Todd Bowles Talks Schedule

May 22nd, 2025

Todd Bowles

The Buccaneers’ head coach is all smiles.

Hey, it’s May and Tampa Bay has a strong roster. There’s also plenty of work to be done to be ready for the 2025 season, says Todd Bowles. He made a visit to Rooted in Progress on WFLA-TV for an interview that hit on many aspects’ of Bowles’ life.

There also was a little football chatter.

The NFL schedule came out a week ago and Bowles feels great about it. He explained that he wants a true midseason bye. And that’s what he got, as well as a Week 15 Thursday night game.

“If it’s early, you know, you don’t have anything for the stretch run,” Bowles said. “So if people get hurt, you don’t get that break. And if it’s too late, you kind of want it in the middle — Week 7, 8 or 9. And the Thursday game, you get it 10 days after that, so that’s a mini-bye. So you always look at that first — because if you get it Week 3, the rest of the year, you’re humping it. So I always look at those kind of things. …”

“You look for how many long distance trips you got, how many long back-to-backs do you have, and when’s your Thursday night game so when’s your short week.”

Bowles also said he’s down on cold weather games, but that’s a Bowles thing. “I’m not a big cold weather person,” he said.

Joe loves the schedule, as Joe has said many times. Bowles is 3-0 on opening days as Bucs head coach, so opening with a critical road game feels like a bonus. As for the bye week, there are potential positives and negatives to any particular week.

  1. Smarter than Joe Says:

Ceiling will always be 10 wins with a Coach with a losing mindset.

Dude consistently trusts his weakest unit in critical junctures of the game that combined with how badly he struggles to scheme up pass defense limits the Bucs potential.

He says he’s had a defensive epiphany, but what took him so long? Fans have been abused with awful pass defense for 2 consecutive seasons, why not fix it earlier?

  2. SlyPirate Says:

    What Bowles really said:
“The first thing I look at are Prime Time games. Second, I look at games against premier coaches. I mark those as losses.”

LMAO!!! You guys are jokes with zero pride!

  4. Stpetemattt Says:

    What’s with the trolls?

  5. jimmy Says:

Hopefully they can go 1-0 to start. I’m sure Todd would blow off losing to the falcons week one but they need to set the tone.

  6. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Stpetemattt first time here LOL? Some trolls get their mail sent here.

  7. Fred McNeil Says:

It seems like a pretty good schedule to me. I think part of the reason we get so many prime time games is because we play a first place schedule.

  8. Chris Nicholls Says:

I think week 1 is a critical start/win for the entire season.
Yes late in the year we can run off wins, but to start
    On the road
Conference opponent that owned us last year
    Is CRITICAL
I live in Tampa and bought my Bucs at Atlanta tix TODAY

Just hope the defense can stay healthy through the bye this year and we can get some decent play from the second string players. Also, hope that Bowles gets a lot better with defensive play calling and clock management. Since he has hired a clock management coach I would expect that this part of Bowles coaching gets better…

  10. Crickett Baker Says:

Bowles has made a few mistakes, but I think he is the “winiest” coach we have EVER had.

  11. Obvious One Says:

Personally I’m excited to see who the new head coach is going to be…

It IS the last year of his contract… And he’s given no evidence that he can take this team any further.

But… In all fairness…. He does have THIS last shot at doing something special this year. If he does say win games in a Dominant fashion (instead of) banking on “dumb luck” in the traditional “Homer Simpson” style of falling in backwards and the bad luck of other hopelessly sloppy teams….. And actually WIN WITH AUTHORITY….

Well then MAYBE, maybe they’ll give him another year.

In other words, WE BETTER BE SNIFFING A SUPER BOWL OR ELSE!

Because times up. He Has To Deliver. 5 years is a LONG TIME in what has been a weak division. This IS a business to the Glazers and RESULTS Are the Rule of Thumb.

He’s not a bad guy. He just doesn’t seem to be the guy who can deliver a Super Bowl..

  12. Obvious One Says:

I want to add to my 2 cents and state this “Clearly”

He just doesn’t seem to be the guy who can deliver a Super Bowl… “As the Head Coach”

He has “Other Skills” that are Very Valuable… And if we could keep him around in a “different position”….. And I don’t necessarily mean the DC. Though I feel that if his only focus was the DC he’d excel again. But I’m not suggesting that. Another position is what I have in mind.

As the HC however…. He had his shots and Mark my Words, this is likely his last to impress us ALL..

  13. WalkThePlank Says:

Bowles has 4-year contract with a team option for a 5th. There has been no word on whether the team has exercised that option. –Joe

“Bowles has 4-year contract with a team option for a 5th. There has been no word on whether the team has exercised that option. –Joe”

How do you know this is true?

Can you point to an article outside of this site that shows that detail?

All I have ever read is that it is a five year deal with no mention of an option.

  15. Cobraboy Says:

I just bought tickets for the Bucs in NO late October.

  16. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

The schedule is the schedule. Looking for evil, or favors, in it is a fool’s errand. Here at Los Bucaneros Fanatico de Jose, we take it one game at a time.

  17. Timboslice85 Says:

Y’all didn’t read the other one on schedule. This team is gonna have a 13 win season. Both eagles and lions have more than double opponents they play that made the playoffs last year and in really big stretches. Don’t be surprised if we get the number one seed in the nfc this year. Our schedule really is a dream scenario for having a division winner schedule. Only back to back game against nfl caliber playoff teams from last year. We the start the year playing in domes or good weather. Perfect bye week, perfect Thursday night game. Bowles no longer makes in game decisions for clock management. Us being a 9 seed this year is still and understatement. Stop hating y’all. It’s gonna be a good f*ckin year

  18. Billy Bucco Says:

What’s with the negative Bowles stuff?
It’s not multiple guys, just 1 loser who can’t wait to get off the bus from school.

What do you guys think about Andy Reid?
    Can he win a SB?
What do you think Philly fans said about him after 14 seasons?

Every single coach has ability. Ours has played the game and relates to players well and is really freaking smart with formations and scheme etc.

Every single coach is dealt a hand. Ours was dealt a reject of an Offensive Coordinator but abundant talent. He also had to lose Brady and brought in a Franchise QB, which has never been done in Tampa.

Sorry, that injuries on defense ruined your plans as a human being, but Bowles is not to blame.

He is actually the guy who is fixing it.
That’s the team, not you, as you are clearly beyond help!

  19. WalkThePlank Says:

    Billy Bucco Says:

“really freaking smart with formations and scheme etc.”

In what world is this the truth?

    Perhaps in never never land.

    Fire Bowles now!

  20. ballwasher61 Says:

Better to be quiet and let the world think you’re an idiot then to open your mouth and prove them correct…. Mark Twain…. Shania’s grandaddy

  21. Kenton Smith Says:

Jack Burton Mercer, that’s exactly what I was gonna say. Aw, Shoot!

  22. DungyDance Says:

Spot on Billy Bucco. One obvious weakness of his was game clock management (I was especially harsh on him on several occasions).
But Bowles apparently addressed that now with new personnel.

P.S., what’s with all the negativity from some people here? G.d., go outside for a walk or something.

  23. #99 the Big Fella Says:

Bunch of miserable old get off my lawn guys in here. I never have seen so much negativity in one place.

  24. Double Nickel Says:

Last time we fired a coach who consistently got us to the playoffs, we entered into the lost decade. I don’t want to go through that again.

  25. WalkThePlank Says:

    55 has a point.

But in this case we have a Dungy type coach that no longer can Dungy.

So in this case we get the worst of both worlds.

If one and done in the playoffs is your SB, then skies the limit.

Bowles ceiling is the NFC South title.

  26. Player 1 Says:

WtP, he does have some Dungy qualities. First, Dungy was way too loyal to his staff and wouldnt cut ties when he should have. Second Dungy never had an offense like this in Tampa. If we can just cover the middle of the defensive back field and get a few more sacks and INTs, we should make it deep into playoffs, and beyond.

  27. jimmy Says:

we all saw what we saw last year. it isn’t negativity, it’s reality. bowles is not going to innovate the bucs to a super bowl
