Dear NFL: Learn About Josh Grizzard

June 24th, 2025

Soon to be popular?

Bucs fans are stoked for this season. There are high expectations.

A strong nucleus left over from the 2020 Super Bowl-winning season, a Pro Bowl quarterback, all 11 starters returning from a top-three offense, the NFC South champion of the past four years, what’s not to like?

There is one question mark on offense, the guy pulling the strings.

Rookie offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard has an enviable task: taking over this great offense that added one of the best skill position players in the draft.

If the Bucs make any kind of postseason run and the offense stays superior, or even improves, Ben Solak of BSPN types that Grizzard’s name will be very popular among NFL owners looking for a new head coach.

… Grizzard has had a quick rise in the NFL coaching ranks; he was first an offensive quality control coach with the Dolphins in 2017 and had only two years as a wide receivers coach in Miami before he got the job with the Bucs last season. At just 34 years old, and with experience under Mike McDaniel and Coen, it’s fair to have “next big thing” suspicions around Grizzard. If he can keep the train chugging from last season, the Bucs should have a top-10 offense again.

Yeah, Joe knows some are skeptical of Grizzard being a head coach candidate come January. Joe doesn’t understand why.

Dave Canales was a first-year coordinator and he got the Stinking Panthers gig. Joe will admit Canales got the job in Carolina as much for his corporate demeanor and always-sunny disposition as much as for his coaching prowess. His Bucs offense certainly didn’t break records.

Then there was Liam Coen, who was nothing less than tremendous in his one year with the Bucs, his first as an NFL playcaller. He, too, got a head coaching gig.

If Grizzard can improve the offense — which he stated is possible — and the Bucs make any kind of a postseason run, Joe could easily see Grizzard as a hot head coaching candidate.

NFL owners like offense. Offenses keep teams relevant. And relevancy is what drives revenue. That gets owners’ attention.

Don’t put the cart before the horse. While I’m very hopeful, let’s see what he does in actual games before you make him the new head coach for the NY Giants or some other team.

Staying positive on Grizz. I really think he was the hidden gem under Coen. Hopefully, he is around for at least a couple of seasons before being vetted for an NFL coaching position.

  3. August 1976 Buc Says:

For me, just want to see 30 point average, it covers a lot of defensive warts. The 2020 Brady Bucs had 30.8 a game. If the offense puts up a 30 avg, with a competent defense, this team has a legit shot at another Lombardi.

  4. Bucnjim Says:

Well, Grizzard’s future not only depends on his offensive success it also has to do with the previous offensive coordinators. If Canales and Coen don’t improve their new teams then owners won’t be so quick to jump on the Bucs coaching staff. They’ll look at it as Baker & company rather than the Offensive coordinator.

  5. Scotty Mack Says:

Here’s hoping that both Canales and Coen fail this year. That way, owners might have second thoughts about hiring Grizzard even if the Bucs reach new heights.

  6. Dreambig Says:

Wow, that is a very healthy dose of optimism. He doesn’t even have a single game under his belt. Hopefully he is great and we get to keep him for a few years, but we won’t know until he actually gets to perform in a game situation, makes tough decisions, manages the clock, makes adjustments, …etc

  7. David Says:

NFL really needs to install some sort of rule with coordinators. Force them to have two year contracts or something.
The one and done garbage is annoying and detrimental to teams.

  8. Marky mark Says:

Griz is the, assistant OC. Real OC is Baker who will make,Griz rich.

  9. Kidfloflo Says:

They should of put verbiage in his contract that states he can’t leave after one year! Now I’m hoping he continues on last years great strides, and Baker doesn’t need to relearn yet ANOTHER new offense if this cat leaves for the third year in a row!
