget to add Kancey to that list. Missed the first 3 games his rookie season and another 5 to start last year’s season.
In other words, ridiculous!
The most disappointing player is no longer on the team – Joe Tryon. I’d have picked Palmer, myself.
June 17th, 2025 at 7:18 am
We were beating the Redskins before Dean left the game.
And we were forced to play Hayes.
And we would have beat the Lions the year before if Dean hadn’t been hurt.
Two playoffs games. And we lost both because we didn’t have a legit backup to Dean and Zion.
Now?
We have Parrish, Morrison, and Bryce Hall as backups.
Finally!
I’ve been screaming for CB depth since the years of Brent Grimes!!!
June 17th, 2025 at 7:28 am
Hate to say it. Winfield.
June 17th, 2025 at 7:42 am
Yes, Winfield has been a bust since he got overpaid. If Dean is so good when he does play-why does he play 10 yards off of every receiver he covers? This Putrid Pass Defense needs to improve this year, or it will be a disappointing season.
Go Bucs!!
June 17th, 2025 at 7:43 am
How much does Dean make compared to Dennis?
Dean is the biggest disappointment.
June 17th, 2025 at 7:45 am
Joe … ‘For example, the Bucs were 1-4 last year when Dean missed a start. Coincidence? Joe doesn’t think so.’
I must be missing something because tht sounds to me like Jamel is a difference-maker. Granted he doesn’t intercept many balls, but last I remember that wasn’t the biggest goal of the game; winning was. And when Dean’s in there, we win more than lose.
And like Teacherman said, we lost 2 playoff games in 2 years because ‘we didn’t have a legit backup to Dean and Zion’. This year we do.
And for the record, Jamel has played in (and started) 25 games in the past 2 years. Not great to say the least, but he’s not alone. Jaire Alexander has played in a total of 14 games in the past 2 years. Jalen Ramsey has only played in 27 games. And our beloved Carlton Davis also only played in 25 games past 2 years. Hmmm, 3 ‘older’ CBs with declining availability. Must be something in the water.
I know that PFF doesn’t get much love for their rankings, but they did an article (‘PFF Cornerback Rankings: Top 32 ahead of the 2025 NFL season’) just a couple weeks ago on this. Jamel Dean ranked #17 in the NFL on their list. Here’s their writeup …
’17. Jamel Dean, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Consistency is highly valued in the NFL, and there might not be any cornerback more consistent year-to-year than Dean. His worst season resulted in a 72.5 PFF overall grade, while his best produced a 78.9 figure. He ranks 11th in PFF advanced coverage grade over the past two seasons and did not allow a touchdown in coverage in 2024.’
Don’t write him off yet.
June 17th, 2025 at 8:00 am
Disappointment on account of his absence, not disappointment because his play has fallen off a cliff.
Still one of the most uniquely built CBs in all the league, and if he’s healthy the speed and size are still assets to the defense.
June 17th, 2025 at 8:01 am
How does Dennis get a pass? Easy. Nobody including me and you, has seen Dennis on the field so how can we be disappointed when we haven’t seen his play on the field? And Dean has been a starting CB of ours making top shelf money for years now. That’s why. Dumb question.
June 17th, 2025 at 8:02 am
Dean is a good cornerback when he plays and he looks ripped this year.
The good news is it doesn’t matter if he plays or not because somebody good is chomping at the bits to play.
We think our starters are Dean and McCollum, but at the end of the year, it might not be either one off them.
Fine by me if we don’t have to pay McCollum.
We got good value from him as a 5th round pick.
June 17th, 2025 at 8:10 am
Dean has a big contract is the thing
June 17th, 2025 at 8:16 am
SVD can’t be most disappointing because he wasn’t a top pick, 153 in 5th round. Anything you get out of that pick is gravy. That being said, he’s my favorite Buc when he’s health, so with our inside knowledge, ok I guess he’s disappointing. Not sure Dean is all that great even healthy though, despite the 1-4 record. He wasn’t the only one hurt during that stretch.
June 17th, 2025 at 8:17 am
Pretty good list tbh. The only one I disagree with is Cole Kmet. He’s an excellent player, but I’m not sure what you would expect when they brought in all those receivers and a rookie qb, he is t gnna put up prime Antonio gates numbers.
I like how they put CJ stroud in there too. A lot of people from last yr that were way too “hehe & haha” over how much better he was than Bryce young over 1 yr are now nowhere too be heard. One person is trending way up, the other one is named CJ stroud.
June 17th, 2025 at 8:17 am
Dean is soft.
June 17th, 2025 at 8:24 am
Coach said he wants ” Ball Hawks”. Move on from Dean and reallocate the 13 million saved to a corner that is a proven ball hawk , because Dean is not.
June 17th, 2025 at 8:32 am
Dean is a veteran who has been to a super bowl and should have been better the last three seasons. JTS was an over-drafted special teamer. We’ve known his ceiling for years. Dean is still more disappointing than JTS. Missed a lot of games and didn’t produce much when he was there.
June 17th, 2025 at 8:34 am
Decent coaching compensates for injuries with simplification of assignments, so the scrubs don’t have as much to think about.
June 17th, 2025 at 8:55 am
i’m sure that for the past several years the most disappointing player has been on the defense. a couple of years ago it was obvious that the bucs had to move on from dean and davis, the brittle brothers.
davis went first, dean is next. wouldnt be prudent to dump both at the same time but dumping those two is a multi year project that needed to happen. too much money for too few games played.

Tank The Best!!!. SMB💯💯💯
June 17th, 2025 at 9:18 am
Don’t Lie
June 17th, 2025 at 9:25 am
Why???
Granted, Kancey gets hurt each training camp. When he returns he never misses a game. And his play is excellent. Not even close to a disappointment. He’s one of the better players on the Bucs.
June 17th, 2025 at 9:28 am
AW3 the most disappointing by ALOT.
June 17th, 2025 at 9:37 am
I guess by the rule of the exercise you can’t pick the defensive coordinator so Dean gets to be the sacrificial lamb.
June 17th, 2025 at 9:46 am
31 had a bad season because of injuries. He’ll be back strong this year. Can’t believe someone picked 31.
June 17th, 2025 at 9:48 am
Thanks Joe for sticking up for Kancey. I was going to do it if you hadn’t. What a dumb take. Definitely one of the best defensive players!
June 17th, 2025 at 9:55 am
I agree with Joe. Look around the league. CB play is awful. Dean is a solid NFL starter—he just can’t stay healthy. Dumping him before we know if Morrison and Parrish are for real would be foolish.
Dean would start for most teams around the league.
June 17th, 2025 at 10:01 am
This is a good point. Who expected JTS to play lights out?
Joe was shook by how much Winfield fell off the cliff. Yeah, he was hurt. But dang, if he was that hurt, maybe he shouldn’t have been on the field.
June 17th, 2025 at 10:06 am
Compared to the calls for Jaire Alexander Dean is a Ironman. He’s set to make 13 mil this year? 15 maybe? Dean not so much disappointing as he is fragile. If nothing else he’s a good bridge till we see what we have in Morrison.
June 17th, 2025 at 10:21 am
Kinda humorous how some folks rag on Dean for his lack of INTs. Jamel had 5 INTs in his first 3 years. Zion McCollum has 2 INTs in his first 3 years. Carlton Davis had 5 INTs in his first 3 years, and Ronde Barber only had 4 INTs in his first 3 years.
Main issues with Dean are that (1) he’s only played in 25 of our 34 regular season games these past 2 years; (2) he’s only had 1 INT in the past 2 years; (3) his Passing Completion Rate Allowed over these past 2 years ballooned to 68.0%; and (4) he’s making $13 mil per year through 2026 for that level of performance.
Personally I think it’s all mostly attributable to injuries over these past 2 years. In his first 4 years Jamel was VERY GOOD. He missed 9 games in his first 4 years (a lot better than him missing 9 games in these past 2 years). He had 7 INTs in those 4 years (much better than 1 INT in the last 2 years). And his Passing Completion Rate Allowed over his first 4 years was an outstanding 54.2% (nearly 15% BETTER than his past 2 years).
I’m really hoping that he rebounds this year and gets back to the player that he was earlier in his career. We need all our guys to stay a LOT healthier this year if we expect to compete for the Super Bowl.
June 17th, 2025 at 10:27 am
Might as well put Kancey, Dennis, and Dean on IR to begin the season so we have some extra bodies going into the season then maybe they can make it down the stretch lol
June 17th, 2025 at 10:29 am
$13 Million doesn’t get you what it is use to.
Licht passes out bad contracts to his Secondary Draft picks like they are Halloween Candy
Over paid Dean, Winfield and Carlton Davis while not paying a proven pass rusher is roster mis management at it’s finest
June 17th, 2025 at 11:25 am
Bum Bum Bum!!!!!!!!!! Mickey mouse gloves he cant intercept anything unless it falls right in his lap and even then he drops it. Big contract for crappy production.
June 17th, 2025 at 11:28 am
Voss missed 15 games because of his shoulder injury from college. 1 game with the Flu. 1 game with a soft tissue injury. Dennis will be a great player for the Bucs going forward.
Dean is a really good CB when he’s healthy.
2024 most disappointing was #3 Jordan Whitehead. He had a really bad year. Reporters should inquire why.

Disappointed to see this article by Joe’s iggles scribe bretheran..

MOST DISAPPOINTING OF 2024 … REAL FANS KNOW WHO IT IS
2024 Most Disapointing
Not JTS. He never produced and no one thought he would show in 2024.
Honorable Mention: Yaya Diabi. All the preseason hype about his massive breakout season. Self-proclaiming his emergence as the next double-digit sack Buc. He had 1.5 sacks through 8 games! Finished with 4.5. He was more JTS-like than anyone wants to admit.
Runner Up: AWJ. Losing the best player the defense was crushing. He’s their swagger. He single-handedly won 2-3 games with his heroics in 2023. The Bucs would have won against Washington (and more) with a healthy AWJ. Tough to hate on a guy that’s injured (see Godwin).
Biggest Disappointment of 2024: Camarda. He could win the biggest “WTF Award” in Bucs history. The dude was the best punter in the NFL. He was a monster. He was weapon. He won the Bucs multiple games in 2023 by flipping the field and pinning the opponent deap. How do you lose your leg in one offseason at 25 yo?
June 17th, 2025 at 2:05 pm
Dean gave up zero TDs last year. His stats were solid in spite of failing the eyeball test in some circumstances. We’d have plenty of interested teams if we wanted to get rid of him BUT that would be pretty dumb imo – we need(ed) depth at corner – not just to replace objectively solid players.
