Tez Johnson’s Impressions Of Baker Mayfield, Bucs

May 12th, 2025

New Bucs receiver reacts.

Bucs rookie wide receiver Tez Johnson is stoked the Bucs drafted him. And part of that passion is that he’s matched with a quarterback who has just as much passion for the game as he does.

Soon, both Johnson and Mayfield will be on the same practice fields behind One Buc Palace. And Johnson believes he’s a good match for Mayfield, just by watching Mayfield on TV.

“That fire, that passion he plays with,” Johnson said. “You can just tell the Buccaneers, everyone on the team plays with that fire.

“Even Mike Evans, to this day, he plays with a chip on his shoulder. Eleven consecutive seasons with 1,000 yards, you don’t get that too often.

“Baker Mayfield carrying [Nick] Bosa on his shoulder, throws the ball still. That’s the fire.”

And Johnson said he can tell Mayfield’s personality has rubbed off teammates.

“There are so many guys on this team that play with that chip. I think quarterbacks just love that.”

So when did Johnson realize that Mayfield is his kind of quarterback?

“I see him taking smelling salts before the game,” Johnson said. “Yeah, he’s wired.”

Joe noticed in the comments about Johnson why Johnson is getting so much run. Well, the guy plays with passion, and was electric on the field for Oregon. Additionally, Johnson dreamed of playing for the Bucs.

Rather than ask why Bucs fans are excited about Johnson, Joe asks, why shouldn’t Bucs fans get stoked about a guy with his skillset, his heart and his desire to help the Bucs win?

So glad Tez’s dream came true. Another eager rookie that cannot wait to be part of the Bucs. Win-Win-Win for all.

  2. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Man, Tez is exciting! Hope it works out with his size.

  3. BucU Says:

I believe this kid is special. He’s got the intangibles that don’t show up in a combine. He makes you believe in him.

  4. Lou. Says:

Because he’s the smallest person ever to play in the NFL? As Joe says, there’s no interest in future bartenders. Or freak shows.

    Prove us wrong.

  5. BillyBucco Says:

Where does all that confidence come from?
    He is making me believe.

tez’s natural position is not WR it’s CB

Im stoked! We got the duck dynasty duo or double Ds, or the quack attack, or the Mighty Duck duo, or the big 10 bouncers, or the electric beavers or those trail blazing Bucs, or those tez and Bucky terrorizers, or the Ducky brothers…score again…. that song but instead of black we put green… uh huh tou know what it is 🎶 green and yellow, green and yellow, green and yellow 🎶 Bucky and his blazing brother..Or 7 and 83 as fast as fast can be!!! The oregon O.Gs….the blazing birds..or the dynamic duck production

  8. Colonel Angus Says:

    Pulling for the kid.

  9. stpetebucsfan Says:

He “could” be this year’s version of Bucky! Not talking about matching the production or importance to the offense, but being a critical contributor whose diminutive size and exuberance will not only win him fans he’ll get a ton of run in the National media.

Everybody loves to see little guys stick it to big guys with their skill set.

  10. stpetebucsfan Says:

BTW I’m with Joe when it comes to questioning why anybody would have ANYTHING detrimental about Joe’s choice to “cover” Tez.

This is supposed to be ENTERTAINMENT. Dissecting x’s and o’s, which plays to call etc can grow weary at times. I could watch a good game of Madden for that.

It’s the HUMAN BEINGS playing the game that make it truly interesting.

  11. garro Says:

Be honest Joe. It’s also gonna be lovely for you guys to get interviews with a guy who will give you some good quotes? As he just did?

    Gotta love this kid.

    Go Bucs!

  12. SB~LV Says:

Why can’t he gain weight ?

Great personality and passion for the game. Everything but his size fits this team. You’ve got to root for a guy that runs like a squirrel.

I love this draft class. Smart, passionate, articulate dudes.

I do think we need a little bit of Nasty. Where is our enforcer? Add a Ndamukong Suh/Warren Sapp type and this could be a championship team.

    Won’t hurt. 🙂

  17. KABucs Says:

I noticed on some highlights, that when Tez is about to get plowed by safety or LB, he’ll frequently slide or go out of bounds. If he’s passed the first down marker, I don’t care what he does to avoid a hit, self preservation is important. It’s smart play IMO. If this guy gets open and gets us first downs, and does it with some pizzazz, that’s all you can ask for. I don’t expect a guy at 155 lb to try and purposely break a tackle to get an extra yard. Totally pointless at his stature. That’s Bucky M.O.
He’ll just end up on IR. He’s used to being the small guy knows what it takes to stay on a football field.

  19. Teacherman Says:

He could easily put on 15 pounds in 2 seasons.

If he gets up to 170, he’ll be fine long term.

Man, I was 154 pounds once. Sigh. – Every Reader of JoeBucsFan

If you look around the league, you’ll notice that there aren’t any players really like that anymore. This is a different generation of kids coming into the league. This isn’t the 80s, 90s, babies. They have their own personalities.

  22. adam from ny Says:

when and how did our drafting get so good, that a 7th rounder is getting this much attention…

if he gets cut, payton and the broncos will surely pick him up and give him a shot…

and sleep in his quarterback’s spare room rent free

  23. Aqualung Says:

Too much yapping. He also said he runs away from guys. Just like App State Dexter Jackson, Darden, and Trey Palmer. Dude is great sound bites. Let’s see how much talking his field toughness and production in pads do before we anoint him rookie of the year.

  24. BucsfaninOregon Says:

Hey Ibor drunk, “electric beaver” is absolutely the last nick name for Tez. Out here in Oregon, on the left coast, you are either a Quacker Backer or a Beaver Believer. 40 miles north of Eugene (Ducks) is Corvallis (Oregon State Beavers). Oregon’s Civil War each year.

  25. ballwasher61 Says:

Electric Beaver. LOL Save the pickles

  26. J Says:

The interaction between Tez and Bucky is going to be free press for years to come for the pen and mic club.

  27. toopanca Says:

A seventh round pick who has a legitimate chance to increase the Bucs average points per game by a point or so is pretty exciting statistically speaking.

And, if you have ever watched Mark Rober’s YouTube channel, squirrels can be way more interesting to watch than clumsy puppies and cute kittens.

  28. Freddy PA Moxie Says:

Says he tries to run like a squirrel. I like that. We need more squirrels out there. Good luck, defenders!

  29. GoneGator Says:

    Devonte Smith = 6′ 160lbs

Tez’s weight will have nothing to do whether he makes the team or not.
You can’t teach speed/quickness and he has both.
If he can catch the fastball consistently Grizz will have another very dangerous weapon to play with.

    More will be revealed 🤞🏼

  30. Christina Olive Says:

You can”t please a Bucs fan Joe lol it’s incredibly sad. I love hearing about the newbies though, they deserve our support.

  31. Gotti-Dog-05-20-84 Says:

Comparisons can be made to Gerald McNeil….he was listed at 5’7″ 145 lbs. He had 5 pretty decent years as a return specialist with an occasional offensive play thrown in. The biggest difference between them (on paper) was speed. McNeil ran a 4.19 40 vs. Johnson’s 4.5. There’s a lot to be said for not having to worry about who your return man is going to be for 5 years if he works out.

I am rooting for Tez. Hoping he can avoid the Mac’s running for him. Slide or run out of bounds to live for another play. Go Tez Go. Go Bucs.

  33. Aqualung Says:

Run out of bounds?! What Darden and D Jackson did. What Trey Palmer does now.

This is a cute post draft story. This kid will be lucky to have Darden’s career.

Post NFL in two years or two months, he’ll be a fun personality to listen to on podcasts. Maybe he makes the flag football team for the Olympics. It’s amazing how people are fawning over this kid like he’s Devin Hester.

  34. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

Tez Johnson, I want you to know this. Go to GNC and get some weight gain mix and eat really good, in a few months you will gain weight. I was nervous when Bucky came here and he’s 30 pounds heavier. we play some nasty games with New Orleans and I might not have doubted someone putting a cheap shot on him. Let’s Go Bucs!!!!
