Baker Mayfield Will Have More Say In Offense

June 5th, 2025

A veteran quarterback coming off back-to-back stud seasons should have a lot of say in the offense.

That’s the dynamic in the current offense at One Buc Palace. Baker Mayfield is “the man,” and more of the man that he was last season, per his comments to Prickly Pete Prisco of CBS on Tuesday.

Prisco shared those this morning in a Mayfield feature for CBSSports.com.

Mayfield said he relishes returning to the same offensive system, this time being led by rookie playcaller Josh Grizzard.

“…We have everybody back and added some pieces in the skill group. That makes it easier. I took a lot more responsibility last year, and I am taking even more ownership of it,” Mayfield said. “When it comes to those checks at the line of scrimmage, it makes it a lot easier with the guys being back. They know when we get this blitz, and I am going to check to this play, it’s second nature for them. When people don’t have to think about it, it’s a lot better.”

Joe trusts Mayfield with greater command over the offense, though that’s not always a great thing to have a QB as a highly dominant figure in what happens on Sundays. See the 2022 Buccaneers averaging 18 points per game.

Imagine if Baker has this “power” after two solid seasons how much power Brady had over Leftwich coming off a 7th SB? But it was ALL BL’s fault right?

Not trying to defend BL just searching for a little balance. Contradictions bother me.

So IF Bowles is as bad of a coach as people here select you have to also conclude that BA wasn’t too bright for bringing him here and supporting him for HC and that Jason lacks talent for supporting him.

If Brady was the greatest…and he was he also could have done something about that horrible last season.

Nobody is perfect and we all make mistakes. Two things can be true simultaneously. Brady is the GOAT, he deserves credit for his role in the Bucs last Lombardi…but then he also deserves “credit” or responsiblity for the sorry final season. It can be true that Brady really made horrible decisions in game plans and play calling and that BL also sucked. It’s not an either or but somehow only ONE, the least powerful, gets all the blame. Just sayin’.

    2022 was a weird year.

  3. Addb Says:

Brady was clearly distracted by his family issues and coming to terms with his impending retirement

Nice straight forward piece by Prisco and Mayfield.

  5. Bee Says:

No excuses this season. He’s the leader and can call his own shots. I’m expecting him to lead this offense and help this team get to the NFC Championship Game at minimum. Go Bucs.

  6. Aqualung Says:

The 2022 offense……….aaaarrrrrrgggghhhhh. We really felt BA’s absence.

I miss the days of the full time head coach.

    2022 was a weird year.

My God, the Bucs were unwatchable that year. No running game, no pass blocking, Brady having to checkdown 85% of the time before Evans, Godwin, or Julio Jones(!) could even get open.

I don’t blame Brady at all, but his lack of mobility just didn’t work with the 2022 offense. When Baker came the next year, the OL was only a little better, the running game was still atrocious, but his mobility helped the offense immensely.

    2022 = TB divorce = suck

  9. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Leftwich was always terrible.

Not having BA to cover his azz, and Brady disconnected and not running it for him just let it show through.

  10. Redzone Says:

If you go back to the comments Brady made right after he lost his center you could see the devastation in his comments and his face. He was pissed and completely over it – like he knew the season was over before it started

And he played that way – not trusting Haines and phoning it in to avoid injury at all costs

I wonder what Brady’s thoughts are on Logan Hall LOL

  11. Oneilbuc Says:

Jeffrey. Stop with the excuses even for Brady because Devin White lost his dad the same year and his play fell off but no one gave him that excuse. So stop giving Brady excuses.

  12. GoneGator Says:

Love it! Baker should know the offense nearly as well as Grizz.

Hoping Grizz continues to coach Baker and the boys the why as well as the what – Baker raved about that from duuuval last year

  13. GoneGator Says:

More explosive plays with Grizz 🤘🏼

  14. View from 132 Says:

Why is he wearing a hair piece?

  15. BuccaDAWG Says:

Alot of the 22 zBucs problem was too many 2nd string type talented players starting, remember to O-line plus more than our sgare of big time I juries, the talent this TEAM has is definitely 1st string NFL. Plus I like all the overlooking & disrespect the Bucs are getting, we’re that chip well Bucs!!

I agree! I have always said that the horrible offense was Brady’s fault. That’s why BA came through like a tornado with his Red Pen and wiped all of that garbage out. That’s why, I think, Brady refused to come back unless BA was gone. The results are history. So horrible that poor BL can’t even get a job at a high school.

  17. Davyboy Says:

Once Cohen gave Baker more authority to read the defense at the line of scrimmage and change the play to what he thought was best 2 things happened:1-the offense jumped up in rankings to 3rd, even without his best receivers and 2-Bakers stats skyrocketed to top 3 in several categories like touchdowns, passer rating and completion percentage. Now that this is Bakers 3rd year and he is the leader of the team, both the team ranking and Bakers stats will continue to increase. If Grizz can just maintain what Cohen started and the defense can play good enough to be ranked in the top 10, we will have won 14 games going into the playoffs. If we play Washington, we will run over them like a little speed bump on our way to the superbowl. Mark it down because it is going to happen. It is going to be one of the best teams we have ever had. In short, this will be the year Baker silences his most strident critics, for good.

  18. Brandon Says:

Careful, Joe. Don’t dare blame the great Brady dor any of the offensive woes of 2022 even though he openly admitted to being extremely involved in game planning and was the one that checked to all the ineffective smoke screens, audibled into bad plays, and checked down prematurely. Remember, Leftwich has to.take 100% of the blame or the Brady Fans heads will explode at the sacrilege.

  19. Bartow Buc Says:

Hopefully having Baker more in control of the offense helps eliminate the bad play calls in the red zone, and help the Bucs improve clock management in critical situations.

    Go Bucs 2025 !!

  20. JimBobBuc Says:

Early last year the playcalls from Coen went in late, so Bake didn’t have much time at the LOS to change plays. This is something that Grizz will need to work on – getting the plays in quickly.

  21. Kenton Smith Says:

I don’t think it’s about Baker having more control over the offense. In his mind he has control over the offense. He takes the OCs scheme (whoever the OC might be) and then takes responsibility for it. If it doesn’t work out he never blames the OC because he has taken accountability for the offense and that is just what the great ones do. Yep, get used to it. He’s a great one.
