“You’ll Play A Long Time In This League If You Don’t Make The Same Mistake Twice”

A fleeting spotlight was placed on what Bucs fans can’t wait to see.

That comes in the form of rookie playcaller Josh Grizzard, the Bucs’ 34-year-old offensive coordinator. He was promoted in the offseason to fill the big, successful shoes of Liam “El Serpiente” Coen.

Grizzard has shaved his flowing locks and he put his boss face on during Buccaneers rookie minicamp recently. The in-house team cameras captured a glimpse and turned it into a YouTube short.

“You’ll play a long time in this league if you don’t make the same mistake twice,” Grizzard lectured to the rookies.

He sounded convincing.

“You made a mistake today? It is what it is. Just don’t make the same mistake tomorrow,” Grizzard continued. “We are adding a new install, so that we can go attack the defense. We’re not just going to run the same sh*t for three days in a row. Alright. Stay in your books. Overcommunicate, especially for the skill [position players] and quarterbacks. If you can help out the guy beside you, it’s really going to help the whole operation.”

Joe’s not sure what “Grizz” will deliver. But Joe does keep hearing that Grizzard is an extremely dedicated and confident workaholic type who fully grasps the incredible opportunity on his plate.

That same advice could be given to coaches.

I’ve never heard Todd Bowles quoted as having said that, though.

Grizz is going to be an upgrade over Coen…. I have no doubt.

He may need a few games to get acclimated but he’ll be great. He was already running the best parts of our offense – passing game and 3rd downs, right?

I envision a blend of last year’s offense with Miami’s of a few years ago when their offense was killing it. That’s just a guess based on his influences and previous jobs but I like the sound of it.

He’s the in house head coach in waiting. Grizz to the moon baby!

  4. stpetebucsfan Says:

Agree Weebs! Smart, young, and dynamic. His trajectory is certainly upwards.

Deemed a HC in waiting before ever coaching his first snap as an OC is a bit rich. Leadership matters. Influence matters. Clear communication matters. Respect matters. Servency matters. Plenty examples exist of great OC’s or DC’s who couldn’t spell success at the HC level. Adam Gase, Robert Salah, Dirk Koetter, Arthur Smith, Lovie Smith to name a few of the top of my head. NFL HC is a hard gig.

The strongest HC’s always seem to have a great staff around them to which they are directly responsible for selecting and developing. Not only are they on the hook for developing players, but largely are responsible for developing their assistant coaches as well. It’s a lot deeper than X’s and O’ s folks. Which is why a large majority of assistant coaches fail as HC’s.

Einstein didn’t make the atomic bomb…However, he d*mn sure did master the X’s and O’s that were used to birth it. Case in point, everyone has their strengths, purpose, and place.

  6. Manny Says:

Dig Coen’s nickname. Grizz better hit the ground running in ATL, we need that division game. They should overload the ask from Grizz in the preseason games, and any joint practices we may have.

  7. Davyboy Says:

Taking charge, cut the mistakes, stay healthy, we go all the way.

  8. BillyBucco Says:

Grizz knows the opportunity he has.
Ferrari of an offense and a bright mind.
Hopefully we go for it more on 4th down.
Misdirection should be the name of the game.

  9. garro Says:

This a very talented team. The margin for error is very thin for a rookie or FA trying to make the roster or practice squad. One mistake can be the difference. Knowing your assignment is key. Line up in the wrong spot? Ouch! Instead of going out and checking out Tampa’s night life stay home and get the playbook down. Do the extra stuff after practice if you can. Coaches notice. Ask questions if you do not get some of the finer points. Again coaches notice. Effort should be a no brainer.

    Go Bucs!

All Einstein did was warn the president that Germany was likely working towards a bomb and that such a thing would actually work.

  11. Fred McNeil Says:

How the heck did he figure out the speed of light squared part, though? That’s a big mother loving number.

  12. NLK@boston Says:

that’s how the govt. projects their budget. pensions squared x lunch breaks x the waste, fraud, and abuse x # of people who actually work (x1) and that.s how you get big numbers. and all done on chalk boards to erase the evidence. Bowles last chance. that’s what the numbers say.

  13. Beeej Says:

Well he called all the 3rd downs, and THEY went pretty well last year.

  14. NLK@boston Says:

agree with aqualung regarding coaches or in this case head coach. the oc’s have done there’s. it’s time bowles did his. the defense better improve or it’s 3 strikes and you’re out.

  15. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

That same message could be used for Life.

You can go a long way in Life if you don’t make the same mistake twice.

  16. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

    Grizz knows his shizz.

I think our offense will be better than last year.

Einstein didn’t, Ole Romer did in the 1600s.
